Ovi not going to the All Star Game

Just read that Ovi was voted Captain for the Metropolitan Division, but has taken the one game hit and declined.
He's said it's to help recover......... not being as young etc..

Someone mentioned, or at least alluded to that they thought Ovi was a little dinged up recently.
If the latter is the case, then I completely understand and I think that's the most responsible thing to do.  It will be a real shame not to see him.  He is by FAR the biggest draw for them.  He is always reticent about declaring his injuries.  I suppose he knows he will be targetted, so waon't claim, or declare the specific injury - if any - because of that.

What are your thoughts?

This year the all star game coincides with the Caps bye week. The bye week was put in to give the players a break to recoup from any minor injures before the final push for the post season. When butmann agreed to this bye week crap it had to have dawned on him that a player actually needed the bye week because of an actual injury. If OV is forced to serve a one game suspension because of the leagues ineptitude in scheduling then it's time to start a replace butmann campaign. Which should be done anyway, he's been in charge for almost 25 years.


Since this will be the second time OV has decided to skip the all star game and served the 1 game suspension last time, I have no doubt the league will deem it necessary to "punish" him again.

     I have no problem with Ovi skipping the all-star game. The game is a disgrace anyway. A one game suspension for skipping the all-star game is ridiculous. They should just scrap the game.

You guys are spelling "money" wrong.. Ovi's taking money out of their pocket, so they obviously MUST PUNISH HIM!!!  Wish all 3 would flip em' the bird.. Haven't watched an all star game (completely) for 3-4 years anyway.. Popularity contest where your reward is you could get hurt. No thanks!

The only All Star game in the past 20years worth a damn was the John Scott game, which is why no one cares or wants play in it.

All star game voting is nothing more than a popularity contest and a measure of a given teams fan base. Voting 20 times a day per computer is a damn joke. Every home these days has about 8 computers. I have; IPhone, IPod, IPad, PS3, 3 smart tv’s, laptop,. Houses with kids will have at least 5 more. Every one of those is capable of having its own IP address, and there are fans with no life that do vote the daily max on each of those computers. That’s just stupid, and a product of the butmann tenure.

Could care less that Ovie isn't there because I don't watch that charade and I'd rather him rest up for a Cup run anyway.

Saw on RMNB there's a push to get Backstrom in as "the last man in" fan vote.  I'd rather he didn't go as well. 

Let 'em both skip the All-Star game and be off from after the Toronto game on 1/23 and not come back until the 2/3 game against Boston.  That's a nice break for two of our aging superstars.

I always felt that the all-star game in any sport was just a pointless money grabbing charade. IMO you should simply name the league all-stars and be done with it. FFS, I have yet to watch any all-star game where the players actually played to win, and who can blame them. It's meaningless!  Why bother?

So Ovie will get a longer rest, including the additional rest of a one game suspension.  Good for him.

Good guestion.  It was 1982 I believe when the Caps hosted it.  It seems like we should be due.
