240mph is doing somethin in a car. I did not know they could do that (even on a test track) with them thar redneck rides.
I had a 340 'Cuda 4 speed back in the day - it had the Hurst pistol grip shifter. I had it up to about 130mph out on Rte 7 between Reston and leesburg one night. This was 1984 and that was a straight and unoccupied road (well mostly, late at night anyway). It was late, after 11 at least, pitch black and believe me that car was moving and shaking at 110. That night was the one and only time I put that car up above 110 or so, and rarely past 90 really. We (my best friend and I) were trying to see just how fast she'd go that night. 130 was all I could muster. Speedometer was jiggling quite a bit so we're guessing and claiming we topped out around 130. Honestly felt like it MIGHT have had a teeny bit more, but I can say we were seconds away from something getting loose.
Just as I began to let off I thought I saw something moving up ahead. No shit there was a big black steer trotting along the shoulder ON THE SHOULDER of the road. We passed him at about 110 at about 8' of clearance. Almost never saw him...could see his tail waving back and forth as he trotted along. Sum bitch nearly killed all of us. Young and stupid we were. Had some great fun in that car though.
Kevin was my best friend and he's been gone ten years now. Great guy, died way too young from heart complications from lifetime of diabetes. Miss him nearly every day. He was such a good guy.
Anyway, I did about 130 in that Cuda and that maxed out it and me both in that ride
