Solid defensive game after the first few minutes. And Copley was very good again. He looks very confident between the pipes. I thought he played well technically tonight too. I really liked what I saw.

There are SO many ignorant people around the NHL that stereotype Tom Wilson as a no-talent goon.

FWIW, no-talent goons aren't consistently near or at the top of the TOI stats for forwards.  Wilson, in his THIRD game back, played more than any other forward last night, 24+ minutes.  Even in his first game back he was over 16 minutes.  The guy can PLAY, period.

Yes he can.  There was a reason he was taken with the 16th overall pick in the year he was drafted.  He is a unique player in that he is skilled but also a very physical player.  People do not realize what a good skater he is.  I watch him in practice and he is one of the fastest skaters in a straight line on the team.  We are lucky to have him.

Agreed. Wilson is a beast. He is a very good all round player. I'm not sure I liked the way the Caps developed him but it seems to have worked out fine.

Caps did a really good job of shutting down arguably the best line in the league.  I thought all our defenseman played well and it was good to get Kempny back.  Iam not sure what the reason was for changing the defense pairings but they seem to be working.  Orlov has played his best since being paired with Carlson.

Hopefully all our injured players who are eligible to play will be back against Montreal.  If they are not I will start to get worried.  I could see Oshie missing a substantial amount of time.  As I recall he missed several games last season due to a concussion and then when he came back it took him a long time to get back to his usual self.   Orpik is eligible to play against Chicago on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see who he replaces if in fact he does play.  The reality is he may have a hard time getting back in the lineup.

The pairings were changed because Orlov and Niskanen struggled so much together. For some reason our left dmen have all played better when paired with Carlson. Orlov, Kempny and Djoos all have played their best with Carlson.
I think Kempny has been our worst dman recently but I doubt he gets scratched. I hope they dont scratch Bowey since his game has progressed so much the past few games. The guy that seems to be the most expendable is Djoos. I havent seen any progress in his game. In fact I think Bowey has passed him. The biggest problem with Djoos is he gets pushed around too easily. He can't win a puck battle. He isnt very good defensively because he has no strength. The only thing he does in the defensive zone is try to poke check. I really dont see Djoos as a long term player here. Especially with all the left side prospects we have. Even after Orpik is gone I only rank Djoos 6th as a left dman in the future. Behind Orlov, Kempny, Seigenthaler, Johansen and Alexeyev. That's assuming we keep all of those guys.

I agree about Djoos. I had hoped he would work out, but he just doesn’t have the size and strength. After watching Bowey’s start last year I thought he had no chance of making it, but I have to say he is really improving and I think he is with us for the long term.  He still makes some boneheaded mistakes, but so do our other men from time to time.

that non call and non disciplinary on the Oshie play was frikin disgraceful. The league keeps saying they are trying to get rid of head hits, even suspended a guy 20 games because of it. But when someone in a Caps sweater gets his head slammed on the ice it's apparently not that big of deal

Yes, the early returns suggest that the Eastern Conference balance of power may be continuing to shift toward the Atlantic Division (years of more favorable draft positioning is finally paying dividends for some of those teams).  And the Metro certainly looks to be a dogfight, and might send only 3 teams to the playoffs this year.

The Caps have been quite fortunate injury-wise the last few seasons, but maybe things are starting to turn against them that way.  That's the way it goes -- not much you can do about injuries, and especially on the forward lines the Caps have precious few options to try to fill in.  And since they are hard up against the salary cap they can't bring anyone of any consequence in at this point without jettisoning salary in the other direction.  To a large extent, what we see may be what we get this season.

Hey Maaco.
I do agree with part of your assessment. Orlov and Nisky, for whatever reasons, were not a good combo, and needed to be separated.
Orlov has been looking confused, STILL, (and has been since game one of this year), as to his D assignments, especially when opponents start cycling in our zone!

As far as Carly goes, any FAIR or serious discussion about his overall play, IMO, should be definitively partioned into two separate, and distinct, yet simple analyses! One on his offensive production, and the  other for defensive skill. WHY?  Because they are as far apart, as east is from west!!

I gave #74 some decent credit , early on, as I witnessed some faster skating, quicker reaction, and even some elevation in his physical game. As another positive he does give up the body sometimes to block shots! All fair and good!

So, his O side, speaks for itself. Just a slight drop recently, but no problem. I believe he will continue to produce, with the O, on a great level for the Caps this year!

As far as D is concerned, (lets remind ourselves that his title is a DEFENSEMAN), I now see him eroding back to his old style, as of late! His speed, and reaction time have regressed back to the customary and usual “Carly tempo”, that has been his SIGNATURE, to be sure!

There has NEVER been consistent, stellar, D talent from this guy, enough to earn him a respectable reputation, amongst serious minded, honest debate about a DEFENSIVE SKILL SET, period!!  Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of well deserved, positive talk about him, but the lead in, setup statements, will almost always begin their tone with offensive production.

There were two games recently, in which, near the end of the game, the opponent shot the game tieing, or game winning goals! In both cases, Copley and Holtz could and should have made the save!!

However, also to blame was another COMMON THREAD.  John Carlson was the lone defender, in proper position, attempting to challenge his opponent. Being in absolute, shoulders-square, defensive position, and picking his man up, shortly after crossing the blue line!  Both opponents were able to get off a rocket-type wrister, or slapper, as if Carlson was INVISIBLE!!!  These are the very few times that you get such TELLING ISOLATION, on a player!! Otherwise, there is always blame that can be cast around the line on the ice!

I see no merit in your assertion that other D men become better when on ice with Carly! If anything, they inherently have more opportunity to play more D, due to the LACK of defensive assistance from #74! Hence, with Carly, his D linemate is almost FORCED into an atmosphere, where he HAS TO be more attentive on D.  More like, “whoa shit”, versus, having his D game ENHANCED by Carlson.

