it was a nice comeback, but I gotta say, a Norris candidate doesn’t throw the puck over the glass with 5:00 when you’re trying to tie the game

Good point Alta!
Carlson has many good qualities,  and has worked hard to increase his value for this team, no doubt!

But I’m talking about him FINALLY, getting the chicken-shit, pussy part of him, EXPOSED!! A part of him that he most fervently, cleverly, and with marked intention, tries desperately to keep from being discovered!!
Other than improving his offensive skills, (yes, that’s a pure compliment!),  I believe there’s nothing more he works harder on, than masterfully hiding his wimpy side!!

Carlson muffed that puck because he was scared, and intimidated, by the skater closing in on him from behind! Or his perception of that!

His mentality of natural reluctance, and over-avoidance of physicality, was highlighted here!
Mind you, this is a rare and difficult thing to catch, obviously, due to the exact timing of the circumstances, BUT, we were able to see Carly in the RAW, this time!

With no time for him to think of a way to make it appear differently!
We saw Carly have a “panic-driven”, brain fart, of a puck clearing or pass!  Worse than that, is that it wasn’t even like he was going to get hit HARD or anything!  He wasn’t in any imminent danger of real harm!!
But his pussy ass didn’t perceive it that way, and therein lies the issue!!!

And for the millionth time, I KNOW he is an invaluable player on our team!  The point I’m making here has NOTHING to do with that!

It does have something to do with the fact that when the “physicality”, rubber meets the road,  this motherfucker of a defenseman, selfishly looks out for himself, NOT the team!

Not sure?
Let’s just add in the countless number of “panic-driven”, icing passes he commits, in those games where we have a 1, or even 2 goal lead, in the last 1 or 2 minutes.
The opponent is playing 6 on 5, in OUR, zone, THERE IS AN EMPTY NET, and Carlson gets a puck rebound, from Holtz,  somewhere randomly behind the goal line in our zone.

Carlsen actually has time and space, to pass safely to one of our guys,  but in the hurried moment, in HIS mind, he makes an UNNECESSARY, knee-jerk type, clearing pass, that goes all the way down to the other end for icing.
This ends up stopping the clock, OUR GUYS can’t leave the ice, and the puck is brought back down to the face-off circle in OUR zone!!

The opponent, then gets to put out their FRESHEST, and talented six guys,  against our ever-tiring, five guys, left to defend in our zone!
THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!  It’s way too familiar of a scenario, and often, multiple times in a game by Mr. Carlson, singularly!

AND, it’s been happening since, like, forever,  which means that even if it’s been addressed, repeatedly over the many years,  HE doesn’t change it!
THAT, my friends, is one SELFISH son of a bitch!
He may be charitable in his personal life, and God bless him for that, but not, I repeat, NOT as a member of the CAPS team , IMO!!

And all we hear out of Joe and Lockers yap, is “JOHN CARLSON”, this....(insert kiss-ass complement, here), or “JOHN CARLSON”, that.....(insert more ass-lick praise)!!

Truth is, he’s deserving of much of it!!  But these three must be “closet buddies”, off the clock, with the way they endlessly gush over the guy!!!  It’s sickening sometimes!

Now, I don’t waste a nano second, fully admitting his true good value to the team,  and allowing myself to appreciate his contributions!!

But it’s the FRAUD, he covertly attempts, trying to convince the cameras, that he’s just on the verge of getting into a fight, or some other fake-ass yelling tirade, cleverly backed off of, at just the right time.... that allows me to appreciate the rare moment, when this, 6’3”, 215 lb. defenseman,  and his deep, internal, pussification of the brain,  actually gets exposed for what it is, once in a while!👍

Damn Alta, you got my motor started!!😂🤣

When I saw that I cut him a lot of slack. Kane had just grabbed Carlson a split second before and Meier railed him into the boards one millisecond after he released the puck. Kane was hitting him with his stick from behind as he flung the puck and the only reason he let go was because Carlson elbowed him. I'd call it under extreme duress.  I actually thought they might not call the penalty because contact had been made between Carlson and Meier almost as the puck left his stick.  The question is why he was behind our goal all alone with two Sharks.  There were dumber penalties taken by the Caps in this game.

