Training camp started today, so, new season new thread. I dont make the rules.
:-|
Management has said Oshie and Backstrom will be on LTIR all season, which gives the team a little breathing room in cap space. According to the crappy cap sites still available for free, the Caps are $10.27M over the cap. Backy and Oshie being on LTIR will save $14.95M. Which should give the Caps $4.68M of cap space. That will be nice when the inevitable injury happens.
Ovechkin apparently has a minor injury, but is skating with the team. Rasmus Sandin is still in Sweden.. visa issues.
-
So....who is left that was on Stanley Cup winning team?I can only think of Ovi, Willy, Carlson. Is that it?
Technically .. Oshie and Backstrom as well

Bristol Baby!!! :raspberry:

I missed the first hour, the rest was rather boring. It reminded me of when they had the wrong tire at Darlington and could go 100 laps on a set.

Too late. I went and gone and done it already. :raspberry: ;D

Not for nothin', but the Redskins have now gone 2 full games, scoring on every "competitive" possession.. Defense still sucks, so it was close, but they just smoked the Bengals on MNF, on the road, 38-33  :hearts:
It appears as if Jayden Daniels is him.. Just had the best rookie passing % night in NFL history. 2 TD's, 1 rushing TD, like 93% completions, no turnovers.. Leads the league in QB rushing TD's. 8-0

....Until he gets hit
but give him credit, he looked good last night from the little bit I saw
-
He's been getting hit every game. For a tall skinny kid he seems to absorb it well, so far. Glad he's started throwing it more, once he scrambles. Game 1 he barely threw at all if he got flushed from the pocket. Game 2 was a lot better, after he took a shot in the ribs. Last night I thought he was reverting back to just running, but he pulled up a few times and threw dimes.

FWIW... I was just chatting with a young lady from Edmonton - her ex played hockey with Dubois in Winnipeg.
Had nothing good to say about him. Basically no work ethic and a swell head.
Let's hope THIS change of scenery changes that.

I have faith Carbs can get something out of him! :cross:
-
Is it getting a little windy in central Florida?
-
Rasmus Sandin practiced with the team today.
-
Yea, little breezy but nothing too bad here. West side of the state got hit again, mostly storm surge. Waiting for the news to let us know how bad. Unfortunately it sucks for the whole state when any of it gets hit though. Homeowners insurance gonna cost as much as the mortgage here soon. :-|

Willy gets a permanent A on his sweater this season with Oshie out. Carlson is still the other A, and OV still wears the C.

That's about right. I expect Willy is the next C as well
Although it will be fun watching Willy stand there "discussing" the penalty calls with the refs

More cuts, all teams need to be down to 23 players by 5pm October 7..

Caps still need to cut 8 more guys before October 7.
-
Current Roster carries 19 forward, 9 D and 2 goalies. Backy and Oshie will be LTIR, so that's really 17 forwards currently
Technically they can carry 25 on roster, but only if they can afford the cap hit. Last year the Caps had 24 man roster; 14 forwards, 8 D, 2GT
I expect with Oshie out, the Caps might afford a 25 man roster, but do they want to? So hard to figure, now that CapFriendly is gone.
Vrana hanging in for now, but at best there are 3 spots on roster for 5 guys, and probably only 2 spots (24 man roster) (Sgarbossa, Vranna, Miro, Cristall, Parascak)
So i looked up the waivers guidelines and all except Vranna are exempt from Waivers claims. I would assume just based on age and experience Cristall and Parascak will be cut. The fact that Miro is also waivers exempt seems to work in Vranna's favor....IF he is being seriously considered. (They'd lose nothing by moving Miro to Hershey)
9D...I'd assume McIlrath is the odd man out there, but who knows....Bear hasn't looked all the great to me
So....I'm not sure about Sgarbossa or McIlrath when it comes to waivers.....it says players who "previously cleared waivers and have not played in 10 or more cumulative NHL Games since (clearing waivers) OR been on the NHL roster for 30 cumulative days" are exempt".... So I'd assume both these guys are exempt? Or does that clock start over every year?
I guess we see tonight who does what.
-
So, the number of possessions in a row, scoring points, ended at 17 for the Redskins.. JD5 threw his 1st NFL interception. They had to punt (once) for the 1st time in 3 games. They still smoked Arizona 42-14. The offense has 90's vibes!!
And in NASCAR news, Kansas put on another great weekend of races! JGR pit crews (as usual) screwed Denny and Ty from any chance at winning. Bell (and Kyle Busch, for anyone who cares) ran out of talent while leading. Truex couldn't hold the lead when he had it either. (JGR has to be the weakest "major" team in the sport for giving up the lead on restarts) They're all soft. >:( lol Racing was still good though!
-
Given the weather here yesterday there wasnt much to do, so I watched the race. Or a majority of it anyway. I had to turn the tv off about 5:15 so I could have dinner by 7:00. I think there were about 60 laps left. I shouldve just turned on the play station.
-
So you missed Busch getting loose and spinning out while leading? He was trying to stay ahead of Watermelon man as well as lapping Briscoe. Briscoe went low, then drifted back up mid corner leaving him barely a lane on top, he tried to make it fit, lost air, got loose and swatted bees for a bit. Brought out the yellow, Chastain went on to win. :-| Playstation aint got nonna dat! :raspberry: :snicker:
You have the TV and Stove sharing 1 plug?
-
Caps are down to 30. Parascak is 18, too young for Hershey/AHL.
https://novacapsfans.com/2024/10/01/washington-capitals-return-terik-parascak-to-whls-prince-george/#more-446011 (https://novacapsfans.com/2024/10/01/washington-capitals-return-terik-parascak-to-whls-prince-george/#more-446011)
2 of the 30 are Backy and Oshie, so the Caps only need to trim 5 more players.
-
You have the TV and Stove sharing 1 plug?
As Ive said before, I dont have a tv in the kitchen and Im not gonna put a tv in the kitchen.
-
Your TV don't have sound? :raspberry: (Though the radio is MUCH better for color commentating than any of the guys on TV) Dave Moody, Mike Bagley and Co. still going strong on MRN.. Just wish I could get it to synch with the TV, I'd never have to hear Lee Duffy or whoever they're using now, again.. :smirk:
-

2 of the 30 are Backy and Oshie, so the Caps only need to trim 5 more players.
Current Roster is 18 forwards (16 excluding Backie & Oshie), 9 D, 3 GT
Subtract one goalie (Shephard) and technically they need to trim only 4 more players to get to 23
they wont carry 9 D so basically you are looking at 1 D and 3 wingers get moved (unless the Caps only carry 7 D, but I'd expect they carry 8)
McIlrath might be the natural choice for D, but honestly I like his play. He seems to have more impact than Bear, but here's where that whole waiver thing might come into play. Based on what i read on the waiver rules, moving McIlrath to Hershey - he doesn't have to clear waivers and all others would. McIlrath might be more of a playofff type D man...he's not the best puck mover, but he sure could clear the crease. Today's NHL wants mobile puck movers on D, so who knows?
RMNC had a write up and basically the forward lines are pretty set with the exception of 3LW. With that in mind you have these 5 guys wanting that spot.
Sgarbossa: He's toast. He seem like a solid guy, but he just doesn't make the cut compared to the others
Cristall: I think he has played well, but his age (19) actually hurts him here...he either has to stay with NHL or back to WHL...too young to move to Hershey). I think the Caps will NOT want to burn a whole year of ELC status to test the waters with him (but then WTF do I know). They do have 10 games before making that decision
Miro: Has played solid and I like his game...he's aggressive and not afraid to hit guys and is always trying to score...reminds me of a young Ovi in his style of play. Won't do him any good to make the squad and then sit and watch. Play him or send him back to AHL.
Vranna: His best upside is ...his speed and drive to score, and he has NHL experience. They kind of know what he was years ago and he appears to be the same. Problem is he tends to be defensively irresponsible and I think that doesn't work with Carbs. I think he might be toast.
Milano: only throw him in because his preseason play has left openings for others. He and Vranna are similar styles of play, but Milano seems to at least bump n grind a bit more.
The Caps have room for this undecided 3LW and one extra. I'd assume Milano makes it so to me it comes down to Vranna or Miro
FFS someone's bored
-
How many games did Bear play for us? I don't recall a single thing he did that made me want to see more, tbh. I remember hype, is about all..
So Miro, Milano and Vrana? I don't think they'd hesitate to put Miro back in Hershey for another year. They have ties to Milano. Vrana I figured was a lock, but if he's not really impressed in preseason then I imagine it'll be Milano. (Just a guess, seeing as how I've not paid any attention since last season)
-
Bear was injured when the Caps signed him, he wasnt expected to play more than half of last season. According to his stats, he played in 24 games last year before he sought out the player assistance program for mental issues. I honestly dont remember if he played well or not.
-
Hey Mick.. opinions?

I agree it being a France family dictatorship. On the money end, I hate to defend nascrap, but they do own 12 11 tracks and that is an expensive endeavor.
Chicago Street Track
- Daytona International Speedway
- Michigan International Speedway
- Watkins Glen International
-
I've not been following Denny and Jordan's lawsuit, tbh. I've just heard Denny saying how much money nascar earns over what they pass on to teams. I guess him and Jordan are the only ones with the balls big enough to challenge them. Have to see how it turns out! In the old days, Big Bill and Bill Jr would of probably tried to force 23XI out of the sport. But the France's they have running the show now are incompetent in comparison. Not that I'd agree with them doing it, but these guys are soft, woke, greedy, etc. They've tried everything they can think of to be like the NFL, except when it comes to compensation. lol
I just saw this morning that they had an interview on Sirius Nascar channel and their lawyer was spitting some facts they didn't like, so they took the interview off the channel.

down 3 more, still need to cut 2 by Monday at 5pm..

-
well no surprise their I guess, but it sucks for Bear and Sgarbossa...well it sucks for all, but WTF is Philip?
So cut 2 more of: Vrana, Miro, Milano, Cristall
Im assuming Miro gets a spot by default, and Cristall is too costly to burn a year so its down to Vrana and Miro? I mean if Vrana will play for peanuts, give him a 1 year deal, but I'd assume he would then just go play Swiss/Euro for more money
-
headed to Hershey..

Redskins smoked the Browns. 34-13, was over at halftime. JD5 with another outstanding performance. Boys appear legit! Next week is a big test. Baltimore.
Hamlin plays chicken little again this week in Talladega.. -17 points to the cutoff and running like 28th or something (20+ seconds off the lead pack) coming to 4 to go, when the big one happens. Finishes 10th, +30 going into the go-kart track elimination race next week! :raspberry:
-
You do understand that come next Satrday, this thread will be invalid.

I watched Degga today, mostly for the inevitable wreck. The 4 wide was interesting. Not sure what Hamlins problem is. I can understand the hang back strategy at a couple of these tracks, but this dumb assed stage racing and points doesnt allow that old school shit anymore. Dude got lucky as hell today.
I was also thinking, before the wreck, that this two wide plate racing is stupid. If there was no wreck the winner was going to be one of the front four because no one could pass.
-
I don't even like plate racing anymore. The cars are all the same speed and never give up any handling. 3-4 wide and there's nothing to do but ride around until you get desperate, then ram into someone trying to make something happen. It's all a track position game played with fuel milage, then pray you don't get hit too hard by a push or caught up in someone elses mess.
I'll take the old 2-3 wide 10 deep all day over this crap. Back in the day cars gave up, you could lose the draft, you had room to pull out and try to pass. Saving fuel was a rarity unless there was a timely yellow near the end, where you could stretch it and possibly steal one.
I dunno how Denny got back to 20+ seconds behind. Our coverage cut out for Hurricane Milton update. He must of had an issue on pit road? But he played the chicken little game from lap 4 or 5 when he tried a move that didn't work and fell to the back. Very lucky to still be in contention going into Charlotte (cough) roval (cough) ghey (sneeze) (cough). lol
-
These two got sent down because it didnt require them to be put on waivers. Cristall is too young for the AHL. It appears this opens the door to sign Vrana, no word on that yet.

It looked like Hamlin got shuffled back in the drafting, like how Bush tried to make a pass at the end and immediately lost about 6 spots.
-
Him and Gibbs were both 20+ seconds off the lead pack. So, something they did lost em' the draft. Getting shuffled doesn't normally do that, especially not JGR cars. I read somewhere they took tires instead of just fuel? That may of done it if everyone they pitted with only got fuel.. Either way, lucky ducks to miss that wreck and get his points back.

Im okay with it. Its league minimum one year deal. It's pretty much peanuts for a guy with his "potential" If he doesn't perform, send him to Hershey...if he doesn't clear waivers...oh well.
I hate that CapFriendly is gone. I can't figure the salary cap reliably anymore. Sportrac is basic at best and not always up to date.
So the Caps website doesn't show Vranna on the roster, and it shows Backy on the roster but not Oshie. It also shows Bear on the roster.
Best I can figure is Caps are at 78.2m total with Vranna. I don't know if Bear counts (buried NHL contract)? If so, add another $912,500, so puts Caps just north of $79.1 million
(this is minus the 9.2m and 5.575m from Backy & Oshie on LTIR cap relief)
So, for once, the Capitals have some cap space, but mostly due to injury. Let's hope they are in a position to be wanting to use it later this season.
They are going to need to save $4mil or so of that for a goal tender next season.....and that's if they only want one.
-
Ive said it before, Ill say it again. Caps dot com is one of the worst run websites in the league for getting information to the fans. But, they did post this today..
https://novacapsfans.com/2024/10/08/washington-capitals-release-2024-25-opening-night-roster/ (https://novacapsfans.com/2024/10/08/washington-capitals-release-2024-25-opening-night-roster/)
-
Well I'm happy to see McIlrath make the squad, but will he get to play? I see Hershey also starts play Oct 12th. Back to back Calder cup champs will not have their team captain in attendance for opening night festivities.
-
Who's Bears team Captain? Mcllrath? Anyway, Im fine with Vrana on a 1 year. Only downside is it's more of a "win now" attempt, instead of a "let gets these younger guys NHL ice" move, but we'll see... They've certainly been dealing in the offseason like they don't want to rebuild. Never seen it actually work, but shit, what do I know. I was all pissed off when the Redskins moved Sam Howel (and drafted a QB) after last season.
-
Mick!..
-
so they have the opening night roster, but not all those guys will dress, no?
I mean they won't have 13 forwards and 8 D on the ice?
I hope The Undertaker actually gets a starting sweater
-
WHAT??
-
Lots of new guys and I haven't watched any pre-season so the opening night will be interesting. I'm hoping that Alexyev is in the top six defenseman so they continue to develop him. This should be the year he really proves his value. Without thinking through the righty-lefty thing, I would think it would be between him and TVR for that last spot.
-
WHAT??
just makin sure..
that you arent out trying to to fish in this weather
:snicker:

Pussy ass hurricane can't even show it's face in the daylight! :raised-eyebrow:  Just had a palm tree snap in half in the back yard. Power still on though, so, fuck it!! :raspberry:
Thanks for checkin' on me though! :hearts:

welp, I saw Mick was logged in briefly this morning so he must have survived
In other news, the Caps waived a guy today that I had no clue about. Apparently he had been injured the entire time of training camp and was just cleared.

