the problem i see with this "be suck now so we can be great later" scenario is...the Caps are basically mediocre now.  They are not terrible.  I don't think (even without this trade) that they would be in the bottom 10 in the league so the reality of them getting a really top tier draft pick is minimal.

In a fantasy team scenario you could just sell of all your top talent and shit the bed and tank for a few seasons and draft really high...HOPEFULLY. But even then, who knows what the luck of the draft brings you each year.
And...what about commitment to your current players and fans?  Guys like Wilson and Ovi and Carlson and even Strome wouldn't be too happy playing on team that the franchise has just written off.  Plus these guys are really competitive - they WANT to win.

I'm not knocking the rebuild concept, its long overdue, but I think the reality of managing and implementing all of it is much more complicated and challenging than just saying lets do this and that will happen for us.

Plus, there is the commitment that Leonsis made to Ovie that he would field as competitive a team as he could all the while Ovie was here.  I suspect that may have had something to do with taking this flyer - and that's what it is, a flyer - on Dubois.  To me, Dubois feels sort of like a current version of the flyer they took on Mantha.

Plus, there is a new wild card here - Carbery.  It seemed as though he basically drove this team that struggled to be competitive, into the playoffs.  Maybe the organization thinks this guy has the goods to make chicken salad out of chicken s**t, so they might as well give him tools and see what he can make out of it.

One way or another, the Caps needed to add SOME kind of center to the team this year, by trade or UFA.  This is the avenue they decided to take.

The Caps needed a 1/2 center bad, they don’t have one in the system. Drafting for one could take years, and not 1 or 3. Trading for one is the best option within the 7 years left on Dubious contract. I just hope it works out, because it does resemble the Vrana/Mantha trade where both sides lost.

And, Mick still doesn’t know who Florida is playing

They're playin Canada!! And getting their ass kicked again!! lol They look nothing like the team I've been watching since the Rags series. Oilers figured something out or they're just chocking their ass off. 1-0 Oil so far, 4 to go in the 1st.

1-0 Oil after 1. FL with 2 shots on goal to their 11. :raised-eyebrow:

Wow! Canada rules the USA goal was "offside" after ignoring the on ice call and reviewing a non-definitive replay, keeping Canada's lead at 2-0. Aint that somethin!  :snicker:

Game 7 in Miami

2 ENGs allowed with more than 3:00 remaining. Paul Maurice should be fired.

Oilers have outscored Florida 18-5 in the last three games.

Panthers score 1st, look solid, give up a breakaway.. 5th break/oddman -in a row- given up.. You can't blame the goalie on breakaways, but you wanna win a cup, you gotta come up with a stop at some point. Florida looks rattled but gets their grove back to end the period.. 1-1 after 1.

Back and forth in the 2nd. Couple near misses. Fl gets one late, takes a 2-1 lead into the 3rd!

The story the NHL wants Im sure is for the Panthers to get their streak, which extends more than an entire season w/o losing a 3rd period lead, broken in game 7 of the Stanley Cup.  Stay tuned!

It went to overtime, but Hershey wins game 6. Wins back to back Calder Cups.

Wut? You must of only tuned into the last 3-4 minutes, when the Oil were dead tired? They peppered Fl the whole 3rd period. All Fl could do was lose draws and ice the puck.  McJesus and Draisaitl played half the period (they said) and were out of gas at the very end. Panthers choked em' out, the last couple minutes, against the boards.

Congrats to the Panthers.  They played a better game 7....well they played pretty much their game.
Defense wins the Cup (as usual)

Both teams had their chances, but I didn't think it was all that exciting either for a game 7.  I don't mind FLA won a cup, I just wanted to see Canada win one in my adult lifetime.
Florida stifled the best player on the planet for pretty much the entirety of game 7 and quieted Draisaitl for the whole series.

I recorded the game, caught up to live with about 7 minutes left.  With 6 minutes left, my power blinked for a millisecond (literally could hardly tell it went out except the lights blinked) and my DirecTV cut off.  Took 10 minutes to reset and it was over.  I was recording it, but the recording stopped as well.  Fucking DirecTV.  Hate them, always hated them, always will.  We had no wind or storms or anything.  Talked to a buddy at work...exact same thing happened to him.

Great win for Hershey.  How in the hell Todd nelson isn't coaching somewhere in the NHL is a mystery.  I'm glad Hershey had him, but man he is due a shot in the NHL.

Aside from Lappierre, who else do you think is a lock to go from Hershey to the Caps next year?
I assume Shepherd will back up Lindgren and Stevenson takes over Hershey.
I like Hardy Haman Ahktell's size and thought he played pretty well. i know he came up for a cup of coffee this year but don't remember how he did for the Caps.
Miroschnichenko will presumably get a shot at staying in DC but I like the playing time and development he gets at Hershey.

Something bothers me.

The Caps' advertising is making a big deal about the team being 50 years old.  Which means that they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the team's origin.  But actually, they've already played 50 seasons.  The season coming up will be their 51st.  Does anybody remember, did the team mention at all that last season was their 50th in the NHL?  I'd think for a sports franchise, the number of seasons played is more important and compelling than an anniversary day.

But maybe that's just me.