Hey AJ!

Well, I posted my post, (angry rant), BEFORE seeing your post!😁

My point is, I’ve learned to respect your “eyes”, over the time I’ve been on this board!

I did not see any replays of Carlsons delay of game penalty, except the quick repeat during the game telecast!  I made my judgments about it based on my memory of it.

I’m going to go try and find a replay of it again, in order to take a closer look,  as you have a history of seeing things pretty clearly, IMO.

If that kind of contact happens, that you describe against Carlson, when he has the puck,  then I’ll have no problem admitting my mistake, here! ( after all it was a pretty long rant! ) !! LOL 😆

I’ll leave the possibility open that my brain may still be stained, and I may be seeing what I want!

( but it sure fucking fits the old narrative though, you gotta admit!) 😂🤣😂

Thanks AJ........(to be continued)👍

I found the game still available on livestream and recorded a couple segments off my screen with my phone.  I think it came out pretty good.
Here is the Carlson delay of game penalty.
I'm not going to say he couldn't have done better, but he was under some pressure there.

THIS VIDEO WAS RE-UPLOADED FOR BETTER QUALITY

I captured this 10 minute clip of the last and best parts of the Capitals' historic win over the Sharks. It's hand held and jumps around a bit as I try to skip commercials on the fly.  I figured we could use a video record of this historic moment.

This will probably not get me a whole lot of love around here, but I'm going to come to John Carlson's defense.

As for Carlson's delay of game penalty, this was not a panic move on his part.  Carlson moves the puck around the boards when he's caught behind the net to try to start a clear when he can't do it himself by using the boards and glass.  And Carlson has been in the league long enough to understand the timing of NHL hockey plays.  He know's he's going to get hit by Meier whether or not he releases the puck, because Meier is too close - Carlson is fair game for contact even a split second after release.  What he DOES do by releasing the puck is get it up ice to where his teammates have a 4 on 3 manpower advantage.  The most likely alternative, when being hounded 2 on 1, is giving up the puck in the defensive zone, earning Chicago more zone time at a point in the game where time is starting to become a factor.

Carlson didn't try to shoot the puck out to the rink there; he simply tried to play it off the glass and up the side, and got too much air under the puck.  Maybe the puck flipped on him at the last millisecond or something -- I don't know.  The issue here wasn't Carlson's attitude, it was his execution.

As for the extended rant about icing the puck when defending a 6 on 5 coming down the stretch, interesting you should mention that.  It is EXACTLY what San Jose did after Vrana's goal, bringing the Caps back to the offensive zone for the play that set up Oshie's tying goal.  Teams do it all the time, especially in the last minute of the game when protecting a 1-goal lead.  Get the puck out of the zone at any and all costs, with the worst case being that some seconds are eaten up while the opponents chase the puck (since they are crowding the offensive zone anyway), and your presumed best defenders on the ice get a bit of a break while the puck is being retrieved.  Don't forget, in the last minute of play you probably have your best defenders on the ice anyway, and they're going to stay out there until the horn sounds, so continuous play while the clock keeps running isn't always your best friend.  And I cannot tell you how many times someone doesn't clear the zone when they have a clear shot at lambasting the puck, tries to make a play into the zone somewhere, the puck ends up NOT leaving the zone because the opponents are pressuring everything due to the game situation, and the opponents turn around and score it.

It is easy for us to criticize moves made by an NHL player while seated above it all.  Things (1) look different when you are on the ice surface; and (2) are commonly supported by the player's experience of the best tactic having been through situations like this hundreds or thousands of times, as well as the organization's preference of what is to be done in such situations.  If John Carlson weren't doing what the organization wanted during the last stages of the game, he wouldn't be on the ice in the last stages of the game.  Think I'm kidding myself?  Look how much time Ovechkin spends on the ice in such situations.  Ovechkin's skill set is not good for protecting a late lead, so he doesn't see much ice time in those situations.  Often times, Eller or someone like Dowd takes his place when Ovie's line mates are on the ice in those situations, giving the Caps better defense and two centers on face-offs in case one is thrown out of a face-off.