Lastly, Carly’s positive press, is all too dependent on a good blurring of the line, between offense and defense! The last thing the Carly camp would welcome, would be a binary, overall look, at his play, separating his O, from his D, in honest discussion!!

If the debate is that Carlson is a GREAT total asset to the team, then, Yes, we are at the same party!!!

If the debate is that Carlson is GREAT, (or even good), in his defensive prowess, well, my boy, we are in different solar systems, then!

1) Good O production, decent PK skills, and decent shot blocking!!
2) Bad puck bring up, bad board battle skills, NON-CHALLENGING, low physicality, one trick pony, poke-checker, and slow as molasses!
All packaged in a 6’3”, 215, body! Jeez!

On a more serious note (well compared to my last smart-ass post)

I thought the Caps looked really good against Colorado.  Certainly had the better of the play and had the refs watched the same game the rest of us did (and the goal posts were a little narrower in Gruby's goal) we could have won that game 6-1.  The refs flat out GAVE Colorado a point they did not deserve.

Copley looked really good.  Bowey is looking better.  Wilson is flat out fantastic.  The guy has so much more skill than he gets credit for and he is fast.  He is such an impact player (no pun intended, and sorry if someone has already used that)  He also plays smarter than his rep indicates.  Too bad he's permanently on the DOPS shit list.  Imagine what a star the NHL would make him if he were a Penguin  :O= or a Ranger or even a Canadien?  Yikes, I shutter the thought.

WARNING!  Soapbox ahead:

Geez the lack of DOPS action on both the Kuzy and Oshie hits is.....unequitable (why does this say unequitable is misspelled?)  We as Caps fans are unusually sensitive to the DOPS with all the Wilson history, but the players have to see this as just wrong.  IF the DOPS is truly about PS (and not BS) then both players who committed fouls against Oshie and Kuzy should have received suspensions.  Both fouls meet the criteria for suspensions.  Both of the players hurt were top line players and NHL stars.  Aren't these the guys the NHL actually wants to promote and protect?
If the DOPS continues to be a farce, it just give the players no basis for behavior.  How the hell do they know what is legal and what is not?  If you actually want to change the behavior of the bad hits you have to be able (as a player) to identify what a bad hit actually is.
I honestly did not think the Kuzy hit was that bad.  It did not look like a lot of contact.  HOWEVER, the guy DID target the head and the player was injured as a result of the hit, so the offender SHOULD BE disciplined.  THe game is too fast for the Refs to keep up with 100%, so there will be MISSED calls (i.e. Orlov high stick) and that does not bother me - it is going to happen. But this DOPS bullshit needs to be corrected.  You have two obvious cases here that should have resulted in suspension.
Rant over.

Bowey has stepped up his game.  I like his play, and he is a bit more physical.  Djoos....someone said this in a much earlier post and I had to agree that Djoos, although TOO SMALL TO BE A REAL NHL defensemen has used what skills he has in positioning and smart play to be somewhat effective.  Still, I think he is at best a fill in.  He just isn't big or strong enough to play D in the NHL.

Sure hope we get the guys back soon, but doesn't look like any of the three will play tonight.

One of these days, I'm going to actually watch a game live and be able to post during the game.

Maaco - here is the shorthand. Carlson always has, and always will, make occasional boneheaded, lazy plays that infuriate fans that watch closely. Just when you get excited about his really nice play on offense and a little bit more physical play, he casually throws a puck up the boards for a bad turnover that leads to a goal.

When Carlson, or any other defenseman, is running out of time and throws the puck around the boards, he is doing it because THAT IS WHAT THE TEAM SYSTEM TELLS HIM TO DO.  When in doubt, keep the puck out of the middle of the ice -- make the opponents make a play to get it there.  You notice these "bonehead" plays when we make them, but virtually all teams in the league follow this rule, and you don't think about the times that the Caps intercept a puck thrown around the boards, keep it in and eventually score.  THAT happens all the time too.

The real bonehead play that Carlson makes sometimes is when he throws the puck to no one in particular, or even worse, an opponent in the slot, thinking he can get it to a Cap exiting the zone.  Niskanen has lapses in judgment like that too.  And I've seen Orlov do more of it this year, after really cleaning up his game last season.  That is why opponents sometimes lay off these guys a little bit, hoping to pick off an errant center pass when they think they see something that isn't really there.  I'll tell you who I think is as good as any of our defensemen in avoiding those kinds of errors -- Bowey.  Opponents tend to attack him rather than lay back when he has the puck because they think their best chance of getting the puck from him is to take it away from him along the boards.  But give Bowey a little room and he seems to consistently make the right decisions about whether to take the puck and bring opponents to him before passing or pass it immediately because there IS a clear lane to someone exiting the zone.

Plus Carlson is the lightning rod. He makes the big $ so he gets the attention and bulk of the comments.. Doesn't excuse the mistakes of others, or mean we hate him, he's just the one getting the attention.. (It's also a common move used by the left.. You criticize something, it means you HATE it!!!)

Ex: Looked like Ovie was loafing around instead of getting back on D that shift?? "H8ER!!" That was a dumb play by Carlson!! "WHY DO YOU HATE HIM???" Great, the game doesn't start till 7:30pm tonight.. "Why do you even watch if you HATE the NHL so bad??"  (Ō_ƆŎ) :raspberry:

I already know all this about Carlson. Why would I argue? I agree he needs to be more physical. And I agree he makes some bonehead plays. I have noticed that the board is a lot harder on Carlson when he makes a mistake than they are on the other dmen. And I know people will use the excuse that he gets paid more. Things were no different last year when he was our 4th highest paid dman.
Anyway Carlson has been fine. Not sure why his name keeps coming up.
