and the other thing is the Nats are not as bad as their record.  I mean the bullpen has been a disaster this year, and we certainly are missing 2 legit quality starters (Stras being one)
I mean they have lost way too many games, but some of those games were close.  We were like one out or one hit away from a win or loss and we ended up on the wrong side of nearly all of them.
Team batting average is like 10th in the league  (actually 5th...I just looked it up) which is actually pretty damn good.  They were just inconsistent and could not hit on days they needed it or deliver pitching on days they needed.

Total run differential is -16  which is not good, but Miami is -27 and they are in 2nd place in the division.
Actually all the current NL teams in hunt for the WC have negative run differential and roughly .500 record.

Nats lost 12 games this year by 2 runs or less. That's couple timely hits or better yet, one better inning by bullpen away from several more wins.

IFs and BUTTS...

   Well... Nats win 1st game of double header behind strong pitching from....Voth.  THat's right.  I said Voth.  Formerly 0-5 with 8+ ERA.  Threw a complete game (well for college) allowing 3 hits and 1 run in 7 innings.  7 strikeouts too.  Pretty fine performance from him.

Philthy is mucking around and trying not to make the playoffs.  Technically they are tied with four teams for the spots, but they have only 5 games left where most others have 7.

Geez...sure hope the Nats help knock them out  :snicker:

Nats starting some dude....Paolo Espino in game 2.  Never heard of him.

Good luck.  The Nats have legitimately won 3 games in a row for the first time this season.

Let's see if they can make it four.

Go N...oh forget it.

Nats win 4 in a row!!!  SO too bad it's a 60 game season...apparently the Nats only start playing about 50 games in...just like last year.
(The Fat lady was heard cursing in her hotel room...."Damn! I have to spend another night in this city?")
Nats win 2nd half of double header in "extra" innings (ahem...the 8th inning) with a walk off HR from a 32 year old rookie.   That's Nats baseball folks.

Milwaukee, SanFran and Cincinnati are LOVING the Nats right now cause we just swept the Phillies in 3 games and knocked Philthy from .5 game up to a full game back in the race for the wild card spot.  Philthy only has 4 games left to play.  This three game series loss probably did them in.

Turner with another double (.340 average)
Stephenson 2 hits, 1 a triple  (.320 average)
Soto:  3 run Homerun (.345 average)
Suzuki with a hit (.267)
Hernandez 2 hits (.250)
Taylor 1 hit (.210)

Pitching....well....you can't have everything.  Starter went 4 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits.  Relief pitching pretty well sucked as usual. McGowin 2 runs on 1 hit in only 2/3 of an inning. Suero 1 run on 1 hit and 3 walks in 1/3 of inning.  Finnegan 0 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 inning (good boy) and....
OUr winning pitcher - Hudson has a horseshoe up his ass, because he got the win even though this closer did exactly what he should not...come in last inning with a 1 run lead and gave up that lead to tie the game.  Lucky for him Yadiel Hernandez hits a walk off HR in bottom of the inning.
Okay...so I went back and looked at this and can't really fault Hudson.  The run was scored on a throwing error (Holt) on a routine sac bunt ground ball to 3rd and Holt sailed the throw 6' over the 1st basemen and runner (on second) scored easily....so the run was unearned.  And with the COVID college rules baseball the "extra" 8th inning was started with a given runner on second base.

Hudson did earn his previous win the same way...giving up the lead in the top of inning only to half Nats hitter save his bacon and give him a win he did not really earn.

Anyway...4 wins in a row

Go Nats.  It was fun for three days.

By the way....the Nats are 4.5 games back from wildcard spot with 5 games remaining.

If anny of the six teams chasing WC spots currently ahead of the Nats wins a single game OR if the Nats lose a game....it's over  :'(

(Well technically one win by one club would make it possible for Nats to tie for WC spot if that team lost all other games and Nats won ALL remaining games)

But she's warming up

Well the Nats happy banana train has gone off the rails.

Nats lose 12-3 in the finale of the four game series with Philthy.

On a positive note, Eric Fedde - Nats starter...pitched 7 complete innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, 1 BB and 5 K's.  Pretty decent outing for him.

Too bad it wasn't one of them Covid College type games which ended in 7, cause then we brought in the Bullpen and they allowed 9 runs (yes that is a 9) in only 1 and 2/3 innigs.
McGowen allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks (including 1 HR) in 1.0 innings of pitching (oo-fah)
and then it got worse...
followed by Harper (Ryan)....but honestly Bryce probably could have done better... who allowed 6 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks (2 HR) in 2/3 of one inning.  HE was so bad they brought in position player Holt to finish the 9th inning for the final out.

Really?  6 runs in one inning?  from your bullpen?  (I think I have identified one of the Nats problems)  :)

Oh, and if my math is right...The Nats are officially eliminated.  5.0 games back of wildcard with 4 games to play.
There's a fat lady singing somewheres in DC tonight.

With the win, Philthy is now .5 game back of a WC, as is Milwaukee and San Francisco.
Philthy has only 3 games remaining, Milwaukee has 5, SanFran has 6
Cincinnati has 3 games left, but are +.5 so they currently hold WC spot #1.

Really don't know what I'm going to do for rants next week  :-\

So the Nats loss last night came with few positives....

Juan Soto had two hits including a HR.  He is currently batting .352  His career MLB average is .295 (1101 at bats). That's pretty damn outstanding.

Nats as a whole had 6 hits last night.  Soto had 2, Gomes had 2.  Stephensen (batting lead off) had 1 hit.  Harrison in the #2 spot had 1 hit. (Turner had the night off)

So batters #4 - 9 had zero hits with exception of Gomes 2 hits (batting 6th)
The other hitters #4-9 were a combined 0 for 14.

Soto's 2 run HR came in bottom of the ninth when it was already 12-1.

Not that it really mattered as the Nats bullpen threw the game away.

Nats have four games remaining all vs the Mets over the next four days.

News Flash.  The Nats are back.  For ANOTHER loss

Corbin starting pitcher allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.  Which is pretty good against the best hitting team in MLB (yes the Mets have the highest team average)

Too Bad Corbin is pitching for the Nats though, cause they only gave him 1 run for support.

Corbin is 2-7 this season.  0-6 in his last 7 starts and I don't believe any of those were truly bad from a pitching standpoint.  He just doesn't seem to get any run support when its his turn in the rotation.

Wild Card race is really tight if anyone cares.  About 4-5 games left for most clubs and it's likely going to take all of them to figure who gets in.
