Kempny
« on: Friday March 22, 2019, 11:53:07 AM Eastern »
All Rierden would say today after practice is that we have to be prepared to be without Kempny indefinitely.  He said he wouldn’t give a timetable for his return until more tests were run.

Looks like the Djoos will be turned loose on the topline with Carlson.

I was talking to our usher about Kempny at the Wild game on Friday, and he said that maybe Kempny had knee damage, or maybe he had broken his leg.  The club is being totally mum about this, as they always are.

The importance of today's game cannot be overstated.  If the Caps are going to regain momentum for the last two weeks of the season, they really need to hold serve today.  Regardless of how one feels about the Caps needing to experience success against Tampa, that game is the LEAST important one this week.

Knee makes the most sense.. You'd think a break would have a set time table and really no reason for the mystery.. Slight sprain and maybe he makes it back?  :cross:

Thats gonna be a tough thing to come back from.  Good thing he’s not a big cap hit, and hopefully Lewington or Sleiggy will be ready and signed for next year

looks like Brooks might get one more year before retirement

Both Lewington and Siegenthaler are signed for next year, to 2-way contracts.  They are RFA after next season.

Lewington is a RHD, Siegenetcetc a LHD like Kempny.  Something to keep in mind.

The question now is how this will be handled.

Toddy and our players have shown an enormous amount of dependency on “chemistry” and pairings, tend to go the “insert back up in injured players slot and proceed as normal route”, and sparsingly creating new pairings or going by match up/situation in game.

The result is Juicy playing 17min last game in a bad loss.

How Toddy manages the D is now a big question mark.

(Oh and TBL, I know I’ve said “take out a D as it will cause a massive disruption in ice time, rosters, and systems more than running a forward”,  I wasn’t saying for you to do it against the Caps 😡)

Kempny wasn't particularly impressive this year (none of our D was) but losing him definitely hurts our depth. I feel pretty comfortable with the likes of Carlson, Orlov, Niskanen, Djoos, Jensen, Orpik as our 6 guys (despite how much some of them suck, we could do much worse). But with Kempny in the mix, we'd have either Djoos, Orpik, or someone else on the outside looking in, and that's a pretty good problem to have. Say what you will about some of our guys as #5 or #6 D, but you have to admit everybody is at the very minimum a luxury to have as a #7D.

If we run into more injury troubles, we'd have to dip into Lewington or Siegs, which I'm not sure I feel comfortable with in the playoffs. Regular season? Who gives a shit. Regular season don't matter. We had an invalid as a coach and we still managed 4th in the league. I'm not sweating a scrubby bottom pairing for the regular season next year. But in the playoffs every inch and every advantage counts.
