John Carlson is coming off a career year. What’s next? More awards consideration.
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/hP-x0hstfYxaP_j7dGGVQ8-17sk=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/UIUSY3GQBYI6RJG3DBBRDUTRFE.jpg)
Defenseman John Carlson has three goals and six assists in the Capitals' first six games. (Nick Wass/Associated Press)
Of all the highs for John Carlson last season — his first Stanley Cup, a career year with 15 goals and 53 assists, and a big new contract worth $64 million over eight years — he and Washington Capitals Coach Todd Reirden fell short on one goal they set for him four years ago.
“Definitely getting that top-three [finish] for the Norris [Trophy] is something that he and I have had some different plans over the years in terms of the expectations for him,” Reirden said. Carlson finished fifth in voting for the award, which recognizes the NHL’s best defenseman. Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman won it, finishing ahead of Drew Doughty of Los Angeles, P.K. Subban of Nashville and Seth Jones of Columbus.
“Whether it happens or not is not really on me,” Carlson said. “I know I can play better and be better, but I’m not going to be running any campaigns.”
Then allow his teammates to lobby on his behalf.
“Last year, he got robbed for the Norris, I think,” center Nicklas Backstrom said. “If you look around the league and look at all the defensemen, I mean, John Carlson is the guy that I would pick first. The work he does on a nightly basis, no one else does.”
[Capitals are second-worst faceoffs team in NHL. Does it matter? (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/10/17/capitals-are-second-worst-faceoffs-team-nhl-does-it-matter/?utm_term=.071b74943f72)]
After Carlson led all defensemen in scoring last season with 68 points and then was rewarded with a rich contract — his $8 million salary cap hit is tied for second among NHL blue-liners — the expectations for him are even higher. He has handled them well so far, posting three goals and six assists in Washington’s first six games. Five of those assists have come on the Capitals’ hot power play, which is scoring at a 39.1 percent clip, the second-best mark in the NHL. Playing on both special teams units, he’s averaging 26 minutes, which has him on pace for a career high in time on ice. (He averaged 24:47 last season.) At five-on-five, Washington has scored eight goals when Carlson has been on the ice while surrendering three.
The Capitals' blue line was suspect for much of last season, and the team challenged Carlson with the heaviest workload of his career while often rotating defense partners. He’s expected to enjoy more stability this season with Michal Kempny back on his left side. Kempny’s smooth skating, in particular his speed getting back for loose pucks or chances against, should allow Carlson to be more aggressive offensively.
In Wednesday night’s overtime win against the New York Rangers, he finished with three points, scoring Washington’s lone even-strength goal with a slap shot off a faceoff. On the team’s first two power plays, he teed up Alex Ovechkin one-timers from the left faceoff circle. The highlights focused on Ovechkin’s goals and defenseman Matt Niskanen’s game-winner, but within the dressing room, Carlson’s impressive performance didn’t go unnoticed.
[Matt Niskanen scores on rebound, lifts Caps past Rangers in OT (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/matt-niskanen-scores-on-rebound-lifts-caps-past-rangers-in-ot/2018/10/17/fe1f6ca0-d240-11e8-b2d2-f397227b43f0_story.html?utm_term=.02631f5944dc)]
“He flies under the radar a little bit just with our overall team success sometimes,” Reirden said. “In the past when we’ve worked together [as Carlson’s position coach], we’ve used that as incentive and a chance to motivate and continue to push forward to get to where his ultimate goal is: to be at the top."
“He dominates the game,” Niskanen said. “Moves the puck well, skates well for a big man, can defend. He’s got that offensive feel for the game and offensive touch — big shot. He’s a good player. We need him.”
Carlson has never been named to the All-Star Game, and Reirden said he was disappointed when Carlson was passed over last season. Although Carlson is animated in practice, his attitude off the ice is generally laid back. He downplayed pressure to live up to his new contract.
“If I score 150 goals this season, you can’t redo it," he said. “Realistically, you’ve already earned what you’ve gotten. Then it comes down to just pride in yourself to want to be the best version of me.”
When asked whether he expected a higher Norris finish this season, he shrugged that off, too.
“I don’t know. At the end of the day, I got what I wanted,” he said, referring to the Stanley Cup. “That’s all that matters. . . . Things have been going pretty well so far, but it’s not about that for me. I just want to play good hockey and put people in positions to succeed. I feel confident in my game, I know what I’m capable of, and I want to be the best that I can be.”

