Hmm ..... we took four, count 'em, FOUR, penalties in the last 10 minutes of the game -- and got the only two goals scored in that time.  That has to be something that doesn't happen often.

Yup!  Sloppy game in a few ways, but we still took home the prize. Next four games: Bruins, Jackets, Canes, Islanders.  Better clean it up for those.

apparently the Caps can't afford a microphone for the reporters to use in the post game, it would be nice to be able to hear the questions that Reirdon is answering

I've thought about this in the past. IMO it's the reporter's job to capture the audio/video. Also, I think it would be rather noisy to use anything but a directional mic to try and pickup the various speakers in the room and it would again fall upon the reporting crew to aim this. They would likely still miss the beginning of each question until they determine who to point to.

Even IF the teams provided a microphone you would then have to deal with the logistics of getting that audio to each reporter and editing your captured audio to include it.  A big complicated mess for sure.  It is surprising that Comcast doesn't at least try to capture this for their shows. I'm not sure how many reporters are in that area, but I expect it could be a lot.

I notice a lot of phones are used to record these interviews, though some use TASCAM recorders and the like. Maybe someone could write an app for doing this.  I bet you could write an app that captures a single mic and distributes it to all those nearby using the app.  Someone could be stationed beside the interviewee tasked to aim at the mic appropriately and the app would coincidentally merge the audio with each of the receivers. I'll bet the media would pay for something like that.  I know my TASCAM DR-40 recorder could record two inputs onto separate tracks at once and even merge them later if you want. It cost less than $200.

That was a pleasant surprise! PK was bomb!! Too many fucking penalties, but last year we probably lose that one on special teams.. Holts was in Beastmode tonight!

Exactly, Mick!
We almost certainly would’ve lost, messing around like that, in last half of 3rd P, with all those penalties, ADD in also, Tampas #1 PP!!
Also glad to see Gudas finally get on the board. He needed and deserves it! As you pointed out, Mick, Gudas has scored before Hagelin!

You can bet that as we are closing in on the mid-season mark, any starting 3rd, or 4th line, forwards or centers, NHL wide, especially if they’re on one of the top teams in the league, will be deeply feeling the heat, and pressure, if they haven’t scored a goal yet this season!!
Hagelin has ZERO goals, so far this year, but although he’s had a few good post hits, and narrow misses, his professionalism and play ethic may not be showing it, but you know he’s feeling it inside!
 Anybody would!

The reason I mention it, is to relate that point to our PK!!
The PK did save the game for us, enduring a relatively long 5 on 3, and delivering an overall stellar performance, against the leagues best PP!  Braden Holtby was also very smooth, and relaxed, in the crease tonight!
Stand outs on our PK this evening, well, you’d have to mention just about everybody!  Hagelin was incredible, as was Siegenthaler, and Dowd amongst others!

I believe this is why Hagelin will remain on the third line with Eller, most likely, despite his production slump, as in addition to his elite PK skills, he just brings so much disruption to the opponents overall puck flow when he’s on the ice!

Eller and Hags dedication to non-stop hustle, make the nominal speed of Panik, appear slower and less active. I’m not so sure that he is any slower, but when I single him out to watch, sometimes, he does have a little bit of a puck watching, and “stone legs”, issue, similar to Chandler Stevenson’s issue.
As I said before, I’d rather see Boyd in there than Panik!

Additional good observations; Can’t believe how much Seigenthaler has stepped up his ENTIRE defensive skillset!!  He controls pucks better, is more physical, especially on the boards, is making WAY BETTER hockey IQ decisions with passing, and defending, and has SUPER increased his reliability in bringing up the puck/ getting it out of our zone!  Hell… He even showed us a speedy, but controlled slap shot, for a goal the other night!!    Go on with your bad ass self, Ziggy!!!👍👍

Damn right AJ, and good point Alta!
At least when the games are at home, Comcast could spring for ONE microphone!!!
At least for the room where the coaches press conference is! I’ve seen the room and it’s not that large at all.

All that Comcast would have to do, is to employ a good quality Omni-directional, or cardioid, recording mic, like a Neuman, or Sennheiser, etc.

These low-noise, high-sensitivity mics, can be used in a single, or stereo, (two mics), overhead, application, in the same way they record a large chorus!  They are used to get the entire ambient atmosphere of all the collective voices!

No, it will not be anything close to recording quality, but this is known in advance, and is simply for the purposes of recording the ambient speaking atmosphere of the reporters!  It’s actually one of the easier things to pull off in audio recording, because you’re not having to meet stringent parameters of equalization, and the like!

The only other thing that I think might be a reason why they DON’T do it, as a general service to their broadcast, is if somehow the individual reporter has some kind of LEGAL CLAIM to his individual question, for royalty, reputation, or copyright purposes or something!   Who knows??

But it’s been going on for years, and it’s bullshit!!

I actually caught the third period of this game .
I'm visiting inlaws down in Sunny FLA for Christmas.
our drive down which should be about 12 hours turned into 15+.  Left at 3:30 am and got here around 6:45pm  :O=
Most of the traffic problem was in South Carolina.
And of course, its 70 degrees, but 100% chance of rain all day today and tomorrow

Nice to see the Caps beat the Bolts.