Also, in the ironic department, the Hurricanes game in Tampa Saturday has been postponed because of the hurricane.

Anthony Mantha scored a on a shorthanded breakaway with nice finish for Calgary vs Seattle. Then got an assist on the PP. Then got a 5 minute fighting major. Gordie Howe hat trick for Big Tony
Apparently ANTMAN left his stone hands somewhere between Washington & Vegas.
Seattle was up 4-1 and Flames came back to go up 5-4. Krakken tied it and Flames win in OT.
Hens lost to Rags 6-0
-
Yep, I made it.. Hadn't seen -that- kinda Mother Nature here since 2004. Im ready for some hockey!!
(weatherman says there's another one brewing between the 17th-20th) ::)

The guys that run weatherbell.com seem to be better forecasters than NOAA. But this is what NOAA thinks..
-
Utah Hockey Club and St Louis Blues lead the entire NHL in the standings. Currently the only two teams with 2-0 records
-
....
Also, in the ironic department, the Hurricanes game in Tampa Saturday has been postponed because of the hurricane.
I wonder if the Canes consider a name change after all the devastation in NC from Helene
-
Right. Lets name a team after something that is a known concern in the Carolinas, then get upset at the name when it actually happens.
-
one more day..
:uh-huh:
anticipated lines, per the coach..
Ovechkin - Strome - Mangiapane
McMichael - Dubois - Wilson
Milano - Lapierre - Protas
Duhaime - Dowd - Raddysh
Chychrun - Carlson
Fehervary - Roy
Sandin - TVR
Lindgren

I don't like the situation tomorrow night. NJ has already played 3 games, and we've been sitting around for a week.
-
Damn, If that roster is true, 6 of the 19 Caps getting ice I have no real clue who they are. Bring it!! :uh-huh:
-
I don't like the situation tomorrow night. NJ has already played 3 games, and we've been sitting around for a week.
The NHL did the same shit to the Caps last season. But, NJ was part of the global games crap and played two in Prague vs the Sabers on the 4th and 5th that counted as regular season games while the rest of the league was still playing preseason games.
-
Im gonna have to do the GDT when I get home about 4-4:30. Im running late this morning.
-
I watched part of the Kings game with Kuemper in net....he looked slow to me and gave up one HUGE rebound, but he has only allowed 3 goals in 2 games and Kings are 1 - 0 -1....losing in shootout to Boston after a 1-1 tie thru OT
Kuemper is 1-0-1 with a 1.5 GAA and .945 Sv%
-
Roy is going to miss several games, McIlrath skated in his place today at practice. And, OV skated at right wing today.

-
sucks for Roy, but hope its short term. Im comfortable with McIlrath or Alexeyev though.
Not surprised at all that Logan Thompson will start in goal.
I expect we will see Vranna as well...Milano cant find his groove and that 3rd line was pretty forgettable
-
I'd really like the see Alexyev get the start instead of McIlrath. I think Alexyev has a shot at being really good - especially if they could get him to put on a few pounds and get some snarl in his game. McIrath is a good story though and brings some physicality.
-
lines from practice today..
Protas - Strome - Ovechkin
McMichael - Dubois - Wilson
Vrana - Lapierre - Mangiapane
Duhaime - Dowd - Raddysh
Chychrun - Carlson
Fehervary - McIlrath
Sandin - TVR
Thompson
Lindgren
-
What's this 6pm start time? Oct 22 vs the Flyers? On a Tuesday night? Strange.
-
Home game times are all over the place this season. The league schedulers get input from the home team, but based on what Ive seen, tv can and does over rule the home team.
-
3rd line last game was a -3. I dont' think adding Vranna to that line will help in the defensive responsibility.
Also don't think moving Protas to the top line is worth the experiment. I'd put a scorer (like Vrana) on that line before I'd put Protus, but maybe they want a big body?

Caps vs Stars tonight, it looks like lines are the same as last game with Lindy in net
-
Damn...Stars are 4-0, allowed only 5 goals in 4 games, with 2 shutouts.
Bring it Caps!
-
I like playing against teams with unrealistic stats, early in the year. There's a good chance we can spoil some of them!
-
Yeah undefeated lasts only so long! "Down goes
Frazier!" Dallas
ran across this the other day....funny...
-
Hamlin must be saving his equipment for Pheonix. Which by the way is fukin stupid, to go from Charlotte to Vegas to Miami to Phoenix.
-
Hamlin probably got eliminated with Logano's fuel mileage win. Must win either Homestead or Martinsville. Whole thing is a Mickey Mouse Cup anyway. Larson and Bell and possibly Byron are the only ones who should "realistically" even have a chance at this point, but.. Here we are!

The NHL is running their stupid assed Frozen Frenzy tonight. All 32 teams are playing, the Caps got the 6pm time slot.
-
I was looking at Caps schedule...
They have 13 pairs of back to back games this seasons (starting tonight/tomorrow) Every single one of them with travel between cities. 5 Pairs are both away games, 5 are home/away, 3 are away/home.
4 November
4 December
1 January
1 February
0 March
1 April
November thru December they have a back to back in 7 out of 9 weeks - that's pretty grueling, all with travel
I'm sure all teams play relatively the same number of back to backs, but virtually 2 months in a row is some BS, ALL of them with travel is too.
So....I peeked at Shittsburg just to compare; they have 10 total, 2 pairs are both home games, so 8 pairs with travel (4 are both away games). 5 of the back to backs are Home for the second game
1 Oct
4 Nov
2 Dec
2 Jan
1 Feb
0 Mar
0 April
I checked the Rags for further comparison. They play a whopping 14 back to backs, two are both home/home, 4 are away/home, 5 are home/away, and 3 are away/away. They do only have one month with 4 back to back games in it (March),and not more than 2 in any other month.
Islanders: 12 total, 0 both home, 3 away/home, 3 home/away, 6 away/away, but only one month with more than 2, and thats March with 3
I would expect more isolated teams to have more of a demanding schedule so a peeked at a couple; Winnipeg and Edmonton
Winnipeg: 8 total; 1 home/home, 2 away/home, 1 home/away, 4 away/away, only November has 3, all 5 other months have only 1 back/back
Edmonton: 12 total; 0 h/h, 2 a/h, 2 h/a, 8 a/a, (3 in November, 1 or 2 in other 5 months of season)
Nobody comes close to the Caps schedule with a grueling 8 back to backs for 2 straight months, all with travel.
I am a die-hard Caps fan so I am sure I am biased, but their schedule is always more demanding in one way or another compared to most other teams.
(yes, i was bored)

Rich is so disappointed he ignored it

Caps have the 4th best record in all the NHL...based on winning percentage and points. The top three teams in the league have also only played 6 games
Winninpeg 6-0-0
Rangers 5-0-1
Calgary 5-0-1
Caps 5-1-0
Technically Devils are ahead of them in standings with 11 pts, but have played 9 games

Dmitry Orlov will be a UFA after this season. Rumor is he will go back to Russia to play with Kuzy.

Roy can be activated at any time because hes already missed a week. They needed a roster spot to bring Sgar up. Sgarbossa skated at 3rd center this mornings practice, with Lapierre sitting out.
-
Caps are 6-2-0 and in 3rd place in division
Canes are also 6-2-0 and in 4th (Canes have won 4 in a row)
Devils in first 6-4-2, but have played 4 more games
Rags 6-2-1 in 2nd, played 1 more game
and....Shittsburgh in the cellar losing four in a row. 3-7-1 :uh-huh: Actually, Hens are 2nd worst of all 32 teams except for Sharks who have won only 1 game.
-
The Caps PP did look a bit better last night, but still didnt score. The PP is 2 fer 26 so far this season..
G#1 - 1-3
G#2 - 1-3
G#3 - 0-5
G#4 - 0-2
G#5 - 0-3
G#6 - 0-3
G#7 - 0-3
G#8 - 0-4

Means they were 3 for 6 to start the season. Now, 0 fer 20 and counting! :-(

On the brighter side...Carbs said today Chychrun is day to day... but prob not ready to play tomorrow
and Roy is getting closer and closer, but dont know about tomorrow yet
Carbs was asked if ALexeyev was just a straight plug in for tomorrow and he kind of hemmed and hawed then...."Alexeyev was out today for personal reasons". No idea what that means, but supposed to "figure out more in the next several hours" WTF does that mean? That either means nothing or a whole lot of something

TV said PP was 0 fer 17, 18, 19 and 20 last night. :raised-eyebrow: Redneck maff is pirfect! I mean purfect! Shit, you know what I mean! :raspberry: :snicker:

Sgarbossa would be my guess. Maybe Milano, he hasn't helped his chances this year with his play.

Ooof. 4 back to back games this month, all with travel. Thats some BS scheduling.
-
Sgarbossa would be my guess. Maybe Milano, he hasn't helped his chances this year with his play.
Sgarbossa, McIlrath and Iorio are the call ups so far. Pretty sure they cant send anyone else down without putting them on waivers.

Whole thing is a :poop: show. 3 of the top 4 points cars on the year aren't in the "final" lol Gonna be the 1st race in 30 years I don't watch or try to record and watch later.. Fuck em'. I'll revist in Feburary but they're losing me with the bullshit.

What a beautiful fucking day in America for a hockey game! :uh-huh:

We do have clear blue skies today with a light breeze and low humidity, but 76-78* is a tad warm for hockey.

Roy was a full participant in this mornings practice, but no word yet on anyone being sent to Hershey.

Roy will play, McIlrath is the scratch, Iorio was sent back to Hershey. Milano in over Vrana again.

Well with Roy in, I'd expect Mac is the scratch.
Vrana...dunno, maybe shoulda never got caught doin lines on Carbs desk ;)
-
Sgarbossa has been sent back to Hershey. That should mean Chychrun is ready to return.
-
Well one of my sons has a HULU account and we looked on there last night, but cant tell if we actually get to watch it. He (well his GF actually) has Hulu & Disney, but they dont have the "sports package" that includes ESPN+.
Stupid to give Hulu this game, where a large percentage of hockey fans would want to see this game and can't. How is this promoting the NHL?
-
Guess who has hulu -and- the disney+espn package??
<----------------HINT!! :raspberry: :snicker:
-
Vrana in for Milano tonight. Apparently Milano suffered an upper body injury vs Nashville and will miss a few games. It seems odd they would have sent Sgarbossa down knowing this because now they are going call somebody back up.
The only other line change appears to be the goalie, Lindgren in net.
-
Guess who has hulu -and- the disney+espn package??
<----------------HINT!! :raspberry: :snicker:
You notice this redneck didn't post this in time for anyone to get to his place in time. sum bitch
Thats all right...He be the only one watching the Caps play their worst game of the year so far.
-
It's probably for the best, I rarely answer the door if the bell rings anyway.
Hulu+Espn+ package isn't too bad! Like 87$ a month with locals and all the channels they offer. Saves around 50$/month from the same shit Directv offered. Just gotta get used to the "stream" part. Menus and shit aren't as user friendly. And everything "live" is about 30 seconds behind. :(
-
Today the Caps recalled Sgarbossa from Hershey, moved Milano to IR and took Chychrun off IR.
-
Caps schedule next 8 games - Oof. It's probably the toughest matchups of any 8-game stretch this year - all good teams.
Toronto, Avs, Vegas, Utah, Avs, NJ, Florida, Tampa Bay. 2 back to backs in there as well.
Guess we see what this team is truly made of in November
-
Hes only 29, he should be able to recover from this..

Oof. Fucking ACL's.. Hope the best for him! Today's medicine, he'll recover, if he really wants to!
-
Grubauer last played for Seattle on Nov 5, he will miss another week at a minimum. It appears he took a horse hoof to the face.
Grubi had an unfortunate accident at home, and hes fine, head coach Dan Bylsma said
He owns a horse and volunteers with a horse rescue.

Knew a girl in high school who took a (horse) kick to the head. She recovered, eventually.

