glad to hear he’s recovered...

I guess I’ve been a fan of number 8 for a lot longer than most. I was
at game 2130, because I couldn’t afford tickets to 2131. His final
season was pretty much a home run tour of American League

Cal is such an awesome dude.  Great for the game, team, town, etc.  Too bad Baltimore is such a shit city.
I actually met Cal in person about 5-6 years ago in Pigeon Forge, TN, where he opened a new Ripken tournament baseball complex.  My son was on a travel team and we spent a week there.  AWESOME place.  Cal is huge in person (well he swelled a little after his playing days, but still...so much bigger than he looked on TV.)  By far my son's favorite vacation ever.  Week long tournament with his team and hanging out in a hotel and doing stuff at night.  It was good times.  Memories made.  Not enough of that in my life...work, work, work  :'(

Anyway, Cal is a character guy and someone to admire.  Need some more of his ilk in the game today.

it didn't take a genius to see the Nats were gonna be hurt by letting Rendon walk, and with Zimm sitting the season out that's a big hole on offense

letting 34 walk was an improvement

Waaaaay back in his early days is the last time I followed baseball. Ripken, Murray, etc.. Definitely a class act for professional sport! Glad he's ok.

2-3 years ago I started sayin the Strawberry needs to be moved to the bullpen as it's the only way he will get through the season uninjured. Then last season he went the entire season without  an injury, and my opinion didn't look so good.

Strawberry is now out for the season with wrist surgery for carpal tunnel

7 years of this at $245 million is going to be like what.....$3-5 mill a game he actually plays in?

Oofah.  I mean he was GREAT last year and he had the right to not renew and renegotiate, and who wouldn't, but yikes.  By the time this contract is up he will be 39.  I don't see him pitching at 36 much less 39.

I can easily see him pitching at that age, from the bullpen

Sadly, I don't think they right the ship this year.  The season is so short, they don't have time to make up for their typical slow start.  When is the all-star break this year anyway?  ;D

We know letting Rendon go would hurt dramatically and it is showing.  I don't think the Nats had a real shot at keeping him.  When they gave Strasburg that contract, we knew it was over for Rendon and I don't believe he preferred/intended to stay in Washington anyway.

SO....Strasburg made 35 million this year for what?  Five innings I think.  10.81 ERA, 5IP, 2SO.  Seven million an inning aint too bad.
I know they have an abbreviated salary for this season, but even still those are some pricey 5 innings  :uh-huh:

Now I'm not suggesting this IS or even SHOULD BE the case with Stras, but.... If a player has an injury, does the team eat the whole salary forever?  And suppose it's career-ending?  Can a guy be released and is the team still on the hook for the entire contract/salary?

The Nats are 4 games below .500 with a record of 11W 15L.  They have played pretty consistently sub .500 ball over last couple weeks against pretty good teams.  Problem is they play sub or  barely .500 ball against even average teams as well.  The Nats have not put a string of three wins together this season (well, if you count skipping three postponed games without play and string the end of one series across not playing for a week into the next series 6 days later, then you do get three wins in a row...which they quickly followed up the next night with a loss.

So let's look at the bright side, shall we?
We have the next 8 games consecutively for the next 8 days to close out August against subpar teams; Philly and Boston.  Philly actually has a very similar record to the Nats with both teams 4.0 games back, but the Nats have played two more games (a win and a loss) so technically with the winning percentage we are the better team - However if I were looking at this, the Phillies have the opportunity at least to win those two games in hand, so really WHO is has the worse record to claim the basement of the NL East?... but I digress... (as usual)
Boston is awful this year at 9-20.

Hopefully the Nats can pull together and manage to win a bunch of games.  They need to go 6-2 in the next 8 to finish August with a .500 record at 17-17.

GO Nats!

Juan Soto is batting .400 for the season so far.
26 hits in 65 AB, plus 10 walks
7 HR and 17 RBI
He's played in a total of 18 games this season

I understand pitching wins you games/championships, but I don't understand the contract given to Strawberry. Why do you spend that much money on an injury prone player? He's been in the league 10 years now, and had maybe two complete seasons that weren't interrupted by injuries

and honestly I'd be surprised if Zimm comes back as player next year, but he seems like he could be a successful manager

And the Nats sucked it again last night.  Got to find a way to NOT allow 8 runs a game.
I actually watched this game in it's entirety (which is very rare for me).  Should have given up in the 4th with they went down 4-1.  It never got better.
I would like my 3+ hours of life wasted back please.

Season is over.  Nats are now in the cellar of the division...last place.  The "season" is nearly 1/2 over with 27/60 games played already.  Nats are 11-16 in what is probably the weakest (lowest winning %) division in all of baseball.

Thought this week would be there turn around week.  Had great opportunity against two below average teams.

ALTA's favorite player in all of baseball (#34) has let his hair grow out.  It's almost to his shoulders.  Haven't paid much attention to him, but apparently he's been on a pretty good tear lately (according to the stats shown last night)

Something smells over there and I don't think it's coming from the Anacostia River.

Anyway....GO Nats...

er um....or maybe rather Go HOME Nats
...season is done.

And another let down by the Nats....

Corbin looked pretty good.  Had some high pitch counts early but really pitched well enough to win.
Only you don't usually win if you only score 2 runs... and you have a "miscue" in the outfield that puts a runner on to tie the game late
...and two outfielders collide to drop a pretty routine fly ball.

And you allow your former "superstar" who plays for the other team  (who shall remain nameless in respect to ALTA's love of the man) to RBI the winning run in.

Nats are 11-17
32 games left in the season

They need to play probably better than .600 TOTAL for the season to have any hopes of a playoff spot.
THey are currently at a .393 winning percentage.

They need to win 36 games (total) in the season to be at .600

that would require the Nats to win 25 of the remaining 32 games to end up at .600.
thats about a 78% winning percentage over the remaining 32 games...

Aint going to happen.