Good thing this team picked up some good PK guys cause we sure do get enough penalties.  Or PK last year was pretty weak.
I know Panik and Hags are apparently scoring disabled, but need them on the PK. Really need your third line guys to be PK guys - don't want to have to rely on and wear down your top line guys killing penalties (Like backy and willy).  Plus, as many penalties as the Caps are....awarded, all the 3/4 line guys on the PK gives our top line guys some rest - so they can be extra fresh to score!  8)

Hags did beat the goalie on the penalty shot, but he caught the cross bar.
And im pretty sure the 2nd? delay of game penalty went off the Tampa stick

Go Caps

and I apparently missed the whole third page of posts so I repeated alot of what others had said already (great minds and all)

Rush, why are you surprised at Siegenthaler's drastic improvement.  His entire NHL career to date consists of 63 games; he's still well within "his rookie season."   It isn't fair to expect guys like him to come into the league as finished products.  If nothing else, it takes a certain amount of time to acclimate oneself to the faster tempo of the NHL.  And it's a commonly understood that defensemen take more time to adjust than forwards.

Not every promising defensive prospect turns out like Bowey.

Hey Black! Good to hear from you.

I agree with you that we should still view Ziggy as a rookie!👍

When I first read your post, I was asking myself, “What did I write in my comments about Ziggy, that made me sound as if I was SURPRISED?”  and also, “How am I coming off as though I expect rookies to come into the league, as finished products?”

So I went back and reviewed my former post. I can see, now, how it may come off as me, sounding surprised, because I start with the phrase, “Can’t believe”. that, COULD, come off as sounding surprised!

For the sake of clarity, Black, I’m not actually surprised. More accurately would be the word, AMAZED, and was the idea I was trying to convey! AMAZED, and HAPPY, at how quickly, and comprehensively he has progressed, relative to the law of averages!

I also agree with your contrast with Bowey!👍

For clarity again, however, I absolutely DO NOT expect new guys, coming into the NHL, to enter into the game as, “finished products”!  Frankly, Black, I don’t know where you got that one from.

On the contrary, I usually try, purposely, in fact, to NOT give in to expectations when new guys come into the league!
Every year, before the NHL season starts, the airwaves are full of sports casters that go on endlessly, bloviating about the potential, both up and down, for the new prospects coming into the league. I rarely watch them, as over the years, I’ve come to find that these guys don’t know any better, really, than the average hockey fan, as both groups seem to have about the same rate of accuracy, in their predictions....ABOUT 50/50!!😂🤣 or even WORSE!

Because of this, I generally prefer not to have any expectations, but simply to observe with my own eyes, as those who are successful, will float to the top, generally beginning to attract attention to themselves, by their excellent play on the ice!
All the while, the overwhelming majority of the other newcomers, will eventually sink into oblivion, with the rest of those who can’t make the cut! In other words, I adopt a more, wait and see approach, along the lines of the famous phrase, “what will be will be”!.....AFTER THAT, I may start to form a few expectations on a player!

By not giving in, to forming expectations, on the new guys, in advance of proven performance, I find this a very efficient process for the brain, when trying to sort out the pertinent issues of all things NHL hockey! At least, it works for me, personally!

Finally, Black, I also agree with you that defensemen, generally take a longer time to mature, than offensemen!

Either way it’s good to know that we both enjoy having Ziggy back there, boosting our defensive capabilities!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Black!

I have been impressed with Ziggy going back to last year.  I think he is a top 4 D on most teams. Very poised and hopefully he still has to fill out a bit and can be more physical in years to come.  I heard the guys on the NHL radio channel talking about the Caps and how solid they were, but that they might be looking to add a Dman like Greene on NJ - however they pointed out how well Ziggy had played.

Panik is another story.  I don't mind if he is in a drought, but I don't see the desire and effort. A lot of times, he just seems to be coasting and not really pressing very hard.  If that is going to be the case, I'll take Boyd all day long.

Totally with you on Panik, Beags!
From the history of our posts, I’d say that we both tend to prioritize both desire, and effort, as an important part of the attitude and character in a given player!

So many times, NHL fans are familiar with the scenario of an average skater, of an appreciably lower skill set, actually raising his overall value to the team, when his base talent level is accompanied by an “all in”, great attitude!!

Conversely, we see, also, the otherwise, exceptionally gifted player, who spends an eternity, throughout his career, in frustrating mediocrity, never quite able to realize his potential, for a variety of reasons,  The majority of which can be traced back to attitude and character issues!
 Happens all the time!

Like I said earlier, if you’ve got Eller, and Hagelin, as your two line mates, you’re already put against a hyper-hustle backdrop, that will tend to magnify the view, on any lesser effort issues within that line,  so you better keep the gas on!   I believe Boyd keeps the better pace with that line, and Panik may help to stymie the line a bit, actually!

 Here’s to Hagelin getting a goal before 2020! 😁
It’ll do wonders for his confidence!
