Evgeny Kuznetsov calls Braden Holtby a ‘god’

In a game that the Capitals likely had no business winning, Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made 36 saves against the Buffalo Sabres, leading his team to a 2-1 victory.

On one sensational play, an ultra-aggressive Holtby left his cage and slid out to the blue line to stop a breakaway attempt. Later in the night, Holtby over-extended his left leg trying to make a save to the far side of the net. After getting a visit by the Caps trainer, a hobbled Holtby remained in the game for the final two minutes as Buffalo pulled their goaltender for an extra man. Facing a barrage of shots, Holtby stopped them all.

Washington was outshot 37-24 by the Sabres. Holtby’s sensational play earned him first star of the night. He’s won eight of his last 11 starts.

After the game, Evgeny Kuznetsov was asked by the Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan about Holtby’s play. Kuzy, like a Twitter personality thirsty for retweets, called Holtby a “god.”

Kuzy added that Holtby was “always saving our ass.”

You could even say…

Kuznetsov and Holtby have come a long way since 2010 Development Camp.

“He was outstanding all game long,” head coach Todd Reirden said after the game.

Holtby will backup Pheonix Copley in Ottawa before getting four days off before his next likely start, Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Wow! This is a bizarre coincidence. It was before the Canes game where Ovie got  his second consecutive hat trick that I had the thought, "What if some dumb ass fan grabbed a prized hat off the head of another fan and tossed it onto the ice. I know you don't get these hats back and so this would really suck. Then today I see this story in the Washington post. Some douche bag did exactly that when Ovie got his 2nd hat trick in a row.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/12/20/after-years-two-combat-zones-hat-trick-mission-find-beloved-nats-cap/ (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/12/20/after-years-two-combat-zones-hat-trick-mission-find-beloved-nats-cap/)

After 14 years, two combat zones and a hat trick, a mission to find a beloved Nats cap

(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/cX5ZNCmKPCJuswtxlfS0B_58bK0=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/JVPCYHM6QJA3FMRAL45JHS4EYM.jpg)

Last Friday, 38-year-old Caps fan Ken Brasington and his wife traveled from Charlotte to Raleigh, N.C., to see their favorite team play the Hurricanes. Midway through the third period, Alex Ovechkin scored to give Washington a 5-4 lead, notching his second consecutive hat trick in the process. It was cause for celebration, but the rest of the night, Brasington later said, was “a real nightmare.”

The Capitals ultimately prevailed in a shootout, but by that point, Brasington’s mind was elsewhere. As Ovechkin celebrated his third goal, hats rained down from the PNC Arena stands, which featured a healthy contingent of fans rooting for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Before Brasington knew what happened, someone removed the fitted Nationals hat from his head and flung it toward the ice. Brasington was momentarily relieved when his tattered headwear, which he purchased at the Lids store at Potomac Mills in late 2004, landed short of the glass, one section over. Then he watched as another Capitals fan picked up the hat and tossed it again.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, there it goes,’" said Brasington, who grew up in Stafford and has been a Capitals fan since 1985. “I just watched it on the ice.”

After the game, Brasington sought out a Hurricanes employee who might be able to help reunite him with a hat that was much more than a hat to the Marine Corps veteran. When told that retrieving his hat was impossible, Brasington explained that he’d worn the hat around the world as a government contractor after serving in the Marines, including three trips to Iraq and two to Afghanistan. It was a reminder of places he’d been and friends he’d lost. Brasington needed his hat with the curly 'W' on the front and block ‘Nationals’ on the back, and not only because he’d never managed to find another one that fit quite as well.

“I think, total, that thing has seen 33 countries, four IEDs, and two combat zones,” Brasington said.

Before exiting the arena, Brasington left his contact information with a guest services representative, who said she would see what she could do. On the walk back to his hotel, a despondent Brasington called a former colleague from D.C., who suggested he get in touch with The Post’s Capitals beat reporter extraordinaire, Isabelle Khurshudyan.

Late Friday night, Brasington laid out his predicament in an email to Khurshudyan, who made no guarantees, but offered to help. Khurshudyan then emailed Pace Sagester, the Hurricanes' manager of communications and team services, who previously spent four years working for the Capitals. Sagester exchanged emails with Brasington. Meanwhile, Sagester’s colleague, Mike Sundheim, called the head of the ice crew that had been responsible for clearing the ice after Ovechkin’s third goal. It turned out the hats, which some teams offer to the player who recorded the hat trick or donate to a local charity, were still in a large bag in the bowels of PNC Arena.

Saturday was an off day for the Hurricanes, but Sagester and Sundheim arrived before practice on Sunday to search for Brasington’s hat. It wasn’t hard to locate.

“There was a good amount of hats in the bag, but his hat was right on top,” Sagester said. “From the way that he had described it to us, we pretty much knew right away that that was the hat. We dug through a couple other hats just to make sure, but that was pretty much the only Nats hat. It’s super beat up; the bill has, like, chunks missing out of it. It’s almost pink it’s so faded. It’s not something I would want to put on my head, but it’s special to him.”

My friend, who worked for Verizon center, said you can pick up the hat trick hats the next day or two IF the player hasn't taken it for themselves already.  But I'm glad they guy got his hat back, what a jerk whoever took it off his head and threw it.

Finding your hat among thousands must be an enormous task, especially if it's at a home game.

I've been trying to come up with a good term for an awesome Copley stop.
I can't believe it took me so long to come up with this one.
If anyone cares to use it you just have to type 1stop with a ":" colon on either side and the server will replace it with the graphic.

This isnt a very exciting game.

It beats losing going into the Christmas break.  I like seeing how sharp our passing is. What I really don't like is the job our defense is NOT doing in front of Copley. Without Copley's great play this would be more exciting I suppose.

Funny thing about Copley is that he is making good saves but he hasn't controlled many rebounds. Some of the scoring chances he could have prevented himself.

OK, I got it fixed.  For some reason the server does not like the four exclamation marks in the file name. I have used three with no problem, but four is a problem.  The graphic is fine, but the underlying filename had to be changed.

To use this graphic type :1 stop: without the space between the "1" and "s".

For Holtby you can use :70 stop: again without the space and you'll get :70stop:

So you see the pond hockey your so in love with has not won us 5 cups?  That you did some analysis and saw we hadn’t been past the second round in 20 years?  During that time we won three Presidents Trophies, without getting past the second round.  Yet, they do it once against players and coaches that have beat them regularly, and assume it’s the result of talent and style and not an anomaly?

You just like your entertainment, and have little awareness about the game.

Well DC if you want to get technical. We didnt win a cup playing pond hockey. We were definitely a pond hockey during most of the regular season but the playoffs we a very different system. It was defensive play, goaltending and hitting that won us the cup. We played the game the way it was meant to be played.

I think DC would admit that the Caps are playing well. We are still giving up way too many high danger chances.
Not as bad lastnight. The Sens had some good looks early but as the game went on the majority of shots came from the outside. The game against Buffalo we had no business winning. There have been a fair amount of those games this season.
Right now we are winning most of our games just because we have better talent. We aren't winning because we are playing a structured system.

You and I know that (which is my point), but some zealots clearly think that our 18 players just go out to score goals and if they score more then their 18 we win.

There’s no question that Trotz our coaching the other four coaches won that Cup, though that these changes came after he was all but sure he wouldn’t come back where made.

But to assume Reidon can do that, other coaches won’t be prepared for that switch, and our players can execute it again. should it be tried is so ridiculous and naive it bores on fantasy

I definitely agree with you, Maaco, about the Boudreau style is like pond hockey! I see him as one of the coaches that was thought to be “cutting edge”, as far as the new direction that NHL hockey started taking, and becoming what it is today!  I actually consider that as a negative on Boudreau, and believe his softer, speedy, offense oriented teams, will never win a cup! (Although haven’t followed Minnesota)

Despite all the times we have disagreement, Maaco, it’s kinda funny to realize, sometimes, just how much I have in common with your basic hockey philosophy, or at least what I gather from your posts and our private conversations we’ve had.  I’ll include DC also, in the same way!

I do, however, differ with you and DC on the current pond hockey direction of the Caps! Or at least in one aspect of it! I’ll try to explain.

I’m more with Mick on this, in that, I’m not really seeing any obvious pond hockey either! I see a high scoring game sometimes, with some seat-of-the-pants type playing, going on, but this is prevalent in ALL of NHL hockey! Not Capitals specific.

I also see nights where we hustle, show more defensive responsibility, and win dominantly with a 2 or 3 goal game.

What I’ve MAINLY seen though, from the Caps team, over the last 5 or 6 weeks, is a quality that ALL coaches revere highly, and that is, an ability to “find a way to win”, while facing all kinds of different situations, week to week.
I’m talking about finding a way, whilst playing through injuries, suspensions, PK and PP issues, defensive issues, road stretches, home stretches, goalies thrown under the bus, goalies not having a good game, resets and line rotations, etc. You get my drift!
In short they are absolutely finding a way to “get ‘er done”!!👍

So I’m a happy Caps fan, presently! I’ve always been a FAN, just not always the happiest! But especially happy ever since we won the cup!

Oddly, I do “get” a lot of what DC says about the Monumental marketing stuff. I’m not at the same level of disgust that he is with it, but as a season ticket holder, I feel, FOR SURE, the pinch of the way they bastardize the crap out of it!  I just try to separate out that part of the business, away from what happens on the ice!

Softer, pussified, less physical, wimpier, lower grit, less fundamental, more randomness, hockey, is what I see, like a plague, across the ENTIRE NHL, bar none!! THIS is where WE are totally aligned with each other!!
Pond hockey, to describe the direction that our Caps team is heading toward?? Not really there with it, fellas.

Merry Christmas folks!