meh, the west coast of Florida is ten times better, despite what I said elsewhere when I was at Anna Maria two years ago I didn't want to leave
-
Alright, it's hockey night
boys ArJ and Alta and 'Lil -
Let's have the team that played Boston showup, not the one that played Jersey.
Stephenson, who I'm a big fan of, gets another crack on the top line - hoping he can make the most of it.

Thank you. And BTW, I am the last part of that acronym. " AND I LMAO"
-
WTF, Isabelle over at WaPo posted that Walker was in tonight in place of Jaskin. WRONG!
-
Jeez, was that Burt who's skate stopped that one from going in?? He's on fire!

I like Stephenson too.

damn i wish we had TB back. . .
-
Morning peeps!
Liking Kempney a lottle more each time.
Lots of love for Dylantonight. (Got Joe B and Locker)

Saw that coming.. Too much action in our own end.
-
pukin rebound

for the wrong team!

:raspberry:
8)
;D
-
I bet Mick is feeling left out
-
Not making any excuses for the Caps, but this Florida team is better than their 0-4 record. 2 of their losses were in OT and the other two were 1 goal losses in regulation.
-
:20:
for the wrong team!
He is our worst player right now. Every since he got his ass kicked by that midget he has been a joke.
-
:74:
-
Nice play by Kempny to keep posession and nice assist by Eller - he helps score one for the right team!!!
-
So that’s 2 points for Eller tonight!!!
-
Dylan from Kempney! Liking this pair together.
-
good thing the FLA PP sucks ass
-
I think we've been the better team so far. The Pussycats goal was lucky for them. They've seemed a bit random so far.
-
Gonna be lucky if we get a point tonight. They're hungry for a W and we can't stay outta the box. :poop: combo in the works..
-
Unlike that.... :-(
-
Yep, I'll be catching the rest of this one on 4x fast forward.. :O=
-
And that.
:-X
-
Bad turnover by Kempny. He has to go behind the net on that play.
-
there’s a prime example of why the face off stat sucks, Caps won that at the dot where it’s counted but didn’t skate away from the circle with it
-
Seriously, get that dumb ass 65 off the ice.
-
This is beginning to look like the Ranger game, totally pissing me off. I wonder if anyone will say we played well this game.
:O=
ETA
TOO MANY PASSENGERS.
-
Someone needs to tell Bura that he bears at least SOME defensive responsibility.
-
Caps need a head removal procedure at intermission
-
Yikes!!!!! 4-1 Cats
-
Pull Holtby.. 4 goals in a period is plenty.
-
-
I'll preface this with "I love them because they won us a Cup." But, I have to say this is atrocious hockey that shows no regard for any defensive responsibility whatsoever. Poor Holts is being left out to dry to the tune of 4 goals in the first that could easily have been 6 or 7. What is Reirden bringing to the table? Really.
-
Wow.. Brouwer doesn't have that kind of hand/eye coordination.. Just they're night it appears.
-
Pull Holtby.. 4 goals in a period is plenty.
None of those goals are his fault. I havent seen a Caps team this bad defensively in a long time.
-
Pull Holtby.. 4 goals in a period is plenty.
Which one was his fault, Mick? No defense whatsoever. He made saves to keep it from 6 or 7.

