At 31, Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom bided his time for a career year

(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/yl24XotUqYKkem-IPffaWsiZopg=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/POHSI2HVBMI6RGOCZ7FG7T3BBQ.jpg)

A hockey player’s prime is supposed to be his early- to mid-20s, and center Nicklas Backstrom was no different with his career-best 101-point campaign coming when he was 22 — nearly a decade ago. As Backstrom matured, his offensive numbers declined while his all-around game became more refined. He has been as important to the Washington Capitals for his shutdown role as he is for his production.

Why he might be experiencing a renaissance at 31 is harder to explain. It’s not that he’s old, even by professional hockey’s standards, but he hasn’t gotten any faster. And while his shot has always been underrated, it didn’t drastically improve over the summer. Backstrom figures his mind could be more at ease with the Capitals coming off a Stanley Cup championship last season.

“I’m feeling good,” Backstrom said with a shrug. “I’m enjoying hockey a lot. Given last year’s outcome, I think a lot of the guys are feeling good. There’s no more, really, pressure. There’s pressure in a different way now, so that’s probably something good. . . . You don’t have to think about it every day. That’s obviously a good thing for an athlete. Just kind of let loose and play your own style.”

Whatever it is, Backstrom might be playing the best hockey of his career more than a decade into it. With nine goals and 23 assists through 25 games after Friday night’s hat trick, Backstrom is averaging a career-high 1.28 points per game. He has tallied at least one point in 12 of his past 14 games. Maybe the production tapers off some as the season goes on, but considering Backstrom is almost exclusively tasked with playing against the opponent’s top line every game, his offensive output to start the season has been impressive.

“For me, this has been the strongest he’s played going on my fifth year here,” Capitals Coach Todd Reirden said. “Just the consistency of what he plays, the two-way game, the plays he’s making to set guys up. He’s shooting the puck as well as he has over the years. He’s had a really strong year. For me, it’s the best I’ve seen him play through 20-plus games in the start of a season. He’s been a huge catalyst for why we’ve had success.”

In another reminder of how long he has played in the NHL, Backstrom eclipsed 600 assists earlier this season, and with his three-assist performance against the New York Islanders on Monday night, he passed Peter Bondra for second place on the franchise’s all-time points list behind only Alex Ovechkin. Honored during Friday’s game, Backstrom raised a hand in acknowledgment before winning a draw on the penalty kill.

He is so consistently on the score sheet that his contributions — aside from the point production, he averages the second-most even-strength time on ice among Capitals forwards while playing in all situations — can often get taken for granted. And then there’s the way he goes about his business on the ice. While his saucer passes have been known to show up on a few highlight reels, he rarely dazzles because he doesn’t need to. There’s a subtlety to his game that comes from an indifference to the attention he would get if he played with more flair.

“Sometimes he's just making a simple play, and that simple play is the absolute right play,” forward Andre Burakovsky said.

“He slows the game down,” goaltender Braden Holtby said. “Some players can do that. They have that ability. You never see him full-speed sprinting for pucks or anything like that cause he’s always calculating stuff and protecting the puck. He’s probably one of the best in the world at that and he makes it look easy.”

Even with center Evgeny Kuznetsov back in the lineup after a concussion sidelined him for more than two weeks, Reirden has kept Backstrom on the top line beside Ovechkin and right wing Tom Wilson after the chemistry among that trio helped Washington reel off seven straight wins and vault to the top of the Metropolitan Division standings. The Capitals have scored 30 goals during this winning streak, and Backstrom has been on the ice for 12 of them.

When he recorded 33 goals and 68 assists during the 2009-10 season, Backstrom was clearly talented, but both he and the Capitals weren’t as disciplined defensively as they are now. He has had the most defensive-zone starts and taken the most defensive-zone faceoffs on the team, a show of trust from Reirden. But that kind of deployment hurt his production a year ago, when he had 13 fewer points and six fewer goals through 25 games than he has now.

“Maybe a little bit,” Backstrom said. “But that’s something I always wanted to be, a two-way player, anyway.”

Backstrom knows this points pace could deteriorate with one midseason slump. But he is rejuvenated and having fun for now, and for the Capitals, that’s just a bonus on top of what he has always provided them.

“He’s the backbone of our team,” Holtby said. “He’s who we run off, who we look to in times of trouble as a calming influence. He shows up every game to play a complete game, defensively, offensively, [penalty kill], [power play]. He’s one of the best players in the game right now. Obviously he’s underrated — everyone knows that now. But he’s special.”

It might be because the team is now playing so well and with Oshie's head banging history they now decided to give him extra time to recoup.

I'm liking Backstrom more than Kuzy on the first line. Glad Reirden left that Aline when Kuzy returned.

Arj is there away to change the ignore user function? Its pretty useless if the member you are trying to ignore can read your messages and he can read yours.
Most messageboards if you have a member on ignore you can see his or her posts. Infact the members name doesn't even show up in the board.

That's right i did quote you which is exactly why I asked if the ignore function could be changed. I shouldnt be able to quote your posts but I can.  I dont want you to be able to read my posts and I dont want the ability to read yours. In fact I dont want to even see your name in the board.
That's the way other messageboards work. This ignore function is pretty useless.

