Okay, I'm officially bored.  I'm down to looking at stats.

Bearokowski has played 7 games and has zero points.  He is also a minus 6.  I don't read TOO much into a +/- cause it can be deceiving especially after only 7 games, but -6 in seven games for a third/fourth line guy should result in being scratched.

EARLY on, I kind of wondered if he might get a shot at playing on the top line...NOT THAT HE DESERVED IT, but he is useless as a fourth line guy.  I know Caps do that with younger players and struggling players, but the Bear is a race horse, not a grinder.  He is never going to produce at the third or fourth line.

If he were worth anything, he'd be trade bait.

I liked Stephenson on the "top" line more so than Connolly, but I also think Stephenson looks better on the fourth line.  I would like to see Vrana get a shot.  I know that is not very responsible for defense purposes, but I would like Vrana to get a shot on the top two lines.  If you put have Ovie/Kuzy/Vrana - could be exciting at the least. (if we ever manage to get into the O zone with the puck)

I do miss my big Willy.  Hope he comes back soon.  We are 1/3 of the way through the suspension.  Freaking Bettman is just stalling.  When did they meet?   Thursday?  What is he still reviewing at this point?

I think the players union ought to try and fight for a rule on the timing of suspensions and appeals in the next contract talks.  It didn't take but a day or two after the infraction to issue the original suspension.  Why does it take two weeks to get/review the appeal?  It's not like they didn't know it was coming.

The team/player should have the option to choose to play during the appeal process and then if the sentence is not reduced, then they have to sit.  This would at least get the process moving.

Blah, blah, blah.  wah, wah, wah.

Cool! Didn't know he was from Ohio.. Have fun! Don't do anything I wouldn't do!  :raspberry:  :P

I agree Rich, (It's bullshit they had a 7 hour meeting yet Bettman needs 5 more days to go over the transcripts and come to a conclusion?) they should be able to play until the appeal is done, if they choose.. Im sure they'd need something different if it happened near/in the playoffs though, but during the regular season they should be allowed to play until the process is finished..

playing unti the appeal would keep these asshats from dragging their feet about it

If it were me I'd scratch Bura, play Oshie on the RW on the top line with Kuzy/Ovechkin and put Nick with Vrana and Stephenson. I think Nathan Walker at this point brings more to the line up than Bura, same with Jaskin. DSP also deserves 3rd line minutes, so I'd put him with Eller and Connolly. Bura needs to be trade bait for us at this point, honestly.

We don't need another type of his forward, he's playing awful all over the ice, we need another big body to play with Eller on that third line so I'd gladly love to see our GM try to find a more character player to insert into that bottom six rotation.

Figured this thread was as good as any....

Saw this article (Dan Rosen - NHL) about "Bearkowski"

Do you think the Washington Capitals can entertain an Andre Burakovsky (https://www.nhl.com/player/andre-burakovsky-8477444) trade? He's underperforming and has a $3 million NHL salary cap charge. Maybe they can shore up their backup goalie position? -- @GLaSnoST9
I understand the frustration with Burakovsky's listless performance this season with zero points and seven shots on goal through eight games. I understand the question about trading the forward to free up that salary cap room and boost the backup goalie position. But I wouldn't be so quick to give up on a 23-year-old forward who has physical gifts, including size (6-foot-3), and has produced in big spots in the past. If they tried to trade Burakovsky now they'd be selling low. The Capitals don't have to get a new backup goalie yet. Pheonix Copley (https://www.nhl.com/player/pheonix-copley-8477831) has played in two games, started one. He has an .873 save percentage and 4.04 GAA. Braden Holtby (https://www.nhl.com/player/braden-holtby-8474651) isn't much better in his seven games with a .885 save percentage and 3.46 GAA. He's allowed four or more goals in three of his seven starts. Maybe the Capitals need to help their goalies more. I'd wait, give Burakovsky some more time to see what he can do, but all the while do my homework if I was general manager Brian MacLellan to see what the market is for him. He's a restricted free agent after the season and he'd need to be qualified by the Capitals at $3 million. That could be too high of a price tag for a player who is not producing, which means Washington could risk losing him for nothing. He'd become an unrestricted free agent if they don't qualify him. That's not going to fly, so a trade might eventually be in the offing, even if it means they sell low.

My two cents:  I am about done with Bura....too much time given for a guy that is going to end up another Alexander Semin.  It sucks cause Bura does have some size and certainly skills, he just can't seem to get out of his own head.
Trade him now and his value is low, but waiting til next season gives you nothing.
And I would trade for a big body bruising kind of grinder, not another backup goalie.  Give Bura till the 10 game mark and then ship him off.  Walker at least shows some hustle and Jaskin seems to play with an edge.  (Pretty much what Devise said)

This is about years late but, oh well.

