If it were me, I’d pass on Michkov solely based on the 5’10” and 148 part. 5’10” isn’t hateful but he needs 50 more pounds for the NHL.

I've seen weights of 160 to 170 for Michkov elsewhere, so I don't really know his weight.

But I DON'T want to see the Caps move up and give up picks to get him.  I don't think a player you have to wait a minimum of 3 years for is worth giving up something to chase after, especially with the continuing constraints on the salary cap limiting the team's flexibility given their current salary cap situation.  The Caps should be chasing more picks, not fewer.  I'd be perfectly happy with Reinbacher or Dvorsky at #8 if it comes to that.  But I just saw a mock draft with Reinbacher going #5, which is absurd helium for the guy given that he wasn't really on the draft radar before this year.

Now, if Michkov falls to #8 because of the Russia/contract complications, maybe that's a horse of a different color .....

Man October is a long way off.  I hope we see some movement this summer.
When do the trades n such usually happen over the summer?
I afraid the Caps are going to have to give up picks to move Mantha, and likely Kuzy too.
I'm with BlackIce...we need to be collecting picks, not giving them away (especially in the draft)

My bet is that they trade Kuzy to move up a few picks to get Michkov.  They would need to keep a good chunk of his salary to do it though. Looks like they are stuck with Mantha.

Not sure they'd have to retain salary to move Kuzy.. 7.8m for a 31 year old #1 / #2 center isn't that expensive in today's market. But yea, we're stuck with Mantha unless we pay someone to take him.

That’s not a lot for a good 1/2 center, but everyone knows Kuzy has bouts with motivational issues

Some guys are really hyping Michkov on the NHL radio channel - saying that without the Russia issue, he would be the clear number 2 pick. Seems like there is a consensus on the top 5 picks and then the next 8 or so guys have varying ratings - so basically picks 6 through 14 could be solid guys with not a lot of difference.  Given that, if the Caps don't trade up, I wouldn't mind them trading down a few and picking up another pick.

I still don't think he's a "retain salary" guy. Only has 2 years left on his contract. Plenty of time to find out if he's worth it or not and even playing bad he's an assist machine, if you've got a goal scorer on his line.

Looks like Lil' Ovi is in town for development camp. July 1-5.

Ya - I agree on Kuzy.  The more that I think about it, they should get a pretty decent return for him.  There is a shortage at center this off-season and Kuzy has crazy talent.  If properly coached and motivated, which never happened here, he could be a top 10 player.  With our new rookie coach, I don't see that happening with the Caps, but a contender with a tough coach, might really be a good match.  If that happens though, its gonna be painful to watch.

This team needs work everywhere but I'd build from the defense out.  Michkov is going to be gone before #8 anyway unless we trade up but we have limited trade goods as it is.  I saw an article on RMNB where some guy was floating a rumor of Wilson to Ottawa.  Not sure there's any credence to that and Wilson is one guy I wouldn't be anxious to move.  Let's see what he looks like with another full year of recovery time.  OTOH, I'd have no problem with moving Kuz in the right deal.  Carson Soucy is an interesting FA possibility on defense, too.

So assuming Kuzy gets moved...what are WE doing for a #1/2 center?  I mean Strome picked up his game and all, but Strome being your teams top talent at center isn't impressing anybody, and what about Lines 2, 3, 4?  Okay, we have 4, but what about 2 & 3?

I wouldn't be surprised if Caps brought Eller back at 3c if he doesn't get a decent offer somewhere else.  Not that it helps our aging problem.
I don't see Backy as a 1C or 2C.  At best he is a 3c at this point.  Unless he finds a miracle cure for his skates that appear to be melting into the ice when he skates

GMBM debunked the latest Wilson rumors again today. Not sure where that keeps coming from. Wishful thinking by desperate teams I guess.

Is Michkov a Center or a Wing? We're in certain need of a 1C. Though not sure how much that'll matter until we can shed some more age and salary. Still got a few lean years ahead Im afraid.

Michkov is a RW.  I love hearing all these guys on the radio rave about him when none of them has seen him play.  I think that Ted has a little bit of Snyder in him and might want to go after the Russian phenom - we'll see.

As far as moving Kuzy, I think they would only do that if they end up in a bind on the Cap, or if somebody blows them away with an offer. I also think that they would consult Ovi and if he wants Kuzy here, he stays.  Maybe Ovi though is tired of him.

I really hope that they free up enough money to sign Fever to a long term deal - 7 or 8 years at a reasonable number.

They better sign Fever.  He's been a solid NHL caliber guy even at his young age.  I think he will only get better.  We let friggin Ziggy (Siegenthaler) get away (and for nothing).  The Caps desperately need some solid young D.  Carlson, Jensen, TVR....will only decline.
I will be royally pissed and greatly disappointed if they fuck around and don't sign Fever to several years.
I think Alexeyev will also be good, but he has not had as much playing time/development as Fever.  They are both 23, but AA isn't RFA for two more years, so that will help with the cap situation short term.  Of course if he becomes a real stud the next couple years....
Carlson / Jensen / TVR for the old experience D, and Sundin / Fever / Alexeyev for the younger guys.  Meh...that's not terrible.  A team in rebuild and trying to get younger, I see no reason not to play Alexeyev full time this season.
Sundin showed me last year he's certainly ready to play (hope he didn't really injure his knee)
I guess we really need at least one more D.  I wonder if they sign Irwin again for a year as a backup
Man, they HAVE TO sign Fever

Totally agree.  Just think if they had kept Ziggy and then signed Fever long term, that would be a great pair.  They will need to free up some money though to sign Fever at a level he would agree to for a 5 year deal or more.

Still a lot of different projections on who we pick tonight.  Most people are showing Michkov going 4th or 5th still.  All the hype at the top is on Bedard, but man that Leo Carlsson out of Sweden is a horse!  He is 6' 3"  and 193 lbs and is a center that can skate and make plays.  Bedard may be the next McDavid, but he is on the small side and 5 years down the road, I bet Carlsson will be the better player.

Ziggy move rivals the Forsberg deal as far as Im concerned. Just awful management. But that's what DC sports teams do when they're desperate, thinking there's a window to make the playoffs or (laughably) a championship. We moved him for nothing, so we could play 40+ year old Chara for a year?  :-\

Looks like the bumperboards are dead, glad I found this place...looks active.  Nothing to contribute about the draft but looking forward to it!
