I want to give a shout out to Ovechkin and the team for one thing.
Obviously there is a lot of attention on Ovie's effort to chase down Gretzky. But I don't see either the team or Ovie forcing anything. Ovie is having a huge season (on pace for 50+ goals in a full season) precisely because he is letting the game come to him, rather than having everything forced to him to try to get him goals. It's important for the team, too, because the secondary scoring is there this year to keep the attention of the other team elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see, as Ovie gets closer to the record and the team gets closer to clinching the playoffs, if they can keep the same style of play and not start focusing on getting him to 895, which might be more detrimental than helpful to his chances of getting there this season.
