Karl Alzner returns to the NHL after getting recalled by Montreal Canadiens

Karl Alzner’s back in the big leagues, you guys!

After spending 10 games in the AHL, Alzner has been recalled by the Montreal Canadiens for practice Thursday in Brossard, Quebec. According to Sportsnet, the Montreal Canadiens will then travel to Florida to take on the Panthers on Friday.

The former Capitals defenseman was summoned back to the NHL due to an injury to defenseman David Schlemko.

Alzner, who signed a five-year, $23.125 million deal with the Habs in July 2017, was a healthy scratch during Montreal’s season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The scratch ended Alzner’s 622 consecutive games streak. Alzner would only play eight games in the NHL this season until he was put on waivers November 26. After not being claimed by another team, Alzner was sent to the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket. He scored a goal in his first game.

Since then, Alzner has totaled two points in 10 games, including seven shots.

Alzner was the AHL’s highest paid player during his month in the minor leagues.

The former Capitals first-round pick recently said that seeing Washington win the Stanley Cup “was the first time I was happy to see a team that I wasn’t on win.”

More from the Canadiens:

MONTREAL – The Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they had recalled defenseman Karl Alzner from the AHL’s Laval Rocket. He will join the club for practice on Thursday at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard.

Alzner, 30, was reassigned to Laval on November 27. Since then, he has dressed for 10 games with the Rocket, posting two points (1G, 1A) and a plus-4 differential. The rearguard had played eight games for the Canadiens prior to being sent to Laval, registering one assist and a plus-2 differential.

A native of Burnaby, BC, Alzner has played 681 NHL games with the Canadiens and Washington Capitals, recording 20 goals, 110 assists and a plus-56 differential. He was Washington’s first-round pick (5th overall) in 2007.

The Canadiens also announced that defenseman David Schlemko has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to December 20 due to an upper-body injury. Schlemko has suited up 18 times this season for the Habs, registering a pair of assists, both of them on the power play.

Earlier today Isabelle Khurshudyan said that Lewington is the extra D, implying he is still on the roster and is a healthy scratch tonight.  He must have been recalled again.

He is still listed on the roster at https://www.nhl.com/capitals/roster (https://www.nhl.com/capitals/roster)

https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ (https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/)

That was a bit much.  What makes some people so overwhelmed by interacting with another human that happens to be a celebrity? I'd be like "very cool, thanks".  These kids that go insane at a concert because some singer like Beiber, Madonna, or whomever looked in their direction just baffles me.

Is it an incredibly low self esteem that prompts the hysterics? I really can't understand it.

His shifts and minutes are down a little tonight -- he's been closer to the top in ice time among the forwards in many games since his return.  Wonder why that is?

I thought both a boarding call followed by a crosscheck to Niskanen's neck as he was pinned on the boards.

Well the refs have done all they could for the Canes!
 :O=
The refs were bad tonight. Even worse than usual. They called some soft penalties early and let the shit go when Niskanen got taken out. You are right he did get hit into the boards twice on the play. I can't believe he got up from that.

55 minute game almost cost em'.. Don't know why they didn't show a replay of the Kempney penalty, but from rewinding it a few times, it looked like a bullshit call to me. Anywho.. 2 points!

Hope Nisky is ok.. Good to see him skate off!

It was that second effort to hit him after the collision that I thought should be called because that seemed intentional. The initial collision was a hockey play.

I notice that Reirden got a misconduct at 20:00 of the 3rd, served by Backstrom. ::)

I presume it was for some choice words regarding the Niskanen incident.

Our retaliation is was a fuckin joke.  They shoulda taken Bishop OUT for that shit.

Our depth is weak as it is, but the after Calrdon and Niskanen, there aren't many that can eat up that. Up that many minutes and still be a "quality D".  If one, or both of them are out our D is even worse, if that is even possible.

