Braden Holtby is always calm, cool and collected ... unless you swipe a puck from a kid
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/WtTW2sVFzfUXBsqedPcca93yVgc=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/IGDZB6GWKYI6RA4EXTCUSL7PJE.jpg)
Puck-snatching adults are about the only thing that gets Braden Holtby fired up. (Nick Wass/Associated Press)
MONTREAL — Not much rattles zen Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, but watching a puck he tossed over the glass and intended for a kid swiped by an adult has infuriated him in recent pregame warmups. Twice in the past three weeks, Holtby has pointed to a young fan standing at the glass and then lofted a puck over only to have a taller adult nearby catch the disc and keep it for himself. The clips of Holtby’s exasperated body language after have gone viral.
“I guess everything is caught on film now,” he said. “It frustrates me. I might have been raised a different way, I guess. You just don’t do that.”
You sir, @Holts170, are a gem. pic.twitter.com/poNrn0O6ao (https://t.co/poNrn0O6ao)
— NHL (@NHL) October 11, 2018
Holtby isn’t the only Capitals player who has had to deal with a puck-snatching adult. Last season, forward Brett Connolly meant for a puck to land in the hands of a young girl (https://twitter.com/NHL/status/985671920111833089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E985671920111833089&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fsports%2F2018%2F10%2F11%2Fbraden-holtby-latest-caps-player-annoyed-by-puck-snatching-adult%2F), but a man standing behind her thwarted two of Connolly’s tries and gave it to boys beside her. Connolly’s third attempt was finally successful.
When Holtby watched another puck get stolen away from his intended target before Washington’s game in Vancouver last week, he glared at the thief.

— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) October 23, 2018
“I thought he was kind of kidding around, but I think the guy behind him was even more mad than I was,” Holtby said.
Outside of his adventures in warmups, Holtby’s had a rough statistical start to the season. He’s 4-2-1, but he has an .888 save percentage with a 3.41 goals-against average. As a goaltender who enjoys rhythm and playing as often as possible, he said the spread-out schedule in October was “strange," and it might have hurt him. The Capitals played 10 games in October, and they’ll have 15 games in November.
“We’ve given up some quality chances against and we just have to, within our system, get a little bit more detailed, a little bit more structured, a little harder in some tough areas,” Coach Todd Reirden said. “Braden’s been outstanding for us for years, and for him, we have to do a better job in front of him. I look forward to seeing him continue to progress here, especially with playing games every other night that he can get into a bit of a routine here.”
Orpik could practice Friday
Defenseman Brooks Orpik will miss Thursday night’s game in Montreal because of an undisclosed “lower-body” injury, but Reirden said it’s possible Orpik will be back on the ice Friday. The 38-year-old hasn’t practiced with his teammates since Washington returned from its Western Canada road trip on Sunday.
“He may practice tomorrow,” Reirden said. “He’s not skating today, but we’ll see how he does with treatment and stuff the rest of today and whether he’s able to join us for practice or not tomorrow.”

Just in case someone really wanted to listen to Walton on the radio tonight, they can’t. Walton called a different game this afternoon and apparently couldn’t make it to Montreal in time. Which means we get more of that asshat that can’t pronounce a players name after 5 years
-
You talking about Locker?
-
:20:
-
Nice save by Nisky!
-
WTH! Did everyone move to another board or something? It hasn't been real busy in here since we won the Cup. I guess everyone had their fill with one Cup.

I can't remember our defense ever playing as poorly as that last shift.

I can't remember our defense ever playing as poorly as that last shift.
Our defense has been bad all season other than the game against the bruins
-
Walton did the radio for the Winipeg Florida game this morning
-
Nice to see the Caps tie it but they've been on their heals a bit so far
-
It took the Caps awhile to get into the game, we were badly outplayed in the beginning but picked it up at the end. Montreal is much better than people expected going into the season. They are aggressive and play a fast game. I don’t think the Caps were ready for that in the beginning.
-
Walton did the radio for the Winipeg Florida game this morning
He did the TV play by play for NBCSN which carried the game. He and our favorite Pierre McGuire did the game. He did a good job I thought.
-
DAGNAMMOTTTTT!
Your clocks haven't gone back yet, have they. ::)
-
You talking about Locker?
LoL, no. Waltons side kick, Ken Sabourin. He's the one that says "Bearakowski"
-

I didn't even know there was game over there today, I just assumed Walton did the radio for it since that's his thing
-
Forgot to note that Montreal goal was scored by a player who scored his first NHL goal. That seems to happen so often with the Caps. I know that this is at least the second game that this has happened this year.
-
Great start to the period >:(
-
Our guys look like they've never played together before. :poop:
-
not good,
-
Kempny isn't playing well tonight.
-
No Lil, clocks not yet turned back.
When I was speaking of the Caps conditioning I was speaking of physical. Obviously our mental conditioning is lacking!

