Signs for Game Seven: Do it for Osh. Do it for Kemps.Headline photo: @Capitals
The Washington Capitals’ season will be on the brink Wednesday night. Win Game Seven and the Caps advance to the second round for the fifth consecutive year. Lose and go home; the Caps’ quest to go back-to-back will end two months prematurely. We’ll all be heartbroken.
Undoubtedly, Caps fans, you guys, are going to bring the noise and be a force to be reckoned with throughout the game. You’re going to give the players energy to help them make that one extra play. Capital One Arena is going to be shaking.
But before all that anxiety-ridden, uh, fun happens, we should give the players a little extra motivation during warmups and honor two banged up hockey warriors for their sacrifice. Let’s celebrate the two Caps that were injured down the stretch and cannot play tonight.
Let’s win Game Seven for TJ Oshie and Michal Kempny. Let’s do it for Osh. Let’s do it for Kemps.
Earlier in the season, former Capital Jay Beagle was moved to tears during and after his homecoming game in DC. Beags said in the weeks heading into the game that he loved looking at the signs during warmups, but no one made him any. So we made some printable signs, and you guys made some creative ones of your own. And during warmups that night, you created a powerful visual and an emotional moment where all there was along the glass were Beagle signs.
Tonight is another opportunity.
TJ Oshie was likely lost for the postseason after being boarded by Warren Foegele and breaking his collarbone. That devastating injury robbed the Capitals’ of their second-leading goalscorer and the “heart-and-soul” of their team. Oshie is currently in a sling.
During last year’s championship parade, Oshie was the first guy who started a back-to-back chant. If the Caps are going to do it, they’ll have to do it without him.
In March, Michal Kempny, the 2018 trade deadline hero that stabilize the Capitals defense corps, was lost for the season. Kempny was drug down to the ice awkwardly by Cedric Paquette in an unnecessary play, tearing his left hamstring in the process.
Kempny was sitting on the Capitals bench at practice Tuesday. He’s on crutches.
Beyond cheering, the most powerful things you can do as a fan is to remember and acknowledge. When the Capitals take the ice for Game Seven, they will do so without their full roster. Show TJ Oshie and Michal Kempny you haven’t forgotten about them. Remind the Caps there’s two guys that really want another win.
Show the hockey world that we’re all in this together and we’re the best f*cking fans in hockey.
Let’s have another legendary night in another legendary year.
Let’s go Caps.