That one still has me talkin to myself.. Just god awful, bad, stupid, retarded.. How do you give up 5 straight goals? At home? In the last 25 minutes of the game you were leading 5-1? And not even get a single fucking point? Oof...  That kinda  :poop:  can spin ya out. Be interesting to see how they respond, especially if they get behind. Could be the start of a nice losing streak.  :-\

No. I'm saying I dont want you reading or responding to any of my posts. Isnt that the point of the ignore function. I was completely fine not responding to any of your posts. I really had no clue you could read my posts until I actually looked at one of your posts and noticed that you were responding to something I said. How many other times did you do that?
Anyway the function is pretty useless if you are going to be reading and responding to my posts. That's why I asked about it. Oh well I guess there is no point in using it.

Lol ya I dont know. Our 4th line was probably our best line. Our defense was horrendous. The Orlov Niskanen pairing is an adventure every time they are in the ice and are in the ice for most goals against.if course Orlov was in the box for 2 goals. Kempny ball had a couple bad plays in this game. Eller had a costly turnover in the gwg. Instead of vdumping the puck in or passing to a teammate he tried to get cute and got stripped of the puck by Getzlaf. Kuzy did have a nice goal tonight but he did turnover the puck a lot on our pp. And Holtby didnt have his greatest game either. Bad game.

second question:  the refs know the only real rule:  Referees Discretion.  Just make it up as you go.

Yep, Mick. One of those gut rippers that may have more significance than meets the eye!
I mean, the loss itself, AND, even the pathetic manner in which it played out, are one thing, as the typical philosophical responses, by coaches, players, and fans, is that we “forget this one”, or “you just have to keep pressing on”, etc., etc. To be fair, these are all good, and time tested ways to recover and move on from such a depressing and demoralizing loss like this.

My concern is in the timing of this loss! Meaning that the overall team dynamic was just starting to show some consistent positives. One of them being that we seemed to be learning how to “generally”, hold onto a lead, and WIN! Especially over the last month of play.
Secondly, our PK has been steadily improving!
Third. Holtz seemed to be getting better!
I would rather have seen a complete low-energy game from the Caps from start to finish, than
this on-again/off-again, switching of energy and discipline, when we are ahead!

It’s never accurate to cast blame on a single player for a loss, and I do firmly believe that, but Orlov played the greater significant role here to the loss factor. Whether the first boarding penalty was legit or not, you CANNOT risk getting the second one! ALSO, we rarely get such an easily obvious view on what puck watching IS, by a defender, NEAR OR IN THE CREASE, as a goal is being scored! Orlov was a poster boy example of that today!

Trying to pull any positive out of this, it is amazing, the way this season parallels last season, in its overall flow, so far. I can remember a few odd “belly-hurt” type losses, during the ascension of the teams heavy improvement period, all through November and December, and through to the all-star break! I’m happy to say that through their several win streaks,  they successfully “shook off“ these type of losses, and generally proceeded well forward!
THAT is why this mini road trip will be interesting.  Whether or not that shake off ability is in them now is what we’re about to see!! C’mon boys!

Everyone, this one is my fault.

At 4-1 I thought, "Caps score the next goal and we're good - Anaheim scores and we've got a game."

Well, the Caps scored and I mistakenly and naively thought we had this one in the bag.

I mistakenly thought that THIS post-SC champion Caps team wouldn't blow a 4 goal lead.

I mistakenly thought that THIS post-SC champion Caps team wouldn't blow a 4 goal lead at home.

I mistakenly thought that THIS post-SC champion Caps team wouldn't blow a 4 goal lead at home with less than 1/2 the game remaining.

I mistakenly thought that THIS post-SC champion Caps team was different than the pre-SC champion teams, which would more than regularly have long mental lapses and do shit like this.

So, my apologies.   I will never, ever believe any Caps lead is safe again.   I have re-learned my lesson.

don’t worry man, you didnt blow the four goal lead 🤣😡

This type of shit happens way two often, this year and last year), to continually chalk it up as “mental lapses”, “bad games”, “early in the season”, at least we have ‘A’ Cup etc etc.

This is who they are. They won  the right 16 games last year, but there where also very ugly games in the playoffs too.  Champions, elites, dominate  and teams building dynasties have bad games, give up 4+, maybe aren’t in the top of the confrence every month, but it sure as hell doesn’t happen to them as much, or as badly as it does to the Caps.

After that fiasco of a game yesterday, we at least have one bright spot, according to Rierden, and I tend to agree with him.

Our fourth line combo of Dowd, Jaskin, and Stephenson! Just took a look at a few stats. Jaskin, most notably, has moved into 3rd place on the team in total hits at 51!  He also has the best giveaway/takeaway ratio, at 10 tka/ 2gva! That’s 4 takes for every 1 giveaway!  That 80% to the positive! Early out,  I’m liking me some Jaskin!

Dowd is #2 at 13tka/7gva! That’s 13 out of 20! or  65% positive!
Hell, even Stephenson is in the + at 8tka/7gva!

Both Jaskin and Dowd are still #1, and #2, respectively in hits per TOI, for entire team!!

Stephenson scores a goal also, and the chemistry is starting to look good betwen these three!
Rierden is now looking at a line playing with more physicality, and best puck turnover numbers, hands down, than any other line!
This is how you keep your damn job!! Hats off to our 4th line!
