Eddie Olczyk on Tom Wilson’s ‘heavy’ suspension, respect for Ovechkin and Cup hangover
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/4CG-ueJZFjqt2-6P5W-cZxaLfDQ=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/ZKVZKACZHAI6RGEJA66MCMT7JM.jpg)
Eddie Olczyk, right, will be in the booth for Penguins-Capitals on Wednesday night. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
The Capitals are 6-4-3 early in their campaign to defend the Stanley Cup and host the rival Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena. Eddie Olczyk will be in town to call the game on NBC Sports Network and ahead of the showdown he talked to The Washington Post about the mixed early returns on the Capitals, whether Tom Wilson’s suspension may have been too harsh and why he’s always telling players to keep their sticks on the ice.
The Post: Let’s start with the Caps, who are off to a somewhat sluggish start. Is the Stanley Cup hangover real?
Eddie Olczyk: I think they’re going to be smiling when we come into the building because I think they’re a perfect two for two on Wednesday night. They’ll be happy to see us. . . . One of the reasons they separated themselves from everyone else last season was their depth and the scoring they got from their bottom six guys. With injuries or suspensions, it’s been a lot tougher for them. . . . At the end of the day, there is something to [the Cup hangover]. I can just speak from experience [winning] in New York in 1994. We made a bunch of changes. It’s the last time a coach left after a Cup. . . . But in the end, I think they’ll be fine, and if they get back into the playoffs, that’s all they want regardless of where they finish.
The Post: You mentioned injuries and suspension, which leads us to Tom Wilson. What do you make of his suspension?
Olczyk: He’s an integral part of their team. He’s a guy that’s got good skill level, a guy that can skate, a guy that can kill penalties, a guy that can play with world-class players and a guy that crosses the line every once in a while. He can drop the gloves; we know that. Intimidation will always be a part of the game. You know when he’s on the ice, and he has the ability to run you into the sixth or seventh row. Does he cross the line at times? Yes, absolutely. On the suspension, I thought it was a little heavy, the number. Certainly into the double-digits [made sense], there’s no way around that, but that’s the way it is. . . . Would 30 other teams in the league want him? Yeah, I think they would have both hands up.
One other thing I will say, and it wasn’t talked about a lot, is the prior game [when Wilson’s hit earned him a suspension] Robert Bortuzzo elbowed Michael Kempny. Bortuzzo got suspended a couple of games. So I think when you look at how that game went in St. Louis and Bortuzzo running around — I think he drilled someone from behind in that game, too. Wilson did not play in that game. You look at that and say, if you’re taking liberties on some of our players, you know. . . . I thought [the number of games] was a little high, but I wouldn’t argue that it should have been 12 or 15 games.
The Post: Some Capitals fans have felt over the years that your colleague Mike Milbury has been a bit of an Alex Ovechkin critic. Does winning a Cup change the way people feel about him around the league?
Olczyk: Regardless of if it’s Mike or anyone else, the Caps had underachieved for a long time. Once you win, you have the bragging rights against anyone who wants to be a critic. So yeah, that’s out the window for [Ovechkin]. But what I was most impressed about during the playoffs with him was his ability to be much more selective in his physical play. Saving energy instead of hit everything and forecheck everywhere. He stepped up on the biggest stage with the most pressure and I couldn’t be happier for him.
The Post: Is Milbury going to be nicer to him now?
Olczyk: [laughs] You’d have to talk to Mike on that.
The Post: Anybody that watches you has heard you talk on the air about how important it is for players to keep their sticks on the ice. Is there a story behind the advice or a coach who instilled it in you?
Olczyk: The backstory is as a player I just tried to always have a good stick — offensively or defensively. Then when I was coaching in Pittsburgh it was something that I thought was very important. Coaches emphasize this all the time. . . . Sometimes players have brain cramps, they think they’re with a guy and all of a sudden the puck is in the back of the net. . . . You never know when the puck’s going to hit you. Coaches preached it to me. I tried to live it as a player. . . . It’s like a guy covering a wide receiver but his hands are around his waist. You got to get those hands up. It’s the opposite in hockey, but it’s the same kind of teaching point. Teams spend $285 on those sticks; you better get your money’s worth. Get your stick on the ice!
The Post: Give us a health update. How are you feeling? (Olczyk is cancer-free after battling Stage 3 colon cancer.)
Olczyk: Feel healthy, feel like I’m back to normal. Feel lucky that I’m back on my feet, doing what I love to do. Just got back from the Breeders' Cup, so back in my hockey and horse racing mode. Everything is looking up.

This sucks, i forgot about the Wednesday night game of the week with Penis McGuire behind a player. Should be interesting though, Caps are trying for their first win streak, 2 in a row, and the Hens will be trying not to lose 5 in a row.
Last game the radio and tv were damn near synced, I can only hope that's the case again tonight
-
FYI. Going into the game tonight the Penguins have the exact same record as the Caps.
-
Oh good GAWD. Its an NBC game?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

-
At least we get great 5.1 sound back with Penis McGuire tonight.
-
That's a pretty weak penalty call. Hope thats not a sign of things to come
-
And then they miss the high stick. Its going to be a bad night by the refs.
-
That's a pretty weak penalty call. Hope thats not a sign of things to come
You obviously haven't heard the new unwritten rule, "no love taps".
BTW, where's the double-minor for the high stick on Oshie?

Terrible missed call.
-
Agreed. Terrible missed calls so far. One on Oshie and one just Now on Eller.
-
Agreed. Terrible missed calls so far. One on Oshie and one just Now on Eller.
Yup. I saw that.
-
this two sets of rules crap is getting old
-
Good job by referees!
-
it's about fukin time this squad stood up for Holts
-
Haglin only pulls that’s because there is no fear of a Wilson freight train.
-
I went back on the DVR to watch that play again and IMO Kessel clearly took dive to draw that penalty on Vrana. I don't blame him for complaining about that call. Penguins have good diving coaches.
-
Embellishment on holtby?!? Are these commentators high?
-
Of course NBC wants a penalty on Holtby. These guys are a complete embarrassment.
-
Poor execution on that :pppp:
-
hens are staring to take a few liberties, always happens when they know the jackass zebras won't call anything on them
-
(https://galactichub.com/caps/referee-penguins.jpg)
-
That was a quick eye replacement on Oshie.
-
:phew:
-
Geez brutal play by Orlov. I think Carlson just saved a goal.
-
hens are staring to take a few liberties, always happens when they know the jackass zebras won't call anything on them
Yep “Cindy breaks a 4 game loosing streak by beating the defending Champs on the road” would make great headline for the NHL
-
Given the number of clanks off the post, we need to score NOW. OTHERWISE WE LOSE THE GAME 3-0 or worse.
-
??? there's no Penis behind the glass

-
Bura and Connolly have damn near lost any respect they learned after the playoffs. They have been wastes off sweaters and cap room all year.
-

Didnt know you were such a Crosby lover.
-
Boy, NBC not even trying to disguise their OralGasms' for the Hens.
-
Bura and Connolly have damn near lost any respect they learned after the playoffs. They have been wastes off sweaters and cap room all year.
Connolly is producing a bit. He does have the odd decent shift. I'm not a fan of him but vwe really dont have anyone better. Burakovsky is a total joke. How is this guy still on the roster.

:8z:
-
nice pp :P
-
Ovi scores!
-
Good looking goal!!
-
Good looking goal!!
Nice pass, great shot.
-
nice pk

:pk:
-
now that looks like it could be a penalty shot
-
keystone Caps on that pp
-
now that looks like it could be a penalty shot
Oh? What did I miss?
-
:hhpp:
-
next time they get the chance the Hens should put Johnson on the pp
-
Oh? What did I miss?
Guentzel tripped Stephenson who almost got a shorty wraparound goal. We blew the ensuing PP.
Actually, it was DeSmith that tripped him, but they called Guentzel.
-
Let me guess. The zebras will find a way to make this offsetting penalties.
-
This rosters testosterone, bench press, adrenaline, and backbone is all but non-existent
That shoulda cost that faggot Malkin his fuckin jaw
-

I saw that play. They would never call a penalty shot when a player is going around the net.
-

Perfect match for the Hens!
-

it should be a Caps PP, holy crap it is
-
Perfect match for the Hens!
yeah, at least there’s one team that won’t punch them back

cheesus man. The Caps better take some of those little blue pills at intermission
-

cheesus man. The Caps better take some of those little blue pills at intermission
Huh! So they can join Orpik on the injured list? ;)
-
Holtby is keeping us in this game. He has been our best player and it isnt even close.
-
because their pp is weak tonight
-
Orlov is having another suspect game. What is wrong with him this year? He has been terrible defensively and has done nothing offensively. His production this season consists of 2 assists one of those a secondary assist on an empty net goal.
-

Kuzy is having a terrible game tonight. If he doesn't go the PP is not nearly as good.
-
I didnt see a hold there.
-
Malkin should get 5 and a game.
-
MAtch penalty baby!
-
Malkin is a pussy
-
What a fucking cheap shot artist.
-
Anyone want to venture a guess as to whether DoPS looks at that hit?
-
This is embarrassing.
-
I see they didn't take any blue pills at intermission
-
No way do you win a game with a 6-3 pp advantage including a major if you don’t score here.
-
Anyone want to venture a guess as to whether DoPS looks at that hit?
They have to look at it. Not sure anything will happen. Not likely since its the Pens.
-
(https://galactichub.com/caps/pathetic.gif)
-
That was a joke.
-
:70z:
-
Should be like 6 or 7 for them. Holtby has been incredible.
-
one team looks like their skates aren't tied
-
Holy fuck Holtby. It would be a real shame if we can't pull this one out for Holtby. Without him we are down 5 or more goals.
-
Be lucky to get a point.
-
In - Tense game!

Hello all ... just tuned in time to see Malkin get the boot. He's such a POS. I remember that New Year's Outdoor Game we played up in Shitsburg where between periods Gabby pointed out that Malkin didn't like getting hit and if the Caps checked him hard, he would draw a penalty ... which he did like he was following a script.
Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I know I haven't been here a lot so far this season - things have been really rough going in my world and I'll just leave it at that. The Caps sure aren't making life any easier though. From what I've seen we can't play team D anymore; leaving a tired Holtby out to dry far too often. Djoos is still getting pushed around. Orlov's play isn't worth $2 million, much less $5 million a season. The 4th line had almost no grit and absolutely no meanness (well, the whole team doesn't have any of that) and Burakovsky (of the supposed "core" of our future team) is a waste of a jersey and (unless he changes or I'm not seeing something) should be traded ASAP. And lastly, our developmental system - since we have no one to call up in a age of superior young talent showing up in nearly every other team - blows donkeys.
Just my two cents.
PS - Don't move to Baltimore; I'd bet good money I just heard one - if not two - shootings in the last 15 mins.

DC must be having a rant.
-
Kuzy more interested in trying to draw penalties and whine than play hard tonight.
-
Not good tonight.
-
DC must be having a rant.
Can't you read? Then it's not.
-
Oshie has missed about a third of this game
-
We overpass all the time. Did last year teach us nothing?
-
PENALTY
-
How the fuck in that not delay of game. WTF "SMART PLAY"??
-
PENALTY
Not with all our PPs.
-
PENALTY
Should have been.

Can't you read? Then it's not.
I've seen him type on his phone, all thumbs

How the fuck in that not delay of game. WTF "SMART PLAY"??
Stuck in equipment. Refs say “no intent.”
-
I thought Ovie learned last year he really isn't that good at carrying the puck .....
But its good to see Oshie back on the ice. I hope he's not pushing things to get back on the ice b/c half of the team is playing like crap.
-
Doc is getting senile
-
Love it TJ.
-
:77z:
-
What a great FUCK YOU, MALKIN !!! by Oshie !!!
-
OCHIE!!!!!
-
:sp:
-
If it ends like this it’s a nice 2 points.
-
man that was ugly
-
5 IN A ROW !!!!!
:cw:
-
Wow we got outplayed badly. Thanks Holtby.
-
Congrats with a win! :P
-
OUTSTANDING !! Not only do we beat Shitsburg (no matter how much they try to cheat ... looking at you Letang) but we also get a Free Willy sign up for the whole Oshie interview. Fuck you, NHL Brass.
-
so what's the over under on Syndey running another coach out of town?
-
Strangely, I think that puts us in 2nd place.
-
Damn ... with (me and) Quenneville now unemployed. I don't like that thought....
-
What could be better than to see shitsburg 5 loss in a row
-
Ugggh .... Avs vs. Preds (ie lots of YOUNG stars on the ice) ... why did I think that McGuire wouldn't be at this game????
-
Stuck in equipment. Refs say “no intent.”
The rule book does not say intent is needed

