I seem to recall someone hating that Carlson contract from day one, and getting called names for it

Carlson is tied for second for highest salary amount Dmen.  He’s making the same as Bret Burns, Hedman, Suter, Karlsomo, D-Buff, Doughty, Ekblad and Weber.   Add to that, he plays with a player who is typically amount the league leaders in goals, and on the PP that with said player who also is typically the league leader in PP goals.

To Macao’s point, he’s the best D we have, but his padded stats ain’t worth 8mil or being mentioned with above names.

I agree. I like Carlson to the extent that he's our "best defensemen" and I like him to the extent that he puts up points, logs minutes, and I like him to the extent that getting rid of him would create a large hole that isn't easy or cheap to fix.

But he's absolutely not worth that price. I'd put him at maybe $6-6.5 million MAX. He's absolutely not worthy of being mentioned with the names above, and he's not worthy of being mentioned as a Norris candidate. He's a guy who we need unless there's a clearly better/cheaper option available, but his contract will handcuff us for a while, ESPECIALLY when we end up paying $8 million a year for his early-mid 30s. Granted, not nearly as bad as the Laich or Erat or even Orpik at $5 million contracts, but we definitely overpaid.

But he's ours for the time being. So here's hoping that he'll actually get better, or at the very fucking least feel like $8 million a year is enough money to bother learning how to feed Ovi on the PP properly...

after watching Carlson extream lack of physicality against the Canes, I hope he breaks something that ends his career. It's the best possible outcome for both parties, Dylan and management

I’d agree, but. . . he’d be an 8mil cap hit until the contracts up

I don’t consider Carlson our best Dman at all, IF, that letter “D” stands for Defense. Lo, and behold, it actually DOES stand for DEFENSE!!
He’s not even close, in defensive skills, as our BEST D man!

Now, putting salaries aside, you can say that amongst ALL of our Dmen, he may be considered the one with the most overall value to the team, but that’s because his contributions to the team, most certainly, come from the other aspects of the game, NOT from his defensive prowess!

I’ll give credit to his entire offensive production, as a whole. He also has a pretty wicked slap shot that I hadn’t noticed so much, in prior years.

It can correctly be said that his O numbers, are higher than they might normally be, because he has the fortune of playing with Ovi, including the PP! He does maintain that role decently enough, (as would many others, if given Carlson’s role). The point being that he does produce adequately in that role! Fair enough.

This is why he has the higher value, for the team, among his fellow Dmen, Let’s not confuse higher value with higher DEFENSIVE SKILL!

Except for a few rare flashes, John Carlson has only TWO positive defensive talents, IMO.
One is in blocked shots, the other is his poke check.  THATS IT!

His puck handling is terrible. His mental awareness and defensive response is VERY slow, at best. He is NOT a hitter, OR a board battler, and is EASILY beaten in a foot race by almost anyone he deals with!

He acts panicky when getting a puck, especially behind the goal line, in our D zone, where there is a chance for us to regain puck possession. However, if he has an opponent closing in on him, he will slap shot the puck away, like you might do on a PK. Problem is, we’re 5 on 5, and he causes an UNNECESSARY ICING call!  Bringing it back of course, to our Dzone for another face off! This is a STAPLE in his repertoire, and he does it ALL the time!! Horrible decision making, due to his slow processing mind, for time and space!

He SUCKS in the crease! At 6’3”, 215lbs, his ass is SOFT with a capital “S”, when in the crease.
He also gets beat, and sometimes, beat bad, one on one, during an opponent breakaway, where he has had plenty of time to cover the guy!

To be fair, he IS willing to lay down his body, in a 2 on 1 situation, so credit there, but SO many times, we’ve seen that when opponents forward, on a breakaway, covered at the blue line by Carlson, and the guy is easily able to get off a QUALITY shot, as if Carlson isn’t even a FACTOR in the issue!! TERRIBLE D skills there!  Often times resulting in a disastrous goal!!

The “too numerous to mention” unnecessary  stretch passes, that Carlson attempts from our D zone, rarely connect with the target, have a high probability of ANOTHER ICING call, and are normally “just another LOSS of possession change”, caused by Carly, that doesn’t get mentioned!

Best DEFENSEman??  Hell frickin NO! Not in any literal interpretation of the essential word, DEFENSE!!

Most valuable to the team, amongst all our D men? MAYBE! I’ll give you that it’s arguable, no problem, but it’s almost impossible to accurately demonstrate the lost offensive potential, as a direct result of the negatives that happen to us, throughout the game, from John Carlson’s ABYSMAL defensive abilities!
There is no accurate statistic to measure that!
Something, that I’m sure #74 is happy about!

Are you sure? The cap space gets opened while he'd be on IR until they figure out he should just retire, just like with Savard in Boston

How it works a bit messy. The Wings are still on the hook for Pavel, Hanks, and Fraznens contract.  Chris Pronger was “traded” to Zona around the time he got inducted to The HOF, we where on the hook for Nylamders contract for a few years after he retired, and there’s plenty of other examples of unable to play/retired players still on the salary cap years after even attending a trading camp or a home game.

But hey, we’re about due for another strike so this  will change again 🤣

I think "on the hook" for still paying the guys and it counting against the cap are two different things when the guy goes on IR permanently,

This is the closet thing to a clear explanation I could find

LTIR is a very complicated aspect of the NHL operations and the vast majority of details are not specified in the CBA.[/size]When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It . . .”

Course it goes on to attempt to explain one of the many bumbles of The Bettman Era

What an absolute scumbag thing to say.
What about traded, and then put out/injured?  That way get something and another team gets the cap it? 🤣🤣🤣

In all seriousness, with The Caps salary mess, and lack of organizational depth, Carlson will certainly need to continue to average over 20min a game for the foreseeable future.  This amount of time will contribute to wear and tear, longer healing, and possibly of major injury.   Why I only joke about him being hurt, not if, but when he gets a big injury . . . we are fucked
