Well
Our Norris finalist (you know...the best DEFENSEMEN) was a -3 for this game. Good thing he’s back.
Typical softie goal from Holtby started the meltdown
Guys haven’t figured out there are three periods and you really need to play all of them

they played a great 1st period, and half of the 2nd. After that they couldn’t do much right

the PK was good at 4-4, but the PP needs work at 2-7

Am I the only one who is not totally in love with Kovalchuk?

There's quite a few of em' Im not totally in love with at the moment..  :snicker:  But yea, they're not paying him anything and he's playing like it.

Down 2 centers is gonna kill em' 5 on 5. Add in a little sloppy D and some shoddy goaltending and well, you know, the thing..

Have to slam our entire defense. Carlson standing around as usual with his minus 3.  Kempney was horrible, especially since he is supposed to be healed now from his injury. Orlov stunk as well and got steamrolled a couple times.  As for Dillon, I'm not in love with him either. Yes, he brings some toughness but he is less than average defensively.  I hope we don't resign him.

So, with such stellar play, why not start Fehrevary?  He was our best defenseman the other day.

Kempney was the only other -3 on the night for either team...shocker.

Our D is suspect at times....Times like WHEN WE ARE MISSING OUR 2 BEST 2-WAY CENTERS who shore up our D.  Without them, the D is left to their own and...well you allow 4 goals in a playoff game.
Eller gets no love on these boards, but he is greatly needed on THIS team.  I don't think we have a Cup without him because he really shined when Backy was out during that run.  Not comparing him to Backy, but Eller fills some big roles.  He will never put up great O numbers, but he is an excellent value at a 3c who fills lots of roles when needed.  Scored some big goals during the run, but I don't really count on him for too much in that area - more so of an all-around 3C kind of guy.  Kills penalties, can be 2C fill in, sometimes back checking, sometimes grinding in the O-zone.  He doesn't dangle like Kuzy and can't pass like Backy, but....that's why he's a 3C.

Holtby needs to be better., but then so does most of the team.

Same team, different year...if they played the whole game like they played the 1st period (or like they played for most of the SC run) then we'd have something to get excited about, but I'm not feeling it.

Islanders don't impress me...(neither did the Caps), but I think the Caps have a little more potential

I'm hopeful for the future with some of our young D (Ziggy, Fever) but who knows.  Team is aging.  I was hoping this would be the year Willy REALLY broke out on the offensive side.  Such a weird year.  I think they should have just bagged it and prepped for a normal Fall season, but you know all that lost revenue and such.  Now they are just F'n up next season.  Is anybody going to really care about this years SC winner?

Caps, please prove me wrong...WTFU and play some great hockey and get me back into this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming him for this game, but... I can't quite put my finger on it....
Does he have a problem with Willy?  Is he just selfish?  Does he think he's more of a star than he acrually is on this team?  Maybe he's just trying too hard.... ???
Can't quite put my finger on it.

Amen, sister.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing ..maybe the game before.  Would like to see more out of him, but I think part of it is you have an aging superstar...and he's not really going to shine on the 3rd & 4th checking lines.  Don't really have room for him on the top two lines so what do you do with him?  I was hoping playoffs would spark some great flashes out of him, but we shall see.

Also, I wasn't implying that Eller drives this team and we can't win without him, but his absence affects the overall balance, and especially when Backy left early, the lack of two centers shakes up everything and makes it MUCH easier for the other team to get more favorable match ups....or has a bigger effect on PP, PK and 5v5 play.  When the opponent doesn't have to work as hard to avoid your best lines, then everything is easier on them.

especially when the D can be suspect....and the goalie....and the rest of OH NEVER MIND!

Anytime the puck gets behind our net, our goalie and D are likely to crash and burn. Those soft hand offs along the walls need to be tightened up for sure.

When's Eller allowed back?

I wouldn't mind seeing McMichael put in for Nicky, if he can't go.. Don't think he'd fair too well on the 3rd or 4th line, but 1 or 2, who knows..