I think most GMs would of moved him and certainly not extended him, by now, but we are talking about a popular player on the Caps so here we are.

About the only chance in hell he gets traded is if he becomes unpopular with The Caps target demographics (soccer-moms and 12yos), and not be in line with the “keep the band together” marketing strategy

If Bura hasn't blossomed yet here, I seriously doubt he will. Time move him. Maybe he will blossom somewhere else. It happens every now and then.

If Burakovsky were a stalk of corn, we would have all STARVED, waiting for him to “blossom”!!
The most stale, predictable, and repetitive story of any recent caps player, Period!
The media commentary about him, over the last 3 seasons, you could memorize, verbatim, like a prayer at the dinner table!
Its BURA himself, who states every time, after his resets/injuries/negative production spells, etc., that “he feels great”, or “ his legs feel good”, or “he’s learned, now, not to put too much pressure on himself”, blah, blah, blah! MAKES ME FRICKIN’ PUKE, to hear any professional sportswriter attempt to insinuate that he’s worth waiting for, because of his “physical gifts” and talents. HELL, on the contrary, it’s BECAUSE of his natural physical gifts and skills, which should have him in a high level playing position, that he receives condemnation.  HELLO?? A crazy skill set, with a repeatedly proven mental inability to bring it to fruition, on the ice! And has been afforded multiple opportunities to showcase himself, beyond any reasonable period of time.
“When the grief exceeds the profit...get rid of the grief”!!!

JFC WTF is with this schedule?

Another FOUR DAYS OFF with no CAPS game???!!!

WTF NHL!!!

what moron made this schedule?

Week one featured 2 games (back to back) in the first 2 days of the season and then none for 5 days,
then Week two - 3 games in 4 days
then Week three starts with 3 days off and then 2 games in three nights.
Week four a bit more reasonable with 3 games in 7 days,
but then Week four starts with 4 days off followed by 2 games in three days.

I missed the game Saturday (hate 4pm starts) but now I have to wait til Freaking THURSDAY?

WTF?

‘Shine) the night before and/or morning of a game

THERE SHOULD DAMN WELL BE A NEW GDT BY NOW!!!

man the clock is slow...

don't have much confidence about tonight's game.  Prove me wrong Caps.

Edmonton is pretty damn fast, and it appears this years Caps just tries to keep up instead of actually trying to slow other teams down, hence the silly scores this year.

Go Caps!

Here's an observation for you:

Every single team in the NHL that currently has a positive differential in goals...is currently in playoff position.
It's weird...it's like if you score more goals than allow, you win more games    (memo...to coaching staff...)

I'm curious to see where the Caps end up in the standings.  I never thought (well not in recent weeks) they would end up in 1st.  I think we will be fighting for 3rd in the division at best.  I'd be okay ending up in second or third, but would prefer not to end up in a wild card spot.  I certainly don't wan't Tampa in the first round, and not really Boston either.  I'd say it's pretty much a given that Boston and Toronto are a lock for 2, 3 so they will play each other.  (Montreal is 10 points out and I don't think they make the wild card spot, much less catch Toronto)

I'd really be okay starting the playoffs against anyone in our division other than Tampa.  I am not overly confident that we beat any team, but none of them really scare me.  I think the Caps can handle Carolina or Columbus, and Shittsburg doesn't scare me either.  I'm not that bothered by the Isles either.  Don't get me wrong, ANY of these teams could beat us, but I think Tampa is the only team that is truly dominant, and the Caps could beat them.  I'd rank Tampa as the best (wow, go out on a limb, I know) and Boston second, with the Caps third best in the East.  Maybe rank Toronto in their with the Caps, but  I'm a Caps fan so....

Caps play Carolina twice in the last ten games, so we they can sort of control their own destiny of NOT finishing last IF they show up and beat the Canes in both games, and if it comes down to a wildcard spot.

I know this is all fantasy at this point, but I can still dream, can't I?  (DAMN YOU, font size change thingamajig)

Oh, and someone call Kuzy and tell him we know he likes the playoff games and the regular season is just a warm up, but if he doesn't start warming up there won't be any playoffs.  About time for Holtby to find his groove too.

Go Caps

Carefull though, there are three teams and four coaches that are out for blood.  Not to mention each coach is better than ours, and have better D then we do.