Hopefully they try for a decent D man, for Burt.. His 3 million, plus all the IR time we've had this year, seems like they could probably afford a good one (rental) if they wanted to? Should shop Orlov and his inflated contract but they'd probably get laughed at even more than the Burt deal..

I thought there should have been some kind of retaliation for the hit on Niskanen. But not a fricken thing. Maybe some harsh words from Reirden. He did get a misconduct at the end of the game. I wouldn't blame him for losing his shit. The refs were pathetic all game calling several very soft penalties and then letting that go.

Chara:  rumored to be available, aging, risky with injuries , high dollar, but when healthy still the best shutdown Dman in the league,  He'd be better alone than most of Dpairmgs together, but I doubt GMBetaMale can pull that off.

Mcquaid:  everything were lacking in our DCorps, if NYR will part with him

Martinez: an upgrade in everything, if LAK would part part with him

But let's be honest, in the postsiton of need, with limited access, GMBetaMale isn't good enough to pull this off.

That is who I mentioned a bit ago as supposedly being on the block.  Burakovsky makes sense for LA -- he is a sniper, which they sorely need, being last in the league in scoring and their forward lines made up largely of tough grinders who could get him the puck (which he's never really had a chance to play with here.)  The problem is that Muzzin carries a $4M cap hit and is signed through next year, which may make this offseason's needed signings tough unless the salary cap really jumps.

The other issue is both Phaneuf and,as I just found out. Martinez is on the IR. Until they get back it’s unlikely they trade any D

Another target. if NYR they’d part with him, is Brendan Smith.  He has more strength, thoughness, and aggression than anyone on DCorps, probably more than several combined, and will play the woman’s rule game the Caps love to market.

He’d be about 4amd change, but long so with Bura  and change a good GM could pull it off.

It appears that Niskanen escaped serious injury, he is listed as day to day and will make the trip to Ottawa.  I don’t think we will be trading for any defenseman, I think our young defenseman can fill in for the short term and it sounds like Orpik will be ready to go sometime next week.

We have one little negotiation piece. We could offer Boston a "Get Away  From Wilson Free Card" to prevent him destroying Marchand  :uh-huh: in 13 days (Jan 10) for Marchand's brutal assault in Game 1 on Eller.  Remember, because he did not approve of Eller's celebration after his goal, which was nothing beyond cruising by the Caps bench for high fives as is done every single time a goal is scored these days.

To think this, DCorps is fine, even when healthy, is optimistic to the point fantasy.

There physical weakness, lack of hockey IQ, and greater lack of testosterone has been known and teams will continue to be exploited going forward.

The evidence of this can be seen by our PATHETIC PK, Orlov attempting to fight and leaving the ice a bloody mess, countess turnovers, blown assignments, odd man rushes, and Nissaken getting crushed into the boards the other night.

Without addressing this glaring and exploitable weakness, there gonna need a hell of a lot more thoughts a prayers, and help from the  proverbial hockey gods than they had last year.

Rush,
I just want to say that this nobody  ;) very much thought we could win cup last year.  I was very strangely calm and optimistic unlike previous years where I was frustrated.  Beginning in Late Jan - Early Feb I was feeling very comfortable with our chances. We clearly had the talent for a few years and then last season we seemed to have the resolve to play the right way (all 60 minutes and a solid defense) that we were previously missing, and so I saw us going all the way. I also predicted we could/would dominate the Golden Knights quite early in the playoffs.

I'm with AjR. I always felt our team had a chance last season. We had the talent. We needed to refine our playoff game a bit and needed a bit of luck.
The season before I think the team was very close. We lost to the Pens in 7 games and didn't play a very good defensive series. I thought that was the year that we added the piece that hurt our chances more than helping.

