Capitals can’t stay out of the penalty box in a letdown against the Ducks
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/1GvKbNrR2IwzCo_aJbFkbKccmG4=/1484x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/GXXXIARTHQI6TBKKPIKNP7WJNI.jpg)
Ducks right wing Jakob Silfverberg beats Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby for one of his two goals in Anaheim’s 5-2 win. (Mark J. Terrill/AP)
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The penalty box has been a bugaboo for the Washington Capitals this season, a place they can’t seem to stay out of no matter how much they lament their frequent trips there. And after Sunday’s third period started with the team down a man, Washington kept putting itself in that situation with terrible results.
The Capitals put the Ducks on three power plays in the first five minutes of the third period and Anaheim scored on two of them, turning a tied game into an eventual 5-2 blowout loss for Washington. The Ducks hadn’t scored more than two goals in any of their past six games, but their offense came alive against the porous Capitals.
“If you want to be successful in this league, you have to stay out of the box and play five-on-five,” center Nicklas Backstrom said. “That’s something we’ve been talking about for a long time, and there’s no secret. I mean, I feel like when we play five-on-five, we’re a good hockey team. That’s the way we’ve got to do it.”
But Washington’s most significant loss might have come in the second period. After skating three shifts coming out of first intermission, forward T.J. Oshie was ruled out for the rest of the game with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury. Oshie has had five concussions in his career — including one earlier this season — but this wasn’t a head injury, though it’s unclear exactly what the injury is. Entering Sunday night, Oshie had scored five goals with 11 assists in his past 13 games, one of Washington’s most productive players of late.
Coach Todd Reirden said Oshie will be reevaluated on Monday, before the team plays the Los Angeles Kings. Asked if Oshie’s injury could keep him out long-term, Reirden said, “I don’t think so.”
With 27 seconds left in the second period, Capitals forward Tom Wilson was called for goaltender interference, but Wilson immediately objected that Ducks forward Corey Perry had pushed him into Ryan Miller. Regardless of if he had a case, Washington started the third period shorthanded and Adam Henrique scored his second goal of the game on a goalmouth scramble 37 seconds in. Washington has taken the second-most minor penalties in the NHL this season with 211 through 59 games.
“There’s some things that you see differently than the refs, but that’s the way it goes,” Reirden said. “You’re going to like some and then not like some others. It’s up to us to either take advantage when we get a break on the power play or do the job on the [penalty kill] when something doesn’t go our way. Special teams are always an important part of having success, and the details of the game for us weren’t as sharp.”
Capitals forward Dmitrij Jaskin was then assessed a tripping minor 3:02 into the period and the Ducks again scored shortly into their man-advantage, Perry doing the honors this time. Anaheim had scored just eight power-play goals on home ice all season before Sunday. Defenseman Matt Niskanen was called for tripping for another minor penalty less than a minute after that goal. Washington successfully weathered that penalty kill, but the damage was already done. Jakob Silfverberg’s second goal of the game rounded out the scoring for the Ducks with 5:05 to play.
But the Capitals felt like their game had deteriorated even before the third period started.
“We were probably fortunate to be tied going into the third there,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “I mean, it’s easy to point to special teams and penalties, but there’s a lot that went on before that. We just weren’t very sharp. Something we talked about before the game was that we’d been a lot better at minimizing the odd-man rushes we were giving up, and then we give up three in the first five minutes. We weren’t real sharp in a lot of areas.”
Among the issues was faceoffs, of which Washington won just 30 percent, chasing the puck for most of the night. The Capitals are the league’s worst team in the dot this season, and after captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season less than five minutes into the game, the Ducks were able to tie it with a won draw that went to defenseman Brandon Montour. Henrique tipped Montour’s point shot past goaltender Braden Holtby 6:26 into the second period.
The Ducks have been one of the worst teams in the league this season. They dismissed Randy Carlyle as coach a week ago, with General Manager Bob Murray taking over behind the bench for the rest of the campaign. That’s part of what has made the Capitals so frustrating: Three nights after Washington had one of its most complete performances in a 5-1 win against San Jose, one of the NHL’s top teams, came this disappointing outing against lesser competition.
“There’s going to be games you lose, but if you’re play consistently and doing the same thing over and over, there’s going to be some nights you don’t get the results but you’re happy with the effort you put in,” Orpik said. “Right now, I think inconsistent is a good word to describe it.”
-
Seeing as none of the guys came to play last night, they should all be fresh and ready to go for this game. No "tired/back to back" excuses this time.
-
Who's going to take Oshie's place in the 1st pp unit?

Oshie WILL play tonight. He passed the ritual "Cup Check" and looked good on the ice in pregame warmups.
Fourth line changes.

Joe B asking Locker about Ovi's shot and the curve of his stick. :-| :lmao:
-
Leme guess.. April 1st? :raspberry: :snicker:
-
I just saw that Burakovsky went down the tunnel after he blocked that shot and dropped his stick on that last PK.
:praying:
Saw a suggestion he may have hurt his hand. . . again.
-
They just showed a replay of Ovi's first goal and I just wanted to say something.
When Mike Greene was here, he was great at feeding Ovi those shots. When he left, Dylan was just awfull. Awfull. Now I would say he's better than Greenie ever was. Kudos to John Carlson. And of course, he can shoot also. A really great combination.