This will absolutely be the most difficult playoffs in Caps history.  We should expect each team to play their best, each coach to come up with new schemes and new strategies, the likes of which we haven’t faced before.  But most of all NO ONE, will be looking past us and just waiting for us to loose.

“Talent” and last year will not be enough

Yep.  I'm not holding my breath this year.  WAY TOO MANY IF's.  And you're right, hell, all the teams will be out for our blood.  I'm would not be surprised at any of the teams beating us, but I also would not be surprised to see us beat anyone else (except Tampa) I mean we CAN be Tampa but I don't think we will (if we got the chance)

IF the caps show up.  IF Holtby is Hot.  IF Ovi wants it enough.  IF KUZY wakes the hell up.  IF  Backy shows up for the playoffs.  IF our D play at their best and our team D excels.  IF Willy doesn't get another mystery suspension, IF Reirdon can actually coach and handle the playoffs, IF the opponent doesn't get the bounces.  I mean, we got lucky last year and all these things fell into place and went our way, and we barely scraped by.  It was great, and I loved every minute, but I'm really not expecting it to happen again this year.

I just hope it aint Shitsburg that tosses us.  I hate losing to those whiney diving faggots.  I don't mind getting beat (well, I do, but....) by a hard hitting, hard playing team with superior talent and coaching that is just better.  I do hate getting beat by fucking diving, whiny cry-baby type hockey players.  The NHL REALLY needs to start calling the dive penalties.  It ain't a fucking soccer match.

The coaching is a problem.  It not a knock on Reirdon (okay, I guess it is) to say ALL the other teams we could face in the playoffs have better coaching.  I don't think that is unfair to say.  I can appreciate that Uncle Ted and the brain trust are very loyal an that TR did deserve an opportunity at some point, but why didn't we go after Babcock when he was available?  He is coach of ELITE status.  They don't come around that often.  Was he already signed by the time we were done in SC last year?

Also Faceoffs.  Someone (well several of us) have mentioned this in other threads how big an issue this is.  It's not just a stat, it's the potential of what the won/lost face off leads to.  On the PK or on the PP especially.  We don't have a solution for this.  It will cost us a game eventually, and a game might be the end of a season for us.

Anyway,

GO CAPS

Is it wrong for me to agree to disagree that Hockey isn't really for EVERYONE, and I don't mean gay....I mean like most of my friends of lets say...."Latin American" ancestry have NO interest whatsoever in Hockey and don't care to have it forced on them, so It should be Hockey is for Everyone....who is INTERESTED IN HOCKEY.

How about 4mil left with Vranna and Stevenson still RFA?

Nicks contract being up and Holts is gonna need a payday. . .

In a perfect world we’d move Kuzy and/or Carlson for their cap space

Ideally, we’d just use the Cap space to extend Holts to keep him from going to a rival, then scrape up a could mil to add to Nicks.

But I think we resign Vrans, go into another with season with low cap room and hope for the best

Despite some of the complaints about his coasting and one-way play....we REALLY ARE blessed to have this superstar on our team and have had the pleasure of watching him on a daily basis.  He truly is the best goal scorer of his generation.

Title: Re: The dedicated boredom thread for Rich
Post by: richkrt99 on November 01, 2019, 09:34:27 AM
So I had this dream last night:

-I was riding an albino unicorn through the streets of DC watching the celebration parade because the Washington Nationals had just won the world series.

-I was taking the day off because I was actually caught up at work.

-They were giving away free beer at the parade

-The Nats team was on a float pulled by Minotaurs, and each player was escorted by a beautiful mermaid

-Trump was there to congratulate the team and gave a speech...and the talking head news reported the TRUTH about what he said

-The Caps were there to celebrate and congratulate the Nats, and the Caps had just finished a 10 day west coast road trip where they won 4 games, and lost 1 in OT, taking 9 out of a possible 10 points in the longest road trip of the season.

-The Caps were off to a great start to the season, in 1st place in the NHL and leading the entire league in goals

-A 34 year old Ovie was playing well and hustling, and had 11 goals in the first 14 games

-Johnny Q Norris Carlson was nearly leading the whole league in points with 23 (league leader had 25)

-Kuzy was playing well, and hustling, and actually body checking people

-Wilson was only being penalized for ACTUAL penalties

-The Caps off season moves had been cost effective and actually IMPROVED the team

-Nobody was talking about firing Rierdon (or BMAC)  (well, at this parade anyway)

-The Washington Wizards were actually winning....and they changed their stupid name back to the Bullets....and they didn't have a stupid logo that nobody understood, and someone actually cared about the Bullets...and the NBA in general

-The media was reporting good news.....and it was the TRUTH

-People were normal, and nice to each other, and actually worked hard, and cared about important things, and each other.

