There are more than a few things the front office does that make zero sense in any universe.

But, in the same vein I have two Jack Daniel’s bottles that I’ve saved. One label says 150th birthday. The other bottle, which is maybe two years different, says 150th anniversary.

I figured Pacs was gone, kinda surprised NAK was not retained.

Caps management seems to think they need a 28yo left winger for one year at $5.8M. Is someone retiring that we don’t know about?

https://novacapsfans.com/2024/06/27/washington-capitals-acquire-andrew-mangipane-from-calgary-flames-for-colorado-avalanches-2025-second-round-pick/

The ‘24-‘25 salary cap will be $88M. The Caps are currently at $90M according to capfriendly. Ethan Bear was reinstated from player assistance a couple weeks ago at $2M per.

So we give away a 2nd round pick for a guy with one year left on his contract?  We have that deep of a pool of prospects that we can just trade away 2nd round picks for short term rentals?  I saw a comment that maybe they thought they could trade this guy at the deadline - so they can get a 3rd round pick?  Now we have an average winger that will take up a slot that we could have had a young guy in to actually develop prospects.  GMBM has followed up the terrible PLD deal with another clunker.

I think GMBM just looks at the salary and thinks he's getting star players?  :-\  Whatever.. Ovi better not shit the bed. It's gonna be a long few years ahead. Feels like GMBM's past his expiration date.

Maybe he turns out ok.  He went well higher than he was projected, but who knows. There were several players still there like Connelly (who had conduct issues) and Eiserman that seemed to be better prospects, but I'm not an NHL scout.  The Caps drafting has been ok under GMBM, but I think you would have to rate his overall drafting as just average at best.   We need them to get lucky on some 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Yea, his drafting isn't bad. The trading though hasn't been great. Other than Oshie and I guess Strome, he's really not done anything but waste money.

And now this.. I really liked Maly's motor. Not sure what they think they'll improve on with this pick, but..  :cross:

So that idiot just traded Malenstyn to Buffalo for a 2nd round pick!  I loved Malenstyn - high energy, skilled, gave it 100%.  This will be just like the Chandler Stephenson trade.  He finally has a previous late round pick (5th round) that has developed into a really nice player and he trades him.  I'm all for accumulated draft picks, but this was a huge mistake.

I am on the edge of moving on from the Caps.

Panthers have fan vacancy!  lol

Yea, bad trade for the 43rd overall pick. Maly was "developed" and doing great for a 5th rounder.  :-\

AND - with that pick they got,  they draft a smurf defenseman!  Cole Hutson 5' 10" and 159 lbs.  That's what they do - they pick up guys like Sandin and build a core of defenseman that are quick and can skate, but will get steamrolled if we ever get in the playoffs again.

Everyone seems to think it was a steal, great pick. "Offensive D Man".. No mention that he's 5'10. Guess they don't watch the playoffs much.

Now they traded two 3rd round picks for a goalie?  Let's just throw around draft picks because we have such a deep system. What's worse is that they traded with Vegas and I'm convinced that GMBM and GMGM have a sidedeal to strip the Caps to the benefit of Vegas!

Don't we have 2 goalies at Hershey that are supposed to be ready?

That explains why management brought in a left winger with potential issues for too much money.

Fukin idiots.

If TB was willing to deal Sergachev, the Caps should have been trying to get him.  Asleep at the switch as usual.

Malenstyn isn't remotely on Stephenson's level.  Any competent GM could easily replace him.  Unfortunately, our GM looks far from competent.

Exactly.  This guy will be virtually useless when it really matters.  You need big guys who are both mobile and physical.

Wayne - Malenstyn isn't on Stephenson's level now, but remember when we traded Stephenson, he was playing 3rd and 4th line and was not valued by the Caps - who traded him for a 5th round pick!  Ouch!!

Malenstyn should have been up with the Caps at least a year earlier, but Laviolette refused to develop younger players.

There were many nights when Malenstyn was easily one of our top forwards and you could see him improve as he got more confidence. I just hate this trade.

Caps taking lessons from the US Govt on how to spend money.  :-\  Guess that's what he cost, after they gave away the farm for Protus, Sandin, etc.. Hope he lives up.  :cross:

*edit:  Headline is a little misleading. It's actually 2.1 x 2, which is much more realistic!

As of today, the Caps only have $4.8M of cap space left from Backy’s $9.2M LTIR fund. If they bring up Shepard the Caps will only have $4M of breathing room for the season. I cant stand the way team management runs right up against the cap. It has severely hurt them in past seasons. Also as of today, the team has a full roster of 23 players. For someone to get called up a player must be put on IR or sent down.

There’s a bunch of new names this season, more than there should be in any one year IMO.

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/capitals

I wonder how much longer that web site will remain public now that the Caps have bought it.
