The Capitals' record-breaking season opener, by the numbers

First-year Capitals Coach Todd Reirden had at least seven reasons to smile on Wednesday. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
So much for a Stanley Cup hangover, huh? The Capitals began their title defense Wednesday at Capital One Arena with a 7-0 shellacking of the Bruins, a team that was receiving more love from experts before the season than the defending champs. As the Capitals hit the road for Pittsburgh, where they’ll look to spoil the Penguins' home opener and improve to 2-0 on Thursday, here’s a look back at some of the record-setting numbers from a memorable banner-raising night in D.C.
7
Goals scored by the Capitals, tied for the third-most in a season opener by a defending Stanley Cup champion. Washington’s 7-0 win is the largest shutout victory in a season opener by a team coming off a title. According to NHL Stats, only two other teams in league history scored at least seven goals in a season-opening shutout. Wednesday marked the seventh time the Capitals shut out an opponent while scoring at least seven goals and the first time they accomplished the feat at home since March 28, 2001. It was the Bruins' 14th shutout loss while allowing seven goals or more.
The Capitals' 7-0 win is tied for the 2nd-largest shutout in a season opener in NHL history.
The largest was in 1975 by the Canadiens against the Kings (9-0).

5-7-1
Record in home openers by the defending Stanley Cup champions since the lockout. (The 2007-08 Ducks and 2010-11 Blackhawks opened their seasons as Stanley Cup champions on the road.)
1:47
Time needed by the Capitals to take a 2-0 lead on goals by T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov, the fastest two goals by a defending Stanley Cup champion in a season opener in league history.
1
Point and shutout for Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, who assisted on Kuznetsov’s second goal in the second period and stopped all 25 shots he faced. Holtby didn’t have a point or a shutout during last year’s regular season. He’s on pace for 82 of each this season.
1.000
Capitals Coach Todd Reirden’s career winning percentage after he became Washington’s first coach to win his first game since Bruce Boudreau in 2007.
0
Mentions of former Capitals Coach Barry Trotz during the pregame banner-raising ceremony. Trotz, who coached last season as a lame duck, resigned two weeks after leading the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup title. His new team, the New York Islanders, will visit Capital One Arena on Jan. 18. Expect Trotz to receive a warm welcome, at least from fans, then.
13
Consecutive wins by the Capitals over the Bruins dating back to Oct. 11, 2014, Washington’s longest winning streak against a single opponent in franchise history. The streak now includes four shutouts.
The @Capitals extended their personal win streak vs. BOS to 13 contests, dating to Oct. 11, 2014.
This 13-game stretch vs. one opponent is the longest in franchise history and is the NHL's longest active run vs. one opponent. #NHLStats pic.twitter.com/gfKmWF59pt

10
Goals in 14 career season-opening games for Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who is to opening night what Bryce Harper is to Opening Day. Ovechkin scored on the power play from his office in the second period and is now tied with Maple Leafs forward Patrick Marleau for the most goals in a season opener among active players. Ovechkin has done it in seven fewer games than Marleau.
That pass. That shot. This team. #ALLCAPS #CapsBannerNight pic.twitter.com/dajEwNCvGA
— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) October 4, 2018
802
Career points for Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom, who registered three assists to become the 10th Swedish-born player in NHL history to eclipse the 800-point mark.
6
Career suspensions for Bruins winger Brad Marchand, who fought Lars Eller late in the third period because — get this — he took issue with Eller celebrating Washington’s seventh goal a little too close to the Boston bench.
“His celebration was unnecessary,” Marchand said after the game. “He took an angle in front of the bench and celebrated in a 7-0 game, so I just let him know.”
Had Marchand instigated the fight in the final five minutes of the game, he would’ve received an automatic suspension. Instead, it’ll be up to the league to decide whether he deserves any further discipline.

Prolly should get it out of our zone here at some point, no?

FFS clear the zone.

Brutal start to this game. Lucky Bowey saved a goal and the Holtby made a big save.

But honestly, we are playing sloppy and slow .. our boys better remember how they played last night and start channeling it into tonight's effort. Check that ... sloppy, slow and stupid ....

come on guys, you can't bump a penguin from behind. The fall over far to easily

Bad bounce on that goal.

Yep, totally a Penguin dive.

my god this game is retarded
-
Holy Fuck .... have they drugged the goalies tonight???
-
Nisky either caught him on an off stride or he dove to the ice.. Either way, we paid for it.. :-\ Doesn't look near as structured as last night..
And... Ovie gives us the lead again.. lol
-
They are going to drive me to drinking again early this year.

