Well....I looked at this surgery a little closer and Alta is right. At age 34, Nicky is basically done. I didn't realize that as a realistic near certainty.
At best, it's a year recovery period so he's out all of next season.....which makes him 35 coming off a major surgery most pro athletes won't recover from. I think Nicky is done. Sad, but probably good for the Caps at this point.
That's 9.2 million salary you can spend (while Backy is on LTIR), and let's face it....that's probably forever.
You could get a serious player for 9.2 mil with some change for help elsewhere. We are in desperate need of a top line center.
I don't think McMichael is ready to cut it at 2C
Filip Forsberg is UFA, as is Johhny Gudreau. I don't foresee either in a Caps uniform, but WTF knows. And Forsberg is a LW as is Gudreau, and we really need a center
Maybe it's time to trade John Q Norris as well and have a whopping $22.25mil in salary cap to spend (with Nicky and Wilson on LTIR) and we can really make a difference in the near future.
Never happen I know, but we definitely need a 2C (or 1C)

Kadri - Avs (31) (meh, never really liked him, but I doubt I'd like Dale Hunter if he weren't a Cap)
Vincent Trocheck (28) - Canes (now he seems a good fit to me - or at least what we need; two-way Center who could play 2C)
Malkin - Hens (35) - NO FUCKING WAY!!!
Andrew Cop (27)- Rags
Ryon Strome (28)- Rags

If it were up to me, I’d be talking to Trochek and/or Strome. The only other talent on that list that I’d be interested in is Kadri, but I still think he’s going to make another dumb hit at the wrong time for the team and get a 10 game vacation right as the playoffs start.

I read a snippet somewhere that Strome wants 5+ mill per year and Rags can't afford both Strome and Cop so Rags may be leaning towards signing Cop instead at less money.
$5m for a real 2C is not horrible. Question is, would Strome (or any others) want to play in DC?
