--- Quote from: 4 Caps on Friday March 09, 2018, 10:32:19 PM Eastern ---Hey Mickstick, Carolina is accepting resumes for their GM position, I think you and DC should apply since you know so much about what makes a good GM.

You are the exact reason why the mediocrity continues. "Fans" like you. Your just happy to see a team, to see a generational player. At the end of the day if Ovie never gets a cup while you might be bummed, it wouldn't bother you. It should. The fact that we haven't been out of the 2nd round with these supposed "best rosters" ever, remember those are your words, is an utter embarrassment.
But instead of trying to analyze it, and see exactly what our issues are. Hint: We seem to fail the same way, every single playoffs, choke style. You just accept it. Don't worry, we get it you have posters of President Trophy wins on your wall and a tattoo of the mantra "We'll get em next time."
I also how how you default jump to the last Cup winners GM to say he's the best. Just because we have a nuanced conversation about GM moves does not mean we assume to do a better job. It just means we hold our franchise accountable. Mediocrity shouldn't be acceptable. The same result every season with Ovechkin with the odd time when we missed the playoffs should not be acceptable. Cup winning teams have canned their GM's two seasons later for that type of mediocrity. The reality is our owner doesn't care about winning a Stanley Cup. And when Ovechkin leaves and the money dry's up again because the casuals aren't coming in, this team will be exactly where it was without Ovechkin. Nowhere. It's a joke. And sorry that some of us are sick of it.
KitFisto:
Never wanted him to begin with. I wanted them to go outside the organization, but Ted never even considered that. It was all about continuing to retool around Ovechkin and Backstrom.

I haven't seen any one compare the talent level of this squad to 97'-98' squad. By just about every measure cept goalie this core group has had more talent around it in all but one key area, pride. This organization hasn't been past the 2nd round since then either.

That is a pretty harsh statement towards 4caps. I think he is pointing out that we are all armchair GMs here. Most of us here are unhappy with the management, including myself. But at the end of the day we are fans. Do we know more about hockey than the coaches and GMs? We all like to think we do but if we did we would be working for an NHL team.
Since Carolins is looking, where do I send my resume?

You do know that the run in 97-98 was total luck. We were an average team that rode a hot goalie. We also had an easy run in the eastern conference. The Caps were the 4th seed so we faced Boston who was the 5th seed. The top 3 teams in the east lost in the first round so we became the top seed left in the 2nd round. We then faced the 8th seed Ottawa in the 2nd round and the 6th seed team Buffalo in the 3rd round. We finally faced a top team in the final and got swept. The series was closer than people think. 3 of the 4 games were by one goal. I think the turning point in that series was the OT loss in game 2. Im sure Juneau was rewarded a penalty shot in the OT but lost the puck in the snow that Osgood piled up in front of the net. That might have been the game that Tikanen missed the wide open net.
