I thought the teams were required to leave too many players exposed for Las Vegas. Obviously, given their current record the Golden Knights got to cherry pick from too many great players. There were plenty of teams with more than 4 good defensemen for them to pick from and do well. Limiting protection to 3 Defensemen was pretty messed up IMO. This was only for one expansion team. The teams were allowed to protect less players than in the previous expansion draft which was for two expansion teams. It will be pretty messed up if LVGK win the cup this year.

Heh, it would of been pretty damn cool if teams could adjust their protected list after each pick, . .
well if any GM could have still planned it to work to his advantage, it’s GMGM.
I’ve said this before, but the ownership in Vegas is letting GMGM do his own thing and reaping the rewards.
I mean here’s a team with out a single bonafide superstar, that’s in the toughest division, and is a legitimate Cup contender in their first year, and will only get better. That isn’t just because the new expansion draft rules, that’s because they got the perfect GM to burn the league with it
Maacoshark:
We could have protected 4 dmen but then we could only protect 4 forwards. It sounds like thats what DC was thinking we should have done. I dont disagree. I think new would have lost Eller, Johansson or Burakovsky. I could have lived with that. We lost Johansson anyway.
Oh ArJunaz, I know you dont care for Carlson but he is head and shoulders our best dman. Protecting Schmidt over Carlson is preposterous. You can't even say for Cap reasons because 3 Caps dmen make more than he does. I know you dont care for the guy but let's try to be realistic.

Pretty much, however. . . leaving Carlson unprotected may have worked for us.
GMGM didn’t just pick players, he picked contracts, so he could very well have not picked him. I’m not talking about the player himself, but his contract for an expansion team. We all know Carlson will be getting a payday, and had he had the year he had had here, resigning him would have been tough for GMGM considering the cap situation he’ll have coming up.
So while almost no one would say Schmidt is better than Carlson in Carlson’s role. His contract, and price tag makes him a far better choice for GMGM as he gets an upper tier Dman for far less than Carlson’s.
Maacoshark:
If Carlson was available I am positive they would have taken him. If the contract was a problem they would have drafted him just to trade him.

I would not put that past GMGM, nor am I positively be he would of, or the rules for trading the expansion picks.
I did stumble across this old article though, LA did what I was suggesting and expose high dollar players and protecting value players. . . and low and behold, look who the number one unprotected player was: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/2017/6/17/15825002/nhl-expansion-draft-unprotected-players-2017-vegas-golden-knights