This is a VERY good point. We are now 1/6 of the way into the season, and we have a first glimpse of what we have, but we need more information.
We now have the full defense corps in place, so we can get a read on them. MAYBE we've got enough, but we'll see as the season plays out.
I think for better or worse we are going to ride the two goalies we have through the season, so there won't be any changes there.
Re: the forwards: With Protas looking like a fabulous complement on Ovie's opposite side and McMichael's breakout, lines 1, 2, and 4 look set. The ONLY uncertainty looks to be line 3. Mangiapane should be a perfectly fine fixture there, but Lapierre has been the one clear offensive disappointment so far, Sgarbossa is a career AHL'er, and I don't know whether I believe in Milano/Vrana at LW. The nice thing is, with some money to spend at the trade deadline this year, one thing that can reasonably be expected to be available at manageable cost would be upgrades to line 3, if it comes to that.
Of course, injuries are something that can derail a team at any time, and could necessitate additional moves, but that's something that can't be anticipated.
It's way too early to draw any definitive conclusions about this team, but the early indications are quite promising.
-
I agree with BlackICE - the 3rd line need work. Sgarbossa looked great vs the Blues and that line generated some good scoring chances...but I agree Sgarbossa is a career AHL guy, and only reason he is here is Lappy isnt cutting it. With Lappy, that line has been a total defensive liability to go along with zero scoring threat. Sgarbossa at least settles that line and makes it more defensively responsible, but there has to be better options.
I think we would have seen McMike at 3c already except that he's been tremendous at 2LW.
Sucks for Lappy - he looked better than McMike at times last year, but Lappy has regressed and McMike has just been impressive.
Anyway, time will tell.
Go Caps
-
Lappi is same size and weight as McMike. 1 year younger.. I think he'll get there! Like was said, last year he seemed ahead of McMike at times.
-
I think part of the reason McMichael didn't look good at times last year was that he was forced by injuries into being a top-line CENTER - which he wasn't ready for. He was competing against higher level opponents, with the Center's primary responsibility of driving the play. Now he is on the wing, where his primary responsibility is scoring the puck. It sure is looking in the early going as if his talents in that area are more suitable to high-line placement than his talents as a center.
Can we send Lapierre back to Hershey without exposing him to waivers? If so, maybe he should go back to get consistent playing time for awhile and hopefully get his mojo back. Or, who knows? Maybe his skill set is more suited to the wing, as well? I don't know here.
-
Holy Shit!! Caps get Lars Eller back from the Pens! 3rd line Center say whaaaaat!!!
3rd and a 5th for Lars, who makes 2.45m and is a UFA next year. I like it!! Let Pierre go back to Hershey for another year and be ready for 2025-26.

-
I'm good with this. :uh-huh:
-
The Caps have been abysmal at the faceoff dot, this should help quite a bit. Sgarbossa sent back to Hershey, and I assume this moves Lapierre to permanent scratch.
-
I really wish Lappy would have stepped forward this year and I feel like they should have given him more time, but at this point management gets the benefit of the doubt. I always liked Lars, but we were all complaining about him at the end of his time with the Caps. Maybe coming back to a team that seems to have some potential will fire him up and it will be a great move.
-
Shit, if Lapierre is just gonna be a healthy scratch it kinda dampens the mood. Was hoping he'd go back to Hershey and gain that experience with lots of ice time.
-
me too. maybe he would have to clear waivers?
-
Shit, if Lapierre is just gonna be a healthy scratch it kinda dampens the mood. Was hoping he'd go back to Hershey and gain that experience with lots of ice time.
I totally agree with you, Mick - I think if he's going to sit consistently in DC he'd be better served going back down to Hershey. Which makes me wonder if he ISN'T going to sit in DC. Could it be that they will move him to the wing to get him going? Of course, that suggests that Vrana/Milano will be sitting, but who knows?
I think the early move to get Eller suggests that (1) Caps' management was REALLY displeased with Lapierre at 3C, which gets me back to the question about moving him to wing; and (2) Management is serious about this season. No mucking along to see if things shake out somehow. With this obvious a hole in the lineup, try to fill it ASAP before it has a chance to start affecting the record significantly. This is the type of move that a team makes when they think they have a chance to make some noise.
-
Lapierre at 3C tonight as Eller didnt get in, or wont be in town in time to play tonight. Thompson in net, the first time a goalie will start two games in a row this season.
-
I like this move. I always liked Eller. I was okay with them moving him at the time just based on getting something for nothing where they were rebuilding.
I think Eller was an excellent 3c for us. I am sure he has slowed a bit and dropped off in scoring, but at 3c, I think you are looking for someone who is defensively responsible first (which Lappy def was not). Eller is also a good sized body and gives the Caps someone they can rely on. Lappy should go back to Hershey IMO. He's young and will get more out of playing than watching...look what it did for McMike.
I'm okay with trying Lappy at wing on the third line as well but mostly because neither Vranna nor Milano has done anything worth noting, and Vrana is a defensive liability most of the time. I really wanted to like Vrana and celebrate his return, but he has showed me nothing but more of the same reasons they got rid of him to begin with.
Eller is solid PK guy too, so you can put him out there to save some minutes on your top line guys.
And another thing.....Hens season is for SHIT so that probably enabled this move :)
-
Im pretty sure Lapierre needs to be put on waivers to be sent to Hershey. But I think its a gamble that needs to happen, he wont get better here sitting out all the time.
Also not sure why Eller couldnt dress tonight. The Hens played at home Monday and are at home tonight.
-
Eller is a good defensive guy and very good on the boards. I don't mind the move at all.
-
Hopefully you guys are right and they move him to wing and see if he perks up! Im sure he'll get a shot there, just not sure how many.
It -is- strange Eller can't dress tonight?
-
doing some further reading on the subject, it appears Lapierre can be sent to Hershey without waiving him
-
doing some further reading on the subject, it appears Lapierre can be sent to Hershey without waiving him
Yes, i would think so, because of his age, despite his NHL games played already
-
Also not sure why Eller couldnt dress tonight. The Hens played at home Monday and are at home tonight.
The Caps didn't keep his old jerseys, so they don't have any for him to wear
-
I'm too angry and annoyed to sleep after that debunkle!
Rant coming on.......
:wtf:
What a complete and utter clusterfuck!
WE HAD IT!
I can't even blame O'Rourke, a ref that has been historically anti Caps. We had one goal waived off. They had two!
That open net non goal was ridonculous. There's no legitimate word that could describe it.
Coming in to the third period, we were in control. The Laffs came with the expected push, as ......expected.
WHO'S STOOOOOPID idea was it to chip n chase and ice the puck repeatedly? WHO'S?
Let me at 'em with a big wet fish to slap them around the head! A lot.
-
Look, we have a decent team this year, give or take one or two, so this was a big disappointment tonight.
After the second period, I was thinking about all the positive things that I like about our team this year. I thought it would be easier to list some of the negatives, as there were far fewer of them.
I may be slightly harsher than I would otherwise have been had it not been for that last period. Jus' sayin'.
I'll start with ThomCat. More like ThomFish the way he flounders about like a manic beached cod on his belly most of the time. Now I like Thommy, I do, but this floundering concerns me. He does it a lot. A lot. Both goalies are weak up top. I dont think either one has nudged ahead in that goalie battle and TBH, I'm fine with them sharing time and games.
What is the point of Roy? Bring back McIlrath.
Milano needs to get sent down. He had a couple of moments and I was a little enamoured with him to begin with because I thought he was related to the fabulous Alyssa . Meh. Kid can't cut it. At least not yet.
La Frog? A little too early for him also, I think. Needs seasoning. :snicker:
Sack our PP coach. And whoever calls for that chip n chase bollocks! :raspberry:
-
82 games a season, there are going to be a couple duds. Good teams will only have a couple, average or worse teams have more than a couple.
The coach didnt hide his disappointment/anger at the way they played the 2nd half of the game either.
-
Also, I'm wondring what's happening with Willy? Mc Mike is thriving on that line. Willy is not. Mis match maybe?
-

This is our third.
-
What if Eller was our 2C?
-
I like Dubs at 2C with Micky. Eller is a better fit with Willy, methinks. .... ..... Hmmmm.
-
Carbs was pissed, but I wouldn't let him off the hook either. It was obvious as soon as the 3rd started they we were playing like shit, dump and defend was our only play. He just kept trotting the same lines (and mates) out there the entire 3rd. Maybe switch it up by the 10 minute mark if shit isn't getting any better?
I preach it every time. Can't just go to sleep and play defense with a lead. Luckily we've not had GOOD teams do to us what they did last night. But good teams just keep coming, the whole game.
It's a reminder that while we're not as bad as we figured, we're also not as good as we wish. We were fortunate to even get a point last night.
-
whoops...wrong thread
-
Carbs interview today...mentioned Milano will not make trip and is "week to week". Sucks for him. I imagine Caps will move him to IR retroactively if they have not already. (Is he already on IR?)
I expect that leaves room for Lappy to stay with club...hmmm did they need to send Sgarbossa down to make room for Eller?
Caps website is worthless for updated info - it still shows Sgarbossa, Milano, Lappy, Vrana, Iorio and Eller all on the roster.... Of course it shows Backy and Oshie too, so where to you find the "active roster"
Without Milano or Sgarbossa, there are 13 skaters on active roster, plus 8 D and 2 GT - totals 23 which is the active roster max
-
Milano was put on IR two games ago to clear a roster spot for Chychrun being reactivated.
Players on IR or LTIR usually stay on the roster. Players than have been sent to the AHL shouldnt be. Caps dot com is the worst run team website in the league. To verify who is in DC or Hershey, I usually check Hershey first. They make changes to the roster the second they get word a player is coming or going.
With Milano on IR, Oshie and Backy on LTIR, Sgarbossa and Iorio actually in Hershey, Eller makes 23 active players. Someone will have to go when Milano gets healthy. With the crappy cap sites still available for free, I cant tell who is waiver exempt for Hershey and who isnt. The only one we know at the moment is Lapierre is exempt. I have no idea about McIlrath or Alexeyev. But as I recall, Alexeyev stayed in DC because hes not exempt.
-
Nascar sucks, the Caps suck and the Redskins suck. :-(
-
You should watch the redskins this season, they said
They are really playing well, they said..
as they lose two in a row

Reality always has a way of fucking shit up. :snicker: Gotta hold out hope JD is still nursing those ribs, but damn if he don't look average the last 2-3 weeks. Last night was the worst so far. :-\
-
Quick...look at the Standings. Caps are #1 in the division and in the whole Eastern conference, and #2 in all the NHL behind Winnipeg.
Canes and Devils play each other tonight, so one of them will go back into 1st tonight in the East
-
Caps just announced OV is out week to week. It sounds like they were still in Utah this morning as they said further updates will be announced after meeting with team doctors on Wednesday. So, he may or may not be injured, but definitely got hurt. There is a difference.
-
Anything but torn ligaments and I'll consider it a win.. :cross:
-
Just announced, the Caps have called up Miroshnichenko from Hershey to presumably fill an empty left wing slot.
The Caps obviously had yesterday off, Im curious if this call was made yesterday so Miro was here for practice this morning.

Not a surprising move, but where does he slot? It appears that lines 2 and 4 will remain intact, so I don't think McMichael is moving into Ovie's spot.
There's talk of Mangiapane moving up to 1LW, which would leave Vrana/Miro/Lapierre as potential wingers for Eller.
Alternatively, one could just slot Miro at 1LW, not disrupting anything else. OR move Vrana to 1LW to reward him for his recent good play, and have Miro/Mangiapane flanking Eller.
-
Putting Miro at 1L so nothing else is disrupted would be my first move.
OV was moved to IR. So hes out at least 10 days. Assuming OV was put on IR yesterday, it appears the earliest he can play is Nov 30 vs the Devils. He will miss 5 games minimum.
The Caps also retroactively put Milano on LTIR, which is usually a salary move. Milano will be eligible to play Nov 29 vs the Islanders.
-
I'm betting Ovie is out more like 3-4 weeks so he'd miss about 10-12 games. Then, he'll need to get back in game shape. This was really unfortunate.
-
With the quotes coming out from Vrana and Wilson ("It was emotional at first.." "We have to learn to win w/o Ovi..") Im fully expecting he's done for the year. Fans of DC sports know, you can't have nice things. :( Guess they'll tell us more tomorrow.
edit:
Well, not sure why more haven't reported this, but I'll take it as a DUB for now!

If he's done for the season, imo he's not getting 26 goals or whatever next season. It wont end well..
edit: BUT! Get this, it wasn't even his knee.. lol He has a fractured fibula. Out 4-6 weeks. And again, I'll take it!! Anything but surgery on fucking ligaments!!!

Caps just announced..
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin underwent further evaluation with team doctors. It was confirmed that Ovechkin has a fracture to his left fibula and is anticipated to miss 4-6 weeks.
I would guess he will be put on LTIR retroactively
-
Wasn't even his knee.. Get well soon Ovi!! We'll see after the Christmas break!!
-
its a wee crack in the bone. Old school guys could play on that :snicker:
Tape it up and he's good to go

given the type of athlete hes been I wouldnt be surprised if he heals faster than average, but Im not prepared to bet money on that
-

Yes it's hard to say with a "fracture". That could be a hairline crack or a crevice. Hairline fracture could be well on the way to healed in 2-3 weeks.
I expect the very soonest we see Ovi skating is 3-4 weeks and not in a game until January.
And hell it's been 5 days already....another couple weeks and he'll be good.
Who wore the "C" last night? Or do we just go with 3 "A" ?

I looked and didnt see one. Kind of harder to see cuz they all hav that 50th logo on their jerseys
-
Yea, I was trying to see if there was a third A last night and didnt see one. Teams used to make note of who was wearing the letters on their websites, they stopped doing that when the nhl changed its webpage layout. I havent found anywhere else that regularly and reliably reports this.
Lines from this mornings practice, Carbs is cooking spaghetti again. No word on Duhaime either, hopefully just a maintenance day..

Saw it in a tweet. IIRC it was Carlson, Wilson and Strome.
And the Redskins fucking suuuuuuuuk again too. :(

Shittsburgh is occupying the cellar of the division. :)
They have 4 regulation wins this season. (as do the Sharks, Flyers)
Need Montreal to win their next game (3 in hand over Hens) and the Hens will be worst in the Eastern Conference.
If Montreal, Chicago, Nashville all win their next game, Hens will be worst in all the NHL. :uh-huh:

Yea, but its too early in the season to rule them out. Theyve turned it around before to everyones surprise.

Pens used to be a well run organization. Not sure how they will do now with their hot shot GM, but they may be in the mode of tanking again for 2 or 3 years and lucking into a couple number one picks. It would be nice though to see Cindy have to retire while they are at the bottom.