Were gonna need a whole lot more of that, because of how awful our D is playing.

Tie game boys and girls !!!!!!!!!

Thanks Eller!
Eller has the occasional stinker, but he's usually quitte reliable. I like that line.

Hehe. You noticed that too eh! I'm sure Kotkaniemi is very happy the Caps' Holtby gave him his first.
Damn! I've been trying to get this reply off, but we keep on scoring so fast I have to bail and post the goals. not a bad problem to have though!
-
This is a wild game. Quite entertaining.

Ove LOVES playing the Habs. :hearts:
-
we haven’t had a hat trick in a while

Good work from that line again.

:pk:
-
I'm loving it. Every time I open my mouth the Caps step up and prove me wrong. Playing well now.
-
Refs starting to get in to it right at the end there. >:(
-
Big PK coming up. Have to stop taking penalties, that was an unnecessary penalty by Eller.

Eller quite often takes bad penalties.

Really good PK to start the 3rd.

Ovi should have had the hattrick. Missed a wide open net.

Habs comms are not the worst I've heard... Sometimes they even try to be funny.

Holey Moley Holtby!!! ???

I'm okay, ta. ;)

That wasnt that good of a save Holtby was beat. Domi had Three quarters if the net to shoot at and he ended up shooting at the only place he wouldnt score.
-
Holtby is playing well though. Our defense has been atrocious.
-
Ooooooh! Our first PP.
Nobody say it!!!!!!!!!!1 :cross:
-
What a waste. :(
-
Nice fukin pass from Carlson to set that goal up
-
NOOOOOOOOO!
Bugger.
-
Nice fukin pass from Carlson to set that goal up
That's how we protect a lead.
-
that's nice
-
Ah fuck
-
-
What a way to lose a game.
We had it. We gave it away.
Our D was appalling.
-
Looked like Dylan got assists on both those
-
Lots of opportunities in the simple battles that the Caps simply did not execute on. A little more effort here and a little more effort there and this could have been a different outcome. I also can't remember Ovie fanning on more incredible opportunities. It was an exciting game to watch though. Habs played their hearts out. Caps, not so much.
-
I hope Orpik's back tomorrow.

Yep. Have to give the Habs some credit. They took their chances.

Night ight sweeties. :hearts:

Talk about a total collapse. Hard to believe. Should Holtby had Domi’s goal, not blaming Holtby though, he made some amazing saves.
-

He definitely sucked tonight. By far his worst game if the season. The game winning goal was on Holtby. It went through his glove. It may have been deflected. Not sure.
Whatever it doesnt matter. The team played like crap. This is the worst Ive seen this team play defensively since the late 70s. Yes we are that fricken bad.

Good night Lil!

A positive note. The Islanders beat the Pens in a shootout. Islanders with back to back wins against the Pens. Good for them.
-
Told ya they'd be hung over.. :raspberry: :poop:

Carlson was in good position to defend and take on Domi. He simply didn’t. Probably the worst 4 final minutes I’ve ever seen from #74.
First the bad pass to set up the tie game goal. Then the weak poke check, signature D move, by Carly, which Domi just brushed aside, then shot with ease!
Not the most difficult shot for Holtz to stop, so he gets some blame as well!
Give Montréal some credit for capitalizing on our mistakes.
Finally, Bura, another NOTHING BURGER of a game. He does NOT deserve 2nd line attention. 3rd line looked good with that combo of 20, 10, 18!

Carlson was adequate in first two periods. But agree he took a 4 minute turd at the end. Hopefully he shakes it off for Dallas.
Holtz played a factor in a few of Habs goals. Defense was generally bad most of the game. Holtz and Carly share blame IMHO, on the game winner.
Carlson in crease for Habs fourth goal, gave half of a defensive effort, looked weak when goal was scored. Holtz not to blame on that one. Orlov lost control of puck behind net, as well!!

I dont know. I thought Carlson and Kempny both sucked. Orlov wasnt spectacular either.
Our defense is bad. We never would have blown a lead like this under Trotz.
-
Holy sheit!!!
How did we blow that? Habs gots some good bounces but all the talking heads are saying what a great exciting game. Well, yes it’s exciting when neither team plays defense and the goaltenders stand on their heads.
Even Alan May is drinking the koolaid. Saying this is one of the best games he’s seen?
Exciting yes, but not good. We not gonna win much if we keep allowing 4+ goals a game
Oh, and I’m confused...I thought the Back To Back chant was a reference to winning. Someone needs to tell the Caps that.
Lots of blame to go around.
Carlson....Holtby....Ovi.
No particular order
WTF Caps
-
And my son comes in with three minutes left and Caps up and asks me “what game is this?”
(Cause I’m watching it about 90 minutes behind) and he already heard the final score of 6-4
He comes back in 5 minutes later and says.... I was confused cause I heard the final score on my way home and then I saw the score with three minutes left and couldn’t figure out what happened.
Yeah. Me neither kid. I

I couldn't figure out that greatest game ever crap from May, was he watching the same game as everyone else?
:O=
:O= :O=
-
. . . glad I missed this one. . .
They might as well put an EA logo on the ice
-
Yeah the only big plus for me was Eller, Stephenson and our fourth line dominated them most of the game. Our top six gave up way too many changes, and most of our notable stars were not great defensively. It was a very weird game to watch because we had control of so much of that game for so long, and like many of our early games this season, we play smart/go for the kill and then just some boneheaded/weak plays late by key players leads to a loss.
The Domi goal is Holtby. Giving up that kind of shot late, boxing to the outside is fine. Holtby could see it, it bounced out of his glove and in. Hell even the tying goal is a battle in front that we should of had, but a greasy squeaker. Holtby otherwise though had a good night, so it's hard to criticize two weak goals when he was so stellar in other areas.
Reminds me of the Caps in the middle of last season tbh, not exactly slumping but not exactly breaking the bank either. The identity is there, they are playing to it for stretches of games, but when they lose it they do the literal slip on the banana peel and fall flat on their faces. Tough game to lose to be honest, and the boys still have some tinkering to do. But I do see glimpses of hope, we can say all we want about the teetering into the back n forth offensive chances or the EA equivalent, but for stretches of games we aren't that and we show flashes of the Cup team. But obviously, stretches aren't good enough and I think finding a consistent 60 minute game is probably going to be the Caps struggles for this season.
-
I'm trying not to care about these early season games. I predicted they would be about 500 after 20 games and that looks to be accurate. What struck me about this game was the lack of physicality which unfortunately has become the norm in the league over the last 3 years. I can't think of one hard check by either team in this game.
-
I miss the boring Barry Trotz system. This video hockey we are playing is a joke.

Yep, as easy as it is to point at Reirdon, it is no secret that this style is what Ted a& Monumental Entertainment want, so he could very well just be trying to please them.
But either way, this team looks completely terrible
-
According to Rierden they are basically playing the same system as they did last season under Trotz but they are not executing. Remember last season the Caps were not great defensively in the beginning of the year either. It is not realistic to expect them to be playing at this point in time the same way they played in the playoffs last season. It is much too early to be concerned .

it is extremely realistic, and should be expected and demanded. There is no acceptable excuse for them not to, particularly after having such success.
Really, how do you not expect Defending Champs to execute all year?
What is unrealistic, is taking for granted that just because a team that sucked defensively, was able to play acceptable D and ride a hot goalie to a Cup means that they are good enough, and the opposition will cower in fear of their “talent” this year they will win a Cup again, so who cares, the first quarter of the season is irrelevant.

Actually our system changed last season. We played a more run and gun style with our forwards being a bit lazy on the back check because they were cheating to try and create offensive chances. We went back to the Trotz style late in the season and in the playoffs.
That is why Holtbys numbers suffered in the regular and were better in the playoffs.
The defence has been horrid this season. A lot of it is on our forwards not back checking. Last game there were several occasions that our forwards gave up on the play.
I think it is a bigger concern this year. Last season I expected some growing pains because of the rookies in the lineup. There are no excuses thus season.
We are quick to jump on our defencemen. True they aren't playing well but they aren't getting much support from our forwards. Another thing that I have noticed is that our dmen are turning the puck over on stretch passes.

I'm starting to scare myself because I'm finding that I am agreeing with DC on almost everything.

Our main problems!
I remember thinking that we appeared castrated on the physicality front and that we'd have benefited a lot if we used our size a few times. It probably would have slowed up the speedy Habs. I was impressed with our conditioning and ability to largely keep up with these guys though.

Conditioning has not been an issue with this team in quite a few years, with the minor exception of this season with the hangover. But that should be long gone by now

I would go so far as agreeing to last season, but we struggled quite a bit with fast teams the season prior, especially in the 3rd frames. IMO this is our best start in this area ever.
If you like we can have a duel to settle this. :clown: Or we can agree to disagree! ;)