Sometimes though, I feel like Carlson makes the most idiotic off-target passes that just handcuff Ovi. But yeah I admit he's a pretty good feeder overall.

A better combination would be Dylan playing some fukin $8M a year defense

Hey, I wasn't talking about his overall play, just the feeding of the needle on the PP's. ;)

It wouldn't be a 2019 Caps game without some attempt to give it away!

that was more difficult than need be
It was easier than staying up earlier last night to watch that game. 6.00am here now.
We played much better this game, overall.
-
It wouldn't be a 2019 Caps game without some attempt to give it away!
nope
-
We really needed those two points. Good job getting them.
-
nope
I wavered on whether to include the year or not, but I thought I would be nice since they just won.

I thought that was a better game than I expected. We almost looked like a TEAM sometimes. There were actually some good things in this game.
Why can't we just get our team officially diagnosed with bi-polar and get the right medication and be done with it. ::)
-
Wow. I just heard a stat that the last time we beat the Kings twice in one season was in the 1993-1994 season. It has also been many years since we beat them at home.
-
Venus is sprkling clear and bright. I think that's my cue. Sweet dreams peeps.
Thanks for a fun night.
:hearts:
-
Anytime we win and get two points. As a fan, you’re always happy!
Myself included, of course. Happy yes, but not that impressed!
Good fact is that we beat a bottom feeder team, that we are SUPPOSED to beat!
IMO, our offense showed up, and basically did their job, not greatly, but adequately!
Our DEFENSE however, was on the receiving end of LA having a bad puck luck night! There were a few great saves by Copley, but LA had some great chances, that we were LUCKY did not produce anything!
Generally a little better hustle by MOST of our guys, but STILL heavily plagued with what’s referred to by Rierden as a “lack of detail”!
We have a CONSISTENT problem, across ALL lines, of not reliably being able to bring the puck up, out of our D zone, or clear it out, at the first decent opportunity given!!
I can’t count the number of times, EVERY DAMN GAME, whether we win or lose, when we fail 2, 3 or even 4 times, at bring up, or clearing the puck, from the first time we regain possession, when opponent is in our zone!
This is such a HUGE FACTOR against us, obviously, as it always results in the opponent getting exponentially more opportunities, per each successful blue line entry, for SOG!!
I now make the case for tying this into the “feeling like playing”, or “questionable effort” issue, and ask how much of an effect do you feel this lends itself to the “lack of detail” issue! Which of course is the main cause of our bad puck bring up! Makes sense to me!
You only need 1 or 2 of our already, less than stellar, defensemen, to drop the effort level, just a tad, in a game, to have your ANSWER!!
And if just a few guys, maybe even a completely different set of guys, each game night, decide to drop their effort down, just a small notch, I, AGAIN ask, what results might you see!
Maybe a good PK, or a bad PK? ...Maybe a good offensive effort, maybe NOT?...Maybe an overall good game, or an overall bad game?...Maybe a win that we steal, or one that gets stolen from us?...Maybe the start of what appears to be a turnaround, or what appears to be a hopeless mess?
I say, you would see ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! Coming in no particular order, with no rhyme or reason for what to expect for the very next game!! HEY, wait a minute, that is EXACTLY what we have been seeing for quite some time now, coming from our beloved Caps!
And sadly, OR happily, what can be expected to continue, barring some major attitude change!
What a frickin greasy-ass roller coaster ride from this team!!! I’ll watch and hope, but am dialing down the expectations!!

I'm glad we won but I'm not ready to give the guys a pat on the back for beating a bottom feeder team (not to mention they let that same bottom feeder team get too close for comfort towards the end).
That said, at least they responded after the clunker against the Ducks. Didn't really feel like they played tired. It's just frustrating because this could have been a California road trip sweep had the Caps played their cards right...
Toronto will be more of a gut check for the guys

They need consistency. End of story. That's what's desperately lacking.

Venus is sprkling clear and bright. I think that's my cue. Sweet dreams peeps.
Thanks for a fun night.
:hearts:
Maybe that's got something to do with why Uranus was twitching?
What the heck had Lil so randy last night/this morning?
....
talking about Willie getting it up
Tits being up,
twitching sphincter....
Me thinks Lil likes the late/early games. :hearts:
Or maybe somebody just spiked her bidet with something :snicker:

So I did a little research on the internet...where EVERYTHING is true and nothing is made up (and the Earth is apparently flat) and....
Apparently, Brits have been known to put champagne or sparkling water in their bidet and it causes your
Venus to sparkle and Uranus to twitch. :uh-huh:

They are consistently inconsistent. Does that count?
How about if they consistently underachieve?
Consistently mediocre?
Consistently disappointing?
No, not that one either?
Careful what you wish for, but yes, I agree. Probably why it's so frustrating to be a Caps fan. I mean if they were just plain horrible, you would expect them to be bad, but they have potential so it makes it that much harder when they suck ass - because you know they are capable of better and you wonder if it's just lack of effort, heart, drive, coaching, etc, etc, etc.
Not that I would rather have a team that is just plain horrible.
-
They lost their coach, they lost their best faceoff man, they lost their best penalty killer.. Triple whammy is adding up. Outside the loose defense they've played, if they weren't the worst the in the league at taking penalties, killing penalties and taking faceoffs they'd probably be a dozen points to the good.. Just something to ponder..