The Caps celebrate EVERY goal and there is nothing wrong IMO with Eller celebrating his goal with the team as they do for every single goal scored all year. Only a bitch like Marchand would take offense.  I understand some of us older folks might remember when goal celebrations were almost non-existent and might see it differently, but nearly all players on the ice today played during the era of  goal celebrations. Get over it I say. If you don't like to lose, then win!
I do agree with your last couple sentences. :snicker: Marchand is THE dirty player many wrongfully try to accuse Wilson of being. I look forward to Jan 10. Marchand has been playing quite well lately and says he wants to want to lose that dirty player identity so he can be remembered for his skills.  Since it's in his genes to be a dick I don't see that ever happening. He will always be remembered as a top douche bag of the NHL.

Well Eller did over celebrate in front of the Bruins bench on a totally meaningless goal. The new generation doesnt seem to frown on those actions like they did in the past. In the 70s or 80s that behavior could have started a line brawl or even better a bench clearing brawl.
I have no problem with Eller getting his ass kicked. I'd kick his ass too.

the 1st and 3rd periods are the short line change periods, it's not like Eller went out of his way to skate in front of the Bruins bench, he had no frikin choice. Every team in this league is going to lay an egg or four during the season. There is absolutely no reason to get upset about a guy that doesn't score much getting excited about scoring, even if it's a 7-0 game. Why is it Ellers fault the Bruins gave up at the end? There are probably three people in the league right now that would get upset about it which puts marchands jackassery in the extream minority, and he should have his ass handed to him for it.

I'm not buying the charge that Eller celebrated in front of the Bruins bench. The benches are separated by a few feet and he headed straight toward the most expedient approach to high five the entire Caps bench, which happened to go past the Bruins. I stand by Eller completely on this one. Like I said, if the Bruins should be offended it should be by their own play in losing 7-0.  I hope Eller scores on Jan 10 and this time really hams it up, this time stopping in front of the Bruins bench offering high fives and maybe the hot stick Ovie move.

And I bet if the roles were reversed. And the Bruins were celebrating a meaningless goal you would expect Wilson to retaliate.
There is such a thing of showing respect for your opponent. To be honest I dont know why you would even celebrate that goal. Would he celebrate like that if the Caps were down 7-1?

Obviously, we have differing opinions. It was Eller's first goal of the season. I'd be excited too. I'd have no issue with an opponent celebrating a goal. No issue at all. He never even looked at the Bruins. He was focused on his team and headed to the Caps bench in the usual manner. I think it shows weakness when you overreact to something so harmless and innocent. It shows weakness when you try to make a big deal out of nothing. In other words, a pussy reaction.  That was not about Eller's celebration. It was about the frustration of being dominated and embarrassed.

That's pretty trivial celebrating a meaningless goal like that. Ive seen guys score their first career goal and not get that excited. I didnt see Laine celebrating like that when he scored his 5th goal in a single game.
   It was a lame celebration

Ya the Bruins got embarrassed that game and so did Eller. Did you notice no one came in to defend him and there was no retaliation?

Maaco, you talk as if all the Caps on the bench, felt like you did! No retaliation? As if the other Caps players were collectively thinking, “boy, I’m glad Marchand got him! We won’t do a thing because Eller deserved it”!! 😂🤣.  Just venturing a guess here but uh......I don’t think they process stuff like you, necessarily!!

I’m more on the side of a PROVEN, dirty, poor sport like Marchand, losing his cool, after their whole team was dominated.

I know you can’t stand Eller, but hell, even when I used to ABHORE Carlson, I didn’t wish him a bloody head! Either way, it may be one way we differ!

From the video, I couldn’t tell if Eller intentionally taunted Marchand, or not!!
Worst case, even if I was an “Eller hater”, type of Caps fan, I’d say, Marchand took exception to Eller, Eller’s not a fighter, Eller got bloodied, and WHATEVER, real or imagined, price was paid! End of the fricken story! It’s DONE!   You seem to relish it!

I will add that if Marchand gets retaliated against, coming up with Boston, than your posts point will be totally flattened.

