Many of us knew that leaving him unprotected was a mistake. GMBM really screwed up on that one. I knew Schmidt was a future star just a few months into his time with the Caps. They could have probably kept him without taking a big cap hit too. I've missed him for sure.

Like 90% of things, GMBetaMale beyond screwed this up. Considering protected MoJo, who he had to trade because he was bullied to overpay the Euros, then only got a third for him. Also throw in Bura who he not only overplayed, but who’s top-shelf talent, has totaled 4 goals this year.
All while loosing a quality D and going into the season with a DCotps in shambles.
This was enough for him to be canned at almost any other team

No one is answering who we should have left exposed instead of Schmidt. We protected 3 dmen and 7 forwards and Schmidt was our 4th dman. I may have exposed Niskanen. Vegas might not have taken him and if they did we would have dumped a big salary. Another option would have been to protect 4 dmen and 4 forwards. We might have lost a key forward but we have still had Schmidt and we might have been able to keep Johansson as well. Either way we were going to lose a pretty good player. Other teams had the same problems. The Panthers decided to protect 4 dmen and they ended up leaving a 30 goal scorer exposed. Not sure what they were thinking. In the end the rules for the expansion draft cost quite a few teams and help build the Knights into what they are. Pretty easy Pickens for the expansion team

Mojo and Eller, protecting Beagle and Schmidt.
If GMGM took either Mojo or Eller we save cap money and still keep a center. Even then we could add depth at forward via UFA (if they aren’t sent to Hershey), and then there’s enough forwards in Hershey to bring up and down so you don’t hurt your DCorps that already is hurting.

I wanted Schmidt protected over Carlson, but IMO we should have been allowed to protect 4 defensemen. I was a huge Schmidt fan from very early on and was the first on the forum to proclaim he was a future star.
I thought the teams were required to leave too many players exposed for Las Vegas. Obviously, given their current record the Golden Knights got to cherry pick from too many great players. There were plenty of teams with more than 4 good defensemen for them to pick from and do well. Limiting protection to 3 Defensemen was pretty messed up IMO. This was only for one expansion team. The teams were allowed to protect less players than in the previous expansion draft which was for two expansion teams. It will be pretty messed up if LVGK win the cup this year.
