Vegas Golden Knights indifferent about Stanley Cup finals rematchs
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/1CU1jv2lejlrdFD8ROK-k9o3mJk=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/OR77TVWE6AI6RMPNDUWWLODNBQ.jpg)
After the Capitals beat the Golden Knights in a five-game Stanley Cup finals series last June, the two teams will meet again on Wednesday night. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)
As the Vegas Golden Knights crammed into the quaint visiting locker room at Capital One Arena, they insist the feeling wasn’t different than any other game. Yes, they were here for two games in the playoffs. Yes, they lost both of those. No, that’s not weighing on them as they prepare to play the team that topped them for the Stanley Cup four months ago.
“Seriously, it hadn’t even crossed my mind,” Golden Knights Coach Gerard Gallant said. "Last year, they won the Stanley Cup. They were the better team in the final. They deserved it. They played well. This year, for me it’s about trying to get back to the Stanley Cup playoffs. That’s what we started out with. ... So, I’m not worried about, because Washington beat us in the final last year that we’re playing them Game 4 in the regular season. It means no more to me.
"Is it a rivalry? Do we really want to beat them? We want to win because we want two points. It has nothing to do with what happened last year in the playoffs.”
[Dmitrij Jaskin is the Capitals’ latest reclamation project]
Across the Potomac, at the Washington Capitals' practice facility in Arlington, players expected something different. The Pittsburgh Penguins ended their season in the second round in back-to-back years, so of course that fueled the Capitals whenever the teams played. After Vegas rolled through the Western Conference, Washington beat the Golden Knights in five games, arguably the Capitals' easiest series of the postseason.
“It was a great series for us but not for them," captain Alex Ovechkin said. “I think they a little bit angry.”
Said T.J. Oshie: “Just looking at experience, I think anytime, whether it’s in the first round or the finals, any time a team knocks you out, you usually have a little bit more fire. You kind of circle the calendar for that next game you play against them.”
But outside of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who said he’d rather start against the Capitals on Wednesday than play against his former team in Pittsburgh on Thursday night — “This is the team that beat us in the finals, and yeah, I just want to get back on the ice against them,” he said. Other Golden Knights players seemed indifferent about the early season rematch.
“I think everyone has turned the page and is moving on to this year,” Reilly Smith said. “There’s really no point to holding on to past emotions from last year.”
No date for Wilson appeal
A date hasn’t been set yet for Tom Wilson’s appeal hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, but according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, it’s expected to be next week. Even if Bettman reduces Wilson’s 20-game suspension from the Department of Player Safety, Wilson and the NHL Players' Association could choose to then appeal to a neutral arbitrator. Wilson remains suspended during the appeal process.
He wasn’t on the ice with teammates at morning skate on Wednesday, and Capitals Coach Todd Reirden said “he’s going through some things, just dealing with the appeal process today," indicating that it’s related to him getting prepared for the hearing.
“When he gets back, we’ll have some different things for him this weekend that he hasn’t done before,” Reirden said, referring to Wilson’s practice regimen while he’s suspended. “Just to make sure that he’s on top of his game and continuing to get better and stay as sharp as he can.”
[With Tom Wilson out, Capitals’ Brett Connolly adjusting to life on top line]
Dilly, dilly, D.C.
T.J. Oshie’s signature Stanley Cup celebration, in which he pulled his jersey over his head and chugged beer through the cloth, is being immortalized in a new Bud Light T-shirt. Participating bars in D.C. will be giving away the shirts before Wednesday night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
.@Capitals fans, there’s nothing quite like pulling a championship jersey over your head and drinking a Bud Light through it. A close second, you can pull this shirt over your head and take a drink of Bud Light through it! Pick yours up at bars during this week's rematch game. pic.twitter.com/9EEYmEyX9T
— Bud Light (@budlight) October 8, 2018
“I wondered why they wanted to send me a couple cases,” Oshie said. “I thought they were just being nice. But, yeah, pretty cool.”
Oshie is still part of a group chat with some of his old friends and teammates from North Dakota, and he said he first heard of the promotion when someone mentioned it in there. “Pretty clever idea. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it,” he said. “It’s retired for a while, I think. Hopefully I can bring it out again next June.”

Come on Alta, let me enjoy my pissing on Bezos' WaPo. He's a commie bastard, soon to be arrested for complicity in those Chinese super-microchips that are in much of our military hardware. I knew 25 years ago that we were being sold out by the Neocons and the left. You people have no idea how close we the USA came to living in hell, and that lousy fuck Bezos was ready to burn us. You will all be shocked at what has really been going on in our country and how close we came to losing it.
Sorry, this kind of belongs in the other thread.

8 Freaking O'clock? WTF NHL? after 6 days off then another back to back. WTF NHL?
Do we get not one iota of props for winning the damn cup? Geez this schedule sucks. WTF NHL?
Please tell me it's not an NBC game?
Anyway.. GO CAPS.
Man the clock is slow.
I don't feel tardy.

