Good third period, but, as said before, you can't win playing just one period.
Tbh, we deserved to lose by far more than that.  We sure as hell didn't ddeserve to win.

If the Caps had worked that hard for more than the just the 3rd period we would have crushed this game.

Exactly, why the Caps didn’t play like this whole match I don’t know..

Maybe but the big difference in this game was that Murray was alot better than Samsonov. I don't think the Pens dominated either of the first 2 periods like we dominated the 3rd. The Caps were the better team.

Caps deserved that, they can't play 40:00 on their heals and expect to win in 20:00

I wouldn't dare lay this on Sammy. Sure he missed one or two he should have had, but I expect Holtby would have been no better.  The real problem this game was the lazy attitude.  The team came out strong for 5 minutes and then coasted for 35 minutes.  Our play in our own end is just awful.  Had we worked hard for 60 minutes this would have been a totally one sided win for us.

To say Holtby would have been no better is pure speculation. He may have gotten a shutout, he may have given up 10.
And I'm not laying this on Samsonov. I'm stating the obvious. Murray was better.

Sammy wasn't sharp as usual. But Holeby has put up stinker after stinker. We should still be playing the hot hand, and until Sammy puts together a string of bad games, we shouldn't need to go back to Holts yet.

He missed a couple and Murray save an extra couple. Yes, Caps could still win, but it makes a big difference. Caps had plenty of opportunities and somehow couldn't finish or Murray came big. Ovie wasn't himself, he doesn't miss his shot on PP very often. The team wasn't clicking, a way too many turnovers, but it was a very winnable game.

Well said Raven!
I thought Samsonov played an excellent game. Murray simply stood on his head, and was outstanding in goal today.
Hens had 2 legit goals, and two partial puck luck goals. It happens.

Sammy was the ONLY reason we still had a chance to win, going into the 3rd. Making several rapid fire saves, facing a crease PACKED with penguins, seemingly able to swipe multiple times at the puck, on, BLUE ICE!!....WHY the Caps allowed this to happen is one of the MAIN issues!

Sammy stayed calm, under pressure, as he handed over, to his UNDESERVING teammates, a 3rd period, that was thankfully, STILL within reach of winning, in what could easily have been out of reach!
Hens were ALL OVER the crease, and net crashing, especially through the 2nd period, while our guys puck watched, often, the first 2 periods!

Our PK was good, but PP, AGAIN, could have made the difference! They pathetically DID NOT!

Caps get decent credit for majorly upping their game in the 3rd, but although their “we can dial it in, when we want”, mentality, is a very REAL thing, (and we’re lucky we even have a team that has the option to do so!), and when they “bring it”, it’s extremely successful, but NOT 100% guaranteed, as Mr. Murray kindly informed them by games end!!!

Some of these cockier Caps skaters, unfortunately still feel that their “Dial it in” time, when executed, is completely impervious, and renders their opponents helpless!
Admittedly, most of the time they’re right!
BUT NOT EVERY TIME!!!
Lesson learned, (hopefully), by some of the more immature minded, youngins, on our team, that are realizing they are fallible!!😁

Soon as Wilson started getting physical they woke up.. Not sure why this wasn't a priority from the 1st drop, but I saw a lot of guys pulling up on hits, avoiding contact, etc. up until the 3rd period.

Also, teams will soon catch on that our PP is garbage and probably not be as concerned with taking liberties on our players. That fear of getting scored on during a PP is real and when that's gone...  :smirk:

We missed three open nets. A couple of them weren't the best of angles, but we should have made at least one.  For a game that we made so many turnovers and failed to execute when we had the chance, it was surprising we had a chance.

Eller - other than a stupid penalty (and one he got away with), he played one of his better games.  The NBC announcers were questioning why he wasn't on the ice at the end when we pulled the goalie.

Dowd - thought he played one of his worst games.  I'd like to see Boyd get a start.

Defense - I was hoping we would not do anything at the trade deadline. Now, I'm not too sure. Jensen and Kempny worry me with their turnovers, penalties and inability to play physical.

I think Kempny will be alright.  I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt though I do worry that his injury has slowed him down.  Jensen is another story.  He's generally a ticking timebomb in our own end and we don't need more of them with Orlov and Carlson out there.  If the Caps really wanted to make a run at this thing, they'd pursue Brenden Dillon from SJ.  He's only a -3 on a bottomfeeder and leads the team in hits with 161.  He sounds exactly like what the doctor ordered to shore up this defense.

Agree completely on Dillion, but at 3m and change they’d need to move more than I think they’d be willing to.

I also find it curious that both Nisky and Jensen did and are falling off respectfully, and they where both primarily with paired with Orlov.  Sure he has his strengths, but has a shit ton of faults and mistakes to that do and should nullify his strengths. As there is still sometime for the deadline, shuffling the pairings, including getting Lewington some SERIOUS time and looks, to see what other possibilities and evaluate the weaknesses, mistakes and misfires.

The D has been a persistent issue for years, and it’s not unfair to say that it’s the cause of the majority of loses over the past 10yrs, it’s past time to move away from the pairings set in stone and players being put in pairs in a feudalistic style, and find a better way