I thought we had the better of it - just - in the first 5 minutes, but since then :poop:
Shocking..
-
Not saying pull him cause they were his fault, pull him to put him out of his misery!! Change the tune!! You know the drill.. You guys want to leave him in for a touchdown? extra point too?
-

Ya I think our problems in our own end is a coaching issue. Am I the only one that misses Trotz.
-
It's more than just a coaching issue. This team won a CUP for God's sake, they know about defense. What I am seeing is the old "It's not my problem" heartless wonders we knew all too well a couple-three years ago. A few exceptions of course.
-

Ya I agree. They are hanging him out to dry.

In the playoffs Trotz had them playing a tight defensive system. To be honest it looks like we aren't even using a system. We are playing street hockey. This is more about coaching than ability.
-
i bet Dino could be the hell outta Bura,Eller, Connolly, Dowd, Jennings,Varna,Kuzy, Hooks, Carlson, Djoos, Kempny. , tonight
-

That I don't disagree with -- thought you were hanging the blame on him.
This is really bad. No discipline whatsoever. Florida is not a good team.
-
Yea, at the moment they're too worried about between the leg/blind or 100' passes, to play any defense.. :-\
-
Even though the blew out Boston I expected a little bit of a hangover and a "it doesn't matter until April" mentality, but things like defensive coverage among the same 6 guys who played together all spring is really hard to fathom. Lack of attention to detail is really not a good sign -- is smells like lack of interest.
-
Yeah. Those Cup rings seem to be weighing them down a bit. Maybe they should take them off and get back to work.
-
They read your post Micky.
-
:10:
-
Wow! Lots of jiggly wiggly going on.

