..... Which brings us to the upcoming NHL draft.

A lot of speculation has the Caps taking either center Dalibor Dvorsky, or Russian RW Michkov if he happens to fall because of concerns about Russia and his current contract to play the next 3 seasons there.  But I'm not so sure about that.

The Caps have two equally glaring needs for the near future:  Center, with Backstrom and Kuznetsov being problematic, and right defense.  If you look at the Caps' defense, the 3 apparent LD -- Fehervary, Alexeyev, and Sandin -- are all age 23.  The 3 RD -- Carlson, Jensen, and TVR -- are all 30+.

The top two defensive prospects in this year's draft are David Reinbacher and Axel Sandin Pallikka, both RD.  Reinbacher is the bigger, stronger player with some offensive upside; Pallikka is the smaller, shiftier type with more PP potential.  Either of these guys is considered by some evaluators as a bit of a stretch at #8, though I have seen mocks that place Reinbacher as high as #6.

I have no inkling of the organization's thinking about individual prospects.  As always, a lot depends on what happens with the picks in front of them.  But my own guess is that it's 50/50 that the Caps go C or RD with the pick at #8.  Or if the draft is going in a certain way and some other team is interested in a particular player at #8, the Caps may trade down a few places to try to pick up another draft pick, if they think they can get a desired player a few places later in the draft.

well shit.  Fuck Vegas anyway, but that was a shit show in Dallas last night.  like 8 shots in two full periods or something ridiculous and Vegas with 4 goals on 16 shots or some shit.
That was just uglyl
I really didn't think Dallas had enough to win,  but FFS you could have showed up.

Dude, did you see how close it came to the grandstands?? It'd of killed multiple people. Crazy how easily it was cut from the tether. I guess they hit just right to shear it off. Glad nobody but the car was hurt! I fell asleep during the race. Woke up just in time to see all the excitement. lol
Yikes...that tire was humming across there....that could have been super ugly.

I’ve seen a couple reports this morning that indicate this is a done deal..

I think it's fair to say that the Caps have not had a whole lot of luck bringing coaches in for their first NHL head coaching gig.  Meanwhile, other rookie coaches come in and turn out to be quality hires.  Here's hoping that Carbury will be a home run as a head coach that this franchise is overdue for.

Not sure about this one.  While I generally like hiring from within and rewarding coaches for working their way up, I'm afraid this guy will have his Hershey guys and will be compliant with the Caps management style and will not shake things up with a fresh perspective.  I would like a hardline coach that holds players accountable - even veterans.  Hopefully he will be more aggressive than I think he will.

Interestingly though, Beagle, the Hershey guys who are the most viable prospects aren't really HIS Hershey guys, because he's been out of the organization for the past couple of years.  Now you may be right that, having come through the lower pro leagues he might be partial to guys coming up in general.  But I don't know that he has reason to favor these prospects in particular.

As for shaking things up and holding veterans accountable:  Do we really think that Carbery, or any coach, is going to instill an attitude in the core players distinctly different from whatever it has been over their pretty-to-very long careers?  These players are who they are at this point.  Or are you hoping for some sort of new motivation from the non-core, younger or less old veterans (Sheary/Mantha/TVR/Dowd/Brown)?

Yes, I realize he is not going to bench Backstrom or Carlson to send a message.  I think in general though that this team has coasted for years without holding guys accountable.  However, we are in for two more years of decline while Ovi chases the record, so I am not expecting much.  Maybe this guy just gets some experience and then we finally have some draft picks come through in year 3.

Well no disrespect, but I was hoping for more.  At least we have his vast NHL playoff coaching success experience with Toronto  :raspberry:

Is it just me or does this guy look like a hybrid of the new Spock and Jean-Luc Picard? (ahem...boredom thread)

watched the presser with new coach.

Alexa is looking F I N E.

I am a little surprised she hasn't moved on to bigger things.  I think she has become an excellent lead broadcaster on this Caps network.  Great speaker, and really keeps it moving.  Being cute as a button is a plus, but she is excellent at her job. Glad she is still here, but wonder how long she will stay.

Wonder who they bring in as assistant coaches.

Carberry will be several steps in the right direction if he realizes that we need to lose a bunch of the tired vets and get younger quickly.

It would’ve been nice to see them go 1-1 in Vegas, but now they get 2 at home to work with.

I watched the entirety of game 2.  Very disappointed.  Despite the score 2-0 after 1st, I thought the play was fairly even.  And then it went to shit.  Vegas did a good job of blocking shots and stifling FLA in the O-zone.  All I kept hearing is Eddie Oldchick chiming in with.....FLA hasn't had a shot in 5 minutes...6 minutes ....8 minutes.  I am sick and tired of the announcers being so "pro-Vegas".  And FLA was in the O-zone and had many many shot attempts, but they could not hit the net to save their lives (or theirs Cup hopes), and Vegas DID block a lot of shots.  And then FLA still outshot Vegas by the end of the 1st, but you don't hear the announcers say anything about that.  Vasilesky didn't have his best game, but you know the bounces just kept going Vegas' way.  I mean a FLA player would make a defensive play and knock the puck off a Vegas stick and it would go right to another Vegas guy.  Vegas goalie was pretty damn good or pretty damn lucky.  Reminded me a little of watching the Caps....lots of attempts, but nobody could hit the net...and FFS SHOOT THE PUCK!  So frustrating.
Anyway, I think they are probably done.  I hope not.  I hope FLA wakes the hell up and the bounces start to go their way.

And Tkachuk....two ten minute misconducts in one game?  How the F did he get 2 and 10 for a clean hit on Eichel?  Oldchick kept saying it was a bad hit, but watch it in slow mo....and Tkachuck never moved, never lifted his arm, was making a clean shoulder check and Eichel kind of fell into him.  It looked bad at full speed but it wasn't that bad.  There was no penalty call on the hit.  I realize there was a lot of nonsense after the hit and that's where Tkachuk got the minutes, but what about the THREE Vegas guys who jumped him after the hit.  There should have been a FLA PP for all that.  The hit on Gudas was much worse and there wasn't even a penalty.  He got a shoulder to the face and fell awkwardly and bonked his head pretty good on the ice.  I think he might be done.

Tkachuk's second 10-minute misconduct was a joke.  He literally tapped the stick out of a guys hand as they were standing around the crease after the whistle.  Yes, he is an agitating fucker, but 10 minutes for that?  I'm sure the refs were trying to keep the game from getting out of hand, but that was a bit much.  Not that it would have made a difference in the game at that point.
Mostly, I'm just disappointed the Cats didn't play better.

And FUCK VEGAS.