OK, now I'm starting to get greedy.
It certainly was a good move to get Eller back here to bolster the third line. But once Ovie returns, I still think we are most unsettled there, even though we have numbers now. Plus, if there is a shortage on this team, it is natural right wings.
I just saw some stories about the Rangers wanting to shake things up. There were a few players mentioned that they could move, and one of them is Kaapo Kakko, age 23, a natural right wing who was the #2 pick in the 2019 draft and has played in the NHL since he was drafted. He has played on the 3rd line this season, and currently has a $2.4 million cap hit, I believe. I would LOVE to have this guy with Eller and Mangiapane as L3, and let's go. It leaves Vrana/Lapierre/Miroshnichenko swinging in the wind, but perhaps one of them could go as part of a trade for him. Another guy I'd throw in is Alexeyev - the Rangers are currently stronger on the right side of the defense than the left, maybe they'd give him a chance, because the Caps sure aren't.
The question is, should the Caps make a move like this and maybe lose a bit of their depth and a young potentially breakout player or players, but really solidify the starting lineup? Is the team good enough to justify making a move like this? One reason I might do it is because Iorio is, I think, having a good season at Hershey and could serve as depth even this season.
-
Interesting BlackIce. I'm not sure the Rangers would trade a young guy like that - especially to the Caps. I would also hate to give up Alexyev as a throw-in as I have been really wanting them to develop him more. He could be very solid for a long time, especially if they get him to use his big body.
I am thrilled where the Caps are and have to eat some crow as I thought they should be tanking for a lottery pick. I'm still not thinking they could win the Cup, but they could get on a run and scare some people, and who knows....
I think the key guys that will really make a difference are Chyckrun and PLD. If those guys get even better, then we could be a contender.
-

Isn't Miro a natural RW? Though I've not really seen much from him other than hustle and good hockey sense, I'd hate to lose him, especially to the Rags.
-

He is listed on the Caps site as a LW. I know the team has been shuttling a few guys back and forth between LW and RW because of their shortage of dedicated RW'ers. In fact, Protas was a RW when he moved up to L1, though there was also some scuttlebutt about Ovie at RW sometimes. Whether that was an effort to get Protas time at LW or whatever, I do not know.
With regard to reservations that people have about giving up particular young players, I understand that. But the price for a guy like this is going to be high. I'd like to think that, say, Lapierre and TVR could get it done, but I doubt it. The alternative, which the Rangers MAY be looking for, for all I know, is draft picks. But they'd probably have to be high, because now the Caps look as though they could be a team whose picks would be toward the end of the round.
All of this is why I asked the question at the end of my original post - is the Caps' performance thus far sufficient to justify a move like this? It isn't an easy call - the bloom COULD come off the rose as the season progresses. There are some players who have broken out or are playing over their career-established heads right now, and we could definitely see regression later in the season.
The other factor to take into account is that, while Lindgren and Thompson have been OK in goal so far, they haven't shown themselves to be elite. But I think, in no small reason because of their cost, we ARE going to ride with them this year unless/until injury strikes, and even in that event, we may just bring up one of the Hershey goalies to fill in. Is THAT a good enough enough tandem to consider making what would look to be a pretty big move with some risk at this point? We all know of conditions where a good team runs into elite goaltending and gets knocked out. To this point, signs are that we can't expect to be the team with elite playoff goaltending.
-
I think we are good enough to make a significant move but I doubt the Rangers would be our dance partner. They went into the year as a Cup contender and now they are panicking - but if they make moves, I don't think it will be to give up younger assets - but I have been wrong a lot this year.
I'm not too worried about the bloom coming off the rose. You could argue that while we have some guys that are over-performing, we have some other guys that could kick in even more. Mangiopani was a 35 goal scorer and he could put a few more in. PLD should have at least 5 more goals and could break out. Raddysh was looking average at best and he is really playing well now. Lappy has had a few good games now and he could be a lot better going forward. And Strome could/should have had more goals.
I've learned that they are never as good as we think when they are hot, but never as bad as we think when they are cold. Overall though, I'm loving the composition of this team and it is so much better watching the games!
-
I am surprised the rose bloomed as quickly as it did. I expected more struggles early on as the new guys became familiar with the rest of the team on the ice.
-
I agree with surprise at the level of our success this early with so many new pieces. For once, nearly every change/new player we acquired/made has had significant impact (other than Vranna).
I would hate to part with Miro. He is young, but loaded with talent and SHOOTS the puck. He really reminds me of Ovi with his style of play. Hes so young its hard to evaluate him yet...he'd be the last prospect I would move.
Lappy I run hot and cold with...he shows improvement, then slacks off, then better, etc. He is stilly young though.
I think honestly Carbs has had significant impact on the development of the mid-younger guys especially. McMike, Protas, and Strome have ALL benefited with Carbs as HC. Not saying they have not done the work and put in the effort, but someone or several someones are help guiding their improved play beyond just a years' maturity.
I could see them moving Alexeyev and no fault of his own, but basically all the D are playing well. I think ALexeyev would get more ice if Chycrun wasn't playing so well or if Sandin was still iffy. TVR I'd be okay moving, Sandin for the right price, and Alexeyev as well.
Alexeyev is 25, Sandin is 24, and Chicklets is only 26 (damn he IS getting paid next year)
I would love the Caps to sign Chicklets NOW to a new deal....then you can safely move another D. If Chicklets gets to FA this summer, he could really get paid if he continues to excel this season. If caps moved a D now, then couldn't retain Chicklets, then you looking for more D next year.
I'm not sold on our goaltending...they are super bargain and play well enough, but I don't think anyone really thought we would be relying on them for a DEEP playoff run this year.
Okay, time to stop counting all these unhatched chickens...
Anyway, its nice to have these kinds of problems...like...where do we put Ovi when he returns ;D
-
I can't give Carbs enough credit for how this team has taken shape and performed. Also, major shout out to Chris Patrick (Caps GM) he's done a hell of a job assembling a competitive team!
Im with the camp that I'd roll with what we have. We're in Ovi mode for the next year+. See what happens around deadline time, but Im always weary of someone coming in a fucking up the chemistry. (And some young prospect going elsewhere and becoming Seags or Forsberg)
-
Seigs.. ;D
The Siegenthaler trade was money, as I recall. Caps werent going to be able to afford to keep him. Still a bad move in my opinion, I feel there were other options at that time. Though I dont remember what they were. The Forsberg trade.. ooffa. He never got a chance here. He was traded while still in the minors, and I couldnt tell you what the Caps got in return. Other than the shaft, unlubed.
There are a couple guys Id consider moving. But at this juncture I see no reason to. We dont need to bring in a Shattenkirk only to bench a Schmidt. Which really messed up the D chemistry that season.

Rich - I didn't realize Alexyev is older than Sandin. I'd still like to keep him and give him a real chance to develop further. TVR would be my first guy to go, but I think he is just a trade deadline guy that would get a third round pick. I don't think other teams would be that high on him. Based on that, I think the Caps keep them all just to have depth when the inevitable injuries come.
I'm afraid the boat may have sailed on re-signing Chyckrun. They might have had a chance to get a longer term deal when they got him, but I bet Chyckun is determined to go to free agency for two reasons - obviously the money, but also picking the right team to be on for the long run. He has had to bounce around and play on crappy teams, so I bet he really want to be able to pick. I was assuming the Caps would be crummy and he would not want to be here long-term, but maybe now we have a chance.

Yeah, I've been wanting Alexeyev to be full time starter for a couple years. Time do it was last year or before....dump some old guys contracts (TVR, Jensen) and let Alexeyev play. If I recall, his development was slowed by an early career injury and then Covid fucked a couple seasons for him so he's a later bloomer, but not his fault.
You probably right about Chychrun. Caps organization seems like a solid place tho - many guys come here and like it and stay long term (Oshie, Stromme, . Not sure about a cup run soon, but hell if we play like we've been and maybe get a real Netminder (no offense) then maybe we could be contenders in the near future.
I think maybe he'd like a deal with Tampa or FLA, but hell, maybe he had enough swamp already. Who knows? Glad to see an acquisition shine though...good for him and the team.
Haven't heard boo about Jensen in Ottawa - looked it up he has 8A, 1G in 24 games and is a +11. Pretty decent stats for him. (got to suck to get traded)

If the Caps and Alexyev are smart, they will use this time to bulk him up and get him stronger. If he could use that big body and get more physical he could last for a while in the NHL as a journeyman defenseman. I'm afraid they are going to let him go though.
Maybe the key to Chychrun signing long-term might be if he loves Carbury. They could sell him that he would be taking over for Carlson and be the leader on this team once Ovi retires. A good step in that direction right now would be to have him replace Carlson on the PP once Ovi is back. That would be a real shakeup, which the Caps have never been willing to do, but I think the PP would be a lot better.

I wouldnt be surprised if its a political reason, or, betmann is an idiot.. could go either way

That performance by Willy against the Habs was just awesome - and inspiring to the whole team. It looks like he has a grapefruit on the side of his face. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have some broken bones in his face. His helmet visor may have prevented damage to his eye-socket.
I think he pretty much sent a message to the clowns that left him off the Canada team. So did Logan Thompson. Good for them!!

Apparently the Caps players had Sunday off, because zero news comes out from this team when the players have a day off.
Wilson is being evaluated today, just to make sure nothing is broken. It did seem like that was a lot swelling for not breaking anything. OV skated again this morning before practice in full gear. Still is a no contact jersey.

Hopefully the pain is residing some today. Yesterday I bet it was THROBBING!!

But for real...his face looks cartoonish. Don't know how he didn't loose any teeth on that.
A bit surprised they didn't remove him from game for concussion worries.
Dude is one bad hombre - great time for him to step up, team needed it...that's your next team Captain right there.

Yesterday Ted Leonsis said OV will be out another 2-3 weeks, as there is no rush to get him back. That means another 7 to 10 games.
shoulda put him on LTIR and banked some cap space

Tom Wilson has a fractured sinus bone in his cheek. He will wear full face protection for about 4 weeks and is unlikely to miss any games.
Backy skated with OV this morning.

Yesterday Ted Leonsis said OV will be out another 2-3 weeks, as there is no rush to get him back. That means another 7 to 10 games.
shoulda put him on LTIR and banked some cap space
My understanding is that LTIR doesn't work that way. LTIR gives you an exemption to exceed the cap by the day-to-day amount of salary of the player or players who are on LTIR. The player on LTIR does NOT get subtracted from the team's salary cap numbers. But the day that someone comes off LTIR, the team's salaries, including the newly instated player, MUST conform to the cap. No banking of space so you can continue to keep going over once the player returns. Now, the break that teams get is that LTIR/exemption rules hold only for the duration of the regular season. So if a player takes all season off and then returns for the playoffs, he and any players who replaced him can all participate in the playoffs, even if they exceed the [regular season] salary cap.
-
That sounds accurate, but my understanding is its also a daily average that gets added up.
Im not aware of the playoff loophole being fixed, but I know its been discussed.
-
At some point the Caps are going to lose a road game.
I'm figuring it might be Dallas - for whatever reason we don't have a successful history vs Dallas. We did beat them in our barn earlier this season...3rd game of the year.

Last year a lot of us were wondering why Protas got the early extension that he did, at over $3 million cap hit. I'll admit, I was one of them.
Well, now we know. The confidence with which he has been playing since being elevated in the lineup is astounding, and he looks to be one of those players who seems to make other players better by what he does. He's turned into a great passer, and he provides huge screens in front.
I would only comment that his brother Ilya, who the Caps drafted this year, is having a great season in Juniors. Even at age 18, he is almost as big as his brother.
-
I mean, if they can get Lapierre going, it'll be a Forward prospect trifecta! Proty and McMike have totally surprised me. I didn't think either had it in em' to be top line caliber talent, but they're proving a lot of us wrong! Strome as well. Figured he'd struggle mightily as the 1c.
-

I agree, Mick. When Carbery elevated Protas to the first line, my first reaction was "huh?" I never would have thought that an Ovechkin/Strome/Protas line would work, but Protas' skating has improved so much that he and Strome can apparently carry transition both ways on that line. And Protas' screens were a big help to Ovie in the early going.
And I figured that McMichael's best chance at being a really worthwhile NHL player was at 3C. But it seems as though he really belongs on the wing.
-
Protas has turned into an extremely effective player on the forecheck with that long reach. What I really like seeing is he is getting more aggressive on taking shots as he did for the game-winner the other night. He is on pace for 20+ goals.
I think Caps management is really high on his little brother as they traded up to get him in the draft. I would not be surprised to see him on the team next year.
I'm hoping that Lappy can continue to develop. I think he in on the bubble right now but they seem to have him ahead of Vrana who I kind of feel bad for. Vrana actually was playing fairly well and I would like to see him on an NHL team.
-
I agree. I liked Strome from day one but figured him for at best a mild 2C. He has always been a good passer and playmaker, but his scoring touch has improved as well his board work, etc - pretty much all aspects of his game are better. He is producing at a much higher level than I ever expected.
McMike....Outstanding improvement in this guy..I was about ready to let the ship sail on him (although, we forget how young he is), but damn the difference in this year vs last year is crazy. He's faster
Protus...WTH - we all that that contract was insane, but now its a bargain. Just wish he'd use that body a little to go thru people instead of around them. (I recall Carbs commenting on this early last year...trying to get him to utilize his size more to his advantage) I didn't figure him for having the scoring touch, but he (like McMike) went on some kind of skating clinic over the summer and it has improved his game everywhere.
Dubois has been a pleasant surprise as well. I heard nothing but bad press on him....lazy, not working, not good teammate, etc. He has been nothing but Mr hustle in nearly every game. I honestly can't recall a game where I was down on him or had anything negative to say. Certainly the contract is too high, but the Caps didn't issue that contract, and took it partly in exchange for dumping Kuemper's $6m contract. Surely would like Dubois to put more in the net, but his all around play has been excellent.
So...easy to say when you are winning, but I think Carbs might be the real deal. He has somehow gotten improved play from nearly all players on the ice this season. His credit or just a fluke? I think he for sure has something to do with the Caps success this season.
Lets keep on rollin baby....
-
Yes, PLD has been great in a lot of ways and I just keep eating crow every game because I hated that move. He could easily have 6 or 7 more goals and then we would really be raving about him. I bet he finishes with 20 to 25 goals.
We are all loving Chickryn but I think we need to give some props to Sandin. He is really playing well and is playing with confidence. He still makes a boneheaded play every now and then but overall he has been great.

