Johnny Cash Gaudreau signs 7 years $9.75m per with Columbus.

That's a lot of coin for a Leprechaun sized guy.  (although not as much as $9m for a 34 year old center coming of career ending surgery)  :raised-eyebrow:

Didn't they do some same crazy deal with Nash?  how did that end up :)
I don't care about Oates anymore!

Well Shit fire.  I thought we was done.  I am actually pleased with the effort...spending money they aint got and all...
Strome is a nice pickup I think.  WTF are the Caps doing getting a guy under the age of 30?
A 25 year old legit 2C.  Guy was the third pick overall 1st round in 2015.
$3.5m seems awfully cheap for a 1 year deal for a guy with this pedigree.  (ahem....as a reference a 33 year old Eller makes $3.5m)

Strome got to be hungry after playing with Arizona and Chicago.  Good sized fella.  Hope he can win a face off.

That put's the Caps $6+m over the cap.  Backy's not playing till May for certain now (which I am absolutely fine with)

Strome and Connor Brown.  Damn.  Caps went and spent $7.1m on forwards on top of the $7.7, for goalies, and a little spare change on D

Well I sure as hell hope Jensen, Orlov, TVR & Mr Norris all have solid years cause we didn't do much to help our D corps.  (Not worried about Fever)

Caps show Backy, Willy, Hags on LTIR with $17+m in LTIR relief...that's a lot of spare change

But next year....Ooh-Fah....5 UFA forwards + 2 RFA's.  5 UFA D-men + 1 RFA.

And the only one Im -really- concerned about earns 8 million bucks a year. But as long as he successfully feeds Ovi that 1 timer, he's got a gig with the Caps, unfortunately.. Thing is, Ovi stays on the PP for the whole 2 minutes. If Im ANY other D man who could see PP2 minutes, all I do this offseason is practice feeding a cone a 1 timer pass.. Anyone becomes successful at that and Carlson and his huge salary become expendable. Pipe dream, I know, but it IS the offseason.. Where dreamers can dream..

I've been underwhelmed so far and what's with signing 30+ year olds?  Management doesn't seem to have gotten the message that they are NOT in win now mode.  They are in rebuild mode.  They need to be going with youth and letting guys like McMichael, Leason, Protas, Snively, etc. show whether they're bonafide NHL players.  They can't do that in Hershey.  As mentioned, the defense is going to be a BIG problem if they think they're going with the current projected starters.  Kuemper might be hating life by Thanksgiving.

They are scared to send a rebuilding message to Ovi and the other vets. It's all about getting the record for Ovi in the next three years.  They have to recognize that they won't be Cup contenders, but they want to stay decent and keep Ovi happy.  Giving away a 2nd round pick this year for a one-year player was crazy and they are setting themselves up for a big fall over the next few years.

Here's what's going to happen this upcoming season:

Ovi scores 52 goals this year.
Kuzy gets 120 pts this year
Mantha scores 35 goals this year
Dylan Strome has career year and gets 50 assists and 20 goals
Wilson returns mid season and get 25 Goals on the year
Cmac scores 25 goals and 40 assists
Kuemper posts a 2.4 GAA for the season
Carlson is a legit Norris candidate
Backy returns for playoffs and scores the OT winner in game 6 to win the Cup.

All the Cap fans sit back in wonder and awe and enjoy a SC playoff run
and then he woke up....

I don't even know who CMac is, but I like it!

Just a random thought, but our D would be a lot better if we still had Seigenthaler and our salary cap would be in better shape. I hated that deal then and I hate it more now!!

Vtec made $717,000 per in D.C. He now makes $3.5M per in New Jersey.

Cmac is Connor McMichael.

And I agree 100%.  I hated seeing Ziggy go.  I thought that was so dumb.  Could have kept him for cheap and he's big and strong.....something we are lacking.  THEN was the time to move Carlson when his perceived value was so high....and you could have rebuilt some team with his cash - not that they ever would have or ever will.  Knowing the Caps they will probably sign Johhny to another 5 years at 7.5 mill per when his current contract is over in 2026 and he is 36 years old.

But yeah, I thought Seigenthaler was up and coming and had proven himself well.  Hated seeing him go.  I know he was a victim of the cap problem, but wrong victim in my view.