There is no way that man is not a closet homo
-
The rule book does not say intent is needed
That was maybe the most obvious pro Hens zebra non-call ever!
-
Run like you stole it boys - ‘cause those 2 points were highway robbery.
-
Strangely, I think that puts us in 2nd place.
It does. The entire Metro division is struggling right now except for the Islanders.
-
LOL! Oshie faking out the reporters by pretending he wasn't aware that Carlson passed him the puck for the GWG. Right after he was asked about the hit to the head and passing the concussion protocol.
-
The rule book does not say intent is needed
And that puck wasnt stuck in his equipment. He held the puck against his chest.
-
Ha, Alan May said the $10K fine was garbage without naming names
-
It does. The entire Metro division is struggling right now except for the Islanders.
Dude, we're only one point down from them with the same # of games played.
ETA
I agree, we all suck!
-
LOL! Oshie faking out the reporters by pretending he wasn't aware that Carlson passed him the puck for the GWG. Right after he was asked about the hit to the head and passing the concussion protocol.
Pens fans are saying Oshie faked the stick in the face and the hit to the head.
-
There is no way that man is not a close[size=78%]t homo[/size]
Please don't call him a "homo" .. even RuPaul would be offended by comparing him with McGuire. Now if you compared him to Jerry Sandusky .....
-
Pens fans are saying Oshie faked the stick in the face and the hit to the head.
You are kidding, right? . . . . . Probably not!
-
Pens fans are saying Oshie faked the stick in the face and the hit to the head.
Hard to believe it, but you’re right. Their fanbase is saying there shouldn’t have even been a penalty on Malkin, buy Oshie should’ve gotten 2 for diving ...... I shit you not. Multiple posters are saying Oshie dove. Too funny.
-
the problem with hen fans is they are so used to watching their team with that fake head flip they don't know what real head hit looks like. It's why I have zero respect for Syndey
-
Hard to believe it, but you’re right. Their fanbase is saying there shouldn’t have even been a penalty on Malkin, buy Oshie should’ve gotten 2 for diving ...... I shit you not. Multiple posters are saying Oshie dove. Too funny.
No doubt the same fans that say Tom Wilson should have gotten 30 games. :O=
-
You are kidding, right? . . . . . Probably not!
I'm not kidding. They are saying Oshie intentionally skated into Malkin's shoulder to draw a penalty.
-
Sloppy but I'll take the Osh revenge for 2! (alta nailed it.. Their fans are too used to seeing dives to recognize the real thing) Holtby saved that one from being another touchdown game. Looks like a focus problem to me. You see it's there, but they can go to sleep for stretches at a time.. Either way, beating Shitsburgh is always fun!
-
I'm not kidding. They are saying Oshie intentionally skated into Malkin's shoulder to draw a penalty.
I went over to HFBoards and I tried to "like" your last post and it wouldn't let me. I've been a member there for years. I used to be able to post there. Any idea why that might be?
-
Other than our PP time, I actually thought we outplayed them. We were skating well, with good energy. Yes, we gave up a few chances, and stunk on the PP, but I thought we were the better team. Guess I am in the minority.

We were the better team, Beags! I’m in the minority with you!!
I was there, and the whole atmosphere was different.
By comparison, to the last few regular season matches with the Hens, this one was quite vanilla, throughout, until the last half of the third period.
If you remove the “It’s Pittsburgh” stigma from the game, then it was 50-52 minutes of relatively ho-hum, semi-sloppy hockey, considering all the theoretical talent out there on the ice!
It DID, suddenly get very competitive and exciting, in last half of the third period, almost like both sides finally “REALIZED” that hey, it’s 1-1, lets DO SOMETHING!
I had an avid Hens fan sitting next to me. He loves the Caps, is a season tix holder, and cheers the Caps fervently, except when Hens are in town! He wears Backy #19 sweater, all season long, except for Hens games! (I’ll never truly understand the SOB), but he does talk an honest game.
He also thought the Caps played the better game!
I’m giving a little more praise to Rierden. Even though it’s early, I needed to see some evidence that Rierden, could make effective, and meaningfully observable changes, demonstrating that he does have his finger on the “pulse” of the team.
He has shown signs of doing just that, observing the line changes, and other subtle moves, after the pathetic Dallas loss, last Saturday. Now, getting his first 2 consecutive wins, both generally solid, relatively, when compared to the rest of our short sample of games!
Holtz looked BETTER, but not outstanding, IMO, as our D also contributed with an overall better puck management, and forcing more flow to the outside, in our defending zone.
Still too many defensive mistakes, but of a lesser magnitude, hence, less stabbing ourself in the foot. Even our passing was a slight bit more crisp. Not by much, but enough to foster an overall edge!
This was NOT an 8-7, or 7-6, loose D game, where both sides were obsessed with cheating their forwards, attempting to create multiple breakaways, as has been the recent regular season history.
This game had more of a, coaching vs coaching, feel to it, with neither side taking big risks. Rierden won in the overall!
50 minutes or so of a back and forth, call your in-laws, not too exciting game! Ending with very good, competitive hockey to finish it out, with some poetic justice from Oshie, and a significant BIG WIN!
Rush
-
Rush interesting comments about the game. I was at the game too but I thought we were outplayed. When the other team has twice as many SOG as you your not going to win too many games. I thought Holtby kept us in the game. I will have to watch the replay and see if I see what you saw. I was happy we won but not with the way we played.
-
I went over to HFBoards and I tried to "like" your last post and it wouldn't let me. I've been a member there for years. I used to be able to post there. Any idea why that might be?
I have no clue.

