No supplemental discipline for Wilson, so that is good news and the right decision.

I certainly hope that is true because the refs definitely got it wrong.  I'm not a conspiracy guy, but they "decided" it was a match penalty hit to the head after the refs huddled up.  If they didn't truly see it then how do you make that call?  If they did truly see it then how do you make that call?
Have they been instructed to call as much as possible at any given opportunity against Willie for payback.  Why would the league want to target him.  He could be a super NHL poster child....player who erred in his ways, got caught, took the punishment, changed his game as instructed and now is blossoming into a super star.  Instead they decide they want to be petty children and ruin a guys career?  Think what this bad call by the ref could cost Willy.  Willy did exactly as he has been instructed - make effort to avoid contact with the head.

Problem is even if the league decides no supplemental, doesn't the penalty call still stand?  Doesn't this have an impact with the call on your record....like later in the year if you receive another match penalty?

I know I'm a homer and more of an old school hockey kind of guy, but IMO Wilson did not try and hit the guy.  He DID try and minimize the contact.  He certainly did not target the guy.

I love Alan May's comment....in this league you might as well get rid of the equipment, the sticks, the puck.....

I will be amazed if the league does the right thing on this.  Can the rescind the match penalty call?  THis would be a wonderful opportunity for the NHL to recover some validity by doing the proper thing for Wilson, a guy they obviously have it out for.

What?  Did Willy sleep with Bettman's daughter or something?  OH!  SHIT!  I know what it was....Willy slept with Crosby's wife, didn't he?  :uh-huh:

I watched the game late so I could not comment during, but I expected a firestorm of activity on these boards this morning about the Willy penalty.

Geez...it's like you people have lives to live on Saturday or something.

Where did you here this?

And why is all the chatter on this hit in the wrong (Islanders) thread?

Isabelle is reporting that the Capitals have been informed by the league that Wilson will not have a hearing for further discipline.  It didn’t say that the match penalty is rescinded which they usually do and I assume that since there is no further hearing the automatic suspension is lifted.

This discussion is not in the Islander thread.

I just saw it on a tweet from Bob Mackenzie. Sounds like it is true. Good news.
Because of the nature of this penalty call, meaning the match penalty that was assessed. It is an automatic suspension for Wilson unless reviewed by the league and it is decided it didn't deserve a suspension. If what Mackenzie says is true that means the league is admitting that the refs made a bad call.
Officials should be held accountable for mistakes likes this. It has happened before. The league should have a hearing involving these officials.

Well that would be good news.  The NHL should do the right thing.  I do not have a problem with Refs making mistakes - it happens.  Game is too fast to keep up with all ten guys at once and not miss something now and then.  I don't need a Ref apology - just "Yep, we missed, after seeing the replay, it was a bad call"

Willy still got to be careful.  This could have been catastrophic.

I do like that Rierdon spoke his mind and his point of view on it AND that he mentioned the Oshie/Kuzy incidents.

I can live with a missed call. I was a ref for years, you arent going tom see everything but you can't make up calls or make a call on something you didnt see. The officials could have watched a replay before deciding on giving him a match penalty. Ive seen it done before.

I asked the same question.. lol I think it's because Ice was so excited to post, he forgot to read any of the previous posts/realize he was in the wrong GDT..  :uh-huh:

Glad they got it right on the call.. I agree with Maaco, if they're allowed to review a replay before making that serious of a call, why not? Why isn't it mandatory to begin with? Game misconduct has to be on par (frequency) as goalie interference, offside/goals, etc.. The game is fast, on calls of that magnitude, use the damn technology and at least try to get it right on the ice..

Honestly, I'm really surprised there were not more chants of "refs, you suck"  during tonight's game.  Maybe comcast didn't want to show it because it was just too embarrassing?

The crowd was quite vocal about the call on Willy, there was even extra event staff at the doors when the zebras exited/entered the ice at the end of the 2nd/start of the 3rd. Something I've not seen at the arena downtown, ever. The fans at Capitals and Nationals games are some of politest fans I've encountered, it is very common to have the home fans applaud the visitors when a significant career achievement is made. I remember when Iginla was in town with 499 career goals, there were quit a few of us that wanted to see him get his 500th, and that kind of thing happens all the time at Nats games. I think the Caps fans are getting a tad frustrated with the appearance of this team getting shafted by the league.