-The Redskins were....
...
........

.....Oh never mind, I can't even DREAM something positive about the Redskins

And I wasn't bored....and wasting time at work I didn't really have....

Caps are 7-1-1 on the road.  THat's pretty awesome, especially when a big chunk of that was one long trip through 3 time zones - that's pretty tough.

Hopefully, that will pay dividends later when the points really matter.

My concern is Caps will have a lull when they go on a run of playing Metro teams when the points will really matter.

Great play so far.  Tighten up the goaltending and D.

They’re on the way up.   In their last 5 games they beat Boston,  Vegas in regulation, ANA in OT and lost the last two in shootouts.

They’re lineup is primarily young (0-3 yr) players and have a slew of AHL prospects.   They also have The Captain at GM and a TON of cap space now and next year.

With their weakest position being goalie, you can bet they’ll be giving Holts a call 😎

and end the regular season with 127 pts
Ovie on pace for 52 goals
Johhny Q on pace for 119 points and a +/- rating of +52
Tom Wilson is on pace for....75 PIM this season  8-0

How is it that the Caps have played three more games than ANY other team in the NHL?

Who designed this schedule?

I realize there will be some variance, but that's just stupid that ONE team has played 3 more (currently) than ALL the other teams, and 4 or 5 more games than several teams.

And the best part of having played all those games is even if the other teams win most of those games in hand we are still on top. The schedule makers do make screwy schedules.  We also seem to have played about double the number of road games of other teams thus far based on the many schedules I looked at.

So many places to post this, but since it's basically generated from my boredom....

Caps current salary cap situation:

With the "trading" of Stepho, and Hags back from LTIR, the Caps currently have cap space of a whopping $761,613
That is with Obrien on the roster and Boyd NOT.  Not sure why Spotrac shows it that way...probably don't update that oftern)
That does leave room for the Caps to bring up Djoos (and send Ziggy down) if they wish.  I hope that doesn't happen, but not sure what the long term plans are for Djoos if Ziggy is working out, which IMO he is.  I'm sure they kept Djoos for a spare guy, and a litany of little unexpected things forced the cap situation to be tighter than anticipated little unexpectedly including Djoos and Stepho's arbitrated increased salaries, and the lower than planned overall cap figure.
Spotrac does not show Boyd on the active roster, but his salary (800k) shows an adjusted cap hit of only $137k.  Not sure how that works.  His contract is "buried" but if he is on active roster I'd assume his hit would be $800k

Also, if Boyd is on the roster, then Obrien would not be. so....

I guess my point was, we cleared $1.05m in cap space moving Stepho, but still don't really have any cap space to work with without moving a significant piece.
But there is room to bring up Djoos and move down Ziggs if they choose to.

Go Caps

(and all this rhetoric would not be necessary if only....

I guess they figured Stepho wasn't going to work out and get something for him before he walked at the end of the season

and it's a little early for a GDT when the game starts at 10:30
Title: Re: The dedicated boredom thread for Rich
Post by: richkrt99 on December 04, 2019, 09:57:43 AM

(moved this from the GDT....which I don't know how to do without just cutting and pasting which apparently does not work well)
So who will be the odd man out when Backy returns?
I really like the chemistry and tenacity of the fourth line with Lepper, Dowd, and Hathy.  I think Boyd has continued to produce and has a bit more offensive upside than Dowd, but I really like the way that line has been playing with Dowd at C.
I think Eller has filled in well at 2C with Backy out.  Eller gets a lot of grief on this board, but I've always like him for what he is; a relatively budget 3C.  Also, he is pretty versatile and can fill in at 2C or 3C or 4C
With all the other guys seeming to produce, Panik needs to start producing or these boards are gonna eat him up.  I have not given up on him....not expecting a 20 goal guy, but 10 would be nice.  He as had some great chances, especially since his return from injury, but he hits a post or gets a bad bounce.  Honestly it reminds me of Eller in his first year or two, where his offensive numbers were really poor (and these boards ate him up) but his level of play certainly seemed better than his production.  He was getting or feeding good offensive chances but nobody was scoring with them.

Good problems to have; so many guys doing well that you have to pick which one to sit.  Certainly better than the alternative - nobody producing and nowhere to turn.

Random boredom data for today...

If playoffs started today, The eastern conference would have 5 Metro division teams (both wildcard spots filled by Metro teams)

It actually takes 364 licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop
