Capitals will host outdoor viewing party for banner raising, home opener

The Capitals will raise their first Stanley Cup championship banner in franchise history before Wednesday’s season opener. Fans without tickets to the highly anticipated event are invited to partake in the celebration from just outside Capital One Arena.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Friday announced that the Capitals' banner-raising ceremony and ensuing game against the Boston Bruins will be broadcast on the video board located on the G Street side of the arena. Street closures will take effect at 5:30 p.m. to accommodate the outdoor viewing party.

In June, thousands of fans gathered in the streets of Chinatown for similar viewing parties during the Stanley Cup finals. Wednesday’s event ensures that there will be an audience of people rocking the red during “NHL Live,” NBC Sports' pregame show, which will broadcast from outside Capital One Arena starting at 6 p.m. As of Friday morning, the cheapest tickets for Wednesday’s game on the secondary market started around $120.
Wednesday’s pregame festivities will also include a “Rock the Red Carpet” event on F Street, where players will arrive and enter the arena at 4:45 p.m. The banner-raising ceremony will begin at 7 p.m., with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:30. The Capitals are strongly encouraging fans to be like T.J. Oshie and take Metro to the game.
Here’s more information about street closures and parking restrictions, via the team:
Traffic and Parking Enforcement:
In order to facilitate this event, there will be no vehicular traffic in the blocks around the Capital One Arena listed below. The closures will begin on Wednesday, October 3 at 5:30. Information is subject to change based on prevailing conditions.
F Street, NW from 6th Street to 7th Street, NW (2:30PM to 10:30 pm)
G Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street (accessible only to local residents and monthly parking pass holders)
8th Street, NW, between G and H Streets, NW
Traffic Restrictions:
- G Street from 7th Street – 9th Street, NW (5:30pm – 10:30pm)
- 8th Street from G Street to H Street, NW (5:30pm – 10:30pm)
- F Street from 6th Street – 7th Street, NW (5:30pm – 10:30pm)
- 8th Street from G Street to H Street, NW (5:30pm – 10:30pm)
Parking Restrictions:
From noon until 2:00am:
- No parking on G Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street

It's difficult to make a GDT more than a few hours before the game because much information is not available until then.
I put up a tentative lineup and we still don't know the refs for the game or whether Willy will be suspended, though I'm guessing he will.

I would bet that he will be on the ice in his jersey. He can't play, but he fully deserves to be on the ice for the ceremony. I would bet Leonsis has him on the ice even if it meant a fight with the NHL. I always say it is far easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission. Fuck the NHL.

Last season Braden Holtby had zero shutouts in the regular season. None. Nada.
Also, the Caps' power play, including the famed first unit, looked disorganized and impotent during the preseason.
Preseason means nothing, and I suppose that's especially true of a preseason after a team wins a Stanley Cup. What possible motivation could there be?

Because the first player they drafted in their first season was Greg Joly who was my favorite player on the 74 memorial cup champions Regina Pats.
Before the Caps entered the league I was a hockey fan but didnt really have a favorite team.
I actually remember when I first started watching hockey. It was in the playoffs in the 1970/71 season. I was instantly a Ken Dryden fan. That was the year Ken Dryden stood on his head and won the con Smythe. I thought the goalies were absolutely badass. Funny thing is that I liked Dryden but wasnt a Canadians fan.

You know, I disagree with May - well partially. Semin should have been the best player on the Caps. He was a good bit more skilled than Ovie. But 2 things held him back. He never had a center like Nicky. When he spent time up on that first line, he was amazing ... if you didn't ask him to fight. But Laich, even at his best, was a poor match to that kind of high-end talent. Secondly ... there was something wrong inside his head ... call it laziness, unprofessional, unwillingness to play the NHL-style of hockey ... just being a pussy .. who knows. But he only showed glimpses as to why I would say he was the most talented guy on that generation's team.

Because the first player they drafted in their first season was Greg Joly who was my favorite player on the 74 memorial cup champions Regina Pats.
Before the Caps entered the league I was a hockey fan but didnt really have a favorite team.
I actually remember when I first started watching hockey. It was in the playoffs in the 1970/71 season. I was instantly a Ken Dryden fan. That was the year Ken Dryden stood on his head and won the con Smythe. I thought the goalies were absolutely badass. Funny thing is that I liked Dryden but wasnt a Canadians fan.

DC might be too in love with his goons but right now this team doesnt have much toughness without Wilson. Orpik is now our tough guy. Who would be next in line. I hate to say it but we might have to call up LOB for that reason.

I wasnt a big Bondrafan either. I didnt dislike him either. My favorites in the past were Gartner, Gustafson, Ridley, Stevens, Tinordi,Kolzig, Maruk Iafrate and Johansson. There are a few others as well.
Present team I like Backstrom and Holtby. And I also like Stephenson. Didnt care for Ovie earlier but he is growing on me. Same with Kuzy. And everyone here that thinks Im a Carlson fan I'll be honest. I didnt mind him when he first got here. I thought he was going to be pretty good. I actually started disliking him for the same reasons people here dislike him. Because of the brainfarts. I thought he started making strides in his game offensively a couple years ago. I only started defending because of all the flack he was getting here. And he had his best regular cession and a great playoff. And actually I'm starting to like him.
I actually bought a signed Carlson jersey last year. Funny thing was the guy was selling a signed Kolzig and a signed Carlson jersey. I wanted the Kolzig jersey but he didnt want to sell them separately. He pretty much gave away the Carlson jersey.

Even before Wilson got suspended this was issue. “Goon” or not, it is a glaring weakness to be exploited by other teams that can have detrimental eff ct’s.
LOB and even Walker will fight anyone (even if they don’t fair well), but that won’t be enough to keep teams from targeting, running, and jumping us.

While I'm not saying it doesn't happen, last night was not something Boston initiated. They didn't take a run at us or jump us when it was 4-0, 5-0, or even 6-0. They did it when Eller skated past their bench celebrating our 7th goal. That was not only stupid, its not how Caps play and sadly Eller forgot that and paid for it. He should be thankful it wasn't Millar much less Chara sending the message. And while you put his size aside, remember that while Marchand is a rat, he's a rat that has stuck up for himself a number of times; ie he is far from being new to fighting like Eller is. But what we need is intelligent players and a balanced team. Guys like Evander Kane are perfect examples - maybe not as much a tough-guy as Tom but while still scoring goals knowing when to drop the gloves.