I've often wondered how much Ted is involved.  It is clear that he calls the shots with Ovi, which is fair. Ted hitched his wagon to Ovi and gave him the big long-term deal early on and it definitely paid off. Unfortunately, Ted has extended that long-term loyalty thing to "his" guys.

I think it was pretty obvious that they should not have extended Nicky and definitely not Carlson when they did.  Hockey is a cold hard business, but the Caps just can't make the tough decisions.  When have they ever traded or not extended a key player?  The really good organizations execute in the crunch - when they have to make hard choices.

People can argue and say "ya, but we won a Cup".  I would counter by saying we should have won 2 or 3 with the draft capital we had and the core of talent.  Ironically, the year we won the Cup - it was not with our best team and as Cups often go, it was just the year that we got the bounces, the calls and good goaltending. The teams 2 and three years before that were way better and should have won Cups.

But they didn't.  Did they.
It isn't about having the best team "on paper".  That rarely works in practice.
It's not even about talent, though that helps a tad....   It's about ego's, charachters and personalities and their interactions and not just within the game team environment.  Who mixes with who outside the locker room.  More importantly, who doesn't?

This is where the Coach is so very important.

I think you are right.  It's very much about having the right guys, not necessarily the most talented guys.  I have thought that over the years, besides Ovi and a couple others, that the Caps lacked the type of players that want to win at any cost.  The guys that just have that burning desire.  We had too many guys that maybe had great talent and potential, but that didn't have that fire and will to win no matter what.

I think the Coach can help make sure the team chemistry is good but if he is given a core of players that just don't have the fire, then he has to rely more on luck.

If the Caps had made some bold moves early in the careers of guys like Semin, Green, Carlson and yes, even Nicky, then I think it is likely we would have won another Cup or two.

You're right 'Lily - it's not about having the best team on paper.  Most times it isn't even about having the best team on the ice.  How many President's Cup winners [the "best" team on the ice during the regular season] ended up winning the  Cup?  Not that many.  Hell, how many President's Cups did we win and never made it out of the first or second round?

It is about the intangibles and about the coaching.   Why we went cheap and let Trotz go after bringing us our first Cup still bewilders me.

Caps currently have the second highest Team salary behind only Tampa Bay for the coming season.
Well technically Columbus shot past the Caps with Johnny Gaudreau signing but show 25 roster players and have to cut that to 23 so they will fall back (Caps are $37K less with 3 fewer roster players)

Caps are $6,321,666 over the cap.  Caps DO have $17,166,666 in LTIR cap relief though, so technically to start the season they have $10,845,000 in cap space to "play with".  Although I expect they are done spending.  Curious to see what happens come spring and IF the Caps are contending if they make a move....they WILL have the coin to do so IF Backy has not returned.  It will be unusual for the Caps to actually be able to AFFORD to make a move at the deadline for a change should they actually want to.

Tampa Bay is 7,195,833 over the Cap and have Seabrook on LTIR so puts them at $320,833 over the cap even with the LTIR relief.
Seabrook was done in 2015 and will never play again.  I have no idea why TBL picked up his contract from Chicago. Did they trade and get future assets to pickup the contract tab?  Apparently this was done in July 2021.  Okay so I looked this up and TBL traded Johnson with his $5m cap AND a 2nd round pick to CHI for Seabrook and his 6.875m cap hit - only his is permanently LTIR so it basically cleared 5mil in cap space for the Lightning and Seabrooks actually salary averaged about $5m over the final three seasons.  So even Cash money to TBL, cleared 5m in cap space, but cost them a 2nd round pick.
Also I read it his highly likely that CHI had insurance policy on Seabrook which would transfer to TBL, so the insurance will pay part of that actually salary.
TBL has been in cap trouble for years so I understand why they did it, but kind of expensive to give up a player and a 2nd rounder to get no talent in return.  Sounds like a Cap move not a cap move

And yes....I am bored.

LTIR money right now is just Hags, Backy and Willy? Or am I missing someone?

Hags has all but bluntly said he’s not coming back. Backy is a major IF. Willy is the only one they have to have room for. So, they should still have money enough to make a deal on D, getting rid of an overpriced contract and replacing it with someone that actually plays D.
