Love Willy, but this looks like a commercial deal for the fans, rather than the actual hockey team methinks.
Still, on balance.....   rather we have him than anyone else.
Who do we have left with any type of grit?
Everybody seems to want bigger, taller, heavier.  I would like to see more "Gramps" type players in our team.  more o the mike Knuble's.  Little terriers who can bother these big goalies with quick hands and tip ins and weather the storms in the crease.  Little wiry, wily types that bounce off the big fellas.
By the time the biguns get up a full steam of head, the little imps are aready chasing back down the ice in the other direction.

I think that is the way this team should go.  Gritty little buggers!
Oh!  Wait.........  an AHL team?.......    :lmao:

So that's why you should be happy that the Caps ended up selecting Ryan Leonard with their first round pick in this year's draft.  Leonard plays with more of an edge than any of the other top skill players in this year's draft.

Don't know anything about Leonard.
Will he go straight to Hershey?

He's currently scheduled to start playing for Boston College this upcoming season.

Yep, one more year of college(university) hockey. After that, Id guess he goes to Hershey for at least a season. South Carolina or D.C. seem unlikely destinations right out of college.

Meanwhile the Pens get Erik Karlsonn.  I'm not sure what to think about this as they were able to dump a few non-essential guys and dump some salary, only to take on a huge contract.  They also gave up a 2024 1st round pick (unless it is a top 10 pick).  Most people are rating this as a big win for Dubas, the new GM and it just shows that the Pens are not afraid to make big changes - unlike the Caps.  If Karlsonn plays like he did last year for the next several years, it is a big win. If he plays like he did two years ago, it was a very bad move.

Yea, they got him til he's 36 @ 10m per year. So, Wilson's contract doesn't look that bad in comparison.

I don't really think $6.5m is over paying for Willie.  As Mick said...fighting will be less and less a factor.  The real question is the knee -  and Willie looked pretty damn good (fast) by end of last year.  Of course....maybe that's just in comparison to the old slow guys he's skating with on this team?
I think Willie can still have a huge impact throughout this contract.  Yes last two years is worse than the first 5, but that is true of ANY contract.

Every team in the league would give 6.5m for Willy. Length of contract is the only issue. And I still think it's fine. If he can stay away from chronic injuries (unlike Nicky) he can still play those late years on PK, agitator, enforcer, shut down 4th line forward minutes, as well as bang in a few goals. It's just if you lose multiple steps (Nicky) and can't keep up at all is when you become a huge liability. In a perfect world they sit Nicky on the pine until the PP, but that's not feasible.

GMBM keeps saying he’s still looking to improve the top six. The only way that happens is moving salary, lots of it.

Bye Bye draft pics.  Kuzy and Mantha are the only forwards left to move....Unless you could dump Oshie.
Might be able to move Kuzy without draft pics, but then how are we improving the top 6?  We'd need another Center which are few and far between.  Mantha will be costly to move I think.

Carlson is the only D that would shave enough salary to make enough difference and they ain't ever moving him (and they just signed Jensen and TVR to deals)

Mantha is a UFA next season.  Might have to just suck it up this season and trade him at the deadline for couple rolls of tape or something.
I liked when we acquired him and thought/hoped he'd blossom here, but he surely hasn't.
I'm fine with moving him, but I really don't want to throw away pics or young talent just to dump his salary.

Maybe the new coach will inspire Mantha to a truly breakout year and bring Kuzy back to his highest level of play.
maybe I'll hit the lottery...
maybe I'll catch a Leprechaun..
maybe I'll hit a Unicorn with my truck on the way home...
maybe I'll catch Sasquatch...
maybe the Caps will win another Cup  ....in my lifetime  :'(

I'd love to know the injury type/ratio for fighting in hockey. I'd bet it's by far busted knuckles? But in the name of "violence" they'll ban it all the way through the sport before long. And my interest, once they take all the unique/fun aspects of the game away, will probably fade as it did before Ovi came along..  :-\
