Exactly!  We have hardly used our physicality this entire season. Absolutely stupid. You're right, that's how you make space for yourself with teams like this. Make them scared and looking over their shoulders.

Good teams won't let us waltz into the O zone and dance with the puck which is all 92 wants to do.  Frankly, 19 is playing as soft as a koala bear as well.  And Eller.  Totally ineffective.  When we are good we are down low cycling the puck and winning the zone time game.  We can't play the wide open style they are hoping to play.  We get broken down for odd-man rushes all night long.  Leave that shit to TOR and BUF and just play fucking hockey.  Look what Trotz has done with an average talent Islander team.  They got rid of their one really skilled player in Tavares and look how the system works.  Rierden doesn't have the confidence of the players or in himself to REQUIRE them to play that way.  This is what happens with a first year coach who doesn't have the stones or the backing of management to step on the guys who don't play the right way.

Er.  Not with this style of play.

I disagree, Lil.  I don't think they lacked effort tonight.  I think they didn't have a clue how to break down the Islanders trap and clogging the neutral zone.  Players play and coaches coach, but if the coaches aren't telling the players the strategies to break the other team down, all the effort in the world won't make a difference.  If they were told what to do and didn't, that's on them, but I saw too many frustrated faces to think this was failure to execute the game plan given.  This coaching staff is not getting it done from where I'm sitting.

Oshie - no show.
Backstrom - no show.
Kuzy - no show.

Until that ends, we keep losing.

I think Oshie brings it every night.  He worked hard.  I agree on Backstrom and Kuzy.  Kuzy has sucked since his concussion.  I think Eller is god-awful this season, and they are getting nothing from DSP.  Orlov is horrid and I don't have the same love for Siegenthaler that Locker does.  Niskanen looks like he's still injured (at least I hope so cuz if this is the new normal we are in real trouble) and Orpik is, well, 1 year older.  It's not pretty right now, but they still are the defending champs so if the coaching staff can get their collective head out of their collective asses, they still have a shot to do something this year.

I don't know why we don't start benching guys.  If I am Reirdon, I sent a message to this team that I am in charge and I bench Backstrom.  Can you imagine the reaction to that? Sit him, tell him to quit coasting, quit looking for the perfect pass and shoot the damn puck!

Same thing for Kuzy. One goal in the last 20 games!

Start paying these guys for goals, not passes.

Well said. I'm getting real tired of the highlight reel dangling attempts by Kuzy and others. And yeah, good coaches can take average teams and make them good. TR is taking a team that's pretty damn good on paper and making them sub-par...

Not very impressed. When we struggled early on in the season, I thought "just a period of adjusting to a new coach" so I gave the Caps some slack. When we started going on a winning streak, I thought "okay TR got the team in gear now great." Looks like I was wrong, and that was just Ovi being a beast that was masking the issues of the team overall...

Spot on.  2 or 3 a night from Ovi can make anybody look good.  The problem is that TR came in under the "all he has to do is continue what BT was doing" mantra.  But coaching in the NHL is not as easy as it looks.  It's a fast game and making in-game changes is an art not so easily learned when you are top dog.  Juggling the lines is easy, but changing the style of play, and making players commit to it, is a whole different animal.  He's going to have to learn on the fly and the vets on this team need to step up and help.

Back from the game.  Caps played ..... sort of mediocre.  But the Islanders played a typical, totally defensive style road game.  The real issue is that the Caps AREN'T much different than they were under Trotz, so he and the Islanders know exactly how to defend against what the Caps are doing.  This loss was on the offense; the Caps didn't get more than 2 or 3 good looks all night.  Nobody looked effective at all.  The Isles simply took away time and space and the Caps had no answer.

Burakovsky is in a hopeless situation.  On Eller's line, he has no one to get him the puck, and once again tonight he spent virtually his entire time in the offensive zone mucking along the boards, because Eller and Connolly weren't going to do it.  He maybe handled the puck above the goal line twice during the game.  But the top 2 lines did nothing tonight, so why rail about the 3rd line, I guess?  They were simply in the same boat.

Caps and Islanders both played, conservative, ho-hum, hockey, for 2 whole periods! Sort of cautiously, and medium-speed, boringly, taking each other’s pulse for 40 minutes.