Maybe Vancouver will trade us straight up Burka for Beagle. 8)
Price tag is currently the same, and who would you rather have? Although $3 mil is pretty steep for 33-35 year old Beagle.
There should realistically be no comparing a 24 year old Burka with a 32 year old Beagle, but which player would better benefit this Caps team right now? Which guy would you rather have IF the Caps make the playoffs this year?

There isn’t. A 55yo Beagle is better than 24 Bura.
Beagle is simply a superior player in every facet of the game, except marketing to soccer moms who think European names are sexy and cool.
Bura is a one-way player that offers absolutely nothing other than offense. Even then, he got beat out by Varna and has only scraped
together 17 lousy points in 54 games. . .
For a player that’s been and given every opportunity he has only cane up with 17 points.
He’s a bust, that was not only NOT traded three years when we could of got something for him, he was signed for $3mil. . Well be lucky to get a 4th rounder for hin

Beags has got 2 goals and 6 assists in 36 games this year. I know he's not a real goal scorer, but what's with the 36 games? Has he been injured this year or just a scratch for 24 games?

He fractured his arm blocking a shot missing about 6 weeks,

IMO Vrana makes Burakovsky redundant. We already have a young up-and-coming offensive threat, who plays with more energy and speed and skill than Bura. And this is only his 2nd "full" season (first season he played like 20 games). Sorry Bura, but you had your chance and you haven't earned your keep.
This is Bura's 5th season, and Vrana has already pretty much matched Bura's career high in points and surpassed his high for goals with 20 games to go. You might argue that Bura hasn't spent as much time as Vrana in the top 6, but honestly you earn those spots, and Bura clearly hasn't while Vrana has. Bura is just a $3 million black hole for this team. His play is soft and uninspired. Can't battle, just loses the puck all the time, and isn't providing the type of punch you'd want from a 1st round draft pick. Bura's first two seasons were more promising, since he was that young guy with potential and put together some decent production in those seasons, with the expectation that he'd only improve. Since then we've seen no growth, and in fact mostly just a decline in play. Why he hasn't been shipped off earlier is beyond me.
With regards to Beagle, I agree he's the better fit for this team. His work ethic, faceoffs, PK, overall defensive acumen, etc are much more beneficial to our team than Bura's charmin soft ineffective play. That said, don't think I'd straight up trade Bura for Beagle (Bura has "change of scenery upside" and is younger, and I think another team would pay extra for that over a 33 year old that's pretty much reached his ceiling). Beagle + some other pieces for Bura? Yeah maybe, but I'd still be wary of taking on a $3 million a year cap hit through Beagle's age-37 season. Again, not saying I wouldn't prefer Beagle over Bura, just want to be conscious of salary/contract and trade return.

Zero,
I was suggesting only in Jest at first that we trade Burka straight up for Beags. IMO your are 100% correct that Beags has reached his ceiling and I fully expect decline in his play. What is frighteningly sad is that I WOULD take Beags over Burka on THIS team right now for this season at even money. I don't think Beags is worth 3 mil at this point in his career, and I wouldn't want to be stuck with his salary the next two seasons. You are spot on that Burka is a black hole of $3 mil. It was almost a joke suggesting the even swap because Beags was an undrafted 4th liner who is 32 years old, yet he would do more for this team than Burka; a 24 year old 1st round pick.
Burka has had way too many chances to prove himself and Vranna's improvement has indeed made Burka even more of a waste of time. Caps waited too long to just dump Burka, so now we will get virtually nothing for him.
At this point I don't know what to do with him. Will ANYONE trade for him? I mean, if you were interested, why not just wait till next year and pick him up for free? Caps won't be able to resign him due to cap space. I guess some team who WILL be making the playoffs and have the cash and some minor worthless trade bait could go out on a limb and pick him up for cheap and then not resign him if he (continues) to flop.

Ah gotcha, and I agree and appreciate the input. That's what I like about these boards (aside from having a place to vent about how shitty the Caps are lol) - great back and forth with other fans. I'd really love us to get rid of Bura but yeah who knows who would have interest and what they'd be willing to give up.

The only takers I can see would be a rebuilding team with plenty of cap space, and even that will be tricky.
The time for using Bura as an asset has long passed. Chances are there will be no more deals, and GMBetaMale will try to get one of the picks he traded for Haglin back by trading Bura to anyone

I'd take a 4th round pick in the Bantem league for Burka :snicker:
