Now hear me out.

I've now figured out who I want to fill out the Caps' defense on the right side.

Radko Gudas.

Yes, i know he's 36 years old.  But he's a defensive stalwart, still plays a rough-&-tumble game, and is known for his penalty killing.  Sign him to a 2-3 year contract, maybe eat the last year.  But as a stopgap for now, and to help mentor and protect Hutson, you could do worse.  Chychryn and Hutson can provide the offense on defense; we need someone to stay at home and protect the goal.

As for the salary cap space, it stands at $14.325 million right now - but that doesn't count a $4.6 million LTIR exemption for Sandin.  Of course, when Sandin returns someone will need to be jettisoned to make room.  Or Sandin could be traded away for draft picks or something.

Id really like to see them get a rough and tumble BIG defensemen to add to this core.  He doesn't need to be a flashy puck moving goal scorer, he needs to be able to push his weight around and clear the crease.  Having just ONE of those guys on the ice would be nice now and then.  A Joe Reekie or John Erskine type    I know those guys are dinosaurs but someone more of that ilk

Brooks Orpik. :snicker:

So they gave up a prospect (5th round 2021 defenseman) and pick 192 this year just to have the rights to negotiate with Carlson before July 1st. YOu woulda thought that Carolina would have seen enough of Carlson to stay away. Hope they sign him to a 6 year $60 million deal!

As long as the Caps don’t resign Carlson I’m fine.

Yea, I can't really get my head around anyone entertaining a 36yo Carlson @ 10m for multiple years.. Much less giving up a prospect + a pick to get the chance. Makes no sense to me but, as Alta said, as long as it's not here..

We have the comfort of knowing that, as long as Ovie's future is up in the air, Carlson CAN'T sign here.  The cap room isn't there, given what Carlson is expecting.  Unless Ovie is willing to settle for $3 million or something, which I don't think is happening.

Carlson has to be signing with Carolina. I don't think they would have done that deal unless they had a strong indication they could get a deal done and Carlson would be crazy not to sign with them. I would love it as the Caps would get to toast him plenty next year.

I'll bet Ovi has told Caps management what he is doing and they are just keeping it quiet before a big announcement.

I think we got screwed in the draft. The big guy from BC, Hemming, got taken a few picks earlier, then LA traded to jump ahead of us to take Belchitz who was a 6'5" forward that can play. He was projected to go in the top 10 by a lot of people. Hopefully he turns out to be a big rig that can't actually play.

If nothing else, next yeat is going to be fun to watch to see what happens.  The team is definitely way better with Kyrou and Tuch.  I think Hutson is going to make a big difference and Leno is going to be better and better. Then we have Lil Pro and maybe Cristall coming.  Could be good!

Beagle, I don't know that we really got fouled up in the draft.  From what I saw of pre-draft speculation, the Caps' real need in their prospect pipeline at this point is centers, and Suvanto was the next logical choice at that position.

At this point, we already have a huge stable of big forwards, especially if Ovie returns:  him, AProtas, IProtas, Wilson, Tuch, PLDuBois.  In today's game, you really need smaller, shifty forwards to balance that out.  For that matter, Suvanto is the biggest of the top center candidates.

I personally like the selection of Suvanto, because he fills a glaring need for the organization:  A strong defensive center who is good at face-offs and puck possession.  Plus, a guy like that, who already has the defensive chops, is less likely to flame out before he gets to the NHL, or never really fulfill the role he is intended for.  [Look at the number of players, even in Round 1, who are described as having offensive chops, but need to pick up the defensive side of the game.]  He probably will be no more than a 3C or 4C, but it is very likely that he will make it in that role.  And, assuming he can fulfill those duties at the NHL level, he is the kind of guy you want on the ice at the end of the game to protect a lead.  That has VALUE in a league where the competition and the scores are so close.

He is NOT a glamorous first round selection.  But he is important.

BlackIce - good analysis. I agree. I really thought they would end up with the big forward from BC - seemed like that was meant to be.