Carlson is not Wilson, or even Gudas.  What he is, is a generally effective NHL defender who, because of his overall skill set, is recognized as one of the top defenders in the league, by people who know a lot more about the game than we do.

Carlson doesn't fight (and may even fear that part of it, who knows) but outside of fighting I don't see a reluctance to avoid being physical. He doesn't go out of his way, but have you ever seen the guy get pissed off? He's a big boy and can put your dick in the dirt when he feels necessary.. Does he get pushed around? I don't recall it.. The delay of game? We start picking apart dumb penalties by the Caps and we'll be here a while.. To me anyway, he's made leaps and bounds from the "Dylan" days. Dude is just a straight up legit defender who's got a very high offensive side to his game as well.. Money well spent, so far, imo..

First off, thank you AJ for finding the clip. I tried looking for a clip this morning, and failed, as it was late and I went to bed right after I made my post earlier.
In short, I really appreciate you saving me the time, And effort, as I see That the only way to review it again, for me and my technology here at my home, Would be to watch the second telecast of the game at 12 noon on Comcast sports today! Thanks again👍
OK, now on to my comments.

Well, I have to admit, there actually WAS more pressure on him, along the boards, just prior to his pass, AND, the threat of a big hit WAS imminent, just after his release of puck. Basically, my memory had recalled a “softer” event, than the reality of it, upon closer inspection.

There are a couple points I’m going to make here so follow me.

I think that Carlson actually handled the first part pretty well, prior to him regaining control of the puck. In fact, I NOW believe he was HELD, and a penalty should have been called! Then, at least we would have had OFFSETTING penalties, as the refs would have allowed play to continue, since Carlson had possession, immediately after the holding, and THEN, he would have received the delay of game! Offsetting penalties would have been better, although, permit me to quickly reflect for just a second, that it would not have mattered because we had a very emotional WIN, which although I didn’t choose to address it, is the bigger story in the overall picture

The replay video does change my mind that what Carlsen did, in this instance, is more understandable, from merely a human perspective, however, I feel that it also helps my narrative, in that the video shows clearly, in my opinion, that it was the imminent HIT, that was just about to come, in that short instant, when Carlson had SOLE possession of the puck, he actually SAW it coming for just a split second, prior to his release
If Carlsons’ puck release, at THAT exact moment, resulting in the UNINTENDED, and WAYWARD, puck path, doesn't EPITOMIZE, what an afraid and panicked defenseman does, then I don’t think any other example in history could rise to that level, if that’s not the bar of proof!!

So that I don’t double, and triple over myself, I will go into more detail when I address Blackices’, response to my post. He makes some fair points, but there’s a lot there to digest in his post and it’s gonna take me a little time.
I’ll be addressing Micks post, as well, as it’s quite persuasive to me! (As usual, he’s always persuasive!)👍👍

Again, AJ, thanks for putting that replay out for me, you’re always good like that!,👍👍😀😀

Leave it to you, Mick, to REEL ME BACK IN a bit, (pardon the pun)! You’ve done it successfully before, with me, especially when I get a little too, “old school emotional”, sometimes!😁👍👍

Thanks buddy. I can’t really disagree with much in your post, at all, in that I DO agree, and have posted before, that Carly, will show some pissed off roughing around, when he’s been made angry! So I guess that’s proof that he actually DOES have it in him deep down in the recesses of his mind somewhere.😁 it’s probably just a little too few and far between, for my taste!

The board can easily witness, since the start of the season my see-saw attitude with John Carlson! LOL! It really is what it is, for me!!
It’s hard to warm up to him, although I know he’s very valuable.
It’s almost like, if my negative, towards JOHN Carlson, were a compulsive addiction, in light of his otherwise great offensive contributions, then I’m probably right in the middle of my time, at the addiction TREATMENT CENTER!😂🤣
As his overall value increases for the team, AS IT HAS, I find myself trying to balance, shaking off some of my older thoughts, while making room for the improved Carlson to marinate a bit!  All I can say, brother, is it’s a process I’m working through!😁😁

On a much bigger view, I’m kind of hoping that this emotional game last night, May be a real positive turning point away from this general lull we’ve seen in the past few weeks!
With that exciting of a game, I can think of no better reason for our boys to want to turn things around👍👍👍
Thanks again, Mick!