i smell more overconfidence . . .
-
I don’t agree with that move, the 1st period was not Holtbys fault
-
I'm about 10 seconds behind you guys. Go Connelly!
-
I don’t agree with that move, the 1st period was not Holtbys fault
I agree that it wasnt Holtbys fault.
-
I would think they told Holts that it was not about his play. Copley needs some ice time anyway.
-
I don’t agree with that move, the 1st period was not Holtbys fault
it was to protect Holts, not punish him. . .
(or even give Colpey some minutes since this game is all but over anyway)
-
Lokks like at least a couple of our fellas got the message.
-
COME ON OVI. Get it done boy!
-
Is it me, or does my boy look a little slow and sluggish tonight?
-
Should have been a delay of game penalty on Yandle for kneeing the goal of the moorings. Appeared intentional to stop the Caps pressure to me.
-
. . . heh Im gonna start getting Night Ranger in head every time I see Djoos . . . ( “motoring! what’s you’re price for flight”)
-
:13z:
-
Damn that was SWEET!!!!
-
Good lad Vrana! Nicely done.
-
Now I'm  instead of :crying: or  or :headbang: .
;D
-
This has got to be demoralizing for FLA
-
Good lad Vrana! Nicely done.
Vrana looks better on this line.
-
We got lucky that they called an embellishment.
-
that was a frikin weak ass call, not the double minors, that fact that a whistle was even blown
-
We need a LOT more of those embellishment calls IMO. not sure that was a fair one, but good to see them calling it. I really dislike divers and fakers. It's not manly or respectable.
It always makes me think of Sidney Crosby.
-
Don't quite see the embellishment? Looks like he lost an edge slightly, then his balance.
-
DSP is back in shape!!
-
SPelly!
-
don't believe I've ever seen a game when both goalies were pulled
-
Don't quite see the embellishment? Looks like he lost an edge slightly, then his balance.
Maybe the embellishment call was to make up for the fact it wasn't a penalty in the first place. He had just touched the puck a second before he was hit.
-
:25:
-
Maybe the embellishment call was to make up for the fact it wasn't a penalty in the first place. He had just touched the puck a second before he was hit.
That was a definite interference penalty.
-
Reimer let us back in this game. Same issues he had with the Leafs. No rebound control.
-
Maybe the embellishment call was to make up for the fact it wasn't a penalty in the first place. He had just touched the puck a second before he was hit.
That makes sense.
-
Nice slo=mo of the brilliant save by Copley. 8)
-
Oshie is sooooo streaky!
-
That was a definite interference penalty.
I went back to watch a few times on my DVR and he touched the puck as it went by just a moment before he got hit, which means it can't be interference.
-
Another dodgy call.
-
I went back to watch a few times on my DVR and he touched the puck as it went by just a moment before he got hit, which means it can't be interference.
The puck got chipped by Djoos and then Djoos intentionally blocked the players path. That is textbook interference.
-
did they point out at the beginning of the game that one of the jackass zebras is a rookie?
-
that interference call was fukin gay
what kind douche bag calls that?
-
A borderline call, at best, to give a team a 5-3? NHL BS.
-
score one by the jackass zebras
-
did they point out at the begging of the game that one of the jackass zebras is a rookie?
Meh, he'll learn.
At least he's not biased against us like some of them. He's making mistakes on both sides.
-
sweet move by Eller
-
Weak play Copley.
-
that interference call was fukin gay
what kind douche bag calls that?
It was bs. Ovi was trying to play the puck. That could have been interference on Ekblad just as easy.
-
bullshit
-
Suzy you’re Face Off % ain’t high enough to talk shit to a ref
-
And now the poor linesman's feelings get hurt so they get another f'n powerplay.
-
Kuzy got called for politely telling the refs that their shit was bullshit? Trash.
-
Ref needs to have a cup of tea and a biscuit. :clown:
-
bullshit
Selfish penalty but that is rarely called. Players chirp at linesmen all the time.
-
Selfish penalty but that is rarely called. Players chirp at linesmen all the time.
There was nothing selfish about that. Kuzy wasn't even yelling at him, he gave him a quick piece of mind while completely and utterly complying with what the linesman wanted him to do. He was waved out of the FO circle, didn't like it or the continuation of some bad calls and politely skated to his spot while saying something to the linesman or calling it bullshit.
That shouldn't be a call. Nothing selfish about it. Refs want us to lose this game, no other explanation the calls from them have been rather trash tier tonight.
-
Iit's good to see new refs coming up, but they have to do better than this. Maybe that fella's a little too fragile to be an NHL ref if he gets that upset that easily. I'll take a wild guess that he's never actually played hockey?
-
Okay. That was a much better period from our guys. We worked and got our act together. It's not our fault that the refs seem to have been trained by the likes of O'Bullshitters.
-

The only time I've seen a player get tossed that quickly is Harper, there are two umps that hate him for no reason
-
maybe Reirden has the gonads to call out the officiating in the post game, it would be nice to see for once
-
Joe B and Locker are hilarious. "Ankle cam"....
-
Jashin showing some fight
-
Jashin showing some fight
Lol I was just going to say that. If he keeps playing that like I will warm up to him.
-
Jashin showing some fight
Yeah, I loved it too!
-
I guess it's legal to hit a Cap in the back of the head with a cross check
-
NHL trained refs. Dumb as ****
-
Douche bag should have gotten his face out of the way of Oshie's stick. ::)
-
I guess it's legal to hit a Cap in the back of the head with a cross check
Ya Oshie deserved the high sticking penalty but right after that Kempny did get crosscheck. Very inconsistent officiating tonight.
-
Copley living dangerously!
-
These refs are out to lunch.
-
I want to believe people when they say there is no officiating bias against this team, then we get yet one more game like tonight
-
This power play is atrocious tonight.
-
:pp:
:19z:
-
Thank goodness for that. I was starting to think it wasn't going to happen... Oh me of little faith!
-
fukin nisky,
-
holy shit, Caps steal a point from the jackass zebras
-
fukin nisky,
Lol yup
-
fukin nisky,
He’s played a solid game. That was due to a bad Orlov turnover.
-
fukin nisky,
It was all the hapless, sloppy play ahead of Niskanen that put him in that situation.
-
holy shit, Caps steal a point from the jackass zebras
Playing 20 minutes and getting a point is lucky.
-
I want to believe people when they say there is no officiating bias against this team, then we get yet one more game like tonight
Yeah. They seemed okay in the first, but the second period, towards the end was just appalling. Not much better in the third either.
-
this will be a test for Copley
-
That was a fantastic 4 x 4!
Now 3 x 3?
Edit.
I misunderstood. I thought they changed it to literally 3 x 3.
-
Sochie Oshie!!
-
Kuuuzya
-
Oh FFS Ovi!!!! (Ō_ƆŎ)

