I totally agree. It's only October and they look much better than any recent October I can recall.  Better even than their current record.

Can’t say enough about the PK, it basically won the game for us.  What a difference from last season.  Also we have improved on our faceoffs, especially Kuzy.  First line finally got it going in the third period, they did not look good the first two periods.

What surprised me a bit was the defense utilization.


I thought when Kempny returned that he would be eased into the lineup and eventually take the place of Siegenthaler as Carlson's partner, which would bump Sieg down to the 3rd pair, where I thought at this stage of his development would be a more appropriate place for him.


Yesterday Kempny's time bumped up from 14+ minutes his first game to 19+ minutes -- but Siegenthaler still played over 21 minutes!!  The loser in this seems to be Orlov, and he has NOT gotten off to a good start this season.   Yes, Sieg has made some mistakes and seems slow to react sometimes, but you have to remember he's played as Carlson's partner in large part during Kempny's absence, which means by default he has had to play against the top opposing lines.  He has held his own, which is a great development for the defensive depth.


The contrast with Bowey is marked.  Bowey was drafted #53, Sieg #57.  Both thought of in sort of a similar fashion as NHL potential, though they are different players.  But Bowey never really developed as the Caps wanted, while early returns suggest the outcome might be much, much different for Siegenthaler.

I watched both weekend games late (on delay).  Caps looked good against the Rags, better than the score as several others have said.  Holtby was certainly better.

THe Hawks game, Caps really did not look like they were all in it, but then picked up the pace.  I thought for sure I would witness another third period collapse, especially after they tied it.  Glad to see the Caps show some fight, and win this.

Anytime you score a PPG, AND a SHG in a game, you should win it.  THe SHG is tough to overcome.  Caps penalty kill saved them this game.

I have to say, I liked most of the off-season acquisitions on paper when they were made, and so far, these guys are performing better than I expected.  They certainly have bolstered some glaring weaknesses we had last year (PK, and overall toughness)  I really had no real idea of these guys' play or abilities (other than Gudas), but did like the type of character and toughness the Caps went after.  Panik hasn't done all that much, but Hathaway looks great, Gudas is looking good, Leipsic way better than expected, and Hags looks good on the PK and has started to show some offensive punch too.  The season is only just begun, and time will tell, but the GM is looking pretty good with these moves.  I know these were forced due to cap issues, but moving Nisky and bringing these guys in is looking pretty good.  If the D (especially the youngins) can hold up, this team is looking pretty solid.

I really wonder what the caps had planned for Stephenson and Djoos.  I know arbitration kind of screwed the Caps on both guys, and the smaller than expected cap put them in a bind, but why the heck are they carrying Djoos?  I wonder if they were just hedging to see how Kempney recovery went.

ANyway, nice to see the PK looking better and the team having a little more grit this year.  Everything does look better after a win though, but I'll take it.

Oh yeah, and our Norris candidate is looking damn good this year.  I always have (and probably always will) give Johhny Q a lot of grief about his marshmallow play, but he has looked good this year.  Surprised we haven't heard the Norris word mentioned in every breath from Locker so far.