Why do we need the Demonrats to show up at this game? Are they bringing their brain dead mob to try and sway the game?
 :poop:

Kempny has been a very good trade deadline Dman. Especially when you consider the previous three.. Shitpants, Weber and Whatsisface
-
Great hustle by Vrana!
-
While I am really interested in seeing Jaskin play ... I think its a bigger game for Vrana (to a certain amount) but mostly for Burakovsky. Bura better pull his head out of his ass, and keep it out of there, or I would hope we ship him out for a better LW or defender.

I love you too! :hearts:
Typical commie attack! Saul Alinsky would be proud!

I'm on 848 now, I got Doc Emeric calling the game. I'd rather not listen to him but I can't handle watching the game with the radio 30 seconds behind the tv broadcast, which it shouldn't be. My stereo will let me delay the sound by a few hundred milliseconds to match a tv broadcast but won't go 30 seconds
-
NBCWashinton is were Joe B and Lacher should be, but it's all Skins bs tonight

A rare loss of positional awareness by Holts.
-
I must've missed something. Did we get three replays each of the Caps two goals?
-
OFFS ....Dammit ... I forgot I paused the game while I went downstairs to pick up my diner .... well, at least it was our goal,
-
FFS, why did Kempny mug him? :clown:

Caps got lucky there, left the backside wide open

Dont forget about the weak effort by Djoos. That was a bad play. Not sure what happened to Holtby on that play.

These Caps are fucking awesome to watch.

He forgot where the goal post was in relation to his body and totally missed the post he wanted to push off from to get to the other side of the goal.

Lol is that what happened. I missed that.

After listening to the announcers .... I remember when the Caps had a really good, if not one of the best, 4th lines .....
-
I sure hope the guys quit sending these blind passes into the middle of ice during the 3rd period .. it would be nice if they did .... Orlov, Oshie, Bura ....
-
After listening to the announcers .... I remember when the Caps had a really good, if not one of the best, 4th lines .....
Our 4th line has looked totally useless in this game.
-
That was a sloppy period for us.
-
Our 4th line has looked totally useless in this game.
I hate to say this, but I doubt they care. You’d think that a defending Cup team returning 11 forwards with 10 available, can do more than minimal adjustments and a line that provides next to nothing except eating a couple minutes off the clock.
The inability and unwillingness to adjust so there are at least just four effective lines can turn into a big problem.
-
why does the bullets banner say Washington on it when they were the Baltimore Bullets when they won? If they're gonna change the city they may as put wizards on the banner too
-
why does the bullets banner say Washington on it when they were the Baltimore Bullets when they won?
hmmm thought they had Bmore on the banners, did they change it?
-
Thaaaaaaaaaaaat's going to leave a mark.
-
Our 4th line has looked totally useless in this game.
Well of course. The 4th line is the only real part of the team that has changed. Players are changing on the line and after all, the Caps haven't played in almost a week. It isn't exactly surprising that the 4th line doesn't have its act together.
-
hmmm thought they had Bmore on the banners, did they change it?
just showed it on the t v hanging next to the Cup banner, it says Washington Bullets
-
How exactly did Djoos sell that trip??? By keeping his feet moving?? Penishead is a dumbfuk

and that’s an excuse? Or acceptable?
We better hope to hell they keep giving us power plays tonight.
-
Wow! Both our PP and PK have been really good so far. 8)
-
dafuk
-
If I was Holtby, I'd beat the hell out of half the team when everyone got back to the locker room. Orlov and Djoos are taking half of their shifts off. Burkovsky has been just the nice side of useless. Stupid drop-passes right to Knight players .....
-
I guess calling a hook against the Caps is better than calling holding a stick against vegas

time for an old fashioned sock party
-
We had a great first period, but it's gone downhill somewhat since then. (Ō_ƆŎ)
-
either the Caps are trying to adjust on the fly and failing miserably, or the bench totally screwed up.
How was Vrana, Eller, and DSP out there at the same time for that GAG?
I can understand double-shifting DSP, but juggling lines that much, particularly in the game is very unlike us.

wow, Ovie scored from the right! Don’t see that very often

I told last time that Ovi gonna score more goals this season! ;)

Some of you complaining about the Caps. Yes, they have some work to do in areas, but the speed and chemistry of this team and the awesome 100% effort by all the guys is spectacular IMO. A far cry from the days we complained about lack of heart. Theyve been playing on overdrive the entire 50 minutes so far.
ETA
I forgot to mention that they are not afraid to crash the net AT ALL. This team is transformed and AWESOME!!

Fleury almost shit the bed there

You are completely correct.
However, it’s a lot to count for all season and playoffs

They got it right. It was an obvious offside. Risky challenge though. If we lose that challenge the goal counts and we get a penalty.

that was close.

Totally true about the heart of this team. Ovie racing back on D on the 3rd game of the season ... that would have never happened just 3 years ago. And yeah while Orlov screwed the pooch, he ran back and made a last-ditch stick check on the puck shutting down a break-away. Gritty and only kind-of pretty win.
-
Kuznetsov was fantastic again tonight. He is so good with the puck. So smooth.
-
18 goals by the Caps in the first three games. A franchise record. WooHoo!
 8)
-
They think Ovie is only 230 lbs. ...... snicker, snicker
-
They think Ovie is only 230 lbs. ...... snicker, snicker
last time I played on a team everyone was a good 10-15 pounds heavier than what was listed
-
Kuzy was the 3*** for me tonight. I thought he was great.Fantastic to see Ovi with the hunger and fire still.Oshie's had a good start to the season so far.
I thought Vegas stepped it up a couple of notches in the 2nd period, whereas we took a couple of steps back. A bit of laziness crept in.
But overall, I really like the way this team looks.