I found this site today, it looks better than what else is available for free..

What a fantastic site! Good job Alta 8)
NOW some of that make sense to me.
How bizarre that Thompson gets paid less than most of the AHLers. Reckon he's due a pretty hefty bonus. :uh-huh:
-
Watched end of Oilers/Panthers last night. Crazy.
Oilers down 2-1 after one, scored 3 goals in second to go up 4-2, then allowed one late in second to make it 4-3
Panthers score 2 in third to go up 5-4, Oilers tie it like 90 seconds later only to drop 1 more with about 7 minutes left.
Panthers win 6-5
Reinhart scored the 5th Panther goal (about 7 min into 3rd) by going down wing and below the goal line and shooting from about 2' behind the goal line and hit Skinner in the back of the head and bounced in. He had almost zero to shoot at, from where he shot it.
What I noticed was how similar Skinner plays to Lindgren...goes down to early (IMO) and plays low and squatted down too much.

So after watching the game against LA, I was trying to figure out who my favorite Cap is right now. Protas, McMike, PLD? Maybe Chychrin? Willy? I could probably name a few more. That's nice!
Also, I was thinking that I bet we see the Protas brothers in Caps uniforms for a long time, maybe together starting next year.
-
Speaking of next year, that could get pretty exciting as we could see a few nice prospects work into the mix. There could be several surprises including Leonard making the jump and a couple others including a couple on defense. Leonard was just named Captain of the USA team for the World Juniors and Andrew Cristall is continuing to score like crazy in the WHL - but he may be a couple years away.
Anyway, so much for a long down period!

Ovechkin did not travel with the team to Boston.

Rybinski was sent back to Hershey at the conclusion of the Boston game. One more player needs to go for OV and Eller to both come back, and both are on the trip to Toronto.
-
We better get back to the heavy forechecking that was working so well before. This 15-18 shots on goal won't cut it at all.
-
OV is in, no Eller. And Matthews is out, again.

Sucks for Lapierre, but he regressed from last season, and Eller is a really known quantity at 3C. When guys go back to the minors after a significant period with the big club, things can go one of two ways. They can sulk and sometimes lose focus, or they can work to get back, and maybe dominate in the minors because they've been playing at a higher level of competition. I have to believe that Hershey will insert Lapierre as a top-6 center, tell him to drive play and be ready to be the first forward back when injury or some other circumstance necessitates a callus.
-
Weve not heard about Milano either. If it were up to me, hed go to Hershey for a conditioning stint when he comes off LTIR. But that is limited to 10 days if I recall. After that someone else is going to need to go, and Id be tempted to waive Milano.
-
Yea, love Milano, but we're not really missing his services this season. Not sure what happens if you waive and nobody grabs him? He's taking up almost 2m in salary cap.
-
If a player clears waivers, he goes to the AHL team. I forget what his paycheck does.

I thought it was interesting that Carbery's comments after the Bruins game focused on how the team gutted out the win even though they aren't playing with the crispness and confidence they did earlier in the season. He spoke about it with the calm detachment that suggests that everyone in the organization understands and acknowledges that this is currently the case, but no one is casting blame about it. It's a long season, and teams have ups and downs in their quality of play. They are simply going to try to keep working to fix things.
Our political leadership could learn a lot from Coach Carbery.

The season is now officially half over for the Caps. They are 1st in the East/Metro with 58 points and 2nd in the league, they have a game in hand over Winnipeg.
-
I was gonna say before the Rags game.....The Caps next stretch of 6 games is vs all losing or mediocre teams... what a good time to earn some standings points, but that would have been a jinx so i didn't...
and then we go and lose to Buffalo and steal a win from Vancouver.
I did hear Joe B saying the next two games are back to back and and games 2, 3 in 4 nights for the Caps - both opponents will have 3 days rest. Fn schedule is just wonky for the Caps
And Montreal is hot right now - winning 8 of last 10.
Go Caps

boredom thread...(just saying)
some surprising (to me) stats for you
Protas plus 24 is tied for second best +/- in entire NHL (Eichel +27, McNabb +24)
Darcy Keumper 4th best GAA avg in the league (.920)
Dowd leads the Caps in PIMs with 40 (Willy has 38)
Ovi leads the Caps in P/GP (pts per game) with 1.20 (13th in NHL)
Protus is 4th in league with even strength goals with 17 (and 8th in even strength points)
Protus just turned 24 on Jan 6, McMike turns 24 on Jan 23rd, Sandin is 24, Fever is 25, (all these guys are playing top 6/ top 4 minutes) Miro is only 20...turns 21 in Feb.
Ovi was drafted the year Miro was born and started with the Caps in 2005...when Miro was 1 :snicker:
-
Miro needs to take a step. I know he's very young, but 1 goal in 18 games (and that was an ENr) isn't at all what he was billed as.
Another bored fact: Only (-) players on the roster currently are Raddish and Eller. Both a -1
-
Not sure how I feel about Raddish. He has mainly been not noticeable and maybe that is good. He's steady and does his job, but nothing to get excited about. I would be excited to get Beck Malynstyn back from Buffalo. He has scored 4 goals this year and is signed through next year at a cheap number. He brings the kind of energy and physicality that would be great for the playoffs. I think he would be an improvement over Raddish or Duhaime. Those guys are doing fine and I'm not sure I would want to mess up any team chemistry, but I love Malynstyn.
-
Couple interesting scores from last night..
Islanders shutout Vegas 4-0
Rangers beat Devils in OT 3-2
-
Big news from practice today.. Miroshnichenko was sent to Hershey and Ethen Frank was called up.
-
Anybody else hate the shootout? I've hated it from day one. It's a cheesy gimmick that cheapens the game, IMO. I'd rather play a 7 1/2 or even 10 minute OT and if it's tied at the end, each team gets a point and goes home. Ties are more legitimate than SO wins.
-
I like not having a four column score sheet. I like the idea of 3 on 3 in trying to shorten OT. I dislike the resulting product. Ive never really had an issue with the SO, other than losing. Some of the better shootouts in my opinion is when they go 10-12 frames and we get to see guys that never wouldve gotten a chance otherwise. The current issue is the coach picking the wrong first 3 shooters. Granted we dont have Oshie and Kuzy anymore, but there are much better options on the team than OV and Carlson.
-
They get my vote to nix the shootout. Play 3 on 3 until someone scores, or until the clock ends and go home with a point each. 10 minutes sounds about right.
-
10 minute OT of 3v3 would likely eliminate the need for a shootout, and likely take less time than an OT and SO.
-

-
i don't care for the shootout. Im down for 10 minute OT then a tie
Carbs had quite a bit to say about the shootout lineup after the game...they know it sucks, they are testing people out cuz they just dont have the locked in shooters.
He said basically...for YEARS the SO was set...Oshie, Kuzy, then Backy or Ovi. Three of those guys are gone, and Ovi sucks at it and Carbs said so.
He says PLD actually has a very good record in SO so he got the nod last couple games. Strome you would think is good but his SO stats are pretty bad. Same for McMike...he has the kind of skillset youd want but his percentage is not that great so....
they still figuring it out.
He did say with no clear cut SO guys...they do look for someone who is hot (hence Chicklets getting couple shots) and also that they intentionally shy away from guys currently slumping (so as not to frustrate them further).

Hunter Shepherd has been called up from Hershey, Lindgren goes on IR.

8-0 I was almost certain he'd flopped, then got called to the dark room because of it. Truely expected him back before the game ended.. Oh well, those big bodies and goal posts hurt I guess! Hope he heals quickly!
-
Tonight, at least, after beating Nashville the Caps are..
1st in the metro
1st in the east
1st in the league
61 points ties them with Winnipeg but Caps have a game in hand
mid season slump and all
-
Thompson making a strong case to be the #1. Thompson is also a UFA after this season.
-
Yup, gonna have to pony up 5 or 6 x 5 to keep him.
Wonder how many teams in the league are left, w/o a shutout? We're 1 of them.
-
They are really rolling the dice this year and it paid off, but will make it hard to keep these guys. If we only had Ovi's or Carlson's money coming off next year. If you had your choice and could only sign one, who would you pick - Chychrin or LT?
-
Chychi.
-
Yup, gonna have to pony up 5 or 6 x 5 to keep him.
Wonder how many teams in the league are left, w/o a shutout? We're 1 of them.
Three teams are left without a shutout at this point: The Blackhawks, who are 30th out of 32 teams in average goals allowed per game; the Pens, who are dead last in average goals allowed; and us - who are 5th in the league in average goals allowed. An anomaly, to be sure.
-
I'm going to the game Tuesday....vs Ducks.
Two of my broke sons bought us hockey tickets as my Christmas present. They searched the cheapest seats they could find...so we got a Tuesday night vs Ducks. Seats are upper level 400's, like WAY up in the corner. Should be interesting...haven't sat up there in a couple decades. Hope my old ass can make the climb and handle the altitude. :snicker:

I would do my absolute damndest to keep both.
However, if forced, I would have to go with the Cat.. He's developing quite nicely and has certainly made his case for starting goalie, imho. He may not have a shutout so far this season, but his stats are actually pretty good.If there is one position a team needs, more than any other it's the goalie. You can have an amazing team in front of him, but if you have a sieve in net, you 'ain't winning nothing!

Coach line shuffle continues.
https://twitter.com/sammisilber/status/1878834526769782992
-
Im not surprised Thompson gets the start tomorrow with the two days since the last game. Looking at the schedule for next three weeks Id expect it to be Thompson - Shepard - Thompson, rinse and repeat.
-
18,17 & 15 shots on goal the last three games and they somehow won two of them. That can't continue. We need to figure out how to get back to spending much more time in the offensive zone. I don't know the stats on puck possession but we have to be on the minus side over the last month or so. It seems like we don't have it too much.
As for Ovie, no non-empty net goals in four games and not really noticeable out there lately. He's also -2 since his return.
-
When hitting the goal post counts as a shot on goal, I will put more weight on that stat. Generally speaking.
-
Bored facts:
If you open Twitter (X) on the right side of the screen is "trending" and at least on mine it shows the days sports matchups for teams you follow.. So, today (being bored) I clicked the Capitals at Senators link at 4:30pm. Just adding up the number of threads about each team, the Caps have 10 threads. Senators 28. lol Caps "PR" sucks man.. Looks nasty, but did he actually catch him in the neck/head? looks like he caught some shoulder, but hard to tell in this video. It was dumb and definitely a penalty.
My question is why was there not a whistle well before this?. McDavid was holding/being held down, then they reversed and the guy tackles McDavid who is getting away. That's interference, holding, etc. WTF were the refs looking at? Down by a goal with 15 seconds left - you have to blow the whistle and make a call. This non-call impacted (potentially) the outcome of the game. How is this not a penalty on one or both well before the incident? I see why McDavid is frustrated but doesn't warrant the cross check to the head. At least the league is applying the DOPS bs to one of the golden boys of the league as well.
-
So the good news is NO McDavid for the Oilers tonight. They are still a very talented team, and fast.
Like BlackIce said...this week starts a tough road trip. Edmonton, Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottowa. Let's see what the boys can do.
I'd be satisfied with 3-2, but hell let's just roll thru these west coast softies and go 5-0.
-
So a few player reviews:
Mangiopani - I was hoping for more out of him and I think he has played poorly these last few games. I'm worried that he is going to get himself in the mix of potential scratch players.
Raddysh - he is playing ok and not noticeable most nights. Maybe that is a good thing. He doesn't need to be much of a scorer and maybe he has a more defensive role, but he has a big body that I wish he would use more. Maybe that will be a big help in the playoffs.
PLD - I just love this guy and its good to see him get a few goals lately and I actually saw him really smile last night.
Alexeyev - I feel sorry for him. He is just wasting a year with riding the bench. I don't know why they can start getting him in a game or two every now and then and give some of the other D a break. I know you don't want to mess with the chemistry but let's play him a little!
-
Amen on Alexeyev, Beagle. This use/non-use of him stands in stark contrast to how Carbery has been able to work other young players into more prominent roles in the lineup.
Of course, Lapierre and Miroshnichenko are on the outside looking in as well - but they each got more of a chance than Alexeyev has, and at least they are playing, at Hershey. I think Alexeyev has a one-way contract now, so he can't be waived without exposing him.
IF the Caps make moves at the trade deadline, I wouldn't be surprised if Alexeyev is a trade piece.
-
Ive been of the opinion that far too many statistics are being tracked in the NHL. It started with CORSI, which was highly flawed, to all the garbage being tracked now. I think its an attempt to better predict outcomes like the way stats are used in baseball. But I dont think it works nearly as well with hockey. And, it is more for the gambling market than for the teams.
-
Im convinced gambling is the #1 motivator for college/pro sports these days.
-
They could move Mangi. I don't have a problem with him; he works hard and has some touch, but $5+mil for a fourth liner is a bit much. He's on a 1=year deal so i could see someone wanting him for a possible playoff run...but we could keep him for the same reason...and i would expect to get peanuts for him so...
Aleyev could fetch some return though. I'd love to see him get in some games...FFS rest TVR or Carlson...they old fucks.
What about moving TVR and keeping Alexeyev? TVR is FA next year. Wait...its not next...its the year after.
TVR has been pretty steady last couple seasons, but I swear he's about 1/4 step away from constantly being just totally suspect most of the time. I'm not down on him, but he worries me...I'm always expecting him to play badly for some reason
I'd really like to find a way to keep Chicklets, but man he's gonna get paid next year...prob 8mil per at this point - the seasons he's having
You have Roy and Sundin wrapped for 4-5 more years. Need to get Fever on a contract too - year after next.
At this point I'd rather take a shot on Alexeyev for the next 3-4 years than TVR.
-
Mick..
Do you watch any of the Daytona 24 hours? I dont recall them banging on each other like that before. It wasnt much different than short track racing at times.
It bothers me that the 4 days of events before the 500 is still called speed weeks. The 24 hours used to be the start of speed weeks with events happening near daily until the 500 two weeks later. Now, events for the 500 start 2 1/2 weeks after the 24hr with nothing in between. At least bike week is still two weeks after the 500.
-
Rich - totally agree on TVR. He scares me every time he has the puck and although he has been steady for the most part, every once in a while he has a horrible game where he makes tons of mistakes - bad clears and dumb passes.
I don't think they will trade TVR. He has been their guy and they chose to resign him over other guys. I doubt they would trade Alexyev either as since nobody has seen him play much this year, they would be lucky to get a 3rd rounder for him and I think they would keep him for depth in the playoffs in case somebody gets hurt. I still don't understand why they don't give him a game every 4 or 5 games.
-

I watched a few minutes of it. Didn't see any beating/banging? Like you said, when it used to be the start the speedweeks and also had some big names in the race, I used to watch pretty much all of it. But these days it's boring to me. Wanted to see the end but lost track of time and missed it. Did Penske win again? Usually does.

true...didnt think about nobody knows what Alexeyev can do really, so hard to get value for him. I think they SHOULD hang on to him...what IF they can't resign Chicklets...then we truly short a D to go along with two very aging D on the roster.