-
Best shot in the league but he has to deke.
If he just snipes it from 15 feet out, it's in the back of the net, but he keeps trying to deke and he keeps failing. If it 'ain't broke, don't fix it - aka Oshie - if it isn't working - aka Ovi - change your tactic dude! >:(
-
Ha ha ha! Alan May calling out the refs!
:hearts:

OV has never been that great on the shootout, probably the only weak spot in his play throughout his career

That’s why his career SO is at 31%. If he just shot it would be more like 45-50%.

It was nice to hear May say what we all saw with the officiating, but he won't get in trouble for it
-
Ha ha ha! Alan May calling out the refs!
:hearts:
The refs deserved to be called out. It seemed like these guys were on a power trip. Ive always felt when a ref does a good job that you dont really notice him. When officials get noticed too much it means they had an off night.

I really think we should have won this game and quite easily.
We lost for two reasons. That first period was atrocious. No question. That was on us.
The second was the truly appalling reffing in the second and third periods. Like seriously? You know when, sometimes you just shake your head slowly in disbelief?
Well look, the way I see it is that after a truly appalling first period, we regrouped and got some fight back in the second. We got a point out of a game that, in my opinion, we should have walked away with it easily, but we got a point.
Meh!
We should have had that.
Oh, for the record, I thought Copley was outstanding. Again.
This game has really annoyed me. We SHOULD ahve won it and easily. Our laziness and arrogance in that first period cost us, even more that the ridiculous reffing that followed.
BAH! HUMBUG! >:(

OV has never been that great on the shootout, probably the only weak spot in his play throughout his career
And yet they keep..... keep puttong him out there. :(
-
The Hershey Bears lost tonight too, in a SO
-
Hard to feel robbed after that 1st period, but once we made the comeback the zebras took over.. Thought we stole both points, then they announced Ovie.. lol Dude really shouldn't be 3rd out, but whatever, Nick missed too..

two points is two points, but if I was an FLA fan I’d be livid.
You don’t come back from a 3 goal lead, the other team blows it.
The Caps better change this entertainment based, pond hockey videogame bullshit real quick or this is gonna get ugly when they run outta gas and/or teams don’t fuck up and blow 3 goal leads

There is a reason that Florida hadnt won a game before this. They have some talented players but they have to clean up the sloppy play.
And the Caps are playing the same way. Our personnel hasn't changed much but we do look different. This is more than just individual mistakes. When we are hemmed in our zone everyone is scrambling around. There is no structure. It doesnt even look like we are following any system. There have been some bad individual mistakes. We had some turnovers in our end. It seemed when we turnover the puck it ended up in our net all the time. Our forwards are all leaving the zone too early because we are thinking offense first. On the penalty that Niskanen took late in the 3rd period. The forwards all left the zone and even Orlov was leaving the zone when Niskanen passed it to him. It wasnt a tape to tape pass and it bounced away from Orlov resulting in a turnover. Niskanen who was alone in the defensive zone got caught flat footed and was forced to take a penalty. Plays like this are happening too often because we are thinking offense first. If it only happened when certain players were on the ice I would guess that it was on those players but it happens with all 4 lines. This is a coaching issue.
After the first intermission Alan May commented about the Caps forwards all leaving the zone early and we were relying on the stress pass and the Panthers were sitting in the neutral zone waiting to intercept those passes.
DC is correct. We are playing video game hockey. It looks like Reirden stole his system from EAsports.