Three shots and three goals!!!
and 10 goals in 4 periods

my god this game is retarded
I agree. I hate games like this. Reminds me of the 80s.

?? Center Ice freeview, if you have cable or satellite that gets that package..

I hate only having the Hens feed.
I hear ya.
-
I am loving what I am seeing from the Caps. It's awesome to watch and a way of playing that seems to be putting the Hens on their heels. It overwhelmed the Bruins. We may be seeing a new way of playing only made possible by having so many players with mad skills.
-
?? Center Ice freeview, if you have cable or satellite that gets that package..
I have Center ice but the game us blacked out here because Sportsnet is covering the game.

I'm not liking this game in the defensive zone.
-
I'm not liking this game in the defensive zone.
Hens have had a couple lucky bounces in our zone.
-
Remember, it's only game 2. I like the swarming offense. They'll work out the details I'm sure.
-
That's twice where Nicky has "heeled" a shot that should have been a goal. He's close .....
-
That was a stupid last 3 seconds played by the Caps. Sheesh!!
-
how the hell did they leave him that open???
-
Some of those near misses prolly come back and haunt us.. Should have 5 or 6 goals.
-
how the hell did they leave him that open???
It looked like they quit playing thinking the period was over.
-
?? Center Ice freeview, if you have cable or satellite that gets that package..
I have center ice. They only have the Hens feed up. I looked for the caps feed and it’s not an option. Listening to the hens announcers whine is ok for now.

oh ffs

Pathetic start to this period.

In 3 or 4 years this contract might be a bargain.

Looked like a pretty weak call

One of the larger forwards on the ice ... literally fell over an out-stretched stick (which yes, was horizontal which is wrong) like a clubbed seal ... go figure it was Malkin

Great pp Pitt has

:70:

Sure as hell didn't overpay Holtby ....

But with how talented Pitt is ... we can't keep asking Holtby to save us like that. This squad better start playing Team-D like it did last night.

Conno waited too long

Ya I think he wanted to pass but the Pens covered the passing lane. The should have just shot it a bit earlier.

That was AWFUL D all around. FFS

Our defence hasn't been very good in this game. Especially Niskanen and Orlov

chanting the goalies name has. become so overplayed it’s patheticc.

nice D Connolly. 🤬

nice D Connolly. 🤬
Yup fn pathetic. He just let his man go. Bad thing about this game is that Holtby has made a lot of great saves in this game. How often can you say a goaltender is playing well when he has given up 5 goals in 2 periods.
-

This is the type of hockey I despise. Fucking pond hockey. There are hanging Holtby iut to dry. Niskanen has been especially shitty in this game. I dont understand how people figure he is a shutdown guy because he isn't. Sorry guys but Carlson might be our best defence man at both ends of the ice.
-
Caps ran out of gas that period. I hate back to back games unless both teams are playing back to back. Caps have to be exhausted both physically and mentally after all the activities the last few days. Next week they can get back to a regular schedule. I am not going to worry too much about the results in this game.

Agreed - after the emotion of last night and back- back the third could get ugly. Sucks that the NHL did this to the Caps, plus denied us the joy of making Pittsburgh watch us raise the banner like we had to last year.
-
Gotta clear that 18.

Connolly showing why he’s a 3rd liner and why Bowey’s a 7th defender.

Kind of feeling like DC answering my own posts.

Anyone else wanna join in?

Hate to burst your bubble but Niskanen and Orlov have been far worse than Bowey in this game. Niskanen has been awful.

If you are playing the 2nd game of a back to back why would you get involved in such a wide open game. Not very smart.

OCHIE!!!!!!

Wow what a bad game.

why is that washed out
-
OCHIE!!!!
Again!!!!!!
-
Wow.
-
Sullivan can suck a high hard one after what the zebras have given them over the years

Cant believe they reversed the washout.
-
Caps are due a PP
-
Even the hens announcers think that should have been a delay of game penalty.
-
Cant believe they reversed the washout.
The one ref waved it off but then they huddled up and decided it was good. I think the reason they went that route was because if it was called a goal then it was reviewable. I'm sure if that was waved off the play wouldnt be reviewable. We got lucky.
-
Even the hens announcers think that should have been a delay of game penalty.
After seeing the replay that was just a deflection.

Look at the bright side. 2 games 3 points. I’ll take that all season.

