He always does that with Ovi and it’s a mistake. He wants to get him easy empty net goals - feeding the beast.  At this time of year, that’s not needed, or smart.
I'd prefer our better defensive players out there. Who cares whom scores an empty net goal.

I’m more concerned it’s “line ideology” . . . If the first lines ready there up, then second and so fourth

But yes, with an EN your best defensive and face off players need to be on the ice and running a tight defensive scheme

Damn right. Put 3 centers out there if you have to.

At the point when Ovie played, no way we were going to loose. Although still valid point.

Nice finish.. Not sure what Trotz was thinking with Ovechkin on the ice at the end though.. I mean, cool, he's showing him he believes or whatever? What if he blocks a shot with his hand? Or they score while he's "trying" to play D? Just not sure I see the upside to putting him out there in a situation similar to a PK.. But whatever, we up 1-0.. Yay!!  :raspberry:

Because Ovechkin is better than in the past with playing D.  To get better he needs experience playing D.  As for possible injuries, why play him at all in the third then?  And we aren't a one dimensional team anymore.  If you cover Ovechkin or we lose him to injury we can still score.  Ask Ovechkin, I am sure he would rather contribute.

Orlov and Nisk played more than 25 minutes each, Headman almost 28, next to him McDonagh with almost 23. Headman is used a lot.

Yes, Ovie plays better D, but we still scared! :)

Agreed,  Ovie and the team are accepting playing more of a two-way game.

And it’s about goddamn time after 10 years.

As far as him being in the ice at the end like that . . . Eeehhhhh, it was risky.  Granted it’s better than putting Bura out there.

Let’s not get carried away.  Ovie, hell the whole is hot and playing great, but this is a small sample size of this year and hell the past 10years

I honestly feel Bura is our worst defensive forward. I think Vrana is even better than him. He scares me every time he is on the ice.

It's good to see you here!
The last year we had an incredible team, this year judging by missing people I thought it's be hard even get to playoffs. We tend to judge people by their past and unknown names do not impress, but nothing is frozen, people can do better or worst. And the Caps adjusted. Orlov a few years back was in third pairing and now plays against toughest opponents. Ovie at least more responsible in D. Vrana swing output of one game or too. Trotz makes a few good adjustments. And I guess when you do right things, sometime you get lucky bounces. There will be new challenges and only how the guys respond to them will move them to victories or losses. The Caps make future today and every day.

And yet, in his first game back in awhile, the Capitals brain trust gives Burakovsky 14 minutes TOI.  Apparently for some reason the brain trust is nowhere near as scared of him as you are.

I didn't see the game live last night because we were out with friends (set up awhile back, before the playoff schedule was out.)  But looking at the game summary video, it certainly appears that Tampa had significant defensive coverage issues during the game.  The type of thing that, if it had happened to the Caps, would be criticized up and down by people here as lazy, inattention-to-detail, noncaring play.  The point is that these types of imperfections happen to EVERYONE.  Lulls in the pace of play happen to EVERYONE.

The commentary about Caps games seems to follow a pattern for the most part.  When the Caps are doing well, they're "finally getting it and playing the way they should."  Little or no comment about the shortcomings the opponents might have exhibited.  When the Caps are struggling, it's because of their shortcomings, with little attribution given to what might be outstanding play by the other team.  And there is very little discussion of puck luck, which plays an enormous role in the outcome of hockey games, maybe more than any other single factor.

Last night the Caps' last two goals, the difference in the game as it turned out, both were a direct result of mishits of the puck by Caps shooters, where Vasi was set to take on the original shot but the puck instead drifted into the slot in both cases, to Caps players who were not well covered by the Tampa defense while Vasi scrambled to try to cover the new direction of the threat.  You see mishits all the time on shots where the outcome is that the chance is lost and play goes the other way.  Last night, twice, the mishit puck just happened to slide into an open danger zone.  That is luck, plain and simple.  Now give the Caps players credit for being in front of the net to jump on the opportunities that happened to come their way.  But many times players are there but the puck hits someone's skate and goes in some other direction where players are not, or the mishit goes behind the net instead of into the slot, or the mishit simply slides harmlessly to the goalie, or some other outcome that amounts to nothing.  When that happens the attitude seems to be that instead of not getting a break, the players were, rather, NOT doing the right things.  There are so many times when I have witnessed the Caps trying hard, but the puck is simply not going their way on a particular day.  Not all losses and unfortunate outcomes are because of deficiencies in skill, lazy play, or inattention to detail.

This is true. The mentality could be changed much earlier. We both agree Fedorov should stay longer to teach them what it takes to win it. Also right coaching, commitment to have good D and coherent play. I don't even remember who were Ds in 2010.

So you want Ovi out for PK's in the playoffs, so he can "get better"?? And I agree, I'd of short shifted him in the 3rd as well. I'd of put Wilson on the line where Burt was and let Ovie and Kuzy (and Burt) watch most of the 3rd..

When this team can roll four lines you know it's a good night.
Solid D leads to good offense. I think they have grasped the concept and are showing they can execute.
I think the bolts have figured out that taking penalties against these boys is not a wise move.
Again, thanks to Lars! Stephenson was also a pleasant surprise at pivot.

14 minutes isn't excessive playing time for a guy playing on the 3rd line and getting some pp time. And I don't think all of those 14 minutes were by design. He took 2 or 3 extended shifts where his linemates changed and he didn't.
