Buffalo outplayed the Habs most of the game and all of the third period and OT.  They kinda got screwed out of a goal with an early whistle as well, but their guy did jab at the goalies pads to get the puck going.  Not sure which way I would have called that one, but if I am a Buffalo fan, I am not happy.  I thought it was interesting that they didn't make too big of a deal about it on the TV coverage - and I don't think they talked about it at all on the in between period coverage.  Kinda makes you think the league didn't want the controversy and put the clamps on them.

I saw the replay, but didn't have sound. Was there a whistle or did they use the "was in the act of blowing the whistle"? If there was a whistle, imo, it was a neutral call. If no whistle, then I'd be mad. Either way, quick whistles are a thing, for some reason. Buffalo got that DC Sports curse going on for sure though.

Beags, I agree...on all of it, Buffalo deserved the win, but didn't get it.  I thought it curious also how little attention the paid to the non-goal.  It was a huge deal; like a game altering, series altering deal, and they just swept it under the rug.  I agree the guy jabbed the puck out, but WAS it actually covered?  They never showed any other angle of it.  I think it was a premature whistle, but that happens, and the puck definitely went in after the whistle.  I figured they would pull the ole "he was in the process of blowing the whistle", etc, but it was def after the whistle, so there is not much to be done, even if the whistle was premature.  I did here them say you can allow a goal after the whistle if it is continuation of the puck moving in, but when touched by another player then NO.
But beyond that, I feel 100% they have reduced the review and discussion on questionable or downright bad calls.  Half the time there is a mystery call, they go to commercial and come back and do not show replays...its sucks.  THen the talking heads just glaze right by it.  I think there is an intentional effort being made to do this...not trash the refs or the calls.  Refs will make mistakes, the game is too fast.  I certainly do not want to add more reviews and opportunity to turn calls over, but i would like to see the replay.  Sure wish they would fix the stupid offsides challenge review.  The way it is done now is just downright stupid.

Regardless, it sucked.  I wanted Buffalo to get the win, and I figured since they totally outplayed Montreal, Buffalo would lose in OT on a silly bounce or something - just seems to be the way it goes in the NHL sometimes.
Montreal wins in OT in game 7 in both series and deserved to lose both of those games.

Yea, Habs are hangin' by thread. Won't be suprised to see them swept in round 3. Though, they did say they were 3-0 vs Hurricanes in regular season! We know, all too well, that means Jack Shit in the playoffs..

Rich - that was how I saw it as well. The whistle definitely blew before the puck was knocked in, but it was a quick whistle. Sometimes they do go over controversial calls and bring in the old ref - Dave Jackson I think - but they didn't do that on this one and barely showed a replay. You are right that they don't want to call out the refs and I get that, but in a Game 7 and with Buffalo involved, I think they should have paid it more attention. I really can't believe that they made no mention of it in the intermission - with Subban, etc....  Buffalo got screwed but they could/should have still won that game.

Tarik said the signing was due to Sandin's knee injury.. Never heard a whole lot about it, but think he tore a ligament. IIRC they said he wouldn't be ready by season's start.

* Dowder's eng put Colorado away in game 1 of WCF. No Makar gonna make it interesting if he can't go here shortly..

Yeah i figured the Lindjegren signing was a sign they know they will be without Sandin.

AND I sure the heck hope TVR is moving on.  I worry they will sign him as a stable anchor, but I am afraid he is more of an ANCHOR dragging us down

Liljergren is interesting.  After they got him, they played him a bit but he sat out some games that I thought they would play him in to see if they wanted to keep him. That's a pretty decent salary and they must have liked him. He was a first rounder (17th) in 2017 so he has the pedigree and maybe they think he can be another Dylan Strome story.

Hopefully we can get in a situation where we can play some actual Defense next year and not just stress over scoring a goal and putting the load on LT's shoulders to win the game. I swear we'd be picking in the top3-5 if it wasn't for LT.

And though we all hope TVR moves on, I really don't recall saying "Fuck, TVR AGAIN" much last year? The whole D unit was bad, as far as playing defense goes.. Maybe they need to work on the scheme/plan..

But Lilj looked fine from what I remember of the 2 games he played. Or was it 3 games? Small sample, either way.. But IIRC he could skate, wasn't shy physical wise and wasn't really noticed on the ice for his play in the D zone (that's a good thing, imo.) Don't think he's gonna score much/any, but we need to address that with a star center/winger..

It’s only been about 5 hours since it was reported he went to the hospital. Some kind of illness, and he’s reportedly not been feeling well since the last race.

Caps hire a new assistant/PP coach..

https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/washington-capitals/players/bennett-the-perfect-fit-for-a-capitals-team-in-desperate-need-of-a-power-play-renaissance

I don't know why this new coach is a "perfect fit" for the PP.  He was with the Islanders last season and they finished 30th in PP percentage - below the Caps.

As for Liljegren's signing, I guess since the Caps were playing pretty well for the most part down the stretch they wanted to dance with who brung 'em, meaning TVR, rather than playing Liljegren.  Lil is seen as a bottom-pairing defenseman I believe, so he fits the TVR mold.  The question is, how is the defense on the left side going to be ordered?  Who's the 3rd LHD among Chychryn/Fehervary/Hutson?  Hutson has a natural D partner in Roy, but I think Roy is considered top 4 on the right side.  That leaves Liljegren paired with Fehervary, but neither of them has significant offensive chops.  The Caps will still need to find someone to pair with Chychryn, unless Roy pairs with him.  In which case, we need a big, strong stay-at-home RHD to pair with Hutson.  SOMEONE has to be brought in, because McIlrath is nothing but a very occasional fill-in.

I feel at least 60% of our PP woes last year were the personnel on the ice. It took Carbery most of the season before he started playing Leonard on PP1. As soon as he did it was noticeably better, imo. Then the addition of Hutson. Hopefully that with fresh eyes will have it competent at least.

I think you're right, Mick - there's only so much a coach can do given the personnel that are on the ice.  Part of the coach's job is to put the right people on the ice.  But that can be a tricky thing - how long do you stick with personnel who have done it for you in the past before you reach the point where you HAVE to switch it up?

I follow baseball as well as hockey.  This baseball season there seem to be quite a few players who have been very good in the past who are off to horrendous starts this season - and the season is now almost 1/3 over.  It would seem that the amount of rope these players have earned to work their way out of their troubles depends on how good they have been, and for how long.

An EXTREME example of this in the case of the Caps is the elephant in the room - what is going to happen with Ovie?  He has been among the greatest to ever play the game, for a VERY long time.  But we know that he is now a very limited player (no criticism: Father Time is undefeated), and his remaining capabilities have to be managed, which causes the coach to have to juggle other players in the forward rotation to accommodate when it is advisable to play Ovie and when it isn't.  In light of that, what has Ovie earned IF he wants to come back this upcoming season?  Has the earned the right to get a contract for any non-ludicrous amount (say, up to $10 million?)  Should the Caps say "we'd like you back, but only up to a certain salary point (to pick a number, say, $5 million.  And if this is the right course of action, the next question is, what should that max number be?)?  Or should the Caps say "We as an organization need to move on.  We aren't going to offer you a contract, and you can become a free agent if you wish."?
