Apparently the Caps players had Sunday off, because zero news comes out from this team when the players have a day off.

Wilson is being evaluated today, just to make sure nothing is broken. It did seem like that was a lot swelling for not breaking anything. OV skated again this morning before practice in full gear. Still is a no contact jersey.

Willy got the day off?  I knew he was fucking soft  :raspberry:

But for real...his face looks cartoonish.  Don't know how he didn't loose any teeth on that.
A bit surprised they didn't remove him from game for concussion worries.

Dude is one bad hombre - great time for him to step up, team needed it...that's your next team Captain right there.

Yesterday Ted Leonsis said OV will be out another 2-3 weeks, as there is no rush to get him back. That means another 7 to 10 games.

shoulda put him on LTIR and banked some cap space

Tom Wilson has a fractured sinus bone in his cheek. He will wear full face protection for about 4 weeks and is unlikely to miss any games.

Backy skated with OV this morning.

My understanding is that LTIR doesn't work that way.  LTIR gives you an exemption to exceed the cap by the day-to-day amount of salary of the player or players who are on LTIR.  The player on LTIR does NOT get subtracted from the team's salary cap numbers.  But the day that someone comes off LTIR, the team's salaries, including the newly instated player, MUST conform to the cap.  No banking of space so you can continue to keep going over once the player returns.  Now, the break that teams get is that LTIR/exemption rules hold only for the duration of the regular season.  So if a player takes all season off and then returns for the playoffs, he and any players who replaced him can all participate in the playoffs, even if they exceed the [regular season] salary cap.

That sounds accurate, but my understanding is it’s also a daily average that gets added up.

I’m not aware of the playoff loophole being fixed, but I know it’s been discussed.

At some point the Caps are going to lose a road game.
I'm figuring it might be Dallas - for whatever reason we don't have a successful history vs Dallas.  We did beat them in our barn earlier this season...3rd game of the year.

I'll play along, like Alta. I think it'll be either Dallas, Chicago, or Boston. Possibly Toronto or Detroit.  ::) :snicker:

Last year a lot of us were wondering why Protas got the early extension that he did, at over $3 million cap hit.  I'll admit, I was one of them.

Well, now we know.  The confidence with which he has been playing since being elevated in the lineup is astounding, and he looks to be one of those players who seems to make other players better by what he does.  He's turned into a great passer, and he provides huge screens in front.

I would only comment that his brother Ilya, who the Caps drafted this year, is having a great season in Juniors.  Even at age 18, he is almost as big as his brother.

I mean, if they can get Lapierre going, it'll be a Forward prospect trifecta! Proty and McMike have totally surprised me. I didn't think either had it in em' to be top line caliber talent, but they're proving a lot of us wrong! Strome as well. Figured he'd struggle mightily as the 1c.

I agree, Mick.  When Carbery elevated Protas to the first line, my first reaction was "huh?"  I never would have thought that an Ovechkin/Strome/Protas line would work, but Protas' skating has improved so much that he and Strome can apparently carry transition both ways on that line.  And Protas' screens were a big help to Ovie in the early going.

And I figured that McMichael's best chance at being a really worthwhile NHL player was at 3C.  But it seems as though he really belongs on the wing.

Protas has turned into an extremely effective player on the forecheck with that long reach.  What I really like seeing is he is getting more aggressive on taking shots as he did for the game-winner the other night.  He is on pace for 20+ goals.

I think Caps management is really high on his little brother as they traded up to get him in the draft.  I would not be surprised to see him on the team next year.

I'm hoping that Lappy can continue to develop.  I think he in on the bubble right now but they seem to have him ahead of Vrana who I kind of feel bad for. Vrana actually was playing fairly well and I would like to see him on an NHL team.

I agree.  I liked Strome from day one but figured him for at best a mild 2C.  He has always been a good passer and playmaker, but his scoring touch has improved as well his board work, etc - pretty much all aspects of his game are better.  He is producing at a much higher level than I ever expected.
McMike....Outstanding improvement in this guy..I was about ready to let the ship sail on him (although, we forget how young he is), but damn the difference in this year vs last year is crazy.  He's faster
Protus...WTH - we all that that contract was insane, but now its a bargain.  Just wish he'd use that body a little to go thru people instead of around them. (I recall Carbs commenting on this early last year...trying to get him to utilize his size more to his advantage)  I didn't figure him for having the scoring touch, but he (like McMike) went on some kind of skating clinic over the summer and it has improved his game everywhere.
Dubois has been a pleasant surprise as well.  I heard nothing but bad press on him....lazy, not working, not good teammate, etc.  He has been nothing but Mr hustle in nearly every game.  I honestly can't recall a game where I was down on him or had anything negative to say.  Certainly the contract is too high, but the Caps didn't issue that contract, and took it partly in exchange for dumping Kuemper's $6m contract.  Surely would like Dubois to put more in the net, but his all around play has been excellent.
So...easy to say when you are winning, but I think Carbs might be the real deal.  He has somehow gotten improved play from nearly all players on the ice this season.  His credit or just a fluke?  I think he for sure has something to do with the Caps success this season.
Lets keep on rollin baby....

Yes, PLD has been great in a lot of ways and I just keep eating crow every game because I hated that move.  He could easily have 6 or 7 more goals and then we would really be raving about him. I bet he finishes with 20 to 25 goals.

We are all loving Chickryn but I think we need to give some props to Sandin.  He is really playing well and is playing with confidence. He still makes a boneheaded play every now and then but overall he has been great.

What a fantastic site!   Good job Alta    8)

NOW some of that make sense to me.

How bizarre that Thompson gets paid less than most of the AHLers.       Reckon he's due a pretty hefty bonus.  :uh-huh:
