Not sure coach Trotz would want him?  Knows his antics too well already
He is a good coach, and Kuzy was progressing with him, it was amazing to see how he was playing. Trotz was developing players, even when we were loosing PO with him it was a decent team. Now it is just something embarrassing. Well maybe wait next 30 years to win another SC.

its not the coaches choice. It's the GM, and the owner. I've not been overly impressed with GMs since Teds group bought the team. But at least we got the entire season on TV out of the deal.

This season, and this team isn't a good judge of what Lavi can do. It's not not like with Reirdon were it was obvious from day one he was the wrong choice. Butt, the Caps do look like they need a new goalie coach and a new special teams coach. As well as dumping some overpaid talent.

He was the best coach for Caps for sure. I think we had a legit team, who can win SC at least for three seasons. From todays perspectives letting him go was such a blunder.

This indeed could be a VERRRRRRRY interesting summer.

The Caps need to make a fundamental decision off the top:  Are they now into age decline?  If they are, what is to be done about it?

At the core of this is Ovie.  Ted Leonsis made a pledge to him at the beginning of his career that he would do his best to build and keep a Stanley Cup contending team around him while he was here.  Ovie kept up his end of the bargain, production-wise, and Leonsis kept up his end as well.  Now one might not like many of the moves the team made to try to keep that promise, but there is no doubt that they made what THEY thought was a good faith attempt to do it (bad decisions, but good intentions).

The team has built a core that has aged, and they've generally gone with experience in bringing in complementary players, which has consistently kept them at or near the salary cap.  IF the Caps see the need to get younger, it will almost inevitably come with some regression, because their own prospects are on the whole not that great, you can't trade for good young players without giving up an arm and a leg, plus the really good young players are highly paid also, so you run out of salary cap room before you fill out the roster.

So if we resign Ovie, he either has to give a team-friendly deal or we are going to be hamstrung with his new contract plus the need to keep trying to optimize the talent around him, which inevitably strains the salary cap and may not even be possible now.  If we DON'T try to optimize the team around him, is Ovie going to want to be part of some kind of rebuilding process?  That may depend on whether he is more concerned about moving up in the goal-scoring ranks or chasing after more titles.  I suspect the latter is of more concern to him.  And there is also the undeniable attraction of his homeland.

IF we do not resign Ovie, that makes the rest of a youth movement much easier to carry off.  The problem is, if we don't resign him, and especially if it appears we don't make an honest effort to resign him, a substantial portion of the fan base may mutiny.

I personally vote for cutting ties with Ovie.  I think the idea of trying to retool a legitimate Stanley Cup contender around a 36-year-old Ovie is unrealistic, certainly in the current salary cap circumstances.  I don't think it makes any more sense than, say, a political party tying its future to a 75-year-old man who is overweight, out of shape, and has abominable eating habits.

Smartest thing would be to let Ovi go. I'm a big St. Louis Cardinal fan and when the got outbid on Albert Pujols it was very controversial but turned out to be the best thing that could have happened.  Ovi is clearly slowing down and with the pounding his body has endured, he could already be starting a very quick decline.  However, there is absolutely no way that Ted will allow management to let him go.

Same thing for Backstrom.  I just hated his playoff performance and lack of effort!

On the other hand, I think it is guaranteed that Kuzy is gone.  I think the whole Covid thing was a smokescreen and they hoped they would never have to play him again.

I don't see them letting Ovi or Nicky or Oshie go. But I think they can retool/rebuild along with those 3 contracts and still be ok. They obviously need to send Kuzy and his contract somewhere. I really don't see why they couldn't also move Carlson and his 8 million contract. Orlov can do what Carlson does, and play much better D in the process. Carlson racks up points due to who he's on the ice with. There's a few other larger contracts they could also do without, imo.. Dillon, Schultz, Mantha, Rafl all make a lot of money and (at least to my eye) don't bring anything out of the ordinary.. I just noticed Mantha makes more than fucking Tom Wilson.. Yikees.. I could live with losing anyone, but I just don't see them letting 8, 19 and probably 77 go. Praying Nicky was injured or something? If he ran out of gas that's not good.. But a whole bunch of them were invisible. I like our bottom 6. We have some young D.. Probably need a veteran goalie. Who knows, see what happens!!
