Overall, the team is not playing that well.  They are only 9-8 since 11/21.  That's over six weeks ago.

Yep.  Everything was clicking and ridiculous shot percentages got us rolling early on, but we all knew it could not last forever.  The Caps are a very good team, but when NOT everything is going just right, it shows they are not the juggernaut their record would indicate they are.  They can't come from behind as often as they do and continue to be highly successful.
I kinda figured we'd go thru an extended marginal 50/50 record for a good stretch at some point to bring us back to earth.  Hope I'm wrong about that.  Hoping Carbs can get them going again.  I will say then never really quit, they do stay in the game, and have come back many a time, but it would certainly be better to NOT be chasing the game all the time...especially against mediocre teams.
Although, I don't know why Buffalo is so mediocre, they looked decent yesterday, have some legit stars, and the goalie is a mammoth of a netminder

Rich, I think what you're saying probably goes for any team in the NHL right now.  I don't think there are any clearcut juggernauts right now.

I think generally the Caps are NOT a standout stick handling/deking team.  That isn't what their game is.  They score goals basically in one of three ways (which is true to a greater or lesser degree for most teams):  deflections, screens, and snipes.  They have shown real deflection skill this season up and down the lineup I think.  Their screening capability, with Wilson, to a lesser extent Ovie, and last and most beastly, Protas, is top notch.  And they DO have their share of snipers.  But only the sniping is a potential asset in the shootout, and you don't see it used all that often.  I'm wondering if more of the Caps in the shootout ought to skate in to 4 meters, pick a spot, and let it fly.