No way in HELL Carlson would be able to do this in anyday or age, he just ain’t good(or man) enough to do this

(I love how Kairya just lays there and quivers.  That’s when you know you hit the enemy right )

At best, he’s a slower, OK low rent Paul Coffey that has Ovechkin to pad his stats.  People act like hes fuckin Nick Lindstrom, and put him in the same class as Chara and Burns. . .
If he played for Arizona, would he have the same numbers and the team would be first in division because John Carlson?   No way in hell.

I would hope that Carlson never lays a hit on anyone as dirty and brutal as that Scott Stevens hit on Paul Kariya.  I'm all for big hits, but not the stuff that hurts people permanently.  Kariya suffers major brain damage from hits like that.  I was just reading that he doesn't remember that hit or anything that happened for the next three days, including scoring goal 5 minutes after that hit in game 6 of the series, nor does he remember any of game 7.  Scary that they let him play on after that hit.
I don't think Carson is the type of person to want to hurt anyone, and I am fine with that.  Now sticking up for yourself or your teammates is something else and all players should do that.  I'm all for a retaliatory strike.
Be careful what you ask for America; you just might get it.

Well, Black, as usual, you have NOT disappointed, in your always, well-versed replies to my posts, whether they be pro, or con, to my view!
You may or may not get a lot of love here, from your post, as you mention, (I can’t call it), BUT... you will receive some respect for your opinion!

Whether I agree, disagree, or partially agree/disagree, with you, I always respect the ability of CLARITY, and the plausible reasoning behind your statements! (and NO, this is not some kind of reverse kiss-ass, butter up stuff, if anyone is inclined to be suspicious. I’m simply acknowledging, with appreciation, the mans care, and attentiveness, to good communication skills!)!👍👍

Having said that, You’ve given me a lot to digest, my friend, so I’ll try to respond to your post, paragraph by paragraph, that is, AFTER I address the LAST paragraph of your post, FIRST!

“Carlson is not Wilson, or even Gudas”.
Come on Black, I’ve got to give a good NSS on that one! (that’s Non Sense Sherlock, or the other one that’s more emphatic!)😁
Maybe a comparison, that’s a bit TOO opposite, Black, to believe that my points on Carlson, start with an expectation that he isn’t “Wilson level”, THEREFORE, THAT is why I think he’s a pussy!
Think about that reasoning, Black; for just a second.

If we had a hypothetical debate, in which you tried to persuade, and debate, that Mother Theresa, despite all her charitable attributes, STILL, had character flaws as a human being....and one of my counter points to you, was to say “Well, Black, Mother Theresa is NOT Hitler, or even Stalin”
I hope you see my point in this example, in that, YOU never even came close to such a comparison, and would think it absurd!
You would even be right, in this example, to say that I’d stooped to such a ridiculously low bar of comparison, As to call the weakness of my points into question. Otherwise, why would I need to do it??

YOU didn’t make the Mother Teresa/Hitler comparison. That would have been completely idiotic in its own right!! I DID IT, FOR YOU!! (falsely, I might add!).
Instead, I have to attribute it TO YOU, and incorrectly so,  In an effort to bolster my position!
Lawyers do this all the time. Starting a conclusion, with an absurdly, over exaggerated premise! And if the jury BITES THE BAIT, his client may win!....(respectfully, though, not here, sir!)

Now, I’ve obviously, illuminated, and exaggerated, the example here, to make my point. But hopefully you get my drift.

Well said, Bro!
I would however,  wager that sitting down with DC, watching some greatest of all time hockey fight reruns, (and don’t forget to add in a few shots of JACK “century“), would be a pretty fun evening!

The thing is, that hit was more brutal due to the size mistmatch.  Stevens would and did hit ANYONE the same way.
It wasn’t as if Kariya had challenged to multiple fights and Stephens ran away to blind side him.
It also wasn’t a cheap shot where Karia had no idea, nor reason to think he was gonna get checked head first into the boards.
That was just hitting the guy with the puck, and hitting because Stevens loved to hit.