Look at the bright side. 2 games 3 points. I’ll take that all season.
It's game 2 out of training camp. I thought it was a blast to watch. The Caps firepower is something to watch. Add an improved defense and this could be another great season.
-
Pittsburgh is to be congratulated for playing a perfectly clean game after a couple of early penalties, while the Caps committed the last 5 penalties of the game.
-
The other notable thing I though of is how many D-men are scoring.
-
Story of this game was penalties, Caps gave up 2 power play goals and didn’t score any. At even strength we outscored them 6 to 5. Again I think the reason we took so many penalties was the fatigue factor.
On the positive side it is really nice to see Oshie getting off to a great start. We are going to need Oshie to score more than 18 goals this season. I thought the top two lines looked good but bottom two lines were pretty much invisible. I was disappointed especially in the third line, they had a great game last night against Boston. They had 7 high quality chances last night, tonight they had 1.

It was a terrible game. So what if you can score goals. If you give up 7 goals you aren't going to win very many games.
Thought I would point out that Carlson was by far our best dman tonight in both ends if the ice. Pretty bad when Carlson is your shutdown guy.
Oshie was pretty easily our best forward. Pretty much everyone else sucked.

Penalties isn't the entire story of this game. We gave up 5 even strength goals. That's way too many. Bad thing is that Holtby made a ton of great saves in this game and he still let 7 get by him. It could have and should have been worse. We didnt deserve a point in this game. And the Pens were almost as bad as us. One of the worst games I have seen in a long time.

OK, we scored 6 goals against the Hens and lost in OT in game 2 of a back to back. We SUCKED!?!? I don't know why I don't just click ignore on your posts.

Good to see you are in playoff form already, Maaco. LOL. I look at it that we were playing the second of two in two nights, after an emotional banner raising, in Pittsburgh, in their opener, without one of our top 6 O and top 2 D, getting out-power played 5-2, and we scored 2 late to get a point. What the fuck was Shittsburgh's excuse for us putting up 6 on them? If we suck, they suck. It was fun to watch. Game 2. Who gives a shit?
-
I would also agreee this was a terrible game
And I still fucking hate Cindy
For a big strong guy he sure does crumple easily when an opponent’s stick taps anywhere near him
Fucking penalty in OT when it’s 3 on 3 is a joke. You should have to draw blood to get a penalty during 3 on 3 play.
-
You think we played well? If you think that then your expectations are low.
No. If it was April, I'd be worried. In October, not so much.
-
Peace out peeps. 5 days off....who the hell made up this schedule?
-
Take that lucky point and run.. :raspberry:

I guess it was a funny game to watch. Definitely not the style if game I like. I just hope that we dont intend on playing wide open like this all year.
-

I agree, moreover it was a second game in 24 hours for us and first for shitsburg on home ice, thus I think it was a good game in offense, bad in defense because of the lack of concentration and not much time to relax between 2 matches.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 The Hens are never “clean”, they just don’t get called.
You outta be thanking them they didn’t just target and run us and just did their usual trip-slash&dive pussy shit that normally do!

Valid points, but I would think they would have anticipated that earlier.
Both games, albert more responsible than in the past , they degreased to firehouse/video game/pond hockey shit. No wonder they got tired and sloppy.
-

I agree about the pond hockey comment. That's exactly what it was. On the tailend of a back to back why would you run and gun with the Pens. You would think they would gave tried to slow the game down.
On the plus side Oshie and Carlson have looked very good through 2 games. 4 points for Carlson isn't surprising but the plus 4 rating and the fact that Carlson lead the team in TOI and I dont think was on the ice for any of the 7 goals allowed is impressive. I'm not exactly sure on that. I dont recall him being on the ice for any of the goals against. It seemed Niskanen and Orlov were on for the majority of the goals against.
-
The game was sloppy, yes
But getting a point in an OT loss on the road on the 2nd night of a back to back against a very good team while missing a 1st line guy? I'll take it
-

If someone had asked me before the game started whether I would be happy with a point I would have said hell yes. I really didn’t think the Caps had a chance going into that game having played the night before and going against Pittsburgh in their home opener. While the Caps did have numerous breakdowns I think that was the result of fatigue. They were slow in reacting and they had some bad turnovers. However, I give them a lot of credit for not quitting and coming back to tie the score.

Its nice to get the point but I am more concerned about the way we played than the single point. If we lost 3-2 I wouldnt be as concerned. Hope its just a bad game and not a sign of things to come.

Yea, giving up 7 goals is embarrassing, regardless of opponent or back to back, etc.. And not getting a W after scoring 6x? Again, embarrassing.. And this schedule is idiotic.. 5 days off then another back2back? :poop:
