8-0 Im surprised there aren't more serious cuts during the season. Shit's scary. Hope he feels ok to go, but should be only a week or so either way.

The Devils lost last night, giving the Caps home ice in round 1.

This morning, the Caps are the only team to have clinched a playoff spot, and they start with home ice. Winnipeg hasn’t clinched yet.

Chychrun for 8 x $9 million - seems about right.  I am kinda surprised he didn't go to free agency. With the cap going up, I think he could have gotten more.  Not bad for the Caps.

Being happy with the organization and teammates usually trumps going after top dollar. That’s still a pretty good raise, with job security.

Hot Damn.  I applaud this move with Chicklets.  He is 26.  8 years is 34, so this gives us a pretty premier D man for the future.  Glad they didn't let this get to Free Agency.  Love that the guy scores, but he really does play both ends of the ice well.

His wrist is hurting from signing that BIG contract, not a skate cut :snicker:

NOW can we trade TVR?  How about Carlson?   :P

Caps have 3.3 in cap space currently.  Chicky is a +4.5m compared to this year, so all else being even you need to free up 1.2m next year and the Cap is going up, so i don't think it will be terrible.
Backy and Oshie come off next year (although they had no cap impact this year really).

I expect the Caps will let Mangi walk at 5.8m...thats alot of cap space right there..  let Mangi walk, pop Milano back (1.9m) in and you still have 2.5 or so in Cap space next year without an increase in cap.
Mangi, Dowd, Raddysh, Eller & Beauvillier are all FA next year.  If you sign all but Mangi, I think you still have some cap space left.

We shall see.

Based on what I’ve read, next season’s cap should increase by about $8M. It was frozen for three years because of the wuhan flu. The last two seasons had a low cap increase because the league had to prepay some loan they took out, also because of the wuhan flu.

Well hell, with that extra $8m you could sign everyone you have now and have some left over.  Not that you want to be up against the cap (like the Caps historically are)
I like Mangipanne's play and he's feisty and has some good skill but he's undersized and he not worth 5.8m IMO.  I think there are better options at 5.8...like getting a real D man in here.
Caps need to decide if they want Dowd, Raddysh, Eller, Mangi back next year.  For the cost, i'd bring them all back except Mangi.  Caps could use an upgrade at 3c though.

I don't really understand your issue with Eller.      I really like the guy and he's a perect fit for us.
Unless we have some stud coming up from the farm, I would leave him alone.

I agree we need to maybe look at our D.

Winnipeg clinched a playoff spot last night. Chicago and San Jose are the only two officially eliminated. Most teams have about 10-11 games remaining.

I've always liked Eller, but he has dropped off on scoring the last 20 games or so. He seems to make plays and he should be scoring more, but he does fine in his role.

I like Eller.  Always have.  I thought he was a great pickup for almost nothing. He hustles and plays big.

I just said we could use an upgrade...like a Center who actually scores now and then.  10 goals, 11 assists in 69 games aint great production from a 3c.  Thats 26 pts over an 82 game season.  I'd like closer to 40pts from my 3c.  His offensive production is more like a 4C than a 3C.
Now it varies greatly depending on the matchups and assignments he's getting, but PLD is getting most of the top line match ups vs other teams so...

Put it this way...Of all the Caps players (who have played regularly), Only TVR (20pts) and Duhaime (18pts) have less points than Eller (21pts) this season.

But...we did gain a 2nd round pick when we traded him away in 2023, only to spend a 3rd and 5th round pick to get him back.  Not sure how you calculate the math value there, but i think it might be a net loss on picks

I liked the pickup - always liked him, but really would like a little more scoring from him  (see attached pic for why he can't score more)

I like Eller too. I assumed he was resigned this year primarily for his faceoff skill, not scoring. But at 35 that too is falling off.

I was hoping Laviolette would get the same career boost this season. But the Rags are suddenly fighting for a wildcard spot.

So would you sign Eller next year?  He's a UFA.  When we picked him up and after 1st couple weeks he really stabilized the 3rd line which had been terrible before his arrival, and I thought, hell yeah, get him for 1 more year.  Now I'm like...meh..im good either way.  I like him but he is slowing down and he was never a scoring dynamo and don't expect him to be.
But he is a known entity that won a cup with us and meshes well with the team is well liked.  That's hard to quantify - you just don't know when guys will click with each other or not.  Caps hit the jackpot on that this season - literally every piece they brought in is working.