A reporter asked Reirden if he wanted a replay system on calls like this. He tentatively agreed, but he said he thinks it would slow down the game too much. No doubt it would, but I think it may be worth it when a players career is on the line. The review team in Toronto would need to be increased as well, with truly independant minds involved, which is a large part of the problem to begin with

To me, this is no different than targeting in college football.  Targeting [head-to-head contact] gets tou kicked out of the game.  Before they do that, they review the tape to make sure they are right.  Like hockey, college football can be a fast game and easy to miss shit.   Why doesn’t the NhL, before removing a player from a game and automatically suspend them until a review, give them the same benefit of the doubt college football gives its players?

On these type plays, the game is already slowed down because there's always some dude laying on the ice holding his face. (whether he actually takes a hit to the head or not, they're pussy programmed now to pretend they've been shot.)

AS LONG AS WE CAN TRUST THE NHL FRONT OFFICE TO DO THE RIGHT THING, it isn't hugely necessary to do an in-game review to protect a player's status.  It didn't help matters that Wilson was off the ice for the last period, but as long as the league agrees that nothing egregious happened, the worst that could have happened is that the Caps missed Wilson too much and they lost last night's game.  Actually, Wilson's penalty was as fortunate as it could have been in one regard -- it happened with 2+minutes left in the 2nd period, so the kill was little more than killing two 2-minute minors rather than having to kill off a 5-minute major in one stretch.

Points/Games matter though.. I fully expected them to implode after Wilson left and they had to kill off 5 minutes w/o him. Thankfully they didn't!!

To be fair to the Devil kid, he was like 150 lb's or some shit. Wilson hitting him in the shoulder with a brush by is like getting shot to him probably haha.

That said tough to argue with Todd here. I'd love to see some sort of challenge on penalties that sends the play up to a room full or retired refs who know what the fuck should go on in that situation, but the league has to word it in a way that allows refs to save face. The game has been taking more directly out of the hands of just the refs on the ice and nobody else though, and I think this is one of those things where I could see coaches using challenges on phantom plays. It would call out divers too, because if you challenge and the upstairs see's a dive on the play, they should be allowed to call that too.

I loved Alan May's reaction/comments.  It wasn't just the Wilson hit, it was how hockey has completely changed in the last 3 years.  It would be interesting to watch a normal Caps mid-season game from 5 years ago and count the hits.  Then, immediately watch a current game and count the hits.  The "hits" they count for stats today, wouldn't have been counted before.  Usually, there are maybe 2 or 3 true hits in a current game. Its become a ladies game.

I think before a player is assessed a match penalty the play should be reviewed period.  There are not that many match penalties handed out so I don’t see how requiring video review would slow down a game that much.  I really believe that if the refs in this case had looked at a video replay before making his call, Wilson would not have been given a match penalty.  The official would have seen thst there was no contact with the head.

Could not agree more Mick!
There is a lot of inherent delay, especially with the match penalty call.

First off, many times, the refs take up time, separating opposing players from each other, who may have attempted some retaliation, for the original infraction that is under consideration for penalty.

Secondly, then the refs usually meet up, in their little, safe, half-circle area, to discuss things, sorting out what is what. Sometimes the ref puts the offender in the penalty box, while referee discussions continue. Again, more time taken up.

Then, like you mentioned, Mick, a possible injured player on ice, gets medical attention, if needed, adding more game delay.
IF the match penalty is affirmed, offending player is oft times escorted by the ref, then we have the delay that occurs while coaches get explanations, as to the circumstances of the decision.

Add in a possible network decision to then take a commercial break, and you’ve got PLENTY of time for a Toronto review. Certainly no worse than the goalie interference stuff!!  And a match penalty doesn’t happen THAT often!!
Still relieved that DOPS got it right!