Seems like we have had better luck with 2nd and third round picks lately. Hutson, Lil Pro and hopefully Cristal will be great.

And Big Pro was selected at the end of the 3rd round as well.

It's amazing, with the way he has turned out, that IPro also lasted until the 3rd round.

Looks like Malynstyn is resigning in Buffalo for 6 years at $3M per year. I always liked that guy and was bummed when we traded him - but I think we got Hutson with that draft pick we got. Wonder if the Caps thought about trying for him as a UFA?  I guess he didn't get to UFA though.

Beagle, I wasn't particularly surprised at the selection of Suvanto -- I saw him going to the Caps with one of their two picks in some mock drafts.

What I thought was interesting was when the Caps gave away one of their draft picks to move up 11 spots to get Tyus Sparks in round 4.  I always picture the middle and lower rounds of the draft as teams selecting from a bunch of mostly-indistinguishable, lesser-appreciated prospects, hoping to catch the guy who develops beyond what anyone can envision (or he would have been picked higher).  That the Caps would relinquish a pick in a draft where they didn't have many to begin with in order to get this guy says to me that they consider him some kind of outlier at that point.  For that reason, I'll be interested in seeing what he does next year and beyond.  Can we hope for another IPro - where he blows up in Juniors the year after he is drafted, and in Hershey the year after that?

I can understand teams moving up in the first round to get a player they covet among what is considered to be the top talent.  But in round 4?

I can't believe Johhny Q is expecting $10m/year at his age.  I think he started showing decline not only last year but the year before.  He still has some value, but not $10m/yr kind of value.

I would hope/expect the Caps have some idea of what Ovie is planning.  That seems only the right thing to do for your team which you have been such a huge part for your whole career.

Caps have 17m in cap space left, with neither Duhame or TVR signed - OR Hutson in that figure.   That does not leave much for FA market if Ovi is coming back.
You could get Duhame or his replacement for 2m/year, and I assume Hutson ELC is less than 1m, so that leaves 14m, and we absolutely need a Dman.  We have 6d counting Hudson and Lindjgren. It would be nice to find a stable D to play with Hudson.    Funny BlackIce mentioned Radko Gudas...i actually thought of him as well , but didnt know he was FA....AND he is a RD.  Honestly, I'd rather take a shot at Gudas for $3-4m per year than TVR.  $4 mill leaves us 10m for OVi....and i guess you can play with the LTIR relief of Sandin's cap relief (4.6m/yr)

I can't see the Caps making another big splash in FA market if Ovi is returning...they just don't have the cap space

Hutson has two years remaining on his entry level contract, Sourdif and Leonard have one year remaining each. All at under $1M per.

When OV signed his last extension he took a pay cut. He had been making $10M per forever but his last contract was at $9.5M. Not a real significant amount, but the cap was also going up for all but 3-4 years of his career. His percentage of team salary has gone way down since 2005. It would appear he understands what the team needs and has accommodated that, slightly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a one or two year deal at $8ish.

The bigger concern is the significant pay raises Sourdif, Leonard and Hutson are going to get in  one and two years.

Well - Gudas was traded to Florida so they are signing him.  I bet the Caps bring back TVR - hopefully on just a one year deal.  Not sure what they will do with Duhaime. May not be a roster spot for him, but he was a heart and soul guy that was loved in the lockerroom.

Now that Gudas is gone, how about signing Trouba who will be a free agent?  I love that guy!  He keeps guys on their toes, or they end up looking at the rafters.  I have no idea what the money side would be.

TvR signed a two year deal with Pittsburgh at $2M per. That leaves Duhaime and OV unsigned and more than enough room for Hutson on D, who is technically listed in Hershey.

Caps also let Hershey forward Ryan Hofer and goalies Garin Bjorklund and Jesper Vikman walk as free agents. Hofer and Bjorklund were 2022 and 2020 draft picks. Vikman we got from Vegas as part of the Dowd trade.
