I just don't get the video review on Carlsons goal. It had to hit the Flyers skate and it certainly wasn't conclusive that it didn't hit the skate. That had to be a Toronto call and I'm convinced the league wants close games.

I’m convinced the league has it out for the Caps ever since Crosby ran into Steckel and the hockey world blamed the Caps on Crosby’s concussion that Crosby received the very next game when Hedman plastered Crosbys head up against the glass.

It's been numerous times they overturn w/o conclusive video. Whether it be a skate or stick hiding a puck, or what happened tonight.. And that's just Caps games. Not sure how often it happens around the league. Just seems like bullshit and is certainly counter productive to the game to just "guess" at shit. Especially when you're over ruling your on ice referees. I thought the rule was "indisputable/conclusive evidence" or the on ice call stands? Least that's how any normal sport works. lol

I get a kick out of Carbery.
He was totally dismissive of the Caps' win last night. Said they had some good moments in periods 1 and 2, but that's all he could say, and described period 3 as a train wreck - maybe the worst period the team played all season. He does not mince words or pull punches, and the organization, players and management alike, apparently respects and likes him telling it like it is. Whatever else you can say about the state of the franchise right now, he has his hands firmly in control of the rudder. It will be interesting to see if he turns out to have a limited shelf life, or if he can be one of those iconic coaches who can last for the long term.
And I'm sorry, but for me the story of this season in the NHL is not Ovechkin, as compelling as his chase toward goal 895 is. The story of this season is Protas, who out of nowhere has become arguably the best even-strength offensive force in the NHL. I was just looking at the first page of the NHL scoring leaderboard (top 50 players) and virtually every one of them has boatloads of PP points - except one. Protas doesn't play on the PP, and has a total of one assist there. It isn't just the points he scores himself. He drives even-strength offense, and on top of that I think I've seen literally dozens of goals that have been scored by others directly because of the screens he sets on opposing goalies. He is undeniably the best screener in the league. He is not only tall, he is so wide that he is like a wall out there, and yet he is deft enough to get out of the way and let the puck get through. At this point he is pulling away in the league +/- rankings, and though +/- can sometimes be a misleading stat, in his case I think it's an accurate reflection of what he is bringing to the team.
One thing I'm glad of: He waited until this season to explode onto the scene. Why? Because it allowed the Caps to draft his brother Ilya last year, under the radar, in the 3rd round. In his age 18 Junior season Ilya has exploded, putting up pinball numbers that his brother never dreamed of. Ilya is just as big and built just like his brother, but has more hockey skill than his brother at the same age. If other teams had the opportunity to assess Ilya based on Aliaksei's progression this year, the Caps would never have gotten to him in the draft.

The goalie interference goal allowed I'm not upset by (other than it was against my team). That is the type of play that should/could be allowed to review...one that directly involves a scoring play. Also...I think they got it right. It was not interference because the puck was loose (not covered) and the guy jamming at the puck pushed Lindy's glove in, but he got the puck first. Close call, but I agree with it.
The Carlson goal being taking off the board is utter bullshit. It was totally inconclusive so it should not have been overturned. Also...the NHL needs to fix this review BS to allow only plays directly involved in scoring should be reviewable. Missed icing calls 95 seconds prior to a goal should not be reviewable. Missed high stick or hand pass should not be reviewable unless it leads directly to a goal. They are just detracting from the game with all this. Let the refs make the call (or miss the call) and get on with the game. I mean there are 100's of close calls every game...icing, offsides, penalties, etc...I dont want them reviewing everything.

Dude is a complete stud!! His confidence with the puck, his reach, skill, skating.. He's the whole package. If he was a little more physical he'd be one of those guys who earns 10m a year. And he still may, next time his contract comes up. He rarely if ever makes a mistake. And if he does, he recovers so fast. Im always at ease when he's on the ice. We're very lucky he signed the extension before blowing up, cause with our cap space issues, we'd of probably lost him.

Although I agree with you BlackIce that Protus is the story of the year for the Caps as a player., and certainly the player of the year with most post impact and most improved compared to previous season, etc....It is only a story of one year. (so far)
Ovi's chase of Gretzky's goal record is epic. It is likely the biggest story in all of hockey. It's an accomplishment (or rather, will be) of epic proportion.
For decades, most everyone thought it could never be done, yet hear we are. It will go down in history forever in the record books.
And you are right about Ilya Protas as well. That friggin guy now has 50 goals and 74 assists in 61 games in the OHL....which is 2.03pts per game, and he's a +58. He had a hat trick and 4 pts 2 games ago to get to 50 goals making him OHL player of the week, then slowed down for a mere 5 assists last game. In 61 games, he has had only 8 games with no points, and has 31 multi-point games,
Listed at 6'-5", 200lbs, I expect he will put on more weight as he gets older (currently 18).
Sure hope he progresses into the NHL as his brother has....we could have a heck of a tandem with those two.