Hopefully Wes Johnson will continue to recover and eventually be able to return to work.
I noticed the GoFundMe page and am pleased for him that over $170,000 has already been donated. But as coldhearted as it may seem for me to ask this, why does he need a GoFundMe page? As a Caps employee, doesn't he have good health insurance? Why is he piling up medical bills, and doesn't he have leave or something to cover for his period that he might be away from his duties with the organization? This just struck me as ..... odd.

So the 4 Nations debacle is starting next week and our guys will get some rest. The interesting thing will be to see what trades go down during the tournament. I'm still hoping the Caps don't do anything.
My two guys that I was thinking that we could upgrade were Mangiopani and Raddysh - but they have both been playing well. I'm a little fearful that Mangiopani will be effective in the playoffs because it will be much more physical, but he doesn't back down and gets in the middle of stuff. Raddysh could be a real surprise in the playoffs as I think he has another gear to his skating and he is a big body that could ramp it up if he wants to.
Anybody want to see any moves?

I'm a little fearful that Mangiopani will be effective in the playoffs because it will be much more physical, but he doesn't back down and gets in the middle of stuff. Raddysh could be a real surprise in the playoffs as I think he has another gear to his skating and he is a big body that could ramp it up if he wants to.
Anybody want to see any moves?
Nope.
We're doing quite alright as we are, thank you very much. :P

It's difficult to justify any moves at this point, because who are you going to sit? ANY move might mess with clubhouse harmony, which seems high right now. BUT we have to face the fact that if other teams upgrade/shore up weak points and we just stay as is, the playoff calculus may well change.
There is another issue that hovers, now coming into the foreground: The two-week break. Yes, the Caps get to rest, but so does everybody else (except the guys playing, of course). And there is another issue to deal with -- rust. I will 100% guarantee that, coming out of this break, a lot of teams will resume playing essentially as they were before -- but there will be certain teams who will catch fire, relatively speaking, coming out of the break, and certain teams whose play will deteriorate. And that will be the subject for analysis as the regular season ends and the playoffs begin. Where will the Caps fall on this spectrum? Nobody knows.

this annual 12:30 game is horse shit

I'm worried....
not sure where we gonna find enough mysterious poop facts to carry thru 12 day lay off
-
Got some Nascar stuff to watch starting Wednesday night - Sunday night.. :raspberry:
-
I will say one thing about the game. The Redskins defense doesnt look so bad now.
-
It's amazing how pedestrian the Chiefs looked without getting -every- benefit of the doubt call. But the Eagles are really good, when healthy. The front 4 on the D line dominated that game. I was thinking they may get "MVP" but of course the NFL gave it to Hurts.
*Redskins D is bad. lol They have so little actual talent it's amazing what they achieved this year. Hopefully they can build on it in the draft/free agency (and not fuck it up) for next year. :cross:
-
Who are the Redskins :raspberry:
-
Don't start with me Hillbilly!! :raised-eyebrow:
-
Did you know Redskins poop is burgundy and gold :raspberry:
-
The parrotfish eats coral and poops sand. Something to think about the next time you are on a tropical beach.
-
The 500 has been moved up 1 hour on Sunday. Trying to get the race in before the forecasted rain.
-
It's crazy, it's not rained (measurably) down here in 2 or 3 months. Longer than that since we had a thunderstorm. Soon as Nascar shows up.. Rain. :-\
-
Long term forecast here has 8 of snow about Thursday.
-
It was 89* here yesterday. No humidity. :snicker:
* Holy shit, I saw a forecast model for you guys, late next week, that said up to 20+ inches in DC? Is that real?? 8-0 I lived though a few big snow storms up there in my 27 years, but don't remember anything close to 20 inches...
-
Do we know anybody who's playing in the Four Natiions thingammy? I know none of our guys are.

I've lived in the DC area for almost 55 years now. In my time here I think we've had 4 snows of 18" or above. I saw there was supposed to be snow this coming Wed./Thurs., but I haven't seen any estimates of total. I'm retired and can hibernate in our 7th floor condo, so who cares?

Team USA and Team Canadia, tonight at 8pm local

them damn Chebys got lucky two races in a row

Im having a hard time finding a reliable model right now. But some of these models had us getting feet of snow a month ago when the total was 8. 20 plus would be a top ten storm. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

and the U.S. team beat Canadia 3-1.

I was thinking the 4 Nations tournament was going to be lousy, but boy have I been surprised. The hockey is excellent and is at playoff or better quality - with intensity and hitting! The skill levels are unbelievable and it is amazing how well they are playing together without having practiced. I was bitter about no Caps being included but decided to watch anyway and I'm glad I did.
-
I really had no interest in this 4 nations thing either. I was bored last night and decided to watch, it was a good game. Im gonna have to watch the next Team USA game.
-
Great game last night. That is what hockey is supposed to look like. It makes you realize what insipid games we get for much of the regular season. It was also a demonstration of how physical play can change a game. The US decided to hit McDavid every time he was near the puck after he scored and he wasn't much of a factor the rest of the game. It's a lesson the Caps could take to heart going forward. I'm thinking Canada will regret not choosing Thompson to play goal.
-
I watched a few minutes of a game the other night. Canada vs somebody. Looked like an allstar game roster. Didn't watch long enough to determine how good/bad they were playing, but every name they mentioned was recognizable. Im just not a big enough fan, outside of Washington, to care.
Im with these two.. They said fuck it, we're going to Florida! :snicker:

Plural? Love is the only Cheby I know of that's won this week. Kligerman got DQ'd in the truck.

Wayne - that is exactly what I was thinking. Our regular season games have gotten pretty average and boring. Very little intensity or physicality, but I guess when you play 82 games a year of a super difficult sport, that is what you get.
The other thing that stood out from this game was the quality of skating and the speed. Those guys are all-star caliber because they can flat out skate circles around the average players. Most of us were complaining about Willy being left off the team, but he would have been left in the dust and relegated to standing near the net and trying to hit a guy occasionally. It would have been interesting to see Protas play in that game though.
-
what happened to rain tires and windshield wipers..
:raised-eyebrow:
-
Thats three races that cheby crashed into the victory circle.
-
Damn, 13th to 1st.. Love it. ::) lol Custer took out all the JGR cars.
Still not sure who these 3 Chevy's are? 150's, CTS, ARCA, Xfinity, Cup: Pontiac, Ford, Toyota, Toyota, Chevy, Chevy.
-
Excuuuse me. The truck race was won by a Toyota because of a late wreck that took out the top ford drivers. The same way cheby won the bush and cup race.
I would have been fine if Hamlin won the 500.
-
Team USA vs Finland tonight at 8pm.
-
I felt same - zero interest in the 4-nations tourney. I did watch first 2 periods of the USA first game and then watched the entire USA vs Canada game. Wow - what a level of play, and man Canada and US really don't like each other. Three fights in the first 13 seconds is crazy.
Looked like the Tkachuk boys came to play in this tourney for sure.
Im hoping Canada wins today (1pm) and we get a rematch for the final with USA vs Canada. Although it hardly seems right USA could go 3-0-0 and be far ahead of everyone then possibly lose in the final to a Canada team that could get to the final with a 0-2-1 record.
But any game other than USA/Canada in the final will be a let down.
Oh, and yes, all these MFr's can skate like the wind. It's crazy how fast the play is basically the entire game. USA seems to be better and limiting oppositions chances, and FFS Hellebuck in goal is incredible. No wonder Winnipeg has such a good record.
Go USA!
-
Canadia beat Sweden today. That means Team USA and Canadian play again for the ribbon, or whatever the prize is in this four nations thing.
Thursday, USA vs Canada at 8pm in Boston. Home crowd advantage.
-

Truck was won by a Toyota because Nascar DQ'd Kligerman (Chevy) after the race for being too low. (I'd of been fine with all Cheby wins, other than the 500) I only stomach Toyota's because of JGR. Would never buy one. :P
-
Team USA vs Canada Thursday night at 8pm.
NHL teams are holding official practices today. No one plays until Saturday.
Caps vs Hens at 3pm Saturday.
-
After 12 days off.....Caps play Hens 3pm Saturday and then Oilers 1pm Sunday. Who exactly in the NHL offices hates the Caps franchise?
back to back games in different cities 22 hours apart? I realize Shittsburgh to DC is like an hour long flight, but its still travel and FFS why a back to back right away?
-
Very excited about the game tonight. It's going to be tough for the US as Canada has Makar back and the US has some injuries. Should be good!
The downside is that when we watch regular hockey on Saturday, they are going to look so slow.....
-
In my opinion, the speed of these games is playoff hockey. Not regular season hockey. I dont think any of these guys could sustain this over an entire season.
-
Welp, Ive finally saw McDavid do something to warrant this reputation he has as a great hockey player.
-
Yes, McJesus finally scored, but he had a ho-hum game overall. The US outplayed them all night. Binnington had been just OK the whole tournament, but he won them the game in the third period and OT. I didn't really care who won that much, it was just great hockey to watch. Much better than an all-star game.
-
Terrible game by Adam Fox in the 4 Nations final. He was out of position on the tying goal and wandering off into the corner leaving the whole slot open for McDavid on the winner.
-
In my opinion, the speed of these games is playoff hockey. Not regular season hockey. I dont think any of these guys could sustain this over an entire season.
The speed and hitting exceeded most playoff games, too. The regular season is slow motion compared to these games.
-
A few things happened in todays game vs the Oilers..
OV gets his 882nd goal, 13 more to pass Gretzgy
OV is the first player to score 200+ goals in three different decades
OV is now tied with Jagr for most game winning goals at 135
OV is tied at 5th with Phil Esposito for most hat tricks at 32, Gretzgy had 50
OV is 2nd with multi goal games at 178, Gretzgy had 189
and OV has now scored on a record 181 different goalies
I also saw that this is the 20th team OV has scored a hat trick on, but Ive not yet seen those records. I would think thats close to or more than Gretzgy by the nature of the scheduling these days compared to when Gretzgy played.
-
and the Hens lost to the Rags today
-
I'd rather see the Pens get in the playoffs than the Rags. I just can't stand Laviolette and can't wait for him to get canned.
-
So a couple of guys stood out for me yesterday - and not who you think.
Mangiopanie. I have been thinking he is the one guy I would dump at the deadline, but he plays with heart. He goes to the net and mixes it up with guys that are way bigger than him and he is pretty effective. He's not afraid to go in the corners either. It would be nice if he scored more, but he is a keeper.
Raddysh. He is a big body guy that just stays under the radar but plays a solid game. He seems to have a little edge to him every now and then and I loved how he came back and plastered that guy coming up the boards yesterday. I think he is going to be good in the playoffs when we need more physicality.
-
Meanwhile, just to keep everyone up to date, Protas' younger brother Ilya is actually accelerating his production at Windsor of the OHL. He's now at just about 2 points per game after collecting 8 points in his last two games. And this is his age 18 season - he has another season to go in juniors. I know people are optimistic about Leonard and Cristall, but this guy looks like the real deal. The guy looks like a steal as a 3rd round pick.
-
So when is the earliest age he could play in the NHL? I mean why can't the Caps catch lightening in a bottle?
-
Wow but wow...Caps seemed ready to play this weekend.
Caps are 14pts ahead of Carolina & NJ with 25 games to go in the season.
The 15 goals this weekend, pushed the Caps to highest scoring team in the NHL as well as 1st place overall.
Man o man, who would have thought this when the season started?
The GM and front office look like geniuses; every single guy they brought in is working (lets not talk about Vranna)
Carberry looks like THE only candidate for Jack Adams award.
Goaltending is fantastic, goal scoring is phenomenal, speed is up, D is ...well decent.
I think the only thing we are lacking is some MORE physical play. Hoping Raddysh snarls it up a notch for playoffs although he has never played in a playoff game. Maybe PLD has some more snarl in him for the playoffs as well. Chicklets has got size too, but he's played maybe a handful of playoff hockey being on the Coyotes. (I looked it up - he's been to the playoffs 1 year, played 9 games)
We have team with some very seasoned vets, but also some guys who have little or no playoff experience.
Not counting any chickens yet, but this team is something else so far this season.
-
So when is the earliest age he could play in the NHL? I mean why can't the Caps catch lightening in a bottle?
So far as I know, he could play in the NHL next season if the Caps wanted him to. But I don't think they will; they tend to not rush prospects. And besides, IF Ovie plays next year, let Ilya in the Juniors. Then make a decision about him in the 2026/2027 season, when presumably Ovie will no longer be in the NHL. Ilya is stated to be a LW.

bunch of cork suckers want a specific goal on national broadcast, screwing the team fans out of their preferred broadcasters
and moving the April 12 game from 7pm to 12:30 is horse shit
-
Yup. It'll be a crime against humanity if JoeB doesn't get to call "the goals" that tie and break the record..
At least 2 of those 3 have Monumental or Monumental2 for you guys. But they're still gonna fuck everyone who's not local. I can never find a local feed when it's a national tv + monumental game.
-
the last time the Caps scored 15 goals in two game was 2003, pre Ovechkin
-
Fuck em. Ovi will do it at home April 13. Joe B will get the call :)
Pick your date and Place your bets now!
-
So Ovi has not played great this year - right? He has definitely slowed down and is often a liability on defense. I think his hand-eye coordination has slipped as well as he has whiffed or shanked a lot of shots this year that he normally would nail. And yet, here he is with 30 goals. Just incredible. Plus, if he hits the shots he normally does and if he doesn't miss the games due to injury, he would probably be looking at a 50+ goal season.
-
(looks at the clock)
:raised-eyebrow:
The Caps have a 10 point lead on 2nd place Toronto in the east. Winnipeg has won 11 in a row and has a 3 point lead over the Caps for the presidents trophy race.