The team is playing better recently. We still give up too many high scoring chances because we aren't playing with structure. And is pretty much what pond hockey is.
Did you forget some of the games that we gave up 5 or 6 goals. What about the game against the Ducks when we blew a 5-1 lead. And we have had several games that looked good on paper because we only gave up a goal or 2. But it was our goaltending that was good. Not our defense. We are not a good defensive team, we suck on the pk. Its because we aren't playing with structure. Too many times I see guys wandering around the dzone watching the play.
We have been very hard on our dcore this year. They havent played well but they aren't getting the support from the forwards that they did in the past. Quite often forwardscare leaving the zone early to try to create offense and in doing so they are ignoring their defensive responsibility. We are winning with skill more than structure. That's pond hockey to me.

I’m cool, Maaco, with how you define “pond hockey”.
I was actually surprised that there is an actual definition at Wikipedia, but it’s more technical, because there are actually pond hockey leagues, all around North America!  I never knew that!
The definition they use isn’t even close to how we’ve been using it recently on the board. So I’m good with using it the way it’s been used here, for the sake of discussion.

I think of “pond hockey”, as a reference, in the same way we say “street ball”, for basketball!
Meaning both hockey and B-ball, being played without a lot of structure, as you mention, but also marked with lots of scoring, low emphasis on executing pre-planned, play set-ups, etc.  In short, less skilled, disorganized, amateurish, type play.

I’m an old-schooler about sports, appreciating and respecting, good work ethics, sportsmanship, physicality, hustle, professionalism, and practicing good FUNDAMENTALS!! You know this about me, as I believe we have similar sports philosophies. OK, so if you’re with me so far, then read on!

I submit to you the idea that, BY COMPARISON,  to the older style hockey, that we BOTH say we respect and admire,  that the newer age hockey style, could be viewed as “pond hockey like”.  Again, by comparison to the older stuff!  By ALL nhl teams today! Some a bit more, than others, but nonetheless, seen throughout the entire NHL.

I mean, where is all this consistent, organized, structure, on ANY team, that is apparently, reliably executed, day in, and day out, that you seem to be inferring, EXISTS, on some other team, somewhere?, that enables you to compare the Caps, to them, as something WE should strive for???
WHERE THE HELL IS IT? ???      IT DOESNT EXIST, nowadays!!

Do teams practice good fundamental play and structure, on both sides of the ice?  Yes, the successful ones do it more often, than NOT!  The unsuccessful ones, LESS often than NOT!  None of these teams “have it all down”.  It’s basically that simple, IMO.

Since the “newer hockey” style is here, and prevalent throughout the league, (unfortunately, for the sport, LOL), that means today’s style does NOT have to be called “pond hockey”, AT ALL,  because this style is the NEW STANDARD, which makes it be able to be referred to as RELATIVE to itself.  That is, if everybody’s DOING IT, then it essentially defines NHL hockey, as it is TODAY!

NO, I don’t frickin like it, but I’ve chose to accept it on ITS OWN TERMS.

So the BIG point I’m trying to make is that if we use TODAYS hockey standards, relative to ALL the NHL teams,  the frickin CAPS are kickin ass!!  And they are in good company with teams like, Tampa, Toronto, and Winnipeg, to name a few!

Pond hockey, to describe the direction that our Caps team is heading toward?? Not really there with it, fellas.

Merry Christmas folks!

You ever watch the mights on ice during the first intermission where there are only really two position players(the goalies) and it's just a big herd following the puck around the ice? That's pond hockey

Did you forget some of the games that we gave up 5 or 6 goals. What about the game against the Ducks when we blew a 5-1 lead. And we have had several games that looked good on paper because we only gave up a goal or 2. But it was our goaltending that was good. Not our defense.

Those games we gave up a bunch and blew the lead, were also partly because the goaltending was poor and the PK gave up multiple goals.. I can't really argue that we've given up high scoring chances, but I don't see it as a product of pond hockey.. In todays game you have to score, which other teams are gambling to do as well. We give as good as we get, imo, on the scoring chances.  Hopefully it calms down and gets more structured as the season goes, but with the way their calling games and goalie equipment getting smaller, more skilled players, etc. it's a product of "is what it is" imo.. Im just hoping we can cure the special teams issues. I see that as more an issue than the style of game we're playing.

Sounds like you are buying into the offense first system.

Yes we are and I am damn proud of it.   I have followed this team from its beginning and winning the Stanley Cup last season was beyond anthing I could imagine.  Even if we win another in my lifetime it will never top last season.  All the frustation from years past just evaporated.

And the chances of us staying champs are vanishing if we continue to sacrifice the goalies for stats and marketing.

Last year is done, right now we’re just an offensive only team that relies on the goalies for all the defense, ya know the kind rarely gets outta thd first round of the playoffs.

I don't know, I'm still pretty damn frustrated with the officiating

which would explain our strellar PK and roster moves to support it 😡
