Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov to miss third straight game with “upper-body” injury

Evgeny Kuznetsov will not play Thursday night against the Red Wings. (Amber Searls/USA TODAY Sports)

DETROIT — Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov will miss a third straight game with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury he suffered last week. He was on the ice with his teammates again on Thursday morning ahead of Washington’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena, but Kuznetsov didn’t participate in line rushes.

“He’s real close, as you can see,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “He was jumping around and all that. At this time of the year, we’re just going to be cautious. I expect him to jump in real soon here.”

The team has a scheduled off day on Friday, and it’s unclear if Kuznetsov will be ready to play against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Washington has a two-point cushion over the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and this trip against the Red Wings, Canadiens and New York Rangers — teams well out of the playoff race — is an opportunity for the Capitals to secure the division’s top postseason position.

Getting Kuznetsov back in the lineup would certainly help. He is the team’s second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 50 assists; he also plays on Washington’s first power play unit and is often the one making the zone entries go smoothly. Before Kuznetsov appeared to hurt his left arm against the New York Islanders on Friday, he was centering the top line with captain Alex Ovechkin and winger Tom Wilson. Without him, center Nicklas Backstrom moved into that spot, and the ripple effect has rookie Travis Boyd as the third-line center with wingers Jakub Vrana and Brett Connolly. Since the start of the calendar year, Kuznetsov has nine goals and 23 assists in 31 games.

Goaltender Braden Holtby wasn’t on the ice for Wednesday’s optional practice, and the team said he was taking “a maintenance day.” He was back on the ice Thursday morning, but the Capitals had a third goaltender — video coach Brett Leonhardt — suited up, too. Trotz indicated later something is nagging Holtby.

“Yeah, he just tweaked something,” Trotz said. Philipp Grubauer will get the start in Detroit, but that was the plan going into the week.

Holtby played the full game in Tuesday night’s 4-3 win over the Stars, but Dallas forward Remi Elie collided with Holtby halfway through the third period, and Holtby was initially slow to get up.

“We’re just trying to make sure he’s okay,” Trotz said. “He’s doing fine. You saw, he was moving around fine and took the majority of the shots.”

Despite the work put in by Holtby during the skate, the Capitals called up Pheonix Copley from Hershey and he will serves as Grubauer’s backup tonight.

Changes are coming to NHL’s goaltender interference reviews

Capitals Coach Barry Trotz on the current interference review method: “It’s no different than a student marking their own papers.” (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

Amid criticism of inconsistency with goaltender interference reviews, the NHL will soon have its hockey operations department in Toronto make the rulings whenever a coach challenges a goal. The aim is to have the “situation room” handling the goaltender interference reviews by the time the postseason starts.

“It will be an improvement to the extent that the managers and the coaches were looking for consistency,” Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters at the conclusion of the general manager meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., this week. “Hockey operations, we have to wear whatever decision is made anyway.”

Goaltender interference has become the NHL’s most controversial rule of late, and teams’ frustration with it seemed to reach a boiling point when Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot sounded off last month. “There’s just no consistency and I’m [expletive] sick of it. It’s [expletive] ridiculous,” Talbot said after a review went against the Oilers.

“I don’t think anyone knows what’s goalie interference and what isn’t,” Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan said earlier this month.

Unlike video reviews for offside, which tend to be more clear-cut, goaltender interference is subjective. The current system has referees on the ice looking at iPads and reviewing a goal they had just called as good or no good in the moment. During that process, the game referees are speaking to hockey operations about the review, but the ultimate decision still rests with the on-ice officials. With the upcoming change, the referees will still be involved in the decisions, but Toronto will make the final call, perhaps making the decisions more uniform. Bettman said that one of six retired referees will take a seat on a nightly basis in the situation room for goaltender interference calls.

“There’s some referees who are more established and more sure of themselves, and they won’t reverse their calls,” Capitals Coach Barry Trotz said. “They almost say, ‘That’s the way I saw it, and that’s the way it is, so live with it.’ Others get swayed by what they see or maybe the crowd or another coach or how the game is going. It’s no different than a student marking their own papers. Let’s have a nonemotional person, who has no skin in the game and is not in an emotional environment, to make those calls, and I think you’ll find it’ll be more consistent. It won’t be based on emotion, and it won’t be based on confidence of a referee, if you will, to reverse the call or not reverse the call. So, I just think it will become a little more black and white when you have someone who’s very neutral — not that the referees aren’t neutral, but someone who’s not in the heat of the battle — and a little bit removed.”

The league said this week that through more than 1,000 games this season, there were 170 combined challenges from coaches and the situation room for goaltender interference, and the NHL disagreed with just a small fraction of the calls made by the referees. The call on the ice was confirmed 119 times, and the initial ruling was overturned 51 times.

So since I ragged on Dylan earlier today in the other thread, Let me congratulate him for his 600th game tonight.

Go Big John.

Go CAPS.

I just found out I am picking up my son and daughter in law at the Airport tonight and their flight just got delayed. :O=
I was just about to head home (total opposite direction from Reagan National) and prep for the Cap game.  Now I am sitting at work waiting to here if they made their flight and what time I have to fetch them.  I'd have to leave my house about 15 minutes prior to game time to get them in time (assuming they are on time).  So likely I'll sit stay at work only to learn they will be delayed another hour.

Yeah, Uber from Reagan to Warrenton (well Marshall actually) might be pricey...there are four of them.
They gave me a grandson this year so I have to cut them some slack....even though I'm surely not nearly old enough to be a grandpa.

It was supposed to be my wife and pickup at Dulles at 8.  Now it's me at Reagan at 9:15.  Ugh.