Islanders played a better possession game throughout, and it eventually paid off, with the first goal
of the game, in the 3rd P. on a great deflection. THAT was when the Caps should have become energized. We did NOT! The Islanders DID, and scored fairly quickly AGAIN!
THEN, it seemed that SOME of our boys, tried to find the next level, but it was too late!

When the Caps have played a careless stretch, in the past, where they get virtually blown out, two games in a row, with low energy and motivation, they have usually responded with a dominant game, and high energy! Prior to the Islanders game, not only were the last two games, really bad, but they’ve not had an obviously dominant win in several weeks!  This is my biggest concern, right now with the team!

Before, we could at least get partially “reassured”, by them having an absolutely stellar game, in the middle of some of those crappy play, game stretches! We were left angry when they played below their level, but they would “bring it” after a few bad games, win a few in a row, and we at least knew that
“THEY COULD” when they wanted to!

It’s still early, but the questioning of whether they’re still capable, is starting to rear its head a bit, as we keep losing, In The Manner, that we do!
I haven’t seen hungry-type EFFORT in a while now, except for a small time at the end of tonight’s game! THAT AINT GOOD AT ALL!! Considering our last two games just prior!

The Coach has to be on the pulse of this team, and must make corrections. Even more, he must find a way to MOTIVATE.
They have looked so flat and dull for a few weeks now!
I’d like to hope they could get something together before the All-Star break!  But I’ll be honest, they’ve  got two games left before the break, and I’m not optimistic. Right now they seem lost!!
Nisky, Carlson, and Orlov are playing just terrible. Niskys passes are the worst I’ve seen from him, in maybe ever! Carly’s D is pathetically, but TYPICALLY unenergetic, and  practically useless! And Orlovs defensive, real time decisions, are abhorrent!  Right now it’s tough to watch! Kuzy had a bit more drive in his O game tonight, but his D and overall attitude has looked lazy and non caring!
Ok nuff said, I’m pissing myself off now!
Still willing to be patient, but DAMN BOYS, COME ON!!!

Hey Black.
Good game assessment in the 1st paragraph of your post!  Both teams know each other well. Kind of a chess game, a little bit, IMO.
And you’re right, Caps had NO answer for it!

2nd paragraph on Bura’s hopeless situation, I do see your point, but dont think the Eller/Connolly line  is the main culprit in Bura’s hopeless situation! Maybe somewhat, but I see a lot of chicken b4 egg stuff that, at least makes it a hard call. Here’s my thinking.

I’m known to be an Eller fan, generally, but I will be the first to admit that HIS game is solidly suffering right now, at least in production.  He can’t seem to hit the broad side of a barn lately.
Connolly is cold as well, and although he will make the occasional AWESOME pass for an assist, or at least a good chance, he tends to favor using the element of surprise and take quick, unexpected SOG’s that sometimes work, sometimes don’t.
Saying they (Eller/Connelly), aren’t able to get Bura the puck often enough, may have some merit, but let’s reciprocal the thing as well! I don’t see Bura getting the puck to Eller or Connelly much either, at least not effectively. How many times could we say that Eller or Connolly were robbed of an opportunity to get the puck, when Bura brings it over the blue line, and loses possession before there is even a conversation about getting someone the puck! When trapped on the boards, he gives the puck up very frequently, also.
Yes, it happens to Connolly and Eller too sometimes, when entering the zone, but my eye test just thinks maybe a little less often than to Bura.

Bura has had SOG opportunities in both of our most recent losses. One, tonight, right at the doorstep, although it happened very quickly, he missed. Bura DOES possess the gifted talent to make that one! Hes had several decent chances over the last two games. Like the rest of our anemic offense, of late, he didn’t convert ANYTHING. Same with Eller and Connolly. Zippo!  BUT... Bura is in a position with the team, where his need to convert is beyond critical mass!! 20 and 10 are not!

Eller remains because he brings other varied talent options, to the team, (PK, PP etc)!
All skaters, on that third line, in a perfect world, should share “getting the puck to each other”, responsibilities equally between themselves.
It never goes that way perfectly on any line, except in theory! But certainly the case can easily be made that Bura’s play has robbed HIS linemates of opportunities to get the puck, as well, to them! Furthermore, with Bura’s history and status, what could be sensibly said to justify an EMPHASIS to get the puck to Bura more often?? He will then SURELY score?? I wouldn’t take that bet, my friend, given the good number of 1st and 2nd line opportunities he’s been afforded both this season and prior!