Milano started skating with the team in a non contact sweater.
-
Be interesting to know what actually happened to Milano. IIRC he took a check, played a shift or two after, then next game was gone to IR? Been out a LONG time..
-
Before todays game vs Tampa, Alexeyev was sent to Hershey for a conditioning loan. Could be he just needs to get some game speed in, could be a move to make room for Milano. But, a conditioning loan is only good for 10 days.
-

Yea, I dont think there was any one play that identified what his injury was.

COTA was one of the better road races Nascar has put on in quite a while! Was hoping Busch could pull it out, but better tires got him.
-
The only reason I turned it on was because its COTA. I will say the shorter lap was a good idea for these cars. But, as usual, I didnt see the end of the race because I wanted to eat dinner at a decent hour. I had to turn if off with 25 laps remaining. Fuck nascrap and these 3:00 pm starts. Why even bother if I cant see the end. 80% of the population of this country lives east of Houston, and, Id bet 80% of nascrap fans live east of the Mississippi. That means the east and central time zones. Yet nascrap refuses to use lube when they bend their fans over.
and, the only other race Im inclined to watch this year, the 600, is fucking stream only
fuck em, Im done
-
and, the only other race Im inclined to watch this year, the 600, is fucking stream only

Curious what they fit for him.

Caps would have to drop 18 pts in the final 18 games to have a shot at missing the playoffs
Actually rich, I think it's less than that. In order to miss the playoffs, 8 teams would have to pass the Caps (or equal them in points and benefit from tiebreakers). The 8th team, whether it is the Rangers (currently 9th in the conference) or someone else, has to be a team that will have no more than 68 points after 64 games. Such a team, even if they won out, could accumulate no more than 68 + 36 = 104 points. So the Caps, who currently have 92 standings points, need only 13 more points to get to 105 and shut out the 8th team. They could drop 23 out of their remaining 36 points in 18 games and still make the playoffs.
-
Stop all this jinx talk! You've watched the Caps for long enough to know this is entirely possible. :raised-eyebrow:

The on screen program guide said the Australian F1 was supposed to be on FS2, at the same time nascar was on FS1. I would have watched the F1 race, but the program guide lied.
-
I don't even watch F1 anymore. But I "think" it was on earlier than the Cup race, like this morning?
Cup race was ok.. Good to see The Wood Bros back in VL with Josh Berry. A "real" win too, not a lucky plate track win like Harrison Burton had in the car last year. Top 3 was something no one saw coming. Berry, Suarez, Preese. 8-0 JGR is becoming irrelevant.. If Bell hits a slump, they're gonna be like mid 2000's Roush Racing.. :-( Think Bell was 12th today. Briscoe 17th and Ty and Denny like back in the 20's.. Think they all had pit issues, but there cars were slow all day.
-
Im sure F1 was on a tape delay, being on the other side of the world. I did catch the end of Moto GP, from Australia. They are supposed to be in Austin next weekend.
-
I'd definitely watch a MotoGP race if I saw it on! Marc Marquez!! I remember when he first came on the scene.. Bad mofo!! Is he still competitive? I used to watch pretty religiously.. Back when they had that bad crash that killed a rider? He wrecked then I believe got run over and decapitated.. (not physically, but medically) Crazy shit. Those guys are complete nuts racing those bikes!

-
Caps need 6 more standings pts to guarantee a playoff birth.
There. I said it.
Prepare for the sky falling
Hmm .... I have it at 3 standings points. The bottom 2 teams in the Metro are already eliminated from catching the Caps. The Rangers can accumulate no more than 98 standings points, so their next loss, even after regulation, or the Caps' next point eliminates them from catching the Caps. Columbus and NYI have a max of 100 standings points, so the Caps can eliminate each of them from catching them with any combination of the Caps getting 3 more points/they lose out on 3 points. Once the Caps make sure those 3 teams can't catch them, they are guaranteed a top 3 spot in the Metro, which gets them in the playoffs.
Montreal can still accumulate 103 standings points as the 5th team from the other Division, but it is actually easier for the Caps to clinch top 3 in the Metro than it is for them to clinch one of the top 8 standings points spots.
After tonight, a tough stretch coming up - FLA to finish the homestead, then WIN/MINN on the road.
-
You right BlackIce...i was only looking at total pts for Montreal...
(don't tell Mick...that'd take us to a 3-4 game losing streak)
-
It looks like right now if the season ending we would be playing Ottawa - which is that last team I want them to start with. Ottawa has played us really tough and they got better at the trade deadline. I know that bit about "it doesn't matter - you have to play them sooner or later" - but I don't want the Caps to get knocked out in the first round. I would much rather play the Rags, or even the Devils.

agreed. I wouldn't want to really play Florida either, but yeah Ottawa seems to have our number this year
wouldn't we draw the 8th seed.... Montreal?

Beagle, I'm confused. By my reckoning, it would take an extremely specific and unlikely set of circumstances for us to start the playoffs with Ottawa. Others can correct me if I'm wrong.
If both Divisions in the conference send 4 teams to the playoffs, then the first two playoff rounds are interdivisional, as I understand it. So the only way that the Caps could ever play Ottawa is if both won the first two rounds and met in the Conference finals. If the Metro sends 5 teams to the playoffs, the lowest team would cross over to play the Atlantic Division champ. That isn't going to involve the Caps. If the Atlantic sends 5 teams to the playoffs, the lowest team would cross over the play the Metro winner, which is the Caps at this point. So Ottawa COULD play the Caps in the first round if Montreal passed them, but Ottawa still finished well enough to be the 5th Atlantic Division team to qualify, and the Caps ended up winning the Metro.
The Caps could avoid Ottawa by letting Carolina pass them!!
-
Each division sends the top three teams of record. The two wildcard slots are the best of whats left in the conference, for a total of eight teams per conference.
3 top teams from the Metro division
3 top teams from the Atlantic
2 top teams from the rest of the Eastern conference
same for the Western
-
Beagle, I'm confused. By my reckoning, it would take an extremely specific and unlikely set of circumstances for us to start the playoffs with Ottawa. Others can correct me if I'm wrong.

The Caps played Florida in Round 1 in 2022 even though both divisions had 4 teams make the playoffs and the two WC teams were from different divisions. (WSH, BOS). I think the #1 will play the #8 no matter what. Joe Beninatti was talking about the Caps possibly playing Detroit the other night.
-
I got the Ottawa matchup from some website and it didn't make sense to me either - so my bad on trusting a dumb website. There is always discussion of the seeding process and how about letting the top 2 teams in each division choose who they play in the first round. Now that would create some controversy!

8-0 Im surprised there aren't more serious cuts during the season. Shit's scary. Hope he feels ok to go, but should be only a week or so either way.

The Devils lost last night, giving the Caps home ice in round 1.
This morning, the Caps are the only team to have clinched a playoff spot, and they start with home ice. Winnipeg hasnt clinched yet.

Caps are gonna have a cap problem next season..

that about a $4.5M a year raise
-
Chychrun for 8 x $9 million - seems about right. I am kinda surprised he didn't go to free agency. With the cap going up, I think he could have gotten more. Not bad for the Caps.
-
Being happy with the organization and teammates usually trumps going after top dollar. Thats still a pretty good raise, with job security.

We have a cap problem every year. Jus sayin. :P
-
Hot Damn. I applaud this move with Chicklets. He is 26. 8 years is 34, so this gives us a pretty premier D man for the future. Glad they didn't let this get to Free Agency. Love that the guy scores, but he really does play both ends of the ice well.
His wrist is hurting from signing that BIG contract, not a skate cut :snicker:
NOW can we trade TVR? How about Carlson? :P
-
Caps have 3.3 in cap space currently. Chicky is a +4.5m compared to this year, so all else being even you need to free up 1.2m next year and the Cap is going up, so i don't think it will be terrible.
Backy and Oshie come off next year (although they had no cap impact this year really).
I expect the Caps will let Mangi walk at 5.8m...thats alot of cap space right there.. let Mangi walk, pop Milano back (1.9m) in and you still have 2.5 or so in Cap space next year without an increase in cap.
Mangi, Dowd, Raddysh, Eller & Beauvillier are all FA next year. If you sign all but Mangi, I think you still have some cap space left.
We shall see.
-
Based on what Ive read, next seasons cap should increase by about $8M. It was frozen for three years because of the wuhan flu. The last two seasons had a low cap increase because the league had to prepay some loan they took out, also because of the wuhan flu.

Well hell, with that extra $8m you could sign everyone you have now and have some left over. Not that you want to be up against the cap (like the Caps historically are)
I like Mangipanne's play and he's feisty and has some good skill but he's undersized and he not worth 5.8m IMO. I think there are better options at 5.8...like getting a real D man in here.
Caps need to decide if they want Dowd, Raddysh, Eller, Mangi back next year. For the cost, i'd bring them all back except Mangi. Caps could use an upgrade at 3c though.
-
I don't really understand your issue with Eller. I really like the guy and he's a perect fit for us.
Unless we have some stud coming up from the farm, I would leave him alone.
I agree we need to maybe look at our D.
-
Winnipeg clinched a playoff spot last night. Chicago and San Jose are the only two officially eliminated. Most teams have about 10-11 games remaining.
-

I agree we need to maybe look at our D.
I've always liked Eller, but he has dropped off on scoring the last 20 games or so. He seems to make plays and he should be scoring more, but he does fine in his role.
-
I like Eller. Always have. I thought he was a great pickup for almost nothing. He hustles and plays big.
I just said we could use an upgrade...like a Center who actually scores now and then. 10 goals, 11 assists in 69 games aint great production from a 3c. Thats 26 pts over an 82 game season. I'd like closer to 40pts from my 3c. His offensive production is more like a 4C than a 3C.
Now it varies greatly depending on the matchups and assignments he's getting, but PLD is getting most of the top line match ups vs other teams so...
Put it this way...Of all the Caps players (who have played regularly), Only TVR (20pts) and Duhaime (18pts) have less points than Eller (21pts) this season.
But...we did gain a 2nd round pick when we traded him away in 2023, only to spend a 3rd and 5th round pick to get him back. Not sure how you calculate the math value there, but i think it might be a net loss on picks
I liked the pickup - always liked him, but really would like a little more scoring from him (see attached pic for why he can't score more)
-
I like Eller too. I assumed he was resigned this year primarily for his faceoff skill, not scoring. But at 35 that too is falling off.

Guess they have plans for BigMac in Washington?!?! Hope we get to see him on ice sometime soon!
Lil will be happy Torts got canned, again. :snicker:
-
I was hoping Laviolette would get the same career boost this season. But the Rags are suddenly fighting for a wildcard spot.
-
So would you sign Eller next year? He's a UFA. When we picked him up and after 1st couple weeks he really stabilized the 3rd line which had been terrible before his arrival, and I thought, hell yeah, get him for 1 more year. Now I'm like...meh..im good either way. I like him but he is slowing down and he was never a scoring dynamo and don't expect him to be.
But he is a known entity that won a cup with us and meshes well with the team is well liked. That's hard to quantify - you just don't know when guys will click with each other or not. Caps hit the jackpot on that this season - literally every piece they brought in is working.
-
Not sure I'd resign him and Dowd. Dowd makes 1.3 and earns every penny. Lars makes 2.5 Dowd will probably get a raise. Maybe if you do both for 4m total? But I'd look for an upgrade at 3c if possible. I like Lars but he's lost a step. He's solid, but should probably be 4c.