It was just a “hockey play”.  Stevens didn’t pull-up because the name on the bsck of the jersey, and Kariya didnt respect who was on the ice to not be aware of it.

You’re right, Carlson wouldnt hit someone like that, but it’s because he ain’t D-man enough to do it

I have re-uploaded the video above of the Caps historic comeback win.

2020-01-05 Caps Historic OT Win over Sharks from a 4-2 Deficit with 1 minute left in Regulation.

I'm aware that my opinion doesn't carry quite as much clout as some others. but I also would put my hat in to defend John Carlson.  This year.
He's been a volcano candidate many times and for several years, but tjis year.... NO.
HeS been great.
A slightly shaky start to the year, but then STEADY as she goes.  No sign of the lazy, lacklustre, "Dylan" that he used to be.  I've really liked the way he's played this year, so far.

in fact there's not much of the team that I would change.
I LIKE this team.
We have interchangables.....
If one guy goes down, we have a replacement.  We have options.

We have everything.   ;D
We have all those things we never had and always used to whinge about.........all at once!

All 4 "C"'sPlayers sticking up for each other.  We have scrappers.
Proteting our golie.Protecting eack other.offence AND defence.Net prescence.
We have one of the best bottom 6 lines n the NHL.
We have a damn good team.

I LIKE this team.   :hearts:

Hey LIL!!👍

How have you been?  Good to hear from you, as we haven’t talked in a while with each other!
Glad to see you’re still doing good justice to representing CAPS hockey, as possibly our sole, board ambassador in Surrey! Hell, maybe even all of the UK!
(Oh yeah, FYI, I had to get a new iPhone recently, and when deciding what data to transfer over, I saw that short little Alan May clip, from quite awhile ago!  So if you ever lose it,  i’ll always have a copy on iCloud)!   Not bad for a non-techie, huh??😁😁

Anyway, I feel good to hear that you’ve turned the corner from the old “Dylan” mentality, and progressed on to liking and appreciating his play.
Who can fault you? The guy totally deserves it, and believe it or not, I actually appreciate him too!

I realize that the majority of my posts on the matter, this season, can be confusing! I have tried hard, with some questionable success, to try and SPECIFY, just exactly where I am, with this subject.

Honestly, sometimes my trying to be as CLEAR as I can, ( and I’m no genius, but you know I can be quite descriptive! Oftentimes too descriptive, RIGHT!!!)😆, can come off as too intense!  I know this because my life circle of friends, mentions this aspect from time to time! LOL

It’s been both a positive, and a curse sometimes, for me personally, depending on the situation.  My customers, with their heating and air-conditioning equipment, REALLY appreciate it, but other times, especially in social situations, I must come off like a thorn in someone’s ear!
Guilty on both, I say.

Quickly, and sparing you any more of my crazy self analysis,  I try to nutshell my feelings on John Carlson for you.

The part I don’t like about him, looms HUGE, to me personally, but is quite micro in the overall John Carlson/Caps defenseman existence in reality!  So that when I talk about his negatives, here on the board,  I have pulled a small piece of the puzzle,  put it under my intense microscope,  and then rant away,  from a personal peeve place in my brain!

When I talk on his positives,  it is a zoom out, macro look, at the obvious reality, I exist in, with all the other Caps fans,  that admires his incredible contributions to our Capitals team!  My brain definitively has a section reserved, where I can overwhelmingly appreciate his value, respect him as an integral, and influential member of our CAPS team, of which I am a huge fan of!

Calling one side, as coming more from my sub-conscience,  and the other side as coming from my reality experience, as far as all things Washington Capitals, is really about as honest of an assessment as I can furnish you!

Hope that helps, LIL!
 Good to talk to you.
On a lighter note, I severely disagree with your posts opening, that you think your opinion doesn’t carry as much clout here.  Let me just say,  that you were one of the veterans on the old board, when I first joined. And I haven’t forgotten, the few others, YOU included, that gave me a warm, sincere welcome,  when I was a “poster boy” nervous newbie!
