2.1 for McMike is pretty decent figure I think.  Plus 2 years give them time to cut and run or sell the farm to keep him in 2 years.

Hate trading Malenstyn for peanuts...and seeing how they didn't want NAK....I figured Malenstyn was a lock.  And wasnt Malenstyn like one of our top hitters despite his lack of ice time?  I don't hate NOT getting NAK back, but Malenstyn seemed to me like a solid 4th liner for reasonable cap.  I guess IF we werent going to sign him, well we got a draft pick..

i see we grabbed a couple reasonably priced wingers from the recycle bin.

Hey what?  we traded Jensen for a 26 year old?  6'-2, 205lbs.  THats seems like an uptrade to me.  Not knocking Jensen, but his age was gonna be an issue

https://www.nhl.com/capitals/news/capitals-acquire-jakob-chychrun-from-the-ottawa-senators

I dont recall seeing this guy much and he played in Ottawa so its not surprising, but his stats look pretty good.  Former 1st rounder, and 26 years old

And yet another?  This guy has both size and apparently skill, but damn...that price tag

https://www.nhl.com/capitals/news/capitals-sign-matt-roy

HTF can the Caps afford this contract?  Did I miss somebody leaving?  Nope...they $4m over the cap even with the Backy relief fund

They have to move another d-man off the roster

Damn...Stephenson signed 7 years with Seattle at $6.25m per.  Yikes!  I liked him bud damn is he worth that kind of money?  Two-time cup winner though.

So we trade Jensen who had 2 years left, plus a third round pick for Chycrun who only has one year left.  I don't mind the trade, but hate throwing away draft picks for short term rentals.  I guess if we are sellers at the trade deadline, we ought to be able to get at least a third for Chyckrun.

The Roy signing baffles me.  You would think that management would be learning the lesson of what happens to 34+ year old players, so this one is going to be a salary cap anchor in the years that we are hopefully rebounding into a contender.

GMBM is showing desperation to stay relevent....

A few thoughts .....

I assume the Roy signing was for the term and price it was because that is the going rate for a defenseman of his calibre on the UFA market.

I'm fascinated by the fact that Protas was given the longer-term, higher-value contract relative to McMichael.  That's a head-scratcher for me.

Our defensive rotation now has 4 LHD:  Fehervary, Chychrun (sp?), Sandin, Alexeyev.  I presume Alexeyev is the 7th D, and he has played both sides, so that makes sense.

Both D acquired are high in blocks and hits.  Wonder if that was a reason why the Caps were after them.  And both are 20-minute guys, with no reason to expect their TOI to decline in the near future.  Maybe this will finally be the year the Caps start to control Carlson's minutes a little more.  They now have legitimate guys to eat these minutes.

With regard to the salary cap squeeze:  I wonder if these moves are a hidden signal that Oshie's physical problems are much worse than acknowledged, and he might well be Backstromed, creating another $5.75 million more of LTIR salary cap exemption.

On paper, and before any injuries, the Caps' lines look pretty well defined; logical defensive pairings can be created; and the goalie situation is pretty clear, unless Lindgren disappoints/Thompson surprises.  Carbery has shown that he won't hesitate to switch there if circumstances dictate.  Whether or not this roster is good enough to make noise in '24/'25 I don't know.  BUT the roster is more logically constructed than I remember it for awhile.  Like the moves or not, I think this is the GM's attempt to give Carbery, who they are clearly impressed with, more tools to work with.

Well, whatever they do I'll root for em'. But anyone who's been a DC sports fan for more than a couple decades has seen the "lets stay relevant" approach. 30+ years and the Redskins have like 2 playoff wins. Last one 20 years ago. Bullets been to playoffs like 9x in 27 years. 1st round exits.  Buckle up.  :'(

I wondered the same thing about the cap....if it signals they know something we don't...about Oshie or someone else.
Also thought maybe they were going to try and move TVR, but the shortage of Right D negates that thought.

And Caps website roster still shows Jensen and neither of the two new d-men

and this website is dragging ass again

The Redskins have an excuse, the head case that owned the team named danny. His best season was his first when he still had a lot of personal from the Cooke era. Danny liked to consider himself a talent scout when he clearly wasn’t.

This Roy contract looks like a Carlson 2.0. A 29 year old D-man for 7 years. At least the money is easier to swallow.

Wayne - Malenstyn isn't on Stephenson's level now, but remember when we traded Stephenson, he was playing 3rd and 4th line and was not valued by the Caps - who traded him for a 5th round pick!  Ouch!!

Malenstyn should have been up with the Caps at least a year earlier, but Laviolette refused to develop younger players.

There were many nights when Malenstyn was easily one of our top forwards and you could see him improve as he got more confidence. I just hate this trade.

I agree that they underutilize guys who then go on to big things elsewhere.  Burakovsky was a prime example.

They really have rarely developed many guys through the system. I would be curious to see where they rank against other teams in the percentage of the roster that is home grown.

They also seem to be staffing Hershey with good minor leaguers that can win a Calder Cup but not many of them get to stick with the big team.  Just saw they resigned Ethan Frank for two years. I don't know why he would resign with this organization since they never call him up.  It has to be depressing for the guys at Hershey that are hoping to make the club and then they go out and sign 5 or 6 guys from the outside.

I wondered the same...Hershey has been very successful, but few of their talent ever amount to much here.  I think part was Lavi was not really a young player kind of coach.  Maybe that changes with Carbs - he appears to be good for the young guys (among other things)
Or is it simply the Hershey guys are just really good AHL players and not quite NHL caliber?
I would expect Frank will get some time this year with the Caps, but we shall see.

Thursday or Friday, (former)GM BMac made comments that suggest trading is done for the summer and barring a major injury this is the squad for ‘24-‘25. 12 forwards, 13 if you count Backy, and 8 Dmen. Currently the Caps have $4M of cap space only because of Backy being out. Hopefully they keep some breathing room there, though they do technically have a roster spot open. Having a roster spot open and cap space lets them call up players from Hershey as needed without rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

Looking at cap friendly, it appears to me that the Caps are $4.1 million OVER the salary cap at the moment, even with Backstrom's LTIR exemption.  That is what makes me think that Oshie is done, and is going on LTIR for the season.  That gives them another $5.75 million of exemption.  Then I wouldn't be surprised if they put Bear on waivers to give themselves a little more room.  Otherwise, something is going to have to give.  Waiving Bear still leaves them with 7 defensemen, and allows them to carry a 13th usable forward, quite possibly LaPierre or Miroshnichenko and still stay within the LTIR-expanded cap limits.