And yes, Willy needs to step his game up! Also Jake.. Those are younger guys who need to be shining.

Eller earned his way out of the Ellen moniker two years ago

also, if you go back and read the GDTs from the Cup run, none of us expected them to get out of the 1st round then either, because they looked like this game

Yeah but we also had a coach who knew how to coach during that Cup run. TR is so clueless. Even if we swept the Isles I still wouldn't expect to win the Cup because TR would get outcoached by a coach who has a solid roster behind him

I agree on Kovulchuk - very average and low end at that.

Jake has been invisible for all they games they have played. Dissapointing.

Agree on Eller, always liked him and never understand why he doesn't score more, but he is valuable in his role.

I would really like to see McMichael and Fehvevary get some playing time, but that is not the Caps style.

Finally, Backy being out may hurt, but I am not a huge Backy fan at this stage of his career.  Unfortunately, his is the one contract I think they will really regret in another year or two.

Well if we're talking about regretting contracts regret in later years....

Orlov
Johnny Q Dylan Norris
Oshie
Backy
Ovie
Kuzy

All these guys have contracts that overpay them at the latter ages in their careers (and some in the peak of them).  But, unfortunately that's what happens with contracts.
I mean I like all these guys (to an extent), but will they be worth their pay at the end of their contracts?  It's easy to criticize after the fact and hind site and all that, but at the time the contract was signed, you have to consider all the factors.  I don't think the salary is necessarily too high...just the term is too long, but that's what it takes to sign a guy and keep quality players.

Both Orlov and Dylan had the team over a barrel and we needed them.  I thought both contracts were way to high, and defnesemen were pretty scarce at the time.  And if Dylan is really a Norris candidate (and let's not go there cause I will NEVER agree that he is), then his contract is plenty fair.  Even if he is a finalist, then he should be in the top paid "D" in the league
Honestly Dylan has improved his game so much over the last few seasons, I'm not as sour on his deal anymore....but it will suck in the end

Oshie actually took somewhat a friendly discount to stay here previously and I think the long term was some sort of payback

Ovie....Well you can't NOT re-sign what has been the face of the franchise for more than a decade, a fan favorite, a bonafide superstar, and the best goal scorer of this generation and maybe ever.  Not to mention....he puts fans in the seats and draws the crowd....ahem....cha-ching $$$$

Backy...keeps Ovie happy, and has been great here as well.  Top quality centers don't come cheap...even old ones.

Kuzy...well alot of negative waves Moriarity, but the guy is superstar caliber and no way we have a cup without him.  And same deal...when he was up for contract...he was desperately needed here and he is a premier NHL center offensively speaking.

When you think about it, pretty much EVERY long term contract sucks when players age....so these are no different.
Someone (GMBM) deserves some credit for creative unloading in the last few seasons...

Nisky's contract was getting bad at the end and many thought the whole thing was too much, but he was a key player
Orpik's contract was atrocious at the end, but someone by hook or crook unloaded that and got him back for a cool mil
Brooks Laich deal was a great example of a bad contract in declining years...gratefully unloaded
Carl Alzner- was one of my favorites and I hated to see him go, but he was never worth the contract he got in free agency.  same goes for Beags.  Loved that guy, but...\

I am sure we will look back and regret some or all of these current contracts, but that's not that unusual.

I look at the names on this list of bad contracts and if any one of them wasn't here, we don't have a Cup.  (well maybe not true of Orlov)

I do agree the next few or several seasons these contracts are really going to pinch simply because you are not going to be able to afford your younger stars who are due contracts.

Anyway, I don't think there is a team out there that isn't overpaying its aging stars.  Caps have been in salary cap trouble for years and it's only going to get worse in the next few seasons.

I really wonder what will happen with the expansion draft...I'd be tempted to leave all these big contract unprotected so you don't lose any valuable bargain youth (ahem...Smitty)

Although Nate made 8 mil this year.  No way Caps could've taken the cap hit on him.  He is $6 mil average, which I would take over $5m for Orlov, but if's and buts were....you think Vegas will consider a even trade?

Enough diversion for one day.