I doubt there's any retaliation.. Only real injury to Eller was his pride. Maybe Lewington or DSP or someone could chirp up Marchand and see if he'll go, but I wouldn't count on us (especially not Wilson) chasing him around/cornering him, like Boston did to us that time..

* Good grief, didn't realize Marchand was such a shrimp.. We have no one that small who can/will fight, that I know of.. Prolly be best for Eller to sniff some salts and go it alone!  :snicker:

the retaliation that needs to be done is Helen manning-up, going after Bergeron and beating Begeron til he bleeds

Til he does that, how can anyone respect his integrity or manhood?

You are  misunderstanding the point. I dont care who the player. There is a line you don't cross. Eller crossed that line. I'm not condoning what Marchand did but I understand why he did it.
Maybe you should have watched Don Cherry lastnight. He ripped team Canada foir running up the score and over celebrating in a 14-0 win over Denmark. He feels they disrespected Denmark. And I agree. It is a very similar incident except the Danish team didnt retaliate. I'm sure they weren't happy about it.
So dont make this about Eller. Its about an idiot that disrespected their opponent. It doesnt matter who it was.

Just watched the replay again. Looks like Eller and somebody on the Boston bench traded some smack talk after Eller had finished his high fives with the boys! Eller said after the fight, that he will “handle it” himself.
Eller doesn’t ever fight. Marchand is an experienced fighter! Experience will win, almost always!
I will say Marchand, especially with his size, is a tough little guy! But he is a somewhat proud dirty player. I could live with that even, but he complains about getting slew-footed, but does it himself, too!

I think Ellers comments, were said because its embarrassing for him, and he had to say SOMETHING.
If HE personally retaliates on Marchand, I’d be surprised, although he sort of alluded to it.  He better get a crash course in fighting, though, if he’s gonna go there! LOL

I was mainly addressing your comment about the Caps bench not retaliating, and you suggesting THAT,  as some sort of proof that they, like you, felt Eller was taunting or overcelebrating.

I checked several videos, and, at best, can only get footage of Eller and the Boston bench trading some quick remarks, after he high fives with the Caps! I’m open for any other footage, if it’s out there, but with what is shown, you can’t tell if Eller is responding back to some A-hole on Boston’s bench, who may have said something first, OR if Eller just taunted them out of the blue!  You just can’t tell!

If he’s just responding back, then that’s normal, and NOT taunting!
Like I said,  if there’s other video, I’d be open to see it, showing definitive taunting!
If so, then I’ll stand corrected!

Until then, it’s more likely, in my mind, that a frustrated Boston player, (maybe even Marchand), said something to Eller, who not only doesn’t fight, but is probably not much of an instigator either, as they often go hand in hand! Eller said something back. Marchand, (knowing Eller can’t fight well), probably saw easy pickins, and took it to him, at the next opportunity, because Marchand, unapologetically, is known for playing dirty!

I would, however, like to see Eller try to repay Marchand! Just for his pride!  We’ll see, but not holding my breath!
Additionally, Caps could not retaliate against Marchand, because he left the game immediately, and never returned before the game ended!

Does anyone not respect Nicky for never going after Bourque? He's not a fighter.. Eller's not a fighter.. If all it took was being 6'+ to be a good fighter, we'd be the bullies of the NHL.. I'd still like to see him try though, but doubt he will.

Not being a fighter isn’t an excuse.

The fact is, The Caps, sans Willie, are the bullied, not the bullies.  The teams general absence of fighting ability, aggression, and retaliation is exploited and it will only get worse.  All the while Monumental Entertainment and zealots who believe them, and like woman’s-rules faggy hockey will cry about “rules” and the “new NHL”  and blame puck luck when half the team is on IR.

Look, if a goalie can’t make stick-side saves, teams shoot stick side. If a player is slow, put fast skaters against him, so if players are soft and can’t fight, intimidate and attack/fight them.

Even with Lewington, this will only get worse for the Caps.
