Alzner on waivers..
« on: Monday November 26, 2018, 12:32:19 PM Eastern »

So, how does this work? The Habs put Alzner on waivers at noon est.. If he clears, is his contract still valid if someone picks him up? Or can you sign him for an Opik type deal? We could use a vet shutdown man on the 3rd pair..

Edit: Actually, I guess if he "clears" he just gets sent down.. To claim him would mean taking on that contract, correct?

I'd say the Caps could sign him just as anyone else could. While I love the guy, I don't know if I would go after him at this point

Yea, signing him is one thing, but paying that 4.5 x 4 salary is something else.. I think they'd need to buy him out before anyone would reasonable consider signing/claiming him?

Ya the salary is a problem. Not sure if anyone has watched him play but his game has really diminished. We saw the start of it when he was still here but his game has diminished even more since then. Someone might pick him up.

Alzner had serious groin damage before his time here was up.  He never fully recovered from that, much like Laich before him, though I think Laich's situation was even more severe.  I'm sure that was why the club never tried to do anything with him, but just let him go.  Why MTL gave him that big contract is beyond me, but in a sense "it's a reward" for the hard work he did in his years here.  It just wasn't us that gave him the reward.

A dirty little secret is that, if the Caps had tried to trade Alzner they would have had to disclose all their medical records on him upon request, because they would be trying to exchange asset for asset.  But once someone becomes an unrestricted FA they are no longer under your control, so you don't have to show anybody anything.  It is up to them to do due diligence.

The Caps CAN'T acquire Alzner and stay under the salary cap.  Now they might be able to keep him temporarily if Kuzy/Oshie were put on LTIR, but then they'd have a problem on the day they came off.

Agree with a post I saw somewhere, Alzner falls into that Beagle/Hendricks deal where I'm sorry to have seen them go, but happy as hell they "got paid" because of all the hardwork they did for the Caps and because they seem like genuinely good guys, and even happier yet that the Caps weren't the ones who paid them.

No one is picking up Alzner's contract.   It's kind of the risk you take when you sign a big contract - if you're game slides, no one else will take on that contract.  Still can't believe what Montreal was thinking when they signed him.

Alzner has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Montreal’s AHL team.  That has to be tough for Alzner to take.

It should also be noted that not only are the Habs stacked on D, but Weber is coming off LTIR, so Alzner and contract are the odd man out.

Rather he can not come back from his injury, is not getting along with Julien or whatever we can't say for sure, but there are options to move him if it is viable.

Regardless, some of the D play we've seen this year makes Jeff Shultz look like Scott Stevens, so Id be all for Alzner on one leg while Djoos, Bowery, and others get back to weight room in Hershey

I'd love to see Alzner back purely from a fan point of view. But I really don't think the Caps need him anymore. The young D corps are vastly improved over last year and by the end of this year I expect they won't need Orpik around anymore either, even if it's another 1 at $1M deal. That's what Alzer would have to agree to to come back as well. I don't see it happening

Hey Bowey has impressed me. I guess you missed him knock Anders Lee on his ass last night. Djoos I could go without.
In all honesty if you have watched Alzner play since he went to the Canadians you wouldnt want him on our team. His game has regressed that much. He never had any offensive upside and now his defense is average at best now. Its bad when Jordie Benn is ahead of you on the depth chart. Alzner has aged and has had some injuries and the game has changed so much that he just isnt van NHL calibre defenseman anymore. It sucks because I really liked him. There us no way I would want him on my team with his salary.

Hell I'd of taken Benn over Alzner anyway. . .but it really doesn't matter as neither of them play the faggy-stickplay-pond hockey bullshit ponzi-scheme Monumental Entertainment is selling these days.

Wonder if the Habs fans are wanting to lynch the GM?? I mean, it's not like he's on year 3 or 4 of the deal. He just signed it last year!! And now he's gonna be riding the bus with the AHL team? Gotta suck for all involved..

Yeah ... but I hope it works out either way for Alzner.  Quality human being.

I dont like the pond hockey either but these guys really aren't good dmen no matter what style your team plays. Alzner might be done as an NHL dman.