To propose that Bura, deserves, or has earned, the right, for Rierden to commit practice time and resources, to find, or create, or switch him, to a line that will get him the puck more often, is IMO, to give an unjustifiable opportunity , to an unpredictable, at best, goal scorer, who adds only one dimension to this Caps team, ...IF....he even plays well!
Additionally, it undermines the performances of those few young forwards who HAVE mostly taken advantage of their opportunities! (Let’s still remember that no one has played that well, most recently), LOL!

Sorry if my opinion seemed to grow stronger as I was typing, Black!  That happens to me sometimes as I post! 😊
I agree overwhelmingly with most of your opinions here, and the ones I don’t, still command my respect!

Problem is they're not winning the games they should be winning, now. And they're losing on home ice, leadership is lacking, etc.. Reirden about to find out if he's head coach material or just a glorified assistant.  8-10 games from now we'll know if they're contenders or pretenders, with their current make up.

While the coaching advantage and history of them and the franchise is paramount.  They run a system and play a style that is designed to beat the system and style that we run, and when executed correctly, like NYI did last night, no amount of “high end skil” in a pond-hockey system will beat it, (without help from the zebras).

This leaves Reidon needing to come up with adjustments, AND personnel executing theses adjustments flawlessly on a regular basis, and those adjustments fooling the other coach’s and players.  Call me pessimistic. but I’m not to confident about that right now.

But, hats off to Trotz, this NYI team should be the last team anyone wants to face in the playoffs

I’m guessing this is as close to benching as it will get for a few players....

"We're just not feeling it" quotes Niskannen.   :lmao:

How the F are you not feeling the nightly Ass-Fu#@ing you are taking as of late?

Vrana - Eller - Wilson on line 2.  Well, okay, Willy and Vranna can carry that line.
Ovi - Backy - Oshie on L1 - I get it, but Backy has been in a kind of a funk
Bura - Kuzy - Connolly.    .  What the hell is this line supposed to do?  I mean sure it's punishment for Kuzy (who well deserves it) but all they gonna do is provide an EASY line to play against.

WHY THE FUCK won't they SIT Bura?  M-A-Y-B-E Kuzy can help dish him the puck, but then WHAT? - Bura will just hand it over to the first opponent in his grille.

I'd rather they scratch Bura AND Kuzy AND DSP and STEPHENSON and play Jaskin and Boyd, and ANYONE else who can show some FUCKING WILL.

An honest, but crappy thing to say, from Nisky!
Good info though, Rich!

Kuzy, with all his incredible skills, seems a kind of peculiar person, to me.
He’s often expressed his disdain for our home media, and has spoken of the “virtues”, of not being a selfish player,  and how he has trouble sometimes, with being told by his coaches to shoot more, when he chimes back to them, about his dad taught him to not be selfish with the puck. Trotz would talk about Kuzy’s mentality being “engrained” with this “team play” thing, attempting to explain why he wouldn’t shoot!! (Remember this issue)?

I’ve always thought that Kuzy has sort of reluctantly gone along with it, but doesn’t like it! I think that because he possesses such a supercharged skill set, it can make him a little obstinate, sometimes!

This leads me to associate how he seems to appear on the ice. I think he gets bored easily, of the regular, basic, keep it simple type hockey! He appears disinterested, and not very excited, at all, when skating around the ice. He’s also one of those players who throws their arms up, when they think the ref should have called a penalty!! Something I hate to see from players these days, as their “up in arms” reaction usually causes them to slow down, while becoming distracted from the play that is STILL GOING ON,  while they bother to complain!! It’s selfish to me!

Kuzy may have an attitude problem!!   I want to reiterate this is just an educated guess on my part, with very little actual evidence to go on!  But it does seem to fit nicely with how he appears on ice, sometimes!  It’s also getting a little OLD!

They way the games get called, I don't mind the players complaining to the refs. It works for Syndey  :snicker:

But it's nice to see the coach complain about it too. That's the one thing I couldn't stand about Trotz, he barely says a word about bad calls/non calls. If you don't count that eye twitch.