Panther announcers noted on the Carlson goal, he was out of position and about to be behind the play, but we got a fortunate turnover that allowed him to get deep in the O zone and score. Team is playing a high risk game. Need to tighten up!

thought I’d pull this back out since it was earned ....

I think you nailed it with this post, Maaco!
The scrambling around, when defending our zone, is embarrassing to watch. This has been habitual and common to see, for the last several seasons. We have grown to rely on our ability to PREVENT both red or blue line crossing, OR to disrupt early entrance into our zone, by our opponent, by keeping pucks to the outside. Unfortunately, it’s essentially all we’ve got defensively, and we live and die by it!
The problem is that once an opponent gets the, (relatively speaking here), “rare” opportunity to set up in our zone, hemming us in, and cycling around, WE ARE SCREWED!!! Confusion starts, and we appear BAFFLED, and clueless as to how to defend at this point. It is my belief that this is when we are most vulnerable, and all the other teams know it.
I would love to see a statistic showing our opponents shooting percentage, once they’ve had control of the puck in our zone, for longer than, say, 12 seconds or so!! I’ll bet we have one of the highest G/SOG AGAINST percentages, in the league, using that qualifier!!
On the contrary, the only time you didn’t see us have this problem, was during our last two
rounds of the playoffs with Tampa, and Vegas.
Our 1-3-1 defensive setup at the red line, worked extremely well, because, for reasons still not really known, we “came together” collectively, as a team, hustling and staying in our role. When a team does that in a 1-3-1, it’s D is damn near impenetrable!!! Let’s remember also, that we were playing teams with excellent puck control.
The other difference during the playoffs, IMO, was when a team did get through, our forwards would close the gap, defensively speaking, by hustling and playing more individually responsible, making it seem like we were immediately in their face, when they received a pass, causing disruption to the opponents setup ability!!
We saw some slight carryover of this in our wins against Boston and Las Vegas. Both of these wins were dominating wins! NOW, unfortunately, I think we are beginning to see a return back to an all too common style of early, regular season, Caps hockey. The signature stuff like, getting lazy/cockey, after a big win, which leads to the D breakdowns mentioned above.
Add in some cockey forwards, leaving the zone early, and you’ve got a real mess on your hands, as the caps might have now!
Coaching is always at the root of this stuff, so I’m willing to give Rierden some time. I feel like the Caps can turn it on whenever they feel like it. They still have that much talent on the roster!! The question, like it has always been for the past few years, is which Caps team will show up on any given night? If Rierden can tap into that issue , and improve it, then I don’t think we have much to worry about.
Last words......Bura is now officially in the “Where’s Waldo” category! “F” him!!!

I need some tech help. I am admittedly not very saavy when it comes to computers or message boards, but I am have a weird specific problem.
I am not seeing ALL of Maaco's posts. It's like some of them are invisible. I see some of his posts but not all of them. For example:
I see his posts about some of the penalty calls, and about the sloppy play and goal tending, etc, but none of this type show up:
Carlson scores in the first period to tie the game 1-1 and Maaco's hero worship post isn't there.
Caps allow 4 goals in the 1st period and Maaco's berating the Caps other D men doesn't show up (even though Carly was on the ice for two of the goals)
The TV talking heads are already promoting Carlson for the Norris trophy and Maaco's support comments just aren't there.
Really strange. Can one of you tech guys tell me what's wrong with this?
(Maybe I should have posted this in the boredom thread)

My guess is that he is unable to post during the specific events that you’ve mentioned! I mean, it’s damn near impossible to type with Vaseline all over your hands!!!!😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
(Now Maaco, even YOU have to admit, that’s fuckin funny)!!
