when Vegas comes here Sunday Schmitty will have an A on his sweater. That’s yet one more reason the Caps shoulda kept him

listening to post game with Ken Saborn, apparently we have a player named Bearakowski, again. Honestly, if it were me that man would not interview me until he can pronounce my name.

Many of us knew that leaving him unprotected was a mistake.  GMBM really screwed up on that one.  I knew Schmidt was a future star just a few months into his time with the Caps. They could have probably kept him without taking a big cap hit too. I've missed him for sure.

Pretty tough to keep him considering we could only protect 3 dmen

Like 90% of things, GMBetaMale beyond screwed this up.  Considering protected MoJo, who he had to trade because he was bullied to overpay the Euros, then only got a third for him.   Also throw in Bura who he not only overplayed, but who’s top-shelf talent, has totaled 4 goals this year.

All while loosing a quality D and going into the season with a DCotps in shambles.

This was enough for him to be canned at almost any other team

No one is answering who we should have left exposed instead of Schmidt. We protected 3 dmen and 7 forwards and Schmidt was our 4th dman. I may have exposed Niskanen. Vegas might not have taken him and if they did we would have dumped a big salary. Another option would have been to protect 4 dmen and 4 forwards. We might have lost a key forward but we have still had Schmidt and we might have been able to keep Johansson as well. Either way we were going to lose a pretty good player. Other teams had the same problems. The Panthers decided to protect 4 dmen and they ended up leaving a 30 goal scorer exposed. Not sure what they were thinking. In the end the rules for the expansion draft cost quite a few teams and help build the Knights into what they are. Pretty easy Pickens for the expansion team

Mojo and Eller, protecting Beagle and Schmidt.

If GMGM took either Mojo or Eller we save cap money and still keep a center.  Even then we could add depth at forward via UFA (if they aren’t sent to Hershey), and then there’s enough forwards in Hershey to bring up and down so you don’t hurt your DCorps that already is hurting.

Who would have they left unprotected?

I wanted Schmidt protected over Carlson, but IMO we should have been allowed to protect 4 defensemen.  I was a huge Schmidt fan from very early on and was the first on the forum to proclaim he was a future star.

I thought the teams were required to leave too many players exposed for Las Vegas. Obviously, given their current record the Golden Knights got to cherry pick from too many great players. There were plenty of teams with more than 4 good defensemen for them to pick from and do well. Limiting protection to 3 Defensemen was pretty messed up IMO. This was only for one expansion team.  The teams were allowed to protect less players than in the previous expansion draft which was for two expansion teams. It will be pretty messed up if LVGK win the cup this year.

Heh, it would of been pretty damn cool if teams could adjust their protected list after each pick, . .

well if any GM could have still planned it to work to his advantage, it’s GMGM.

I’ve said this before, but the ownership in Vegas is letting GMGM do his own thing and reaping the rewards.

I mean here’s a team with out a single bonafide superstar, that’s in the toughest division, and is a legitimate Cup contender in their first year, and will only get better.  That isn’t just because the new expansion draft rules, that’s because they got the perfect GM to burn the league with it

We could have protected 4 dmen but then we could only protect 4 forwards. It sounds like thats what DC was thinking we should have done. I dont disagree. I think new would have lost Eller, Johansson or Burakovsky. I could have lived with that. We lost Johansson anyway.
Oh ArJunaz, I know you dont care for Carlson but he is head and shoulders our best dman. Protecting Schmidt over Carlson is preposterous. You can't even say for Cap reasons because 3 Caps dmen make more than he does. I know you dont care for the guy but let's try to be realistic.

Pretty much, however. . . leaving Carlson unprotected may have worked for us.

GMGM didn’t just pick players, he picked contracts, so he could very well have not picked him.  I’m not talking about the player himself, but his contract for an expansion team.  We all know Carlson will be getting a payday, and had he had the year he had had here, resigning him would have been tough for GMGM considering the cap situation he’ll  have coming up.

So while almost no one would say Schmidt is better than Carlson in Carlson’s role.  His contract, and price tag makes him a far better choice for GMGM as he gets an upper tier Dman for far less than Carlson’s.

If Carlson was available I am positive they would have taken him. If the contract was a problem they would have drafted him just to trade him.

I would not put that past GMGM, nor am I positively be he would of, or the rules for trading the expansion picks.

I did stumble across this old article though, LA did what I was suggesting and expose high dollar players and protecting value players. . .  and low and behold, look who the number one unprotected player was: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/2017/6/17/15825002/nhl-expansion-draft-unprotected-players-2017-vegas-golden-knights

I love Schmitty as much as the next guy, but how much of the love Schmitty is getting is Monday morning quarterbacking.  For almost all of last year he was our 6th - 7th D-man.   You don't protect a guy who can barely crack your starting lineup, unless as DC suggested you are trying to entice GMGM to pick up a contract you could do without.

Most of us saw his potential when he was here, that's the upsetting part. and he wasn't a part of the core that disappears every April

Yes, there is a fair amount of Monday Morning QBing here. and last year he was 6th - 7th on the depth chart.

However, at the least, GMBetaMale knew, or should of known, that Alzner and Shattenkrap would not be back, and i believe Orlovs contract wasn’t done, which left Schmitty, Chrony, and Hershey to fill out the DCorps.
So I believe the biggest issue is protecting the likes of Mojo, Bura and Eller while exposing an excellent young two-way Dmam that can play both sides all while you’re at risk of loosing half you’re DCorps.

Hey I think Schmidt is a great kid and has a chance of being an elite Dman.  However if there wasn’t an immediate need for him, I’d say good luck.  So this is less about the person/player, it’s more about GMBetaMale being a terrible GM

DC the facts don’t support your contention that BMac is a bad GM.  The year before he took over the Caps didn’t make the playoffs.  Since he has been here we have had the best regular season record in two of the three seasons.  This year despite all of our personnel losses the team has done much better than most people expected.  I think MacLellan has done a fantastic job and the only GM who has done a better job during this time is Rutherford.  There are a heck of lot worse GMs out there and we are fortunate to have BMac IMO.

I dont think anyone here had a problem with Schmidt. I wish we found a way to keep him.