Ah, but sometimes you have decisions to make and have to decide when to hang on and when to move on .....
Dowd is a year younger than Eller, which isn't a huge deal in isolation, but Dowd will turn 35 in May, and Eller 36. Not everyone can play effectively to upwards of age 40; Ovie's year this year is the exception that proves the rule. Even if you want to sign both of them, do you want to sign them to more than a 1-year deal at this point? I sort of agree with Mick here; I think Dowd is still great for the 4th line center/PK work he is slotted for. Eller at this point in his career doesn't really fit what the Caps need, especially longer-term. I thought maybe McMichael would be that guy, but he has now solidified himself into a top-6 wing role. And I wasn't sure exactly where Protas was going to fit, but I thought it was going to be somewhere in the bottom 6 as well, until he exploded this year.
It just goes to show that you never can be sure how things are going to develop. 12-18 months ago I was "sure" that with Ovie's departure, Kuzy's implosion, and Backstrom/Oshie reaching the end, the Caps were going to have to tank, have a complete rebuild, and reconstruct almost their entire top 6. Now, things look completely the reverse, and what we don't see on the horizon are the bottom 6 players.
Which makes the Caps' anticipated pick in the upcoming draft, at least in the mid-high 20's, just fine. Let the teams above them pick all the potential game-breaking forwards and pp defensemen. I'd think the Caps in the first round would be going for less scoring potential but a big, solid, either playmaking center or defensive defenseman, which they should be able to get one of the best of, if teams above them are chasing glamour.
-
I agree that we have to evolve and look to the future, however I don't see any viable upgrades to Dowd or Eller at this moment in time. Certainly not within our cap space. I would re-sign them both to one or two years and then look primarily to the farm.
It's our D that needs tinkering with. imho and that's where our priorities should be, regarding upgrades. Breaking out of our own zone has been an issue. There are two, maybe three Dmen that I would be okay replacing. I would like to see a little more of McIllrath.
A lot will depend on how we do in the playoffs.
-
I'd agree sign Dowd to a one year and maybe Eller, but what if they want 3 years? That's a no for me. If they get to FA and someone offered them 3 years at 1.5m per, they'd have to grab it I would think.
Come summer there will be plenty of FA's out there - guys like Eller and Dowd are a dime a dozen. I'm not knocking either one, and I like them both, and not advocating for them to be pushed out, but replacements for 34d/4th line guys are easier to come by. The Caps need is a guy who can win face offs - that's a weak spot on this team. Actually I looked it up and as a team we are 50.3% on the season, which is better than I expected.
Strome 54.3% , PLD 49.1%, Dowd 49.8, Eller 52.6% Honestly, I am surprised by this - thought our FO stat was much worse.
Dowd made the league minimum with the Kings for 3 years after his 1 year entry level contract. Then he signed 1 year deal with the caps at league minimum, followed by a 3 year deal at league min, then his current 3 year deal at 1.3m per. He has family here so I expect he wants to stay, but it would be hard to turn down a bigger offer elsewhere based on his "modest" career earnings.
Eller might be harder to nail down his value. He's has been a good all around player and good utility guy anywhere in lineup, mostly slotted at 3c, but he is aging - has certainly lost a step. Not sure I'd offer him more than a 1 year deal.
I do think the Caps will sign Dowd before he becomes a FA. Maybe 2 years at 1.25 or something. He has been a good fit here I think
while we are at it...Raddysh will be an FA also. He makes 1m this year which is bargain - I'd go up to 3 years on him for similar figure. He's not a great scorer, but he's shown some potential here and there and he's only 27, and he HITS people. Same goes for Beuvy - although he doesnt have great size. Wow...didnt realize he had made 4.15m/yr over a 3 year deal with the Islanders prior to his 1 year 1.25m deal with Shittsburgh.
Mangipanne, Eller, Dowd, Raddysh, and Beuvillier are our only FA's. I don't see how the Caps could/would choose to afford Mangi; 5.8 is crazy number for him. The other four I could take or leave.
BTW...Ethan Frank has been a healthy scratch since Beauvillier arrived.
-
Rich - Beauvillier SEEMS like a similar player to Frank, but he will probably provide more points per game, and he is much more of a physical player despite his lack of size. Much better suited for the playoffs.
Which brings us to Ryan Leonard. Thee Caps are widely expected to sign him and MAYBE bring him into the lineup after his college season is over. A lot of his appeal is that he plays with intensity and an edge, in addition to being a scorer. The frozen four is sort of screwy, though. If Leonard's team wins their game tomorrow, they advance to the final four - which isn't played until April 10/12!! I'm wondering if the Caps aren't secretly hoping that he loses tomorrow. The difference between playing in the final four vs. not is two weeks, during which the Caps play 7 games. I would think that there is an ENORMOUS different between Leonard having up to 9 games to acclimate himself to the NHL vs. having no more than 2 games before the playoffs start.
-
does the active roster size increase for playoffs? Can you carry more guys on the roster? I know the cap doesn't apply.
-
Im pretty sure the roster does increase in the postseason, based on what teams have done in previous seasons, and there isnt a new CBA for another year that would effect that.
-
I think Eller will be gone. It's a shame that Dowd hasn't been paid better. He has given the Caps more effort on a consistent basis than anybody. He's not a top talent, but he deserves to be paid more.
I hope they keep Radysh for the same reasons - solid and can be physical. I think we are really going to appreciate him the playoffs.
I think everyone is expecting Leonard to make the team next year which would be nice, but that is not a certainty by any means. Even if his team loses and they got him on the roster earlier, I doubt that he would see any playing time in the playoffs.
Don't forget that we still have Lappy and Miro, as well as Frank and maybe Lappy has a resurgence like McMike did this year.
-

-
Well, now we'll find out what the Caps' plan is for Leonard.
-
The kid looks amazing against other college kids. The NHL is a different world entirely, and during the playoffs is not where Id put him in for his debut.
-
He's not seeing ice in the playoffs. Not unless we have (at least) 2 injuries to wingers.. But there's 9 games left. Perfect time to get him, Frank and Big Mac some ice. Team looks like shit lately anyway.
-
Well, that didn't take long. Leonard is signed (of course, given the restrictions on entry level contracts, there isn't much to negotiate.)
Now we'll see what happens next.
It's hard to believe he'll see ice time right away. He won't even have time to practice before the Caps' next two back-to-back games.
-
I know he tore it up in college, but I don't expect to see him in a Caps sweater until next year's rookie camp. But....WTF do I know?
I didn't realize he was that big...6'-0 200lbs...not a giant, but pretty thick for a 20 year old.
So the article states "he ends his collegiate career with..." Does that mean he is committed to NOT returning to BC for his junior/Senior years?
I know he has signed a "pro" deal, but does that require absolutely he is done in college?
-
Excellent! I'm going the game in Boston tomorrow night and hopefully they put him in the lineup. Never been there so it should be fun, although I am disappointed that I can't boo the Rat.
-
The interwebs says a team can call up from the the minors a max of four additional players after the trade deadline until the end of the season, but still must remain under the salary cap. So, would Lenard technically have to be signed to Hershey first? Or South Carolina because of his age?
According to these people, the Caps currently have $3.3M of cap space..
https://capwages.com/teams/washington_capitals (https://capwages.com/teams/washington_capitals)
-
OK, so according to Alta, the Caps have plenty of room to add Leonard. I hate to say it, but if they have to keep the active roster at 23 for right now, Ethan Frank will probably be sent down.
Now here's what I don't know/understand about contracts, and the answer could be a big clue as to their plans for him. He signed a "standard" 3-year entry contract for what I think is the maximum amount allowed for that type of contract. BUT, when does the contract begin? Is the remainder of this (2024/2025) season count as the first year, which means the contract runs for only two more seasons after this one (I guess??), or does the contract begin in the 2025/2026 season? If the contract begins next season, then the organization doesn't have his services for the remainder of this season. But if it begins right now, as I presume is the case, why would the organization do that if they weren't planning on making use of him now?
The Caps also signed another player today, a 7th round draft choice who certainly is not in their immediate plans. I wonder if there is a difference between his contract and Leonard's?
EDIT: I just looked at the signing announcements for Leonard and the 7th round pick, Dave Gucciardi. Gucciardi's announcement said a two year contract, starting NEXT season. Leonard's contract was stated to be a 3-years contract, with no stipulation as to when it starts. I assume it starts immediately, which may be the organization's way of kowtowing to him by calling it a 3-year contract, but it's over after 2 more full seasons.

Ha!! Great GIF, Rey!
I would note that the Caps official website added Leonard to the roster this morning. If the guy is playing any more this season, it won't be at Hershey.
-
Yep, and according to this article The "Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery revealed pregame that Leonard will start his Caps career on a line with Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas. The top-six assignment will see Taylor Raddysh, a bottom-six winger, come out of the lineup as a healthy scratch.
I think giving him an opportunity to play inside our top six was objective [number] one, Carbery said. Objective two give him a couple of linemates that can help him through situations. So, whether thats a communication standpoint or Pro being a really smart, intelligent, in-the-right-spot type of player. I think those are characteristics that can help a young player thats playing his first NHL game.

-
Well, color me astounded.
Maybe this is being done because his friends, teammates, and family will be around to watch. But really, throwing him into the lineup with only a morning skate to prepare, on a top line, only a couple days' removed from college hockey, with things still at stake for the team in the regular season, shows one of two things: Either (1) they think he is some kind of exceptional hockey player, to be given this type of responsibility right out of the gate; or (2) Since he is the highest draft pick the team has had in the last couple of decades, they simply want to show him a kind of deference, at least initially, "due" someone of his draft status.
-
McIlrath is also in tonight. Roy did not travel with the team for personal reasons. Usually that means someones wife is giving birth.
-
In his pregame interview with Leonard today, Mike Vogel made a comment to him about the rigors of playing back-to-backs, 3 games in 4 nights, etc. That gives the impression that the team is going to stick him in the lineup and keep him there unless/until circumstances (injury, performance issues, whatever) intervene. Then Mick's thoughts come to the fore. IF the team is going to treat him as a lineup mainstay until something changes, do we really assume he won't be in the lineup during the playoffs??
-
Wow. Shocked as well. But Leonard IS an exceptional talent. I mean he did at BC what nobody has done in the NCAA since Johhny Gudreau, so...
Caps don't really need the standings points but they need to change the momentum for sure... they've been warm doo-doo for a while and Carbs said after the last game they needed to move some guys around to get a spark. I also thought it funny...a reporter specifically asked Carbs the other day if he watched the college games or if he had talked to Leonard and Carbs said he had...literally the night his college season ended, so that was probably telling.
Not making a direct comparison except as to age, but Ovie played at 20, Backy at age 19, and Willy at age 18, All three were 1st round pics.
SO...I went and looked at Caps 1st round pics...going back in order. There are many - okay MOST that played by age 20, but damn I bet most had at least had 1 practice with the team first ;D
Caps last 15 or so 1st round pics and their NHL debut age:
Leonard 20
Miro 19
Lappy 19
McMike 20
Alexeyev 22
Lucas Johansen 24
Ilya Samsonov 20
Jakub Vrana 18
Andre Burakovsky 19 (season opener)
Filip Forsberg (OUCH...every time i hear his name....) 18
Wilson 18 (game 5 playoffs vs Rags)
Kuzy 21 (season opener)
Mojo 19 (season opener)
Anton Gustafsson (never)
John Carlson 19
Karl Alzner 20
Nic Backstrom 19
Semyon Varlomov 22
Leonard was the #8 pick overall in the 1st round; the lowest pick for Caps since Alzner #5 and Backy #4. (had no idea Alzner was a #4 overall 1st rounder)
Ovie, was the #1 overal pick in 2004 and made his NHL debut in 2005 at age 20

-
I presume that Ovie was out there at the end of the game to try to get an ENG with the Caps still comfortably ahead in the Conference. Otherwise, he has NO business being out there in the final stages of a 1-goal game. He coughed up the puck along the boards trying to squeeze it out of the zone when he could have just trapped it against the wall and eaten up the last several seconds. Quicker players can eat up that type of move if they see it coming. His mistake caused Lindgren to have to make a big save in the last couple of seconds.
I would be extraordinarily surprised to see Ovie on the ice in the same situation during the playoffs.
-
Zero chance Ovi is on the ice at the end of playoff games if we're protecting a lead.
-
It's a shame that Ovie has to be out there trying to get empty netters. When one considers that he missed his whole rookie season and half of 2012-13 and half of 2020-21 because of issues beyond his control, he missed a potential 153 games. At his career scoring pace that's another 92 goals which would mean he'd be closing in on 1,000 now instead of 900. In fact, he might even have more because he was scoring at a .68 GPG clip over those two half seasons vs his career average of .60.
-
Announced April 1 by the NHL, the April 6 game vs the Islanders is a national broadcast on TNT, but, will also be broadcast on Monumental with our normal announcers. Of course this has NOT been announced by anyone in the Caps organization because their PR sucks ass.
Also of note, the April 10 game at home vs Carolina appears to be stream only..
because Buttman hates the Caps and their fans.

So I went to the game last night in Boston and sat about 10 rows behind the bench. I had forgotten how fast the game was in person. A few takeaways:
Leonard can skate much better than I expected and has really good speed and quickness. He didn't seem intimidated at all and looks to have high-level skills. He is going to need to be careful with his skating though and not get himself in vulnerable positions. In terms of his size, he was not as big as I thought and hopefully he will still grow an inch or two and bulk up a bit. Overall, I thought he was really impressive and I think it is likely he makes the team next year (after just seeing him this one game!).
Tom Wilson is just an incredible beast when he is skating at top speeds and when he is buzzing around. He just stands out way more when you watch him in person than he does on TV. I mean he REALLY stands out and it is clear the other team respects him and fears him.
-
I liked Leno's game as well. And also noticed he didn't quite look 6' 200#.. Hopefully they can bulk him up!
And why (did I read on Facebook) that Shepard is starting tonight? Something wrong with Thompson? * may be fake news, can't find any actual story on the X and can't re-find the story on fakebook.

I liked Leno's game as well. And also noticed he didn't quite look 6' 200#.. Hopefully they can bulk him up!

Post practice presser coach said same lineup and Logan will start. Im guessing he meant Thompson. Logan Thompson.

Yea, I edited my post. Ya can't trust anything on fakebook anymore. Almost all the sports threads are bull :poop: ...

I also just checked the Hershey Bears website. Theyve got 8 games left in the season as well. All the guys youd expect are listed on the roster. The second a guy gets called up from Hershey they take them off the roster, they have guys running the website that care about their job.
I did check the injury report first though, nothing new was posted.

I'm not sure I like Radysh coming out - but who else could they sit? Leonard plays right wing, so it would have to be Radysh or Duhaime. I would swap out Mangiopani, but he plays left wing.

On the bright side, OV needs 3 goals in 7 games to set a new record. And, the Caps have already clinched a playoff spot.