Glad you said that Bf2 (and Puck) I was (cough) "impaired" (cough) but didn't think it was nearly as bad as the announcers were saying either.. Then I came on here and saw the comments and figured WTH "I guess Im drunk.." SOG were shit, and we gave up a bunch of chances, but as far as "playing" I thought we looked about the same as they did.. We just kept trying to make one more pass that would result in no SOG.

Ya - I thought we were skating well and giving a good effort - there were just lots of times when we didn't get the bounces or just missed on some passes. They didn't get the bounces either but did have too many direct chances on Holtby. Overall, I enjoyed watching it.

Rush interesting comments about the game. I was at the game too but I thought we were outplayed. When the other team has twice as many SOG as you your not going to win too many games. I thought Holtby kept us in the game. I will have to watch the replay and see if I see what you saw. I was happy we won but not with the way we played.
I do understand where your coming from 4Caps. SOG was definitely in Hens favor. Holtby did make some crucial saves. He always does, but so far this season, (yes, it’s early, still), his general game pattern has included both critical saves, AND some goals, HE ADMITS, were on him, and would like to have back.
I point this out because one of the differences in this Hens game, was a slight tilt upward in our puck handling, AND the overall TEAM defense, reducing the percentage of quality SOG, by keeping Hens more to outside, than I’ve been seeing lately.
My guess is that the different line combos, may have resulted in our forwards helping out a bit more on defense. A change we all noticed in last years playoffs, that really paid off for us!!
I, like you, am going to take a second look at the game, because the differences I mention, weren’t great sweeps of obvious change, by the eye test.
I do think we played better overall, because of the above mentioned. I mean, a 1-1 game, between Caps and Hens, after 58 minutes of play, and 10 tons of offensive talent on the ice that night, was probably not expected by too many of us, to be sure. It did star to get real competitive with somewhere around 8-9 minutes left in the game, and we WON!!👍👍
Pittsburgh did have one or two scary cycling moments, late in the game, but Holtz and D prevailed.
I think this game was more of a coaching battle, behind the scenes, and between periods, more than anything else, and with the Oilers and Hens victories in mind, my opinion of Reirden has gone up a notch or so! That’s what I took from this game most of all!
Glad you were there, too! No pressure, but if you ever wanna have a beer, I’m usually at PWC lounge, between periods. Probably will be sporting my new Kempny sweater! Just got it autographed at the 365 member party tonite!!! 😁😁👍

Did you watch a different game than we did? The Pens had over 30 high quality scoring chances in this game. More than double what we had. We did not play well defensively. Holtby played well and we got very lucky with the goal posts. I believe the Pens hit 5 in this game. The way we played in this game we would lose 99 out of 100 games. This was that one game. The coaching doesnt deserve credit for this game.
The one thing Reirden did do in this game was split up Niskanen and Orlov. It has been an adventure for that pairing this year. Both struggled again. Kempny hasn't played well either. Carlson is way ahead of the other dmen on this team. He had a couple bad games in a row recently but other than those 2 games he has been very good. In the defensive zone as well. Its bad when Carlson is your best defensive dman.
A plus is Bowey. He is looking like he belongs in the NHL. Even got some pk time. He might have caught up to Djoos.

That is too funny. It appears to be an autonomic response. The Hens may have been genetically modified with this built-in diving reflex.

Jeez Maaco!
Ok I’ll answer your first question....Uh, NO, I didn’t watch a DIFFERENT GAME, but I’ll give you a little hint about me....I did have a DIFFERENT OPINION of it!
While your getting that “sarcasm meter” tuned up, have them adjust that “tact valve”, as well!
Hell, you can even send me the bill! LOL

Well 4Caps, I went ahead and reviewed a sped up version of the game.
I must admit that I saw more Hens activity, at our end, than I had witnessed, when at the game. It didn’t seem as “vanilla” as I thought. I, now, have to give the playing edge to the Hens. Good call, buddy!
On a slightly humorous note, I’ll have to borrow a page from Mickstix’s defense, in that I didn’t eat anything until the start of the 3rd period. Problem was, I must confess to knocking down 2 Stella’s, and a few tequila and Tito’s shots, before the 1st P puck drop, obviously, affecting my judgement “slightly”, with my nearly empty stomach. LOL 😆.
Once I ate, the third Period was pretty damn exciting!!😂😂
Thanks for the insight!