They should have 6 points too

Thanks babes. It's been a pretty :O= week or so, for me. So getting back to hockey and you guys is a positive.
-
It was a really good performance tonight by our team, especially by Kuzy and Ovi!
So,I hope it’s gonna be a really great season for our guys too!
-
Thought they looked pretty good! Seems like they spend a lot of time in their own end whenever Djoos is on the ice? Vrana just needs a break to go his way and it could get interesting for him.. So far he looks way better then Burt, imo.. Kuzy, Nick, Ovi look to be in mid season form, having fun! Carlson too.. I mean, they look good to me! Only thing Im weary of is all the goals they've scored. That's "usually" followed up by a scoring slump, but we'll see..
Is it just me or was NBC not quite as annoying as usual? Was probably just the glaucoma treatment I got my hands on.. :P :raspberry:
-
18 goals by the Caps in the first three games. A franchise record. WooHoo!
 8)
Yep . . . This is a major concern as the hot offense, energy, pace, cannot last the entire year. Additionally. Reidon has three games as head coach with an adapted system based on Trotz, so they currently have the benefit of being familiar with the teams they are playing while the other teams haven't had much data to go on. We should be concerned that once teams will adapt and slow down the offense, that they will continue to exploit the defensive weakness.
While this is true in some extent for every team, and we did adapt to more defensive style in last years playoffs in is not total doom and gloom, but with this team, system, and history, there should be a large concern about needing 6 goals to get points in standings more than praising they've scored that many.
-
Reading through the game day thread I want to correct one thing. When the Bullets won the championship they were the Washington Bullets not the Baltimore Bullets. The Bullets began playing in Washington when the Capital Centre opened in 1974. I believe they won the title in 1978. I remember going to the parade and if memory serves me right the parade was down Pennsylvania Avenue. However, the turnout was nothing like the one for the Caps.
As for the game last night, I thought it was a solid effort. Kuzy was unbelievable and I thought Holtby had a good game, he came up with some big saves. We had some defensive breakdowns that need to be fixed but all and all it was a good game. Tonight should be interesting against the Devils.
-
You are completely correct.
However, it’s a lot to count for all season and playoffs
Well, what is it, man? When I post about the issues with the 4th line and it isn't surprising that that line is one that needs to be sorted out, you jump on me for it, and say "is that an excuse?" Then you give the team credit for early hustle and effort, but say "well, it's a long season and tough to maintain." So hopefully you understand that the beginning of the season is not the time to make blanket judgments about the team.
Yes, the 4th line comment IS an excuse -- or a possible explanation, if you will. Geez, chill out, it's the friggin' 10th of October! If certain things take time to sort themselves out, so be it.
I have my own personal "NHL story lines" to follow this season. And although it's way too early to make any judgments, one potential one jumps out above others to me as one to follow. In the first week of the season, scoring overall in the league is WAY up. There has been a tremendous influx of talented offensive players entering the league in the past few years who are beginning to mature, AND there were rule changes to shrink goalie pads during the summer. I don't know how much these factors contribute to the early scoring binge or if it is just a temporary phenomenon that will die down, but I'll be interested in following what transpires.

Yep . .
I don't see this as a problem, as long as they get their passing under control. Did they not have passing issues early last year too?

Game 1 was a shutout, we didn't need the 7 goals. Games 2 and 3 were arguably against the two best opponents in the league with explosive offenses. I'm just saying maybe some of us are being a little tough on the Caps. I'll take 5 of 6 possible points in three games all season long.
In these first three games this is the best and most exciting Capitals Team I've seen in the Ovechkin era and IMO in the history of the franchise. Needs work on defense, but that always takes a while to lock down and I believe we will, especially since we have basically the same team as last year who ended brilliant on defense. On offense the chemistry and execution is better than I've ever seen. We are DOMINATING on the boards too. Last night Vegas was mugging our guys on the boards and we were still coming away with the puck.
New coach. Very early in the season. No Tom Wilson. Unless we somehow suddenly implode I am happy as a pig in shit at what I'm seeing.
I predict if this keeps up that Bura will finally loosen up and add another dimension to the team, as if we even needed more.
I think maybe we've gotten so used to having so much to complain about that it would feel right to not moan a bit. I'm having no trouble making the shift.

I've read it reference a few times they were still playing in Baltimore when they won, and I distinctly remember dad dragging me to a game which was in Bmore and I know for a fact it wasn't in '74 because we still lived in Chicago at that time

Bullets moved to metropolitan Washington in 73-74.
They were definitely the Washington Bullets when they won the NBA championship in 1978.
I remember watching them come off the plane (on TV)- Wes Unseld was the MVP as the Washington Bullets.
I grew up here and remember the fat lady singing (although I have never really been an NBA fan)
